FileApp Pro downloading app is free today at iTunes Store

2012-09-09 Thread Esther
Hi All,

This is a late catch, but FileApp Pro, which lets you download and manage
documents and files on your iPhone or other iOS device, is free today. It
normally lists for $4.99. I've mostly been using Filer, which supports more
media file types through playback within the app, but FIleApp Pro is the app I
first used for this purpose as an accessible way to read and play downloaded
documents and media files.

Here's the URL link to the App Store:
• FileApp Pro (free today, normally $4.99) by DigiDNA
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fileapp-pro/id359580470?mt=8

And here's the link to the AppleVis description of FileApp:
http://www.applevis.com/ios-app-directory/productivity/fileapp-documents-files-reader

Quick excerpt:
QUICKLY READ FILES

Images (JPG, PNG, GIF, TIFF and others)
PDF
MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
iWork (Pages, Numbers and Keynotes)
OpenDocuments (OpenOffice) (Text, Spreadsheet, Presentation)
Plain Text and RTF (Rich Text Format)
Audio (MP3 VBR, AAC, Audible, Apple Lossless, AIFF, WAV, CAF)
Video (standard iPhone formats : H.264, MPEG-4)
Web Archives
HTML files
ZIP
The Pro version also supports:
• File renaming
• Multi-selection file/folder moving, copying
• Multi-selection file/folder ZIP
• Multi file/folder email sending
• Multi-selection deletion
• Folder creation
• Text file creation
• Text (.txt) file editing
• Voice Memo recording

It's probably not going to remain free for much longer.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: download managers.

2012-09-09 Thread Esther
Hi Sarah and Dónal,

I've used Wget from command line, which a techie, unix/linux sort of response
that doesn't answer the question of having a GUI interface. A quick search of
the web and the macupdate site brought up references to a donationware tool
called "SiteSucker":
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11634/sitesucker

This is also available in the Mac App Store as a free app:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sitesucker/id442168834?mt=12

It seems accessible, though I set my VoiceOver navigation for Mouse pointer to
"follows VoiceOver cursor" (VO-F8 for VO utility, Command-4 for the navigation
tab, then navigate to the pop up menu option for "Mouse pointer" to change the
setting) so I could click on the "Settings" with VO-Shift-Space to bring up the
menu options. On a tip from the MacUpdate site, if you just want the files the
target site, choose: Settings->General->Download Option->Get All Files in Same
Directory for the pop up menu. The default is set to "Get All Files on Same
Server", which pulls down a huge number. There are also "File Types" that let
you specify only downloading certain types of files, and more "Advanced" menu
setttings.

Sarah or somebody else might like to explore this and report back -- I checked
it out on her site. I think Dónal may want to explore the settings to use
before handing this to his friend.

There's also supposed to be an iOS SiteSucker app for $1.99.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi,
Thanks for warning me, I'm definitely not going to try the open office thing.

that app.

Re: chargers for a macbook pro.

2012-09-09 Thread Esther
Hi Dónal,

If the end that connects to the Mac popped off as another result of the way the
charger died, it should still be covered under Apple Care. That said, I don't
think any non-Apple chargers work reliably with the MacBook Pros. I haven't
had any problems with the older Mag safe chargers -- all of them are still
working. In fact, I've only ever replaced two chargers for my Mac computers.
One was the charger on my 12" PowerBook (my first Mac, vintage 2005, pre-dates
the Mag safe charger by several years) after about 4 years of heavy, portable
use, since the cord near the connection to the computer was fraying. (It still
works, as does the 12" PowerBook, but I don't think this charger is very
reliable or safe now due to the frayed cord, even though I can use it in a
pinch. And I'll just add that PDFs read very robustly with VoiceOver under
Preview in Tiger, if you still have a machine that runs this!).

The only genuine replacement was one of the L-style Mag safe chargers for a
2010 MacBook Pro. It just stopped working after about 15 months with no other
symptoms, and was replaced under Apple care. I think you can buy the older Mag
safe chargers -- the ones with the I-style connectors with cords that extend
directly out from the computer connection port, instead of going out at 90
degree angle as with the newer L-style connectors -- on eBay, with 1-year
warranties from some reputable sellers, but these are refurbished devices.

Cheers,

Esther

 Hi all,
Are those Mag. safe chargers the only ones for a Macbook pro? My original
one has died rather spectacularly (it involved a smell of burning, then
the bit that connects to the mac fell off) so I need to replace it.
However the reviews on the applestore aren't great for the new mag. safe
ones so I said I'd check if there were unofficial alternatives.

In system preferences, check out the startup pane and make sure the
clone is in the scroll area of system disk options. If so, select it and
try to restart from there.

that, and wound up at my recovery partition (where you find yourself
after holding command-r at start up.

Is it a total guessing game at reboot with the option key? Is there
someway to know how to select a superduper bootable clone from that
screen? Is the recovery partition always a choice on that selection
screen, and one needs to arrow at least twice to get to the SD bootable
clone?

Questions, Questions, Questions!

Thanks for any help.

2012-09-09 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
hi all,

Was asked this by a friend and I've no answer.

He is on a website where files are ordered in /folder/folder/file(s). What he
wants to do is point the browser at the folder and have it download all
contents. Note FTP is not an option.

I have recommended some command line methods to do this, but he wants a GUI
based solution if one exists. If FTP access were possible it would be a
no-brainer and I'd just say use transmit, but I've tried it on this particular
server and it doesn't work. Any thoughts?

Hi all,
Are those Mag. safe chargers the only ones for a Macbook pro? My original
one has died rather spectacularly (it involved a smell of burning, then the
bit that connects to the mac fell off) so I need to replace it. However the
reviews on the applestore aren't great for the new mag. safe ones so I said
I'd check if there were unofficial alternatives.

I don't believe this is easily accomplished as yet. I think there was supposed
to be something being done on these things by Western University of Australia,
but the last time I looked all of the available solutions were very poorly
implemented.

I believe there's an OpenOffice plug-in which will do this, but you're a brave
man if you try it. The last time I did, I ended up having to do a total system
restore.

Hi Phil

Sorry to sound like a broken old record here, but the usual recommendation
applies. Make, and retain, a current full backup of your system. Use
something like Super Duper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to accomplish this.

That way, you'd know whether the update breaks anything and, if it does, just
restore what went before.

Backing off Apple software updates

2012-09-09 Thread Phil Halton
There is an update to iMovie, but I'm reluctant to install it as I finally
have iMovie figured out and am afraid Apple may break some of the
accessibility in the new version. Is there a way to back off an update and
revert to a previous version once you've installed the update?

On the iPhone I did this by simply deleting the updated version and
resyncing to retrieve the old. How about on the Mac?

Dreadful spelling there Sarah! :) Anyway, TrashMe is another real treasure. We
use it all the time, it's absolutely magic. If anybody is interested in buying
this little app, it's in the App Store.

Re: google chrome, how do I get rid of this dumb thing?

2012-09-09 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello James

Just wanted to say "Good Call" on this one, since you correctly used the upper
case "L" on the string "~/Library/". However, you did miss the closing quote.
;-)

Just joking James. As I said it was a good call. Most people forget that some
systems, (ours, for example), are case sensitive as has always been the case
with Linux/Unix systems I believe. We use case sensitive file systems because
it allows us much more flexibility. It can, at times, cause problems though
under OS X.

Getting back to Cait's problem though, it brings me back to another subject
close to my heart, backups. I honestly believe that if possible, it is always
wise to create a full system backup before a major installation such as Chrome
is performed. We personally have never performed that specific installation,
although we have been tempted too given the number of websites which still do
not support Safari 6.

Something which does not impact on my own personal use, but which does on
Gordon's and, I would assume, every other VoiceOver users as well, is the
verbalisation of icons mapped to links or even just text. So, you'll hear
something like "Link, Icon_1_Home.gif" followed by another occurrence of "Link,
Home". Sometimes there are two links, sometimes not; depends very much on the
website. I have often wondered whether that happens in other browsers using
VoiceOver.

Anyway, I am drifting off topic. Good call regarding the instructions you gave
to Cait. I encourage backups be made using apps such as the recently and
extensively discussed "Carbon Copy Cloner" and "Super Duper!". They would save
a great deal of headache I'm sure.

• You might also want to check the Application Support folder and your
Preferences folder, which you'll find in your Library folder.

• If your own Library folder is hidden, which is the default setting since
Lion, then do the following;

1. In the Finder, press Command+Shift+G. This will bring up the "Go To"
dialogue.
2. Type the following, without the quotes" "~/Library/ There is a slash in this
quoted text., so you might just want to copy the quoted text.
3. You'll find the Application Support and Preferences folders here.
4. Within the Preferences folder, you're looking for a file called something
like: "com.google.chrome.plist" There may be a few of these files. You can
delete them and then empty your trash. This should alleviate your problem.
