Re: Humanware BrailleNote Apex and iOS Devices

2013-07-12 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello Josh

This makes a lot of sense. It's really a shame that there's no way to pair your
devices with multiple BlueTooth devices and switch between them all
simultaneously. Thanks again.

Hello Desi

OK, Gordon is banging his head on the wall now and doing all kinds of crazy
things. No, we didn't have the Apex in terminal mode, we were trying to pair it
as a native BlueTooth device. But this explains a lot. I'll get him to calm
down in a minute and we'll try that.

Thank you.

Re: Urgent Service Information, Please Read!

2013-07-12 Thread Gordon Smith
Hello George

Yes, these things do happen but they shouldn't happen! I pride myself on our
record of up-time over the last 4 years or so. In fact, since 12 April 2010,
we have only been off line for a total of just over 4 hours. Most of that
down-time was due to network outages. However, this was a silly error which I
should not have made. We'll find a work-around.

Kind regards

Re: Urgent Service Information, Please Read!

2013-07-12 Thread Gordon Smith
Very kind pif you Josh, but I usually double and triple-check my data when
dealing with this kind of thing. You have to be spot on the ball. But
factually, I am now looking towards a third-party solution for our mail
services. Apple has gone far too far down the road of squeezing out those
customers such as myself who wish to host more than just the bog-standard WIKI
on an internal network. There are alternatives, so I'm going to try one and if
it works out right I'll pay the price and make the switch. Fear not all, we
will not be migrating back to Windows, no need for quite that amount of drastic
measures. :)

Kind regards

I think that if you del a reminder in ios though it will also be removed from
the completed list. at least I think that's what i remember. I just wait until
it goes away on refresh in ios. When you check the box in mac it will go away.

Re: Humanware BrailleNote Apex and iOS Devices

2013-07-12 Thread Desi Noller
Hi Lynne,

Did you put the Apex in Terminal Mode. I don't have an Apex, but a good friend
of mine does, and I was helping her with hers recently. I believe you have to
go into the Connectivity settings on the Apex, put it in terminal Mode, then
proceed as you did with the iPhone. Then choose the Apex on the iPhone, and
once you've double tapped it, you only have a short time to complete the
pairing by entering the pairing code on the phone. I want to say it is 0, 0,
0, 0, without the commas and spaces of course. Then you should hear that
wonderful little sound and the two should be paired. It's getting late here
and I'm very tired, so I hope this makes some sense! If not, maybe someone
else on list will join in and fill in anything I missed! Hope it works!

Cheers!

Desi

PS: I just got my new Brailliant 40 today, and I realize I have much to learn
about using it with VoiceOver on my iMac. I'm having some trouble with screen
navigation. Anyway, there's always something new to learn isn't there?

Humanware BrailleNote Apex and iOS Devices

2013-07-12 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello everybody

Does anybody happen to have a BrailleNote Apex and either an iPad or iPhone
which they have managed to get working? I know this is supposed to work, but
for some reason when we go to the
Settings>Accessibility>VoiceOver>Braille>Braille Display, and then put the
BrailleNote into search mode, the two devices don't see one another at all.
It's odd, as the iPad sees Gordon's Brailliant 40 with no problem at all. He's
keen to try the BrailleNote to see how well it works. But so far, no joy.

Also, has anybody managed to get the BrailleNote working with multi-key input
with VoiceOveR on Mac OS?

Warm regards

Lynne

 Hi Everyone,

If you plug a USB device into your iMac, such as the Brailliant Braille

I would have said yes. I do it all the time. My iMac goes to sleep after an
hour, but my iPhone charges up when connected. Although, if you have a USB
keyboard and plug into the ports on the keyboard, you'll get different
results. I think they will even drain the phone when the computer sleeps.

Re: How To Mark A Reminder As Completed

2013-07-12 Thread Phil Halton
on the iPhone, each reminder has two entries. The first is the reminder
which you can double tap and edit, and the second, jjust below it is a check
box with the same name as the reminder itself. To mark a reminder as
completed, double tap the checkbox. If you don't want to keep the completed
reminder in the completed list, you can delete it by flicking down on the
reminder name (the upper entry) and tap delete from that action menu.

Hi!

Just taken a look on eBay, I searched for "Airplay" and was amazed at just how
many different Airplay capable docks, systems and portable units are out there.

I found 264 different items which ranged from small nice sounding portables to
surround-sound systems to digital radios which contained the Airplay
functionality.

I'm looking to purchase a new "Airplay" compatible system and as it stands I'm
favoring the Bose Sound Link Airplay system, I have a Bose Wave II radio in the house so
I guess I have something to go on with regard to what the Soundlink Air will sound like -
if people haven't heard Bose then I would suggest that perhaps they take some time to
hear some Bose equipment for themselves, the smaller Wave systems etc sound incredible but
I'm rambling -.

2 nice things struck me about the Bose Soundlin Air, price is very competitive
and the unit can be run on either AC or optional rechargeable batteries, the
Bose is the first Airplay compatible unit I've heard of which offers portable
battery operation.

I'll keep the list informed of my final purchase of Airplay equipment but
before I do close this message I would like to heap praise on the former
Airplay system I had which was a JBL Onbeat Air. This unit isn't avaialble any
longer it seems, the system had heaps to offer such as an adjustable iPod dock,
easy to setup Airplay function, good sound and small size which meant it could
be fitted just about anywhere, if you're looking for something which is easy to
use and small - and if you can purchase a JBL Onbeat Air - then grab it!

that, my phone won't charge on my laptop. It shows up in iTunes but it says I
have to connected to power to check Software updates and stuff. although it is
connected and not charging.

Re: More about the sleep/wake up issue on this mac

2013-07-12 Thread Josh Gregory
The only thing I can suggest is to change the amount of time the Mac will go to
sleep, you can set this in system preferences and energy saver. You can change
the amount of time it will take for the Mac to go to sleep is what I mean, from
2 to 3 hours.

You can find an archiv

Bible App.

2013-07-12 Thread Jim Noseworthy

Hi Folks:

In my quest for an accessible Bible, someone on this list listed a
program simply titled "Bible". Is the program called "Bible App" found
in the Apple app store for $9.99? If So, how does it work with
Voiceover? Apparently, I can't acquire a trial version of this app.

Thanks all over the place.

Re: More about the sleep/wake up issue on this mac

2013-07-12 Thread Andy Collins
Well Josh - I hope somebody knows how I can fix this. It's irritating that each
time I return to my Mac, after only say 10 minutes, it appears to have gone to
sleep [this is when the screen is still open] and I can't find a key stroke to
wake it up, it's like it's set to a time setting, and I have to wait about 2
minutes after pressing a few keys [usually the vo keys and a couple of others]
before it comes to life again. I know I could close the lid until I need it
again, but some times I am called to focus on something else that I don't
always know how long it will take, but if more than 5 or ten minutes, the Mac
will have gone to sleep -

There's not a setting for this, it's weird that you're having that issue but I
don't know what could be causing it.

New to the Mac, only had my MacBook Air for 3 weeks. I'm interested in the
possibility of using a different web browser, as I want to use

 www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer

to listen to radio/TV programmes I miss, here in the UK. I'm able to find
the programme I want to listen too, but the play button is a graphic, and
VO can't see it. JAWS under Windows was ok with this, as the BBC was made
aware of the problem, and made it accessible, but they don't appear to
have taken Mac users in to consideration. I'll contact them about this,
but in the meantime, don't want to keep missing programmes. Of course, I
could be wrong, and maybe there is a way to have VO see the play button
when in a graphic, and I just don't know how to make it happen, so if
anybody knows if VO can be made to see these graphic buttons, I'd
 appreciate the knowledge -

Re: get iplayer automator (was Accessible Internet Browsers) For theMack and Voiceover withMountain Lion

2013-07-12 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello Judy,
I have pasted the Get iPlayer Automator article below. I hope this helps

Playing TV and Radio programs on an Apple Macintosh

The free App ‘Get iPlayer Automator’ is a great way to download and play TV and
radio programs on an Apple Macintosh. You can download TV programs from the BBC
, ITV and Channel 4 and radio programs from the BBC including those from
regional stations. You can search for desired programs by entering words which
might appear in the program title and you can set preferences to download the
audio described version of the program if it is available. You can request that
downloaded programs are automatically added to your iTunes library from where
you can play them or transfer them to portable devices such as iPhone, iPod,
and iPad. You can automatically add programs which are part of a series to your
download queue as they become available. Finally if you live outside the UK you
can still download British TV and radio programs via a provided proxy.

Get iPlayer Automator requires Mac OS 10.7 or later. You can download it free
from
http://tom-tech.com/iplayer_automator/iPlayer_Automator/Get_iPlayer_Automator.html.
Copy the ‘Get iPlayer Automator.app’ from your download folder to your
application folder and open it. Wait a few seconds and you will be invited to
upgrade to the latest level which at the time of writing is 1.5.3 (536). You
now need to change a few of the default preferences. Open the preference pane
for Get iPlayer Automator and go to the general tab. If you live in the UK you
must set the Proxy option to None. The default is Provided which should work if
you live outside the UK but I have no way to test this. If you want to download
BBC radio programs as well as TV programs ensure that BBC Radio and BBC
Podcasts options are checked in the Items to Cache group. These are not checked
by default. Also ensure that the Download Audio Described and Signed Versions
option is checked. This is checked by default and will download the audio
described version of a program if it is available. If no audio described
version is available it will download the standard version. Now close the
preference pane.

To download a program first enter one or more words which might appear in the
program title into the Search For Shows edit box and press the Enter key. After
a few seconds look in the Search Results table for the desired show(s) and
select them. Now press the Add To Queue button to add the desired show(s) to
the download queue. Then check that the desired show(s) really are in the
download queue and if this queue contains any unwanted shows select them and
press the - button to remove them. Now go to the Toolbar and press the Start
button to start downloading the desired show(s). These will be saved in the
Download Path specified in the preference pane which by default is set to the
Movies/TV Shows folder in your user area. Downloaded TV programs will also
appear in the TV Shows part of your iTunes library from where you can play the
desired shows. Downloaded radio programs will appear in the Music part of your
iTunes library and can be found by going to Artists and looking for BBC Radio.

You can use the TVR feature of Get iPlayer Automator to automatically download
the next available program of a nominated series the next time you start Get
iPlayer Automator. To do this press the TVR button in the Toolbar. This brings
up a panel enabling you to search for a show in a series of shows and then add
that series to the TVR queue. The next time you start Get iPlayer Automator it
will search for the next show for each entry in the TVR queue and if one is
found it will add it to your download queue.

Each time you start Get iPlayer Automator it refreshes its index of possible
shows. If you have not used Get iPlayer Automator for a while this can take
several minutes during which the Search For Shows edit box is dimmed. You then
just need to be patent and wait for the Search For Shows edit box to become
available.

Interesting site for using a BT keyboard.

2013-07-12 Thread Matthew Carello
Hello all. I was doing a search because I wanted to find a tutorial or
something that better showed how to use a bt keyboard than the one I
had. I found the site I will give you at the end of this email. It is
really in depth and done well. It is a few tables that show you various
tasks you can do with a bt keyboard. One of which is close apps. I
really liked this one. The people that set this up did an awesome job.

More about the sleep/wake up issue on this mac

2013-07-12 Thread Andy Collins
Hi all -

Just to add, as I'm still puzzled: If i close the lid on the Mac, and come back
later and open it, the Mac wakens up immediatley. The problem is if I leave the
lid /screen open, and go away, when I return, I can't get a peep out of it for
a minute or two. I need to know which setting to go to to change this to
immediate wake up? -

Re: help getting voice over to read out skype chats while in the chat window

2013-07-12 Thread Mike Arrigo
You can configure skype itself to tell you when you have a chat
message, once you get that message, usually you can just move your
voiceover cursor to the control that voiceover calls a grid and read
the message, not totally automatic but very simple.

Original message:

Good morning, I am new to this list so hi to you all, I was wondering
if there is away to get voice over to read incoming skype chats while
a person is in the skype chat window? I have had voiceover read a
chat window when I am out of skype itself but when I am in skype's
window it just tells me who is skype chatting me. Any help would be
appreciated for this issue of mine. It could be I am just a spoiled
windows jaws user who has scripts installed so jaws is able to do what
I am asking here.

Go to energy setting and you should be able to accomplish this. It will be
under both AC and battery tabs. It's the first option.

Subject: Urgent Service Information, Please Read!

Hi all

This is just one of those occasions when I really wish I could just bury
myself under a rock and disappear. it's an error on my part which was
probably due to a typo when I created the database entry way back in 2010.

Unfortunately, tomorrow it seems that our SSL certificate for the mail
server mail.tft-bbs.co.uk is due to expire. As you may or may not be
aware we are gradually phasing out the tft-bbs domains. 2 Of them have
already expired; tft-bbs.com and tft-bbs.org.uk. It was intended that by
the time the tft-bbs.co.uk certificate elapsed, (which I had on record as
13 July 2014), the mail and other services would have been switched over
to a new domain more in keeping with what we are doing at present. In
fact, I had intended that mac-access.net would replace the tft-bbs.co.uk
domain for all services.

And it is there, in the year column of the database, where I have made the
error. Instead of expiring on 13 July 2014, the certificate actually
expires on 13 July 2013 which, as you obviously are aware, is tomorrow.

Even with this error in place, the switch-over would have been completed
by now if, and it's a big if, Apple had not tinkered around with all of
the server-side applications, making it far more difficult for an
administrator who requires more than what Apple considers the standard
services required by a company operating an Ingtranet. In other words,
Apple has removed many of the useful elements of its server application
and made others much more difficult to customise. The latter group
includes both mail and web applications. Apache is one area where Apple
has tinkered so much with the configuration data that it's becoming almost
impossible to find it to make manual adjustments to services. They seem
to think that all administrator will require no more than the jazzy new
graphical tools they provide one with which to work in a corporate
environment. Thus, I am having problems configuring websites to function
in the new incarnation of Server.

I would have been quite happy to simply renew the certificate and continue
using the existing service. However, we have a problem there too. Since
we no longer possess such a thing as a USB mouse, it is impossible for
Lynne to upgrade the certificate for me. The process of doing that is,
and has always been, inaccessible under Snow Leopard and earlier versions
of Server.

All this leaves me in a really difficult situation. Since I cannot
cross-grade and I cannot upgrade, I'm stuck! Until I can find some way of
having somebody with vision help me to upgrade the certificate on the old
system remotely, or unless we can find a version of Apple Remote Desktop
which is Mountain Lion compatible so that Lynne can access the server
remotely, I'm stuck.

All this means that there may bee some undesirable behaviour regarding
mail and your clients for a while, until I can get this darn thing fixed!
I am prepared to extend the lifetime of the tft-bbs.co.uk certificate by
12 months which, I hope, should make it possible for me to finish the task
of switching over the services we offer to a new server. In the mean
time, please accept my humble apologies for the error. It was a simple
typing error, but it has now resulted in possible kayos for a while. OK,
let me go find that rock under which I can curl up and hide for a while.
You're within your rights to call me a bungler on this occasion, I really
stuffed up big time!

Kind regards

<--- Gordon Smith --->

Hello Judy,

Here's how to use GetIplayerAutomator.

You need to press Return after entering the programme name in the search box.
You then select the one you want from the Results table and click Add to queue.
Then interact with the tool bar and click Start. Stop interacting with the tool
bar and go to last visible item where you can follow the progress of the
download.

Cheers,

Anne

I find that the lightning browser works fine with VoiceOver and often

Urgent Service Information, Please Read!

2013-07-12 Thread Gordon, Lynne & Tracy
Hi all

This is just one of those occasions when I really wish I could just bury myself
under a rock and disappear. it's an error on my part which was probably due to
a typo when I created the database entry way back in 2010.

Unfortunately, tomorrow it seems that our SSL certificate for the mail server
mail.tft-bbs.co.uk is due to expire. As you may or may not be aware we are
gradually phasing out the tft-bbs domains.  2 Of them have already expired;
tft-bbs.com and tft-bbs.org.uk. It was intended that by the time the
tft-bbs.co.uk certificate elapsed, (which I had on record as 13 July 2014), the
mail and other services would have been switched over to a new domain more in
keeping with what we are doing at present. In fact, I had intended that
mac-access.net would replace the tft-bbs.co.uk domain for all services.

And it is there, in the year column of the database, where I have made the
error. Instead of expiring on 13 July 2014, the certificate actually expires
on 13 July 2013 which, as you obviously are aware, is tomorrow.

Even with this error in place, the switch-over would have been completed by now
if, and it's a big if, Apple had not tinkered around with all of the
server-side applications, making it far more difficult for an administrator who
requires more than what Apple considers the standard services required by a
company operating an Ingtranet. In other words, Apple has removed many of the
useful elements of its server application and made others much more difficult
to customise. The latter group includes both mail and web applications.
Apache is one area where Apple has tinkered so much with the configuration data
that it's becoming almost impossible to find it to make manual adjustments to
services. They seem to think that all administrator will require no more than
the jazzy new graphical tools they provide one with which to work in a
corporate environment. Thus, I am having problems configuring websites to
function in the new incarnation of Server.

I would have been quite happy to simply renew the certificate and continue
using the existing service. However, we have a problem there too. Since we no
longer possess such a thing as a USB mouse, it is impossible for Lynne to
upgrade the certificate for me. The process of doing that is, and has always
been, inaccessible under Snow Leopard and earlier versions of Server.

All this leaves me in a really difficult situation. Since I cannot cross-grade
and I cannot upgrade, I'm stuck! Until I can find some way of having somebody
with vision help me to upgrade the certificate on the old system remotely, or
unless we can find a version of Apple Remote Desktop which is Mountain Lion
compatible so that Lynne can access the server remotely, I'm stuck.

All this means that there may bee some undesirable behaviour regarding mail and
your clients for a while, until I can get this darn thing fixed! I am prepared
to extend the lifetime of the tft-bbs.co.uk certificate by 12 months which, I
hope, should make it possible for me to finish the task of switching over the
services we offer to a new server. In the mean time, please accept my humble
apologies for the error. It was a simple typing error, but it has now resulted
in possible kayos for a while. OK, let me go find that rock under which I can
curl up and hide for a while. You're within your rights to call me a bungler
on this occasion, I really stuffed up big time!

Kind regards

Hello,
I find that the lightning browser works fine with VoiceOver and often
allows me to access buttons and the like which Safari cannot find for
whatever reason. I recommend that you give it a go. It is in the App

Hi John,

The default chess program on the Mac can't really be set for more complex
levels. As far as accessibility goes, you can even set it up to work with
"Speakable Items" if you calibrate the microphone on your Mac (though I
haven't done this in some time), but you can't change the level of play.
I'm not aware of anyone on this list who uses strong chess playing programs
on the Mac. Brandt Steenkamp, a South African iPhone user who got a Mac
about 4-5 months ago, is probably the only person I can quickly identify who
is interested in playing at a comparable level of chess on the Mac, as
opposed to just using the iOS versions of chess apps like Shredder, etc.

You might be interested that there's a good, accessible iOS chess clock app:

2013-07-12 Thread John Gallagher

Hi there brilliant thanks.
I did contact the person who did the hiarcs chess program and the
only very strong program on a mac is hiarcs chess explorer with no
access at all.
Mark Uniage did say though they hope to bring an accessible chess
program out and would I be willing to bata test so you cannot ask
more than that.

thanks for the info then.
cheers.
