RE: Jumping to the end of a table/list with Voiceover

2013-11-04 Thread David Griffith
There are a variety of methods which work with different web pages.

My own preferences are as follows.
1. Press command shift R to see if the page can be interpreted by Reader.
If so you will just get the important part of the text read out. The BBC web
pages are good for this.
2. Failing that I use quick nav and personally use single letter navigation
which you can set in Voiceover preferences.
This provides functionality similar to that of a windows screen reader.
Then what you do is dependent on the page you are visiting.

Pressing H will jump you to each heading on that page. This is often a quick
way of getting to where you need.

You can experiment with T for tables, G for Graphic b for button etc.
For example on eBay and PayPal sites I jump to where I need to get to
normally by pressing b for button.
On Sainsbury pressing T for table gets me to where I need to go.
If I do not know the site I most often use item chooser.

Supposed I am looking for a story about Walthamstow.
I may come to a page with loads of advert links and stuff I do not want to
review .
I bring up item chooser and start to type Walthamstow.
Before I have typed a few letters everything on the page I do not want to
read has been stripped out of item chooser and only the elements with
Walthamstow are left.
I review this and can generally hear where I need to go. Pressing enter
here will jump you to that part of the web page.

The advantage of this over find is that you can read the term you are
looking for in context within the item chooser so you can more easily
identify where you need to go.

Hi all,

Allow me to explain more what my question is really about.

I am navigating a webpage using VO+right arrow and left arrow. I get to
a long list, or a long table, that does not contain the content of the
webpage. Since I'd like to read the content and don't really care about
the stuff presented in this table (or list), I'd like to jump over it.

Now, how can I do this?

Thanks.

 Hi all,

I'd like to be able to jump to the end of a table or a list of links while

I have looked at the keys that currently exist for navigating in the web,
but haven't found anything relevant. To that end, I thought to ask whether
any tricks exist to achieve such a functionality.

 Thanks.

Hi Shannon,

The VO+home/end (which is FN+home/end) keys are for navigating to the
very first and last element at the current level. That means that to be
able to move to the beginning and end of anything, you would first have
to interact with it.

Customizing reading of punctuation in Voiceover

2013-11-04 Thread Parham Doustdar

Hi all,

Is there a way to customize how Voiceover reads punctuation? For
example, I am at the Most level, but would like Voiceover to read
symbols such as “, ”, – and —. I know one way to do this is to switch to
the All punctuation level, but that would mean symbols such as period,
comma, and many others I don't really care about also get read.

Thanks.

Re: Publishing pages in Wordpress

2013-11-04 Thread Andy Collins
Thanks Sarah - but this isn't the way to go for me. Like I said in my original
post, this is when using the Word Press blog site. They say you can publish
pages that will appear on each new post, and I have written some pages, and
Word Press says they have been published, but I can't find them. I can access
them when I click on view pages from within the dashboard of Word Press, but
they don't show up for public viewing -

Re: Jumping to the end of a table/list with Voiceover

2013-11-04 Thread Parham Doustdar

Hi Andy?

The problem is that when I'm navigating the web, I can't really interact
with a list; its items are flattened and i don't need to interact with
anything to read its contents (this also happens with tables). I have
been able to jump over a table by pressing VO+= so that I'd have to
interact with a table, but I haven't been able to find the same thing
when it comes time to work with lists.

Thanks.

airPlay And Plenty Of Time On My Hands

2013-11-04 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

Its Melbourne Cup Day here folks, means that just about everyone's on Holiday
just for a horse race, in other words its the most boring day of the year so
thought I'd do some testing and amuse myself by seeing just how robust airPlay
can be and if it would fall over as I added devices and streams.

So what do we have going here? Let's see if I can remember everything smile.

iTunes on the Mac is streaming to my older Airport Express which is connected
to the Yamaha RXV520 in the den, been streaming for 7 hours now and still going
strong.

iPhone 5 is streaming to the Denon AVR2113 in the lounge, has been streaming
for an hour and a quarter and still going strong.

Mac Mini is streaming iTunes to my Bose Soundlink Air portable speaker system,
has been streaming for 2 hours and still going strong though battery of the
Soundlink's likely to go flat at any time.

my iPad 4th Generation is streaming to my Second Generation Airport Express
which is in the bedroom, has been streaming for 2 hours and still going strong.

And last but not least, my iPod touch is streaming to my JBL onAir system on
top of the fridge in my kitchen, has been streaming for the last 9 hours and
still going.

Now all this to me seems quite impressive, II'm sure that other Wireless
routers may have a bit of trouble with all this data flowing this way and that,
certainly one of the routers I had not so long ago in the past wouldn't have
stood all this - not to mention me playing about on the Internet and sending
eMail from the iMac into the bargain -, I'm using an Asus RTN56U router and if
anyone wants specific details on that then move the message to techno-chat and
ask me there smile.

problem selecting non sequential files in mavrics

2013-11-04 Thread Michael Marshall
hey listers,
i’m having a bit of a problem. in mountain lion i could interact with a list of
files, turn cursor tracking off and select files by hitting VO command space.
if i had tracks 1 through 10 and i wanted tracks 3, 6, 8, and 10 this command
was perfect. in mavrics i can’t seem to get it working. i interact with the
list, quick nav on or off doesn’t seem to matter and finder in list view. am i
missing something here?
any help on this would be fantastic

thanks

Re: accessible web designing software.

2013-11-04 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
I’m with Travis on this one. I teach Web Design and use this in class to write
HTML, CSS, Javascript (etc) on the fly. The one thing I’d say is that out of
the box it opens in an HTML 4.01 doctype. It’s a simple matter to change it,
but I’d recommend doing so. If you’re going to do HTML you might as well work
off the HTML 5 spec. If you’re looking for good books, then OReilly is the
place to go. You can get them DRM free, and in various formats which work very
well on mac and IOS. Personally I use the Kindle app on IOS mainly but that’s
personal choice. Finally, some of the stuff on w3Schools is worth a look.

As coding websites is off topic for this list feel free to contact me offlist
if I can help. The caveat is that it might take me a while to respond as I’m
up to my ears in student projects at the minute.

Michael,
If you moved using voice over commands, you do not need to turn off cursor

Transmit is a ftp app. You are not going to do this I don’t think. to use
dropbox simply upload the file, then launch dropbox on ios, and navigate to the

export the file in what ever app you choose.

Hi!

I really enjoy using the Hand Writing functionality of IOS 7 though its proving
to be a struggle on the human memory as I have to remember the shapes of the

Now a question, suppose Apple were to introduce a Hand Writing mode into a
future OS for the Mac, could the Magic Trackpad or the built-in trackpad of a
Macbook Pro or Air be used for this sort of thing?

Re: Re postRe: problem selecting non sequential files in mavrics

2013-11-04 Thread Esther
Hello George, Michael, and Others,

In Mavericks, you turn on multiple text selection after interacting with the
list or table with VO-Command-Return (or as Zack says, vo-cmd-enter). You
select individual items with VO-Return.

A good place to check commands is the Appendix A list of Commands and Gestures
in the VoiceOver Getting Started Guide for each OS.
• VoiceOver Getting Started Guide for OS X Mavericks (10.9):
http://help.apple.com/voiceover/info/guide/10.9/English.lproj/

The exact link to Appendix A in the Getting Started Guide for Mavericks is:
http://help.apple.com/voiceover/info/guide/10.9/English.lproj/_1203.html

Navigate to Interaction Commands, which is the second heading level 2, to
read the commands. You can also use item chooser menu to look for multiple
selection. People who, like me, are not yet running Mavericks, can also read
through the VoiceOver Getting Started Guide on the web.

Here's an excerpt from the summary list of actions and the command keys to use
for these pasted in from this Appendix. This also covers the answer to
Michael's question on how to stop multiple selection:

Action: Start multiple selection in a list or table, and select each item

Command: VO-Command-Return
To stop multiple selection, cut or copy the selected items, press Escape, or
stop interacting with the list or table in which the items are located.

Action: Select a menu or list item
Command: VO-Return

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

 Michael,
If you moved using voice over commands, you do not need to turn off
cursor tracking. Turning on multiple selection mode automatically does
 this.
