Re: Split keyboard on ipad mini.

2013-01-26 Thread Sarah k Alawami
Oh that type of split key board. Try this.

1. turn the rotor to edit by placing 2 fingers on the screen and turning until
you get to typing . I flick once like those nobs where you turn and let go for
the option. Note that you must be in an edit field for this to happen.

2. flick down to touch and then turn the rotor back to chars or words or what
ever you navigate by.

Take care.

I never got the idea of split typing. I never was good at typing on the
touchscreen anyways, but since my Apple keyboard is on its last leg, and I'll
have to give the braille display back to the school from where it came for the

Thanks for that…personally really getting tired of all this windows stuff on
this list. Thought of leaving the group but I learn so much from it so won't do
that. I still don't understand why people get a mac if they are going to
install windows on it, why not just stick to a PC in that case? You'll never
learn how to use your mac if all you want is to use Windows on it.
Sorry for my rant.

This Is The Final Reminder: [Was "how to install JAWS on a mac using VM fusion and windows 7"]

2013-01-26 Thread Gordon, Lynne & Tracy
Hello everybody

Please refrain from discussing Windows material on this list. Be aware that
this is a Mac group and, as is clearly stated in the list policy document which
every member was sent upon subscription to this group, we do not accept the
discussion of Windows configurations or any other non-Apple material.

Please don't take this in any way personally. But we have to implement list
policy strictly otherwise we would find the group rapidly losing members. We do
not want this group to follow so many others which have fallen into kayos
because they permit anything at all regardless of topical guidelines. So, if
you wouldn't mind, please do not continue this thread. Anybody who responds to
this thread with advice pertaining to Windows is equally at fault here.
Unfortunately we are going to have to come down hard on repeated offenders.
Please don't make that something we have to do here because we really don't
want to do it. But we must stress very strongly the need for this group to be
disciplined for the good of the group as a whole. We know that there are
members who are really tired of this sort of reminder being posted and equally
tired of the Windows stuff being raised. So let's try not to have this happen
again, please! The next person to offend in this way will most likely fi
 nd themselves in moderation.

It's true that the configuration of a virtual environment is a bit of a grey
area. However, we do clarify this in the list policy document. We just don't
know what else we can do to persuade people to comply!

I'm sorry to sound so harsh, but this really is becoming a very tedious
reminder to have to post. Everybody was sent the list policy document, so we
cannot accept "I didn't know", or ignorance as an excuse. If the member
concerned did not bother to read the list policy document when they joined,
that isn't our fault. So please, everybody, no more Windows questions. This
really is not the place. Ask about Fusion, Parallels, things like that, by all
means. But definitely not Jaws, Window-Eyes, NVDA and all the rest of it. It's
off topic and won't be tolerated any longer.

To clarify, just one more time. You can discuss how to set up your virtual
machine. You can discuss how to configure VoiceOver or anything else on the Mac
side. But the configuration of Windows or any other non-Apple applications
within a non-Apple guest operating system is definitely, absolutely most
definitely, off topic.

Again, this is nothing personal, but this is the final reminder we will post to
the group. The next person to re-offend in this way goes into moderation mode.
That option is outlined in the list policy document which, if you didn't read
it when you were sent your welcome pack, you may view at any time by browsing
to

Alright, that's the end of the final reminder. Yet again I am sorry to sound
harsh; but we simply don't have the time, let alone the patience, to keep
posting gentle reminders to this effect over and over again. Clearly the
message is not getting through. So next time, there's no warning, it will just
be actioned.

If you wish to discuss this with us off list, by all means feel free to contact
us at and we will try to explain a little I am
deliberately not quoting Laurel's post below because I don't want there to be
anything personal. This is a general group reminder, and it's the final time it
will be posted. Thank you for your understanding.

Hello Jamie

I only mentioned it in passing because Paul was trying the pages with Safari.
The station is our own project and we're trying to develop a place where people
can broadcast and have fun. They don't have to be radio wizards or anything,
just want to have fun. Nobody will laugh at them if they make errors. Anyway
there we are. We are very much on the lookout for technical demos and reviews

Hello Paul

The page is entirely HTML and, as such, works fine here. Sometimes in Safari
we have found that you need to press enter, rather than VoiceOver+Space to
activate links and that isn't restricted to our site. The "Listen" link
works fine. Try doing a reload of the page once you've clicked it. Actually,
we have found that even the supposedly inaccessible flash player which is a
customised in-page element for Sparkle Radio, works fine with VoiceOver's
controls. We haven't actually tried the volume settings, but if you use that
player all you have to do is hit the "Back" button it the browser and you're
out of it. It's worth pointing out that the site is still undergoing work,
but the basics are in place.

On that subject, if any member has an audio demo or review which they would
like to contribute to our technology show, "Techno Chat", we would love to
hear from them. We want that show to be a regular event and to form a large
part of the upcoming Sparkle Radio podcast. Oh yes, and we are also working
on an iPhone App which will play our station as well, watch this space.
Things are really hectic this end, which is why we are finding it a little
difficult to stay on top of the group's traffic. It is great to see you all
making such good use of the resource, and we think that 2013 is going to be
an exciting year for Mac Access and also for Sparkle Radio.

Again, if you have any audio content which you'd like to contribute, either
visit the website, or use one of the
following email addresses:

supp...@mac-access.net
or:
supp...@sparkle-radio.net

and we'll get back to you. We are also interested in doing Skype chats with
anybody who has interesting information or experiences with anything
technology-related. Obviously in this group we are talking about Apple-based
stuff. But Sparkle Radio's technology show is not limited as such.

We know that there are a lot of people in this group who have interesting
stories to tell us. Maybe, for example, yo'd be willing to talk to us about
your reasons for going Apple, whether it's iOS or Mac OS. We'd love to hear
from anybody, even if they are a beginner, you don't have to be a
techno-wizard. After all, I am not a techno-witch and, for some odd reason,
I agreed to put in an appearance in the first episode of the programme.
Something which, I assure you, I will not burden you all with again unless
my life depends upon it and even then, it'll be a last resort! ;-)

Hi Todd,

Try Checkbook Pro by Splasm Software, currently $19.95 from the Mac App
Store.

Here's their web site URL:
http://www.splasm.com/checkbookpro/

You can also get a free trial download from that page, or from their
dedicated download page:

http://www.splasm.com/checkbookpro/downloads.html

Note that although they offer two software versions, Checkbook and
Checkbook Pro, the Pro version is preferred, because of features like
folder and smart folder organization, and the ability to generate global
summaries. Also, the normal list price is $14.99 for Checkbook and $24.99
for Checkbook Pro, but Checkbook Pro is currently discounted to $19.95.

Here's the link to the product at the Mac App Store:

Re: Sparkle radio via Safari

2013-01-26 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello Paul

The page is entirely HTML and, as such, works fine here. Sometimes in Safari we
have found that you need to press enter, rather than VoiceOver+Space to
activate links and that isn't restricted to our site. The "Listen" link works
fine. Try doing a reload of the page once you've clicked it. Actually, we have

MacBook Air Prices discounted today at Best Buy [was Re: Re-Mapping Macbook Keyboard for Window-Eyes]

2013-01-26 Thread Esther
Hello Mary and Others in the U.S.,

I've seen articles that Best Buy has slashed the prices of select models of
MacBook Airs by $200, only for yesterday and today. I think these are all
models with 4GB of memory, and the price is cheaper than Apple's Refurbished
price (when available):
• Best Buy cuts $200 off MacBook Air for two days only (TUAW):
http://www.tuaw.com/2013/01/25/best-buy-cuts-200-off-macbook-air-for-2-days-only/

This article links the Best Buy pages with information on the models that are
offered. I believe that Janet's MacBook Air configuration (8 GB memory and 512
GB for the drive) can only be custom ordered online, but that the specs are now
available for both 11" and 13" MacBook Air models. (Earlier MacBook Air
generations only offered the larger disk drive sizes for the 13" models.)

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Windows Fusion questions

2013-01-26 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello Jamire

To avoid repeatedly discussing the same topics on list, could I suggest that
you might like to view the list archives which contain extensive discussion
related to VMWare Fusion. Fusion is a popular virtualisation application which
allows you to run virtual machines within Mac OS X and, therefore, multiple
simultaneous operating systems. There are, and probably will be for the medium
term at least, several accessibility issues which can mostly be worked around.
Indeed, if one is prepared not to be able to customise the user interface of a
pre-installed operating system, Parallels Desktop can actually be used by a
blind or visually impaired person. Anyway, as I said, there is repeated
discussion on the list archives so you might like to go there and do a search
for the term "Fusion" which will undoubtedly produce a lot of information for
you.

Oh, and for the record once again and for everybody's reference, it is against
list policy to discuss the configuration of Windows within your virtual
machines. Discuss the virtual machines's configuration itself, but not the
guest operating systems unless, of course, the guest operating system happens
to be another instance of Mac OS X which, of course, changes the entire ball
gam.

Thank you for your tolerance.

Lynne

I hope this helps.

RE: Organising the main menu on IOS 6.

2013-01-26 Thread Matthew C
Another way I found to do this is start on a blank page. Move two apps to it
and merge them. You have to move one a very small amount so it is easier.
Then move one app at a time there until you are done with that folder and
move the folder back to the first used page. Continue doing this until your
happy with the folders you have.

Hi Paul,

One trick I've found helpful when moving Apps into folders en masse is to
place the folder in the dock. This way I can simply swipe from screen to
screen and drag the desired Apps into the folder on the dock, thus
eliminating the need to move Apps between screens. Also, if you're still new
to this process, be patient. It takes a wile to get the hang of moving an
App icon, locating the target folder, and dropping the App onto that folder
successfully. In my experience, the process gets easier with practice.

HTH,
Bryan
