Re: good alternative to iTunes for ripping CDs

2013-10-13 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Sarah

Neither of these are dedicated rippers though, so I don’t class them as
alternatives. XLD is a dedicated file converter and ripper, designed for audio
and only audio. What I personally am looking for is something which has a more
XLD-like interface, a more XLD-like functionality specification but a more
intuitive interface. This is one of those sorry occasions where I curse myself
for letting my programming skills slide. I got lazy when the GUI came along
and ever since then I have regretted it. If only, if only, I’d continued when
I started to study C and C+ all those years ago, I’d have been a master
programmer by now and I would have been able to achieve my dream, of having a
Mac Access dedicated suite of utilities to fit the bill.

In any event, the search goes on as far as I am concerned. I would also add
that I have been using Virtual CDRW from Burningthumb until recently but, for
reasons which I cannot as yet discuss, it no longer works for me. So I’m on
the hunt for something else which might. I tried Disk-Soft Demon Light, but OS
X won’t even allow me to install the drivers.

Kind regards

 Morning folks,

At present I use XLD to rip my CDs as I avoid iTunes like the plague.
However one thing that irritates me about XLD is that you can't see the
progress and consequently cannot be certain the CD is ripping correctly. So
are there any good alternatives? I'd ideally like something which enables
ripping and storing of the converted tracks according to a naming convention.

 Thoughts welcome,

Re: Three Questions about IBooks

2013-10-13 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

Ester,

I do have a few more advanced questions for you about IBooks, that either
you or someone else might can answer.

Firstly, you mention about multi-media that's embedded. How does one
activate those items?

Secondly, in the book that I'm reading, there are hyper links to different
footnotes or to jump to different sections. Being that the book content
area is one item in itself as far as Voiceover sees, how do I individually
focus those links, so they can be double tapped?

Finally, is there a way that I accessibly can insert and read my own custom
notes that I write in the margins of the book?

Chris.

Hi Chris,

I should have said that the iPad version of iBooks uses the extra space at
the top of the screen to give the title in a page header, not a heading.
Many eBook apps are designed so that if the navigation controls at the top
or bottom of the screen, outside of the active reading area, are not
visible, they can be brought up by tapping (or double tapping, with
VoiceOver on) in the center of the screen.

For most purposes, choosing portrait or landscape mode for your reading
orientation on an iPad doesn't make a difference. But there are some
differences in what gets displayed if you are reading Books with embedded
multimedia that have been authored with iBooks author, and that can only
be read on an iPad. In landscape mode, there may be a strip of thumbnail
icons near the bottom of the screen that allows you to scroll through
sections of your book. I haven't played with this much, though.

Cheers,

Esther

I’m sorry, we are miles behind on mail.

We state this in the list policy document. The configuration of everything on
the Mac side of things in Fusion is on topic. But the Windows configuration is
not. You might like to join our sister groups, Techno-Chat and Windows-Access

Your response is not entirely accurate, see my previous message. The policy
document which everybody is sent when they join is very clear on this point. I
will repeat what I said earlier, just so the message is clear in everybody’s
mind. The discussion of the Mac side of Fusion is on topic. The configuration
of the virtual machine is on topic. But the configuration of the guest
operating system, (usually Windows) is off topic. The exception to this being
when the guest operating system is another instance of OS X.

I hope that clarifies the position.

Re: What's the accessibility take on iOS7?

Hello Caitlyn

Please forgive my shoddy response. Gordon and I ares only just managing to sit
down now and respond to mail. Our work load has been excessive over the last
few weeks.

iOS7 is very visually appealing if you like colourful and pretty icons.
Functionally, even on our old iPhone 4S is is smooth and lovely to use. Gordon
is finding no problems with using it. I am seriously considering upgrading all
of our iPhones to the 5S model; but I’m not sure what we’d do about the SIM
because the SIM cards in all of ours are Micro-SIM and the 5S uses Nano-SIM.

When we updated our 3GS to the 4S, we got an adapter and simply cut the cards
to size. But I wouldn’t think the same will apply again. Any comment anybody?

Once again Caitlyn, many thanks for your informative comment.

Warm regards

Lynne

Re: What's the accessibility take on iOS7?

2013-10-13 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello Sarah

I am seeing that my question provoked a lot of responses which is great. Thank
you for your input. Again though, it is a very colourful and pretty OS from the
visual perspective. That was why I asked the question. Gordon has been using
iOS7 for some time and finds it very easy to use. Some of the early builds were
a bit wobbly, but most of the little niggles seem to have been ironed out.

One thing that struck us both is the much better synchronisation of playlists
between OS X and iOS. When you create a playlist on your Mac or, I presume, on
Windows iTunes too (but that’s off topic), they just synchronise now which is
very very much better. Some playlists have always done this, but not all.
VoiceOver seems good; although Gordon cannot get his HumanWAre BrailleNote to
work with iOS7 at all, either on the iPad or the iPhone. It paired fine, but it
won’t show up in the list of displays. But that is a different topic.

Warm regards

Lynne

2013-10-13 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello Tommy

I need to try this for myself. So, from the main screen in iOS with VoiceOver
active, how do you bring up the app switcher? I can switch apps visually and
it’s really nice actually. But how do you initiate the app switcher with
VoiceOver active? All or most of the gestures change. There is no longer the
slide and twist type action which we use visually.

Warm regards

Lynne

Well you were miss informed about there not being a 64gb version of the 5S I

responsive than the 4S. As far as size and shape it is virtually the same as
the Iphone 5. Much lighter and thinner than my 4S was. I also got one of the
new leather cases from Apple and it is great. Very thin and light. Very nice
 feel in your hand.

As far as ios 7 goes I like it overall. There are a couple of minner issues
such as the screen refreshing from time to time and VoiceOver is refreshed
and so you loose you place in the app your in. Also when you close an app
you don't always end up with the app highlighted on the screen. You end up
with the first then on that page highlighted.

One of the really nice things is the change to the app switcher. Instead of
doing the double click and hold to close apps, you now just swipe down and
you have choices to open or close that app. One of the hardest thing for me
to teach new users was the double tap and hold gesture.

Overall I like it a lot. I think a lot of low vission users don't like the
color scheme of IOS 7. There are a number of things that you can do to make
 things easier to read though.

where app is the name of an app, and double tap anywhere with one finger.
3. If multiple apps are in the switcher, then just double tap anywhere
with one finger until all you see is home. The reason is the close
action is already selected for you.

Now here is another way to close apps in the switcher.
Basically it is the same, however swipe up with three fingers. This
works no matter what action is selected in the rotor.
Finally to close app switcher, either double tap anywhere with one
finger on the home icon, or press the home button.

Hope this helps.

Keyboard setting for fast repeat

2013-10-13 Thread Ian Harrison
Hello again,

When I first got my bluetooth keyboard I could get fast repeat actions by
holding down a key. For example the command option and right key for skipping
through tracks.

Somehow I have lost this ability and I cannot work out which setting to use to
get it back nor where on the slider to set it, assuming it is a slider control.

Please help.

Thanks

Hello Tommy

I need to try this for myself. So, from the main screen in iOS with
VoiceOver active, how do you bring up the app switcher? I can switch apps
visually and it's really nice actually. But how do you initiate the app
switcher with VoiceOver active? All or most of the gestures change. There is
no longer the slide and twist type action which we use visually.

Warm regards

Lynne

Anyway, today was really the first time I've done much with playing music
on my IPad from the built in Music app. I'm totally loving it! The only
thing that I have really as a question is, I have about 4 albums by a
really great southern gospel group called The Bishops. If you've never
heard their stuff, I'd really really really! highly recommend them! Start
with an album called Stories. I think it's their best one yet. Anyway,
So I noticed that when I double tapped on the artists tab, I was presented
with all my artists: Alan Jackson, Avalon, the Bishops, etc. etc. I
double tapped on The Bishops, at which point, I saw that each album is in
its own heading. I absolutely love! that approach, as I can use my rotor
in headings navigation and flick quickly album by album. That is
incredible! The problem however is, I double tapped on the first track
from the first album listed by the Bishops. It started playing, and away
I went! The problem is, that disc finished
. I was hoping that it would just stop, and that would be the end of it.
Unfortunately, what it actually did, unlike on my IPhone, is it finished,
but then it immediately went down to the next album in the list by them,
and kept playing. It's in other words, like it's wanting to play all the
albums and all the tracks from that artists starting from where I double
tap. Being that there were more albums below the one I initially played,
it continued on to those albums. I would have wanted it to just play that
first album, but then instead of continuing on to the second album, I
wanted it to just stop after that album was done. Is that where I need to
be using the albums tab at the bottom instead of the artists tab?

Sorry, I'm just ever ever so slightly confused.

 Chris.

Re: iTunes Match Question

2013-10-13 Thread Ben J Bloomgren
Desi,

Is this happening on your iOS device or on your Mac? Either way, I've never
seen dimmed tracks in iTunes Match. If it's on the mac, then maybe restart
iTunes and let it get its stuff together. If it's happening on iOS, then I
don't really know what to tell you other than to do the same, i.e. to reopen
the music app. If it's on your Apple TV, reboot the Apple TV itself. This may
be too drastic, but I don't really know what to make of your problem.

absolutely love! that approach, as I can use my rotor in headings
navigation and flick quickly album by album. That is incredible! The
problem however is, I double tapped on the first track from the first
album listed by the Bishops. It started playing, and away I went!
The problem is, that disc finished
. I was hoping that it would just stop, and that would be the end of
it. Unfortunately, what it actually did, unlike on my IPhone, is it
finished, but then it immediately went down to the next album in the
list by them, and kept playing. It's in other words, like it's wanting
to play all the albums and all the tracks from that artists starting
from where I double tap. Being that there were more albums below the
one I initially played, it continued on to those albums. I would have
wanted it to just play that first album, but then instead of continuing
on to the second album, I wanted it to just stop after that album was
done. Is that where I need to be using the albums tab at the bottom
instead of the artists tab?

Sorry, I'm just ever ever so slightly confused.

Chris.

How can I read ePub files on my Mac?

Re: What's the accessibility take on iOS7?

2013-10-13 Thread Sarah k Alawami
It's actually a lot easier then the prior poster said to close apps. Open the
app switcher with the double press of the home button, flick to the app and
simply swipe up with 3 fingers. I'd give you a link to my podcast but it is
currently broken, that is, something ate my enclosures. lol!
On Oct 13, 2013, at 4:07 AM, Chris H christopher...@gmail.com wrote:

Lynn and all, double tap on the home button to bring up the app switcher. Now
 this is what I do.
 1. Swipe to the right with one finger until you come to an app.
 2. Swipe up or down with one finger until the close app is selected, where
app is the name of an app, and double tap anywhere with one finger.
 3. If multiple apps are in the switcher, then just double tap anywhere with
one finger until all you see is home. The reason is the close action is
 already selected for you.
Now here is another way to close apps in the switcher.
Basically it is the same, however swipe up with three fingers. This works no
matter what action is selected in the rotor.
Finally to close app switcher, either double tap anywhere with one finger on
the home icon, or press the home button.
 Hope this helps.

responsive than the 4S.

Re: good alternative to iTunes for ripping CDs

2013-10-13 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello Gordon,

Although you want a lovely GUI interface. I would suggest that you look at
abcde. Which stands for a better cd encoder. It's a very light weight set of
scripts run from the terminal. Via Mac Ports. I used to have a couple of the
customised scripts and run them according to the job I wanted to do. i.e.
cd2mp3 or cd2ogg.

only use real CD media as a very last resort. Even with virtual media,

Subject: good alternative to iTunes for ripping CDs

 Morning folks,

At present I use XLD to rip my CDs as I avoid iTunes like the plague.
However one thing that irritates me about XLD is that you can't see the
progress and consequently cannot be certain the CD is ripping correctly.
So are there any good alternatives? I'd ideally like something which
enables ripping and storing of the converted tracks according to a naming
 convention.

Creating Albums on Facebook containing IOS Pictures

2013-10-13 Thread Jim Portillo
Good morning,

Here's a question that I'm not sure has been addressed on here. I have no
idea how to do this.

I want to post some photos on Facebook that are all kind of grouped together
or in a sequence. I know people create albums. When I post the pictures
from the IPhone, they all appear in the single IOS pictures album. If it
can be done via the facebook app, does anyone have experience creating
specific photo albums, and if so, could you walk us through the process?
Thanks very much, as always!

 hi
This is something which I too would value for much the same reasons. XLD
certainly has its merrets, and I too avoid iTunes as far as ripping CDS
goes. This is despite the fact that my CD material is always virtual. I
only use real CD media as a very last resort. Even with virtual media,
however, XLD is painfully slow nowadays and the only indication of a
successful rip is to enable 1logging mode, then you can at least verify
that the job went error-free by examining the output log. For reasons I
cannot discuss here, I'm not currently even able to do this. I can only
hope for a quick fix as things develoeap.

 Kind regards

Subject: good alternative to iTunes for ripping CDs

 Morning folks,

At present I use XLD to rip my CDs as I avoid iTunes like the plague.
However one thing that irritates me about XLD is that you can't see the
progress and consequently cannot be certain the CD is ripping correctly.
So are there any good alternatives? I'd ideally like something which
enables ripping and storing of the converted tracks according to a naming
 convention.

 Thoughts welcome,

Hello,

Sorry, I don't understand. You install it by:

sudo port install abcde

Providing you have macports installed. I guess if you have a build env, you can
build from source.

It comes with a sample abcde.comf and you edit it as you wish. So by making
several copies with different configurations makes it easy to cater for
different situations.

Here's a sample of how the script is written.

# be selected as '--preset standard --another-option' etc.
LAMEOPTS='--preset extreme'

# Output type for MP3.
OUTPUTTYPE=mp3

# The cd ripping program to use. There are a few choices here: cdda2wav,
# dagrab, cddafs (Mac OS X only) and flac.
CDROMREADERSYNTAX=cdparanoia

# Give the location of the ripping program and pass any extra options:
CDPARANOIA=cdparanoia
CDPARANOIAOPTS=--never-skip=40

# Give the location of the CD identification program:
CDDISCID=cd-discid

# Give the base location here for the encoded music files.
OUTPUTDIR=$HOME/music/

# Decide here how you want the tracks labelled for a standard 'single-artist',
# multi-track encode and also for a multi-track, 'various-artist' encode:
OUTPUTFORMAT='${OUTPUT}/${ARTISTFILE}-${ALBUMFILE}/${TRACKNUM}.${TRACKFILE}'
VAOUTPUTFORMAT='${OUTPUT}/Various-${ALBUMFILE}/${TRACKNUM}.${ARTISTFILE}-${TRACKFILE}'

 Hi Gina,

Do you know if this can be installed using Homebrew? Also where does one get
 the customised scripts?

Many thanks for this it's perfect for what I need. Give me command-line any
 day.

 Hello Gordon,

Although you want a lovely GUI interface. I would suggest that you look at
abcde. Which stands for a better cd encoder. It's a very light weight set of
scripts run from the terminal. Via Mac Ports. I used to have a couple of the
customised scripts and run them according to the job I wanted to do. i.e.
 cd2mp3 or cd2ogg.

 Hi Sarah

Neither of these are dedicated rippers though, so I don’t class them as
alternatives. XLD is a dedicated file converter and ripper, designed for
audio and only audio. What I personally am looking for is something which
has a more XLD-like interface, a more XLD-like functionality specification
but a more intuitive interface. This is one of those sorry occasions where
I curse myself for letting my programming skills slide. I got lazy when
the GUI came along and ever since then I have regretted it. If only, if
only, I’d continued when I started to study C and C+ all those years ago,
I’d have been a master programmer by now and I would have been able to
achieve my dream, of having a Mac Access dedicated suite of utilities to
 fit the bill.

In any event, the search goes on as far as I am concerned. I would also
add that I have been using Virtual CDRW from Burningthumb until recently
but, for reasons which I cannot as yet discuss, it no longer works for me.
So I’m on the hunt for something else which might. I tried Disk-Soft Demon
Light, but OS X won’t even allow me to install the drivers.

 Kind regards
