Re: when using siri

2012-11-01 Thread Zachary Kline
Siri's volume is adjusted separately from regular voiceover volume. Two
adjusted, use the volume control once you've activated Siri, presumably when it
is actually speaking so you can get a measure of how loud it is.
Hope this helps,
Zack.

Yep I am noticing that as well, it's annoying really as when your out and about

No offense intended, I just remember some list chatter about having trouble
with the accessibility of the TC books. This is why I asked.

You have a very misguided or missinformed impression of what we have to
offer. If you look at the catalogue you will understand that you do not
download the books or buy them from the TC website, you buy them them from
us. You also get an 80 percent discount, and you download them from outr
accessible bookshelf. So, I am sorry, but just ask anybody who uses our
service whether they find them inaccessible. If they do I would like to
know about it.

Hello everybody

I am pleased to be able to repot that I am now at an advanced stage of
producing an accessible and complete catalogue of the Take Control
publications. This catalogue has been tested by an external and
independent VoiceOver user whose judgement we know to be sound. The
document has been passed as totally accessible and very easy to navigate
with any screen-reader, especially VoiceOver. The only thing I elected
not to do, at least in the first version of this catalogue, is to provide
you with links to the books on the TC website. This is just a catalogue
outlining the book title, release date, number of pages, price
pre-discount and price post-discount. I hope that will suffice for the
time being. I have put a great deal of work into this so I really hope
some people do find it helpful.

New Apple Wireless Keyboard

2012-11-01 Thread Chris
I received this today after only ordering it yesterday. I got it
directly from Apple.
It was very easy to set up. Just press the one and only large round
button on the top right hand side to put it in pairing or discovery
mode. Then on my iPhone 4 I went to settings, bluetooth, bluetooth to
turn it on. While in there the keyboard was detected and was marked not
paired. I thus double tapped on the keyboard and it started to connect.
I was then asked to type the pairing code onto my keyboard then press
the return key. The pairing then completed and was successful.
It is extremely responsive and comfortable to type on. The keys are
raised and large enough for me. Basically if you have a standard mac or
PC keyboard, then you should be right at home. Only with this keyboard
your control key is the second key in from the bottom left, along with,
in this order, option and command, which replaces alt and windows
respectively. This is exactly the same on a Macbook/Macbook Pro/Macbook
Air keyboard.
I was able to update my status on Facebook and Twitter directly from the
keyboard, as well as navigate my iPhone 4. I was even able to remove
apps from the app switcher directly from the keyboard. I can also
control media playback if I wish.
Now my advice is if you are going to be away from it for some time,
press and hold the one and only large round button on the top right hand
side for about 4 seconds. This will completely switch off the keyboard.
Now providing bluetooth is still on, the next time you press the above
button, they will be automatically paired. Not sure what would happen if
I turn the keyboard off and then turn bluetooth off.
Hope this is a good review of the amazing Apple Wireless Keyboard. It
was certainly worth the £60.

I'm just curious, do we recieve the book as a PDF document or some other

read the books online? It doesn't seem to be spelled out anywhere that I can

Hello everybody

Alright, I hope this meets with your approval. I have done my very best to
ensure that this document is both accessible and informative. I hope also
that this document will fill the void for those of you who are interested
in the books, but were unable to locate the exact names of the titles.
Although I could not possibly go into extensive detail regarding each and
every book in the catalogue, I have given the reader a good baseline from
which to start, I believe.

Although I have vision and am, therefore, naturally attracted to visually
appealing websites, I have done all I could to try and see this from the
perspective of somebody who is blind. Therefore, I have refrained from
employing any images or icons in the document, and laid all of the books
out in a hopefully easy to read and understand format. Anyway, make up
your own minds. You can find the document linked too from our website at:

You can navigate this document very easily with any screen-reader's web
browsing functionality. VoiceOver should work well with it as far as my
testing has shown. Please do not hesitate to give us feedback if you feel
it appropriate. But before you start, please be mindful that, if this
document falls short of your expectations, I am sorry. I have put several
hours of work into its compilation for the benefit of the group. I don't
mind constructive criticism in the least.

Re: Dictation on iPhone / iPad

2012-11-01 Thread Esther
Hi Paul,

To add to what Josh said, the dictation feature was added for the iPhone 4S,
and appears on devices that were released since then, such as the third
generation iPad and the recent releases of the iPhone 5, fifth generation iPod
Touch, and new iPads (mini and fourth generation). It shows up in the form of a
"Dictate" button just to the left of the space bar for languages that are
supported. (For example, if I switch to a Russian input language keyboard
there's no "Dictate" key present, and the space bar extends over that location,
while it's there for French.) You use the key on the virtual keyboard to start
and stop dictation instead of using a keyboard shortcut, but the kinds of
dictation commands you use are similar. You have to speak punctuation, such as
"open quote" or "quote", followed by the phrase, and then "close quote",
similarly for parentheses, capitalizing letters, periods, and commas. And, of
course, there are several possible variant phrases, such as "full stop
 " instead of "period".

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Coda 2, Taco HTML edit and accessibility

2012-11-01 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Afternoon all,

The subject says it all really. I'm interested in procuring an HTML editor for
mac. I've downloaded the Coda 2 editor, and I've heard good things about Taco.
However, my problem with Taco is that the default "new" file is HTML not XHTML
and I can't find a way to change it.

So has anyone had success with either Coda 2, Taco HTML editor or, indeed,
anything else of a similar kind?

Cheers,

Re: Dictation on iPhone / iPad

2012-11-01 Thread Josh Gregory
Yes, this is correct. Dictation works on the latest versions of the iPod touch,
iPhone and iPad just the same as in Mountain lion.

RE: The inaccessibility of the iOS 6 appstore on iPad again.

2012-11-01 Thread Debbie April Yuille
There is a picker just above the five tabs at the bottom of the screen.
Swipe up to go through the results. This is where iPhone users are lucky as
this picker works. Unfortunately there is no such picker on the iPad.

I don't know if it is just me, but with my iPhone 4 and IOS 6, I have such a

problem, I search for something, and it only shows one result, and I don't
know how to get the rest of the results.

Hi All

I've tried out the search function on the iPad's app store running iOS 6
again and still it is not accessible with Voiceover. I've had a sighted
person look at the screen and the way to navigate through the search results
on the iPad remains the same as in iOS 5, meaning that all results are
displayed on the same page, rather than each App on its own page like with
the iPhone and iPod Touch under iOS 6. The apps appear as images that the
sighted people can see, yet when I drag my finger over them, voiceover gives
no indication that they're there at all. Are there any iPad users out there
experiencing the same issue as me? If so can you tell me of a work around
for this problem.

Thanks
Debbie

Sounds like we're having the same issue. On my iPad 2 running IOS 6, a
search for the word "chess" in the US iPad App Store App returned 952
results. The results are presented as a grid of 4 apps on a page, but only
the first result on the first page seems to be readable by VO. That result
is located near the top left corner of the screen. I tried various swipe and
other navigation gestures in an attempt to hear any of the other results on
the first and subsequent pages, but haven't been able to hear anything other
than that first result.

Unless I'm missing something, I guess it's time to email
accessibil...@apple.com again.

Navigating through iPhone App Store search results [Was: Re: The inaccessibility of the iOS 6 appstore on iPad again.]

2012-11-01 Thread Bryan Jones
[Subject line changed to reflect topic change]
Try the following:
1. After performing your search, do a one-finger swipe right until you pass the
screenshots for the current App.
2. You should land on an item that announces the name of the current App and
it's place in the list of results. For example, if you searched for the word
"chess" you might hear, "Chess Free; One of One Thousand Three Hunderd results."
3. While sitting on this field, you can perform a one-finger swipe up or down
to move through the list of results.

Accessible Version Of Take Control Catalogue

2012-11-01 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello everybody

I am pleased to be able to repot that I am now at an advanced stage of
producing an accessible and complete catalogue of the Take Control
publications. This catalogue has been tested by an external and independent
VoiceOver user whose judgement we know to be sound. The document has been
passed as totally accessible and very easy to navigate with any screen-reader,
especially VoiceOver. The only thing I elected not to do, at least in the first
version of this catalogue, is to provide you with links to the books on the TC
website. This is just a catalogue outlining the book title, release date,
number of pages, price pre-discount and price post-discount. I hope that will
suffice for the time being. I have put a great deal of work into this so I
really hope some people do find it helpful.

Lynne
