Re: iOS 8.0.2, to Upgrade or Not?
If one considers the possibility of being on the line with Apple Accessibility for 3 hours a pro, then go for it. I, personally, spent last Saturday, and this Saturday, dealing with resetting and restoring my iPhone multiple times, due to glitches that Accessibility tech support did not know about. In both cases, VO completely died, but Seri still said it was on; there simply was no speech. It was not due to speech being turned off (three finger double tap). One bug causing this issue has been identified, but another ghas not. If you are willing totake the chance of VO failing, and having to revive it only by a total reset involving the computer, go for it! It certainly is a great learning experience, but keep the Xanax handy. It is not about those who have not experienced the issues that can warn of the dangers and possible consequences. You make a good poing. Misery loves company, and maybe if enough people call the accessibility line, when VO stops talking, Apple will fix the bugs that cause those problems. What concerns me, however, is the arrogants displayed by people who believe they know better than they who've coded the operating system we're discussing. Regardless of accessibility bugs, which aren't insurmountable, I might add, Each new IOS update includes security fixes to plug holes that were found in the last revision and were picked up too late to be included in the cycle. Irrespective of these bugs, a good number of which, have been addressed, to a certain extent, to suggest that people not upgrade so as to maintain useability, in my opinion is arrogant and gauche and utter folly. To suggest you have no issues with security in a previous revision of IOS is again folly. It only takes one misplaced tap to introduce malware to the system or open up a back door to be exploited by someone with little else to do than annoy the rest of us. If you want total security, you won't buy a smart phone. If you want moderate security, you won't connect it to the internet. Re: iphone question.
It depends on what you want to use the 4s to do. For example, I would advise anyone with a 4s NOT to upgrade it to the latest OS that supports it, namely, IOS8. Expect the phone to be sluggish, and even freeze up on occasion. You will not be able to use many new apps, as the 5s and after have 64 bit processors and apps will be written to utilize this more powerful processor. The 4s can be used as a phone and ereader, if you want that capability. Personally, I would not get anything below a 5s, at this point. I have just replacd my 30 month old 4s with an iPhone 6 with 128 GB. The 4s has 64gb and has been filled to capacity multiple times.Definitely do not get a 4s with only 8GB! Before making any assumptions about the cost of a contract, it is besst to find out how much you will have to pay with or without a contract. In recent months, they seem to be remarkably the same, and significantly less than they were a year ago. That would depend on the provider you choose, which depends on the country in which you live. If used as a with cellular data, there is going to be a monthly charge in addition to the cost of the phone, no matter how the phone is purchased. In my case, I pay the same now, under contract, as I paid before the contract, and it is $50 less than I was paying a year ago It is important not to make assumptions, based on the past, without researching what is presently available. I'm thinking if I hook up my iPod Touch to this Mac's iTunes library, they won't recognise each other, and I don't want to sync the iPod to this particular library, as I will lose all the albums on there that are only on the Windows computer's iTunes library. Unlike with purchased apps that can be downloaded over and over, it seems like an album can only be downloaded once to a device, and then has to be synced with an iTunes library before being able to sync it to other devices already synced to that same library. IOS7.1: convert v. convela
Please type in the word convert in search on an IIOS 7.1 device, and have VO read it. I have done this with 3 separate users, on iPad mini, iPhone 4s, and iPhone 4. In all cases, VO says convela. I realize this is very weird, and cannot believe that it is true. Before upgrading to IOS7.1 on my iPhone 4s, I checked this out, and it was saying convert correctly. When I have checked this out, I have always added a space after the word. While reading text, that contains the word convert it is pronounced convela. I did call Apple about this, but the person I spoke with thought I didn't know what I was doing. I would have thought the same, in his position. He tried it, and I heard his device say it correctly . He claimed to be using 7.1. I feel pretty stupid even suggesting this as a possible issue, because I cannot imagine how it could have changed, from a sw perspective, from 7.0.6 to 7.1. Re: The search feature of the iPad App Store is again not very accessible.
I do not like the layout of search results using ios6. It is difficult to quickly find a description of the app, which was very easy prior to ios6. My iPhone 4, which is now being used as an iPod Touch, as it has no phone service, has been acting very strange, lately. I am running ios5.1 on this phone. In the app store, though search is editable, the keyboard does not come up. This is with the edit field open. Has anyone experienced this phenomenon? Well here is some great news which might interest you – you can! A small utility called Virtual CD-RW which sits on your menu bar and runs when you need it. So, if you are writing things to CD and need to test them out regularly, you no longer need to go through the hassle of wasting disks, or even erasing them; you can do it all on a virtual CD-RW. This little utility has already made it possible for Gordon to create audio CD's, then if need be, modify them later. The advantage being that you no longer need to worry about writing multi-session disks and discovering that they aren't universally playable in every CD drive out there. We are currently testing it with VoiceOver, because obviously with it being an application which sits on the menu bar, there is always the potential for inaccessibility and before we recommend this application, we want to be certain that it is one which we can recommend as fully usable by VoiceOver users. However, if nobody is interested then usable or not, we won't bother the group with the details – virtual CD's are not something which every computer user has a practical use for, and this utility is not free – although for what we get out of it it doesn't seem unduly expensive at just $29.00 US. So, could you please let us know if you are interested? Gordon is also hoping to produce an audio podcast demonstrating how this application can be used – but again, only if there is interest. If you use the system shortcut Command+Control+Eject, the machine will usually restart of its own accord unless there are user windows open which require intervention. Re: Other possible cures for Dónal's muted speaker issue - was My temperamental iPhone!
As I have not had this problem for a while, my memory may be incorrect. But, it seems that anything I did, connecting headphones, hitting the sleep/wake/lock button, swiping or tapping. Sometimes the headphones would work, but the phone's volume without the headphone was too low. Back when this first happened, I took it to a store in Austin, Texas, where they didn't know much about VO. It so happens that I had screen curtain on, and they thought the whole phone was broken smile. - Original Message - From: Geoff Waaler geoff.waa...@gmail.com To: Mac OSX iOS Accessibility mac-access@mac-access.net Sent: Wednesday, July 25, 2012 11:01 AM Subject: Other possible cures for Dónal's muted speaker issue - was My temperamental iPhone! Greetings Dónal, Diane and list, Another solution is to perform actions/gestures that should cause VO to emit speech and press volume up while its presumably happening. EG, pressing the power button normally causes VO to announce the time. Without VO though, I have no way of ascertaining whether I just locked my screen or unlocked it. If I use the two finger flick up gesture, and press volume up, usually by the time vo finishes announcing the time, date, notifications, and slide to unlock/take picture admonishments, its at full volume. If not, then I probably locked it, and a repeat of the sequence of pressing power, followed by the two finger flick up and volume up will do the trick. Usually when this happens, the head phone volume is unaffected, so if you're not comfortable acting on faith, you can put on the headphones, locate a volume control, and then remove the headphones before manipulating the volume slider via the flick up gesture. Lastly, there is a very intermittent issue that likely still exists with current IOS devices; I had it happen once a couple years ago on my 3GS. What happens is that a speck of dust gets into the headphone jack which causes the microswitch to remain open, fooling the hardware into believing that the headphone jack is engaged and there bye route sounds accordingly. In this scenario, the solutions suggested by Diane and me are ineffective. Instead, one can probably dislodge the item with a little canned air, or by inserting and extracting headphones into the jack several times quickly. HTH. For settings, you want to set vo to display alerts instead of banners, if it's like how it is in iOS, which I'll know more of soon. hopefully, lol. For instance, when it's set to banners, vo in iOS will say: New notification from app (where app is the name of the app) but it won't let you go to it or anything. When alerts are set up, though, vo will say: Alert! Name of app, then the notification, with a close, and a reply/launch/whatever the notification requires button. Anyway, I know there are a lot of things I still need to learn, but the only major problem I've run into so far is that growl notifications aren't spoken as they were. I'm not sure if there will be a growl update released to fix this, or what the deal is. The notifications I'm mostly interested in getting back are when files are added, deleted or changed in dropbox. Granted, I do most things on my PC, but if I happened to have the mac on as well, it was handy to hear acapella Tracy informing me of dropbox changes. I'm very happy that the Acapella voices are still working. I use Alex for Voiceover stuff, but Tracy is my system voice, and I'm happy that didn't have to change. If anyone could shed some light on the situation with growl, that would be great. On a similar note, I'm wondering if there's any way to configure notification center to use the system voice? Sometimes, if I'm reading something else, notifications aren't read, so if it's possible to configure it to use the system voice, that would be helpful. Also, has anyone tried this little program called Hiss? It supposedly bridges the gap between growl and notification center, but so far, I haven't been impressed with its performance, especially since it doesn't honor growl settings with regard to system voice being used. Is there going to be a growl update soon that will resolve all of these minor issues? Also, I've noticed, especially if notification center is telling me about a dm or mention I received on twitter, that it doesn't read the whole thing. Is that fixible, or would I have to go to notification center to see the whole thing? What notification center settings are ideal for using with VO? I don't have an I Device, so all of this is extremely new to me. There's so much to learn, but on the whole, I'd have to say that I'm about 95 percent happy with Mountain Lion, and the dictation

If I can figure out how to access the Dropbox settings I'll try to play with them. it would be fun to try to fix the problem. the Mini is a greg little computer over all. It is very snappy compared to my 2009 mac book with 4 gigs. this 2011 computer with 8 gigs is deffinately more responsive.I would be perfectly happy to use it without a screen, but if unexpected performance problems can be avoided by getting a screen then that will be my solution. Now I just need to learn a little about modern computer screens as I have not looked into that for well over a decade. Eric Caron On Jul 23, 2012, at 3:59 PM, Esther wrote: Hi Eric, That's very interesting about being able to use Google Drive. I think the relevant property about the kind of outside network resources that you use, and how it might impact your Mac Mini's Finder busy message, is what happens with the file syncing and updating of information. With Dropbox, and also with Google Drive, there are advanced menu options for controlling what you sync and the syncing speeds for upload and download. I've never experimented with these, but this basically establishes the amount of network bandwidth you might be using with your various file operations. I suspect that this is what is contributing to amount of Finder activity that you're seeing without a monitor. In the meantime, you've provided a useful piece of information for other Mini users who want to use a file transfer facility. I'll give you a link to a recent Lifehacker article that compares Google Drive and Dropbox, and describes the differences in syncing speed. There's also an interesting comment about being able to use Google's OCR capabilities on scanned document files. I'm not sure whether all the features that are mentioned are accessible. • File Syncing Faceoff: Dropbox vs. Google Drive by Whitson Gordon, April 24, 2012 http://lifehacker.com/5904731/desktop-file-syncing-faceoff-dropbox-vs-google-drive Hope you are otherwise enjoying your Mini. Re: Mac mini July 2011 screen question
Good info, Gordon. I will talk with my instructor about this, later this afternoon. I haven't played with it, since I saw the posting on the list that this was a problem on the Mac mini. It is easy enough to turn VO on, both for the logon screen, then again when I am logged in. Thanks, that makes lots of sense, but, I would think that servers are not powered down very often, and that sighted people might boot up remotely. Therefore, there would either be a monitor on another machine. How often do you actually shut down a server and reboot it? All bar one works without a monitor and there are no problems at all with VoiceOver starting or reading. In fact, we also have a late 2009 Server machine which works just as well. There would have been no logic behind a design philosophy preventing the machine from being used this way because many enterprise organisations mount their servers in such a way that direct video displays are impractical. Thus, it has to be functional without a display so that remote management is possible. Lynne uses ARD to admin our servers very frequently and doesn't encounter any issues. Re: Mac mini July 2011 screen question
During the one-on-one sessions, there is no monitor. That being said, during my session today, we ran into a problem, in which the instructor was telling me how to get to the disclosure triangle, but I couldn't find it. She took the keyboard, and couldn't find it, so I suggested that she get a laptop from the store and look at the screen. She then discovered that VO was not calling the place she wanted disclosure triangle but it had a different label LOL. In fact, it was the place I thought I should be, but she had thought that place was something else. She says that she has been wanting to work with someone, like myself, so that she would not have a screen in front of her. Glad to be appreciated, for a change LOL. - Original Message - From: Eric Caron eric_ca...@mac-access.net To: Mac OSX iOS Accessibility mac-access@mac-access.net Sent: Friday, July 13, 2012 3:43 PM Subject: Re: Mac mini July 2011 screen question Hi Dian, Thanks for your comments. John, What is involved in the setting you refer to, that costs about $60? I do not have the problem of preferences not sticking, but do have the problem of VO not starting automatically, and a couple of other fairly trivial things. app pricing was: fleksy is out!
I thought it appropriate to change the title of this subject, as the thread is about pricing of apps that are made especially for people who are blind. I have paid $30, two years ago for Digit-eyes, now it has dropped to $20. At the same time, I have purchased a bar code scanner for $1400, then see a new model come out in a year, with only a $800 trad-in. $15 only seems high, because apps for iOS devices are so inexpensive. But, maybe you should look at it in terms of how important it is to you. If you can use touch typing fine, on the iPhone, then you don't need this. If you would like to increase your speed, and do a lot of typing on the iPhone, then its worth is increased. If you buy a game, and all you can do with it is play the game, it is worth less than something that will benefit you in several situations, many times a day. $15 is more for some, than it is for others. But, the phones are not inexpensive, either, especially if you purchase a recent model. Consider what we have had to pay for the ability to do, what most take for granted, and the cost of $15 is trivial. I am taking one-on-one lessons at the Apple store in Denver, and have the good fortune of working with an instructor who, though fully sighted, uses VO all of the time. We usually sit in comfortable chairs out in the mall, where it is quieter than in the Apple store. There are small tables and electrical outlets, and she uses a headphone splitter, and no screen. We seldom run into problems. If so I will want to start bargain shopping soon. next question is, are there folks out there using this model and do you have any good or bad feedback for me? Re: Sound Hound
Thanks. I truly appreciate your explanation of the buttons. I would never use a vague expression such as poorly labeled, I was very specific about these buttons not having ANY text label. The help for this app refers to the big orange button and a black button, I wrote to the dev that those of us who are totally blind cannot distinguish the color of a button to determine its function. I like this app, more than chazm (sp?), because I can read the lyrics, without them scrolling and wrapping on the screen. However, I would like to see the name of the song and artist without having to press another button after doing a search. Thanks again, Diane - Original Message - From: Geoff Waaler geoff.waa...@gmail.com To: Mac OSX iOS Accessibility mac-access@mac-access.net Sent: Tuesday, July 10, 2012 6:13 PM Subject: Re: Sound Hound Hi Diane, On the results screen, I see three unlabeled buttons. one is directly below the word results and a second is in that same row on the left hand side. Lets call them UK1 and UK2 going left to right. Directly below UK2 is a button labeled with the name of the artist. Just from playing around in order to prepare my post, it would appear that the button I named UK1 will play a preview, or if the song is already in your library presents a choice between the standard preview, or your version. The other two above and below the artist will display a review of the album including it's contents. There are unlabeled buttons corresponding to every song title which will play samples. Remember that you can use the two-finger-double-tap-hold gesture to label elements, or relabel ones where you don't like the name -- for example, in the SoundHound search result window, you might want to change control infopage save to save. Bare in mind that we are a very small segment of the population, hence we often have to meet developers half way. Most have never had cause to use VoiceOver, so won't know what is meant by a badly labeled element, unless you can explain where they are and how they vary from the nicely labeled ones. Just my two cents. Best regards.
