Using IOS Simulator With Voiceover?

2013-12-16 Thread Parham Doustdar
Hi all,

Does anyone know how I can perform gestures in the IOS simulator? I am
beginning to learn IOS development, but I can’t even open my app in the IOS
simulator as of now :-)

Thanks.

VoiceOver going mute on Mac OS

2013-12-16 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running Mac OS 10.9 on my 2009 iMac.

Sometimes VO refuses to speak after my iMac has been awaken after several hours
asleep. Pressing command+F5 does not help so I have to power-off and then
power-on again to restore VO.
I recall reading in this forum that you can often recover VO by quickly
pressing command+F5 several times but I cannot remember how many times and
whether I have to wait a bit after the requisite number of presses before VO
will start speaking again.
I would appreciate any guidance on how to restart VO on Mac OS if VO goes mute.
Many thanks

Re: VoiceOver going mute on Mac OS

2013-12-16 Thread Rodney Haynie
I have found that usually typing in my password, with no audible feedback and
pressing enter will log me back into my MBA and Voiceover will be back up and
running immediately. But I bet the Command + 4 or 5 key presses may work for
you too. Definitely try typing in your password blindly though, it might save
you some time.

Take care.

Re: VoiceOver going mute on Mac OS

2013-12-16 Thread Phil Halton
Okay, When I started having this problem in july or august of 2012 after buying
my first Mac, I used to mess around with the volume buttons, and try turning VO
off and on a couple of times. Eventually, maybe after a few minutes, VO would
come up talking. I asked about this problem on the list and Ricardo Walker
suggested hitting Command F5 four times in quick succession. I don't know how
he came up with that strategy, but it worked, and has continued to work every
time VO flakes out on me after a good nights sleep.

I don't know about five times, maybe that's a typo. Pretty soon there'll be a
whole mythology about the number of times to hit command F5, with different
camps a spousing different numbers…

More On The iDatabase App

2013-12-16 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

I've been playing around with both the iDatabase Apps - iDatabase for the Mac
and iDatabase for IOS - and both are reasonably priced from the appropriate App
stores however to use it would appear that iDatabase for IOS is a little more
accessible, I'm not saying that the Mac version isn't accessible I just have
to get used to the layout and learn what each item does when you click on it
with Voiceover.

In my scenario I have both Apps at my disposal so if one isn't quite as
accessible as the other it doesn't matter so much as data between the 2 apps
can be synced using the Cloud.

The accessibility problem with the Mac App as far as I've found seems to be
when you come to Define a new database or modify the structure of an existing
one, all the elements are available for adding/inserting fields and you can see
what sort of field you can use - that is a numeric field, big or small text
field, date field and so on - but how to put them where you want them and how
to tell iDatabase exactly what type of field you want, with iDatabase for IOS
this procedure is a snap so I created some databases on y iPhone using
iDatabase and synced them with the iMac.

Entering records I found dead easy once I had the structure of database I was
after, with the Mac just insert your text into the edit fields or adjust the
date field, with the IOS App, double-tap on the field where you want to enter
data and type or adjust as required.

Overall if you're looking to organise personal data then i think that iDatabase
is very worth while purchasing, its cheaper than the other database package I
have here which is Bento and I think most users will get far more out of
iDatabase than they ever would get out of Bento given the Interface of
iDatabase is slick and far easier to work with.

2 versions of numbers

2013-12-16 Thread Mark Furness
In the applications folder there is a numbers app, which happens to be the
updated version.

In the IWorks folder, in the application folder, there is also a numbers app.
This app is the one listed in the doc. It always tells me to update it.

Can I take the numbers app, that is all by itself and place it over the numbers
app listed in the IWorks folder?
OR
should i delete the numbers app from the doc?

Subject: 2 versions of numbers

In the applications folder there is a numbers app, which happens to be the
updated version.

In the IWorks folder, in the application folder, there is also a numbers
app.

This app is the one listed in the doc. It always tells me to update it.

Can I take the numbers app, that is all by itself and place it over the
numbers app listed in the IWorks folder?

OR
should i delete the numbers app from the doc?

Mark

Hello Dane,

Many thanks for your investigations. I’m very busy at the moment, so hope to
play once everything has stopped for Christmas. From what I saw iDatabase is a
very slim flat database i.e. not a relational database. Which probably mean
I’ll need to use a open source back end and write php interface. If I want to
use relational features.

Thanks.

Re: More On The iDatabase App

2013-12-16 Thread Esther
Hello Gena,

You're correct that iDatabase is a flat database. If you need a relational
database, I know that a number of people are using Tap Forms, which has both
Mac and iOS apps that are accessible. I'm not sure about the status under
Mavericks, but the developer has recently submitted a major update to the Mac
App Store. This may not be of use to you, since you already have iDatabase.
There are recent MacWorld reviews of both iDatabase and Tap Forms, if anyone
wants to read up more about these apps.

Cheers,

Esther

No problem, I had needed to play with iDatabase in any case as I bought it
quite some time ago though I never knew the existence of the Mac version of the
App until you pointed it out.

As you point out, iDatabase is not a relational database manager but its still
very good for managing personal data requirements, I'm going to be using it to
manage my expenses amongst other things.

Databases and related software have always been a passion of mine ever since I
started using computers full time and started programming with DBase and
entering information at the . prompt.

As the

MacUpdate Holiday Bundle Sale ($39.99 for 10 apps)

2013-12-16 Thread Esther
Hi All,

I'm posting details about a MacUpdate Bundle that is on sale for the next day
and a bit. This might be of particular interest to users who want to read
Windows formatted hard drives from their Macs.

Some of the interesting apps in the bundle are Cocktail, a very good
maintenance app for the Mac that lets you clean, repair and optimize your Mac
(lists for $19), ExpanDrive, a GUI-based FTP/SFTP application for transferring
files (lists for $39.95), and Paragon 2-in-1, a pair of utilities that lets you
read NTFS-formatted Windows drives on your Mac and HFS+ formatted Mac drives on
your Windows machine (lists for $29.90). (Note that I have no experience using
the Paragon software; I have heard several VoiceOver users mention the utility
for reading NTFS drives from the Mac, and one person has said they have used
the application for reading Mac drives from Windows. Other list members use
the present version of ExpanDrive 3, and may comment. I've used the previous
version of ExpanDrive (now I use the Transmit app for FTP), and it had some
nice features like the ability to automatically reconnect to servers when you
moved to a new location, which was nice with a laptop.

There are some apps that are clearly visually oriented, like iStopMotion. The
Anonymizer and Backup services might be accessible.

You can usually download a trial bundle from the web site to decide on before
purchasing. They also let you designate licenses for individual apps to be
sent to another user (in case you already have one of the apps in the bundle,
or are not interested in its functions.)

The one important point about MacUpdate discount promos and bundles is that you
do need to create a login account, and that requires a one-time negotiation of
a CAPTCHA (although someone did tell me about getting in touch with the site
managers for help with the account creation.). Your login account contains a
history of your purchases with receipts, activation codes, and links to the
software download that you can return to at any time.

Here's a link to the URL for the current MacUpdate Holiday Bundle:
https://deals.macupdate.com/deal/15082/december-holiday-bundle

I'll also paste in an email flyer I received that describes some of these apps:

iTunes randomly opening on my mac

2013-12-16 Thread Laurel and Stockard
HI guys,
I'm running OS 10 Mavericks on my mac, and lately, I've noticed that iTunes
will open just randomly. Like without me pressing any keys, or doing anything
to open it. Sometimes, music will start playing without me even doing anything
to open it, and sometimes not. Has anybody else experienced this, I just find
it odd.

I've used most of the utilities mentioned here and - if I didn't have Cocktail
and the Paragon Software already - then I'd certainly be buying this bundle.

Back to the point, the Paragon utilities NTFS For Mac and HFS For Windows are
perfectly accessible and make a huge difference to your computer setup if
you're one of those people like me who use multiple operating systems and wish
to have access to drives in multiple formats.

 (lists for $19), ExpanDrive, a GUI-based FTP/SFTP application for
transferring files (lists for $39.95), and Paragon 2-in-1, a pair of
utilities that lets you read NTFS-formatted Windows drives on your Mac and
HFS+ formatted Mac drives on your Windows machine (lists for $29.90). (Note
that I have no experience using the Paragon software; I have heard several
VoiceOver users mention the utility for reading NTFS drives from the Mac, and
one person has said they have used the application for reading Mac drives
from Windows. Other list members use the present version of ExpanDrive 3,
and may comment. I've used the previous version of ExpanDrive (now I use the
Transmit app for FTP), and it had some nice features like the ability to
automatically reconnect to servers when you moved to a new location, which
 was nice with a laptop.

There are some apps that are clearly visually oriented, like iStopMotion.
The Anonymizer and Backup services might be accessible.

You can usually download a trial bundle from the web site to decide on before
purchasing. They also let you designate licenses for individual apps to be
sent to another user (in case you already have one of the apps in the bundle,
or are not interested in its functions.)

The one important point about MacUpdate discount promos and bundles is that
you do need to create a login account, and that requires a one-time
negotiation of a CAPTCHA (although someone did tell me about getting in touch
with the site managers for help with the account creation.). Your login
account contains a history of your purchases with receipts, activation codes,
and links to the software download that you can return to at any time.

Here's a link to the URL for the current MacUpdate Holiday Bundle:
 https://deals.macupdate.com/deal/15082/december-holiday-bundle

I'll also paste in an email flyer I received that describes some of these
 apps:

making Facebook accessible on the mac

2013-12-16 Thread Laurel and Stockard
Hi all,
What's the best way to make facebook accessible on the mac using voiceover? I
mean, I can navigate ok, but really, it's not as accessible as I would like it
to be. I know it has been discussed here a long time ago, but just real quick,
anybody have any suggestions as far as anything I can do in the settings or
anything that would make facebook more mac accessible friendly? I in particular
want tips for using messenger on facebook, and making that more accessible. I
tried using it the other day for something, and found it quite a pain to mess
with. Any good mac apps or anything that could help?
Thanks

Re: Time machine backup

2013-12-16 Thread Esther
Hello George,

Reformatting drives is done with the Disk Utility application, but before you
reformat your drive, or erase your partition, you might want to try doing some
troubleshooting.

Here's the link to the Apple Knowledge Base article on Time Machine:
Troubleshooting backup issues:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3275

I think there's probably more information in the Take Control of Backing Up You
Mac eBook guide, if you have this (one of the perquisites of being a list
member is the 80% discount in buying any of the Take Control Guides).

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: making Facebook accessible on the mac

2013-12-16 Thread Caitlyn and Maggie
I used to use something called menu tab for Facebook.

I honestly don’t know how the latest versions are doing, though.

I personally have never used facebook messenger.
I *think* you can use Skype for your Facebook friends and contacts and chat
with people on facebook that way and it’s easier.

Other then that, I use the mobile site if I have to use facebook from my mac.
My preference is to use facebook from my i devices because I think it’s easier
to deal with.

I don’t think this is a vo issue, though, rather an issue with facebook
accessability itself. they are constantly changing the interface over there,
etc.

AmpKit+ iOS app is on sale for $8.99

2013-12-16 Thread Esther
Hi All,
For the guitarists on this list, AmpKit+ is on sale for $8.99, reduced from
$19.99. I don't know whether there's interest in this kind of app here, but I
know some other VoiceOver users who have pronounced this app to be awesome.
There is an AppleVis directory entry for the free version of this app. The
premium version that is on sale comes with a range of additional synths and
features. This is a universal app that is also Audiobus compatible, so may be
of particular interest to users of new iOS devices with the faster processors
that are well-positioned to work with Audiobus-compatible music apps, which
includes GarageBand for iOS, and route outputs of one amp into the inputs of
others. (This works best on the new processors, which can keep up without
stuttering or drag).

App Store link to AmpKit+:
• AmpKit+ (on sale for $8.99, usually lists for $19.99) by Agile Partners:

The App Store link to the free version of AmpKit is:

You can also read the AppleVis entry for the free app:

There is a user manual at the developer's web site:
http://agilepartners.com/apps/ampkit/manual/

Here are links to a couple of recent reviews of the AmpKit+ app. (Use the

Re: making Facebook accessible on the mac

2013-12-16 Thread Sarah k Alawami
If you want to make the FB mobile site easier to use you will need to activate
the developer menu in safari. This is not as bad as it seems. I will email
instructions later if you want as right now I feel like I've been kicked by a
mule. lol!

Basically you will do that and choose your agent to be firefox 11 for windows.
This will make the page radically different and easy to use.

Tc all and be blessed.

Hi Sarah, I'd love email instructions for this. If you feel like sending them
privately, you can, my email is laurel.stock...@gmail.com or you can respond on
list, whatever you'd rather do. I'd find this rather helpful I think. By the
way, I connected facebook to skype and am also finding that tremendously
helpful. :-)

major improvement to US currency reading app!

2013-12-16 Thread Laurie Mehta
Hi all,

I just installed this update to the iNote app and it is much, much improved
from the old version!

It's much quicker than before and it offers one the ability to set it to
display a choice of whether the result will be spoken, presented as a tone, or
offered via vibration.

For anyone who uses US currency, I absolutely recommend it. :-)

- Laurie M.

Here is the news release FYI:

Upgraded Currency Reader App Launched by Bureau of Engraving and Printing
A new version of the EyeNote™ mobile device application (app) that
denominates U.S. currency was released by the Department of the Treasury’s
Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) today, replacing the version originally
launched in April 2011. The newer version is easier and quicker to operate
because it uses a continuous scan function to identify the note, rather than
requiring the user to take a picture.
EyeNote™ can be downloaded for free onto many Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod
products. It recognizes all Federal Reserve notes issued since 1996, including
the new $100 note that began circulating in October, and communicates the
denomination back to the user through an audible response (English or Spanish)
or a vibration pulse mode for privacy. EyeNote™ was developed by BEP as an
interim solution to increase accessibility to Federal Reserve notes among blind
and visually impaired individuals while the U.S. government develops a system
of raised tactile features to incorporate into future redesigned notes.
“The recent enhancements made to the EyeNote™ app make it an even more
effective tool to assist people in denominating U.S. currency,” said Treasurer
of the United States Rosie Rios. “It offers portability and speed, both
requirements when used in a retail environment, and the convenience of not
needing to carry around a separate reader by using one’s personal mobile
device.” The EyeNote™ app has more than 14,000 downloads since the 2011 launch.
Users who downloaded the original version of EyeNote™ will automatically
receive notification on their devices that an updated version of the app is
available to download. Others can download the upgraded version for free
through the Apple App Store℠ via iTunes®.
More information about EyeNote™ is available at www.eyenote.gov

Mavericks - Is it now time to upgrade?

2013-12-16 Thread David Griffith
When Mavericks was first released it was suggested on this list that
voiceover Users should wait to upgrade. The question is that after a number
of fixes is it now time to take the plunge? The aspect of the upgrade
which most worries me is the complaint about Finder instability,- busy
characteristics. I am a fan of column view which seems particularly
vulnerable to this.

Discovering The Power Of The Calendar

2013-12-16 Thread Dane Trethowan
Just goes to show what you find when you play around.

I got an eMail with the dates for the Home Deliveries from my library for next
year, I noticed that each had a link associated with it.

By clicking on the link I was given several options, show day in Calendar, Copy
and Create Event.

The Create event made things incredibly easy, no need to type in events
manually any longer.

I was using my iPhone when I did all this so don't know how useable the whole
process is on the Mac though I assume its much the same.
