Re: safari reading list

2013-01-17 Thread Ian Harrison
If you look in safari settings the ones for reader indicate that reading
offline should be possible.

On the instapaper problem, I have been contacted by TNAUK to tell me they think
the problem is at their end and they are trying to fix.

 hello all,

I am having a problem with this and I think I must have my settings wrong.

I understood the reading list cached articles on my i device for later
reading. I am saving articles downloaded from the newspapers from TNAUK. I
add them to the reading list on my phone and mac just fine, but if I leave
some time before going back to read I keep getting the 404 not found
message relating to TNAUK'S server. This implies to me it is not cached on
my phone or mac, but merely bookmarked.

I really want to use the service like you would instapaper, but keep
 losing saved articles.

Does anyone have a clue what I am doing wrong?

 Many thanks
 Ian

Re: ibooks and pdf files

2013-01-17 Thread Esther
Hi Ian,

You can email yourself a PDF file as an attachment. Once the attachment is
open, double tap the "action" button in the top right corner and, if iBooks is
installed on your device, there should be an "Open in iBooks" button you can
double tap to add the file to your library.

If you are using Dropbox to transfer the file, double tap the "export" button
in the bottom right corner, which is also the last element on the screen if you
want to use a four-finger tap on the bottom half of the screen to navigate
there, then select the "Open In…" button and double tap, and again select
the"Open in iBooks" button option to double tap.

You should also be able to add PDFs that are directly linked in web pages to
iBooks. Again, there should be an "Open in iBooks" button option, and/or an
"Open In…" button that will list any other apps on your device that can open
PDFs directly, and include an "Open in IBooks".

Your iBooks library can include both ePub books and PDFs in its collections,
and the PDFs will be stored under "PDFs".

There is always the traditional iTunes file sharing method of transferring PDF
files that you add to your iTunes library (under "Books") just as you do your
music or audiobook files (e.g. with Command+O, then select your PDF file in the
dialog window, with the option of using all the standard Finder navigation
shortcuts like Command+Shift+H for your home directory, Command+Shift+D for
Desktop, Command+Shift+O for Documents, Command+Shift+G to "Go to Folder" with
a path that you type in -- can even be on an external drive, etc. Then connect
your device and select the sync options to make sure your PDF files are
included in the file transfers for your books.

Remember that VoiceOver can only read PDFs with text content -- not images of
text, although these can also be added to your iBooks library.

You can also use methods similar to those described above to transfer ePub
books to your iBooks library.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Help with Adob Digital Editions

2013-01-17 Thread Marcos Rodrigues
Hi friends:

I have just download this app and have lots of question about its use.

I purchased a book and am trying to read it.
Firstly, I have the chapters of the book inside a table but can not read each
chapter individually. Is there a way to do it?
I can just read the book if I select a page that I want to read, can not choose
a chapter (for example, chapter one) and read it.

When I select a page, VO reads it continuously, I did not find a way of reading
line by line, word by word or letter by letter, for example, if I want to know
how a word is written, I did not find a way of going to this word and checking
its spelling even though my rotor is set to caracteres. Interacting with the
page doesn't work either.

If I want to read just some parts of a page, without reading since the
beginning of it, does not seem possible either, any idea of how to do it?

Regards.

The folks at Adobe have chosen not to enable navigation by paragraph, sentence,

Re: Help with Adob Digital Editions

2013-01-17 Thread Esther
Hello Marcos,

There's only a work-around method at present if you want to read by line, word,
or character in Adobe Digital Editions Preview: if you use VO-Shift-C, you can
copy the read contents of your current page to clip board, and then you can
switch applications with Command-Tab and paste this into a TextEdit window with
Command-V. TextEdit will allow you to read and navigate with VoiceOver by line,
word, or character.

Bryan, I meant to ask whether you can read with the latest version of Kobo
Books on your iPhone. I think this should work for you if you do a clean
reinstall of the app on your device, if it isn't already working. At the time
this question came up on list in December, I was still using an iPhone 4, and
because the person who wanted to use my iPhone 4 after I upgraded to an iPhone
5 also wanted to be able to use the old Google Maps, that device was still
running the last version of iOS 5, and the version of the Kobo Books app wasn't
the latest update (i.e., it matched the navigation control layout that Anne had
on her "Kobo by FNAC" app, which was basically the version 5.7 Kobo used in
early October 2012 - not the one the version 5.9 they came out with on December
17, 2012 for the question raised on the forum and at AppleVis.

I've upgraded to an iPhone 5 with the latest iOS version and was drafting an
answer about Kobo accessibility when Anne's answer about this showed up.

So the answer is that you should be able to use Kobo Books on your iPhone.
There is a problem with accessibility in the current version on the iPad,
though. What's happening is that there is a button control in the top left
corner of the screen that VoiceOver doesn't see. This actually happened before
in one of the earlier versions of the app on the iPhone, but it really only
affected new users who couldn't set up their libraries in list view without
knowing about the control. If you get someone to tap on that button with
VoiceOver toggled off, and then toggle VO on again and do a two finger flick up
to "read all", you'll hear buttons for "settings","help", and "refresh",
followed by "home", "library", and "reading life".

This is a mess, and I haven't tried to further investigate, but I think that if
you can set this up to get to your "Library" screen it might be usable. The
"home", "library", and "reading life" are not buttons, but are apparently
labels that are below buttons, just as on the iPhone Kobo home screen.
However, the buttons are not announced or seen by VoiceOve, and they're small.
Unlike the iPhone home screen, flicking to "library" and double tapping does
apparently take you to the library screen of the Kobo app on your iPad. This
really is messy, and I don't even see a good way to proceed with enough
diagnostics to describe the problem without getting sighted assistance.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

I know you can definitely edit the document with numbers and you can't with

I don't believe so, the only way you could do that is to copy the text and
paste it. And even then it would create it as a Microsoft Word file.

Thanks for your confirmation reply. I guess if you want to change what songs
you sync on your iphone you have to find the checked ones in the same manner
and then uncheck them and select the new ones. I wonder if there is a unselect

Re: Help with Adob Digital Editions

2013-01-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Marcos,

To select a chapter in the Table of contents, just press Space bar on the
chapter name. Right arrow takes you to the next page and, as Esther explained,
as soon as you turn the page, you can press VO-Shift-c and then paste the
contents of that page into a TextEdit document should you need to look at it in
detail.

Cheers,

Anne
