Re: [Mac-access]: Bootcamp V. VMWare Fusion

2015-04-27 Thread Eileen Misrahi
I have been reading all of the posts here and tried on different occasions to
respond. For other tech reasons that I don’t think is necessary for this
thread, I’ll put my 2 sense in about BootCamp and what I needed to do to
install it myself. Before I start, I want to suggest to listen to a podcast on
CoolBlindTech regarding Wininstaller. It’s a software program that will provide
one with a talking installer for Windows. I did not go that route, since I am
still not fully confident in advance skills on the Mac side. I used the
following apps to install Win 8.0 with no (sort of) sighted assistance. They
include KNFB Reader, BeMyEyes, the Applevis guidelines, and Facetime. Here is
what I found that helped me.

1. The Applevis guidelines was sort of helpful. The dialog pages when
installing Win 8.0 didn’t pair up with the information written in the
guidelines. Hence, you need to be careful on which keystroke you used and
where. That said, the keystrokes when matched to the correct dialog page were
very helpful.
2. When using the KNFB Reader, I first increased the brightness of the Mac’s
screen to 100%. This gave me very accurate results in the image scan with KNFB.
It also allowed me to locate the precise section in the Applevis guideline text
for the correct keystrokes to use.
3. I used BeMyEyes to confirm the 04 bootcamp drive. Since this is a critical
point in the installation, I didn’t want to reformat the wrong disk. I also
had the individual assist me in the confirmation of the advance button in disk
options and the format button at this point. I did that because I had the
sighted person on the other end.
4. However, I had some difficulties in accessing the next button. It was
located in the lower right hand corner and the only method to access it was
with the trackpad.
5. I contacted an AT sighted buddy of mine through Facetime and with his
guidance in which direction to move my finger on the mouse, I was able to
select the next button and left click on it. It was a challenge, but very
rewarding knowing that I was able to install Win 8.0 on my own. My AT friend
learn something that he may be able to use in the future to assist someone else
that wants to install Windows into BootCamp, but does not have sighted
assistance available.

Sorry for this long reply, but I thought others would like to know my creative
resolution to a task that is really not accessible to the visually impaired to
complete without sighted assistance. HTH.

Warmest regards,
Eileen

I think it is 2 years since I booted into Boot Camp.

Having said that there are some reasons why you may need Boot camp.
 1. Hardware support. It is possible that some hardware will not necessarily
play nicely with Fusion. Mainstream devices should be fine but for example I
could never get my specialist VIP hardware EyePal scanner to work under
Fusion. As I now use this on a Windows machine this does not matter for me
but may be an issue if Fusion is your only Windows option.
 2. Resources. Actually I find a Fusion Virtual Machine pretty fast on a Mac
but theoretically all resources are available to a Boot Camp install so
should be more powerful. However as I say my Fusion installs seem fast enough
and certainly boots up faster than Boot Camp. I would recommend that if you
go the Fusion route you modify at the outset the Ram and processor cores
available to your Fusion VM as the default is pretty skimpy. Actually if you
go the Boot camp route you should also increase the max disk space allocated
as this is also skimpy by default.

It is important to in Fusion that you settle down your processor core and
memory allocation at the beginning as otherwise this will create possible
activation issues for your windows install and certainly Jaws. I routinely
use NVDA until this is all sorted out.

I have worked with others to use it successfully, and they have had to enter

 Thanks for any feedback.

listen to a audio message, raise the phone to your ear. When you want to

Re: [Mac-access]: Get Backup Pro is a solid backup utility for Macs

2014-10-25 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello,

I just reviewed the information on this app. My question is: Will this work
with the OS of Mountain Lion? I haven't upgraded to Yosemite yet, but would
like to purchase it and hopefully use it before installing Yosemite. It would
be nice to have a clone of the computer, plus a good all-around backup program.
Thanks for this gem.

RE: Blind Square points of interest

2014-09-02 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello,

I could be mistaken, but doesn't the accuracy on how close you get to a POI
depend upon the GPS satellitesone has? There's a button right above the home
button in Blind Square that will give you GPS accuracy within Blind Square.
If you double tap this button, the info changes to speed and double tap it
again you can get cardinal direction. The double tapping of this button will
cycle back to the gPS accuracy. The closest I have ever been with Blind
Square and my GPS satellites has been 16 feet. One habit I have gotten into
is when you have reached your destination, toward the bottom of the detail
information of the destination there will be a button to update the GPS
coordinates. This may help in the accuracy when using the specific
destination again. HTH.

I’m somewhat behind on mail. Is it possible, is that what you’re implying
here, to install Windows 7/8 under Boot Camp without assistance? I was under
the impression that this was system-specific so wouldn’t always work reliably.
For instance, selecting the partition to format when there are multiple drives

change the sequence?

Hi,

I am 99% sure that the bootcamp partition is located in the 4th position.
However, once you begin the installation of Windows, you will have no
speech, hence needing sighted assistance. At one point, I did read the
article posted up on Applevis to install
Windows without sight, but my steps and the amount of tabs didn't match up,
as reported by my assistant helping me to install Windows. Also, I'm not
sure which OSX you are using, but I am running Mountain Lion. And began with
Win 8.0 original single licensed disk and bootcamp for one reason or another
didn't like it. I needed to create an ISO on the desktop and run bootcamp
from the ISO disk instead of the disk. I did keep the disk in the external
DVD player and that's where Win 8.0 was installed from. It was the oddest
thing, but it worked. Just giving you my recent experience with it all. HTH
and good luck.

 Hello everybody

As some of you may be aware, we have been planning for some time to migrate
the Mac Access server to a new physical server system and also to a new DNS
host. This involves a very great deal of work on our part and I’d like to
tell you a little bit about why that is the case.

For some time now, we have been experiencing a problem with the server
administration tools we used to use to help us administrate both the member
listing for all of our groups, and also other vital server configurational
data. The net result of these problems is that the member listing is not
visible to us at all, neither is any of the other server data, or the list
data itself. Therefore, the only access we have to the list configuration is
that which every user has to their own specific configuration. Without going
into too much technical detail, Gordon keeps having to manually rebuild the
Open Directory database because there’s a problem somewhere in the system and
it keeps causing corruption. The GUI-based administration tools are useless
so Gordon needs to use the Terminal and command line tools to keep this
airplane flying! Indeed, Apple’s own engineering staff have been unable to
determine the cause of the problem and their ultimate advice was to simply
trash the server instance totally and rebuild it from the ground up with a
new OS install. That is fine in principle, but we are keen to retain as much
information as possible in order to minimise inconvenience to our clients and
group members. Please know that even those of you who are not our direct
clients are important to us. Although our first duty is to those for whom we
host services, we regard all of our members as part of what we do. Anyway I
 am babbling. e h

This means that, in order to obtain the address of each user, along with any
specific configuration settings they may have set, we have to effectivelyΩzsw
log in as though we were that user via the web interface at
 http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/mailman/listinfo/mac-access/options/your-address@your-host.whatever/.
Aside from this, we’re going to have to manually replicate all of the
generic list data on the new server for every single one of the groups
hosted here. This, believe me, is no easy task; as some of the groups used by
our commercial clients use very highly configured virtual hosts. One of our
most valued non-commercial clients has multilingual options configured which
we are also very keen to replicate. We shall be in touch with that client
directly shortly to discuss the way forward for them.

Gordon has spent most of this weekend working behind the scenes in the room
from which we run all of our servers; (I’ve almost forgotten what he looks
like! ;-)); on the new system, and even as I write he estimates that several
more days will elapse before we’re ready to even test the new system locally,
let alone expose it to the Internet. Why am I telling you all this? It’s
really quite simple. We require, and would very much appreciate, your
 assistance.

It would make our lives far easier if you as list members would take a moment
to drop us a line privately, using the support address
supp...@mac-access.net to let us know whether or not you anticipate or
intend to remain a member of this group in the medium to long term, or even
whether you wish us to add you to the new system at all. As well as this, we
would be grateful if you would please let us have details of any specific
settings you have configured on our server. For instance, if you are using
digest mode to receive messages in bulk, whether you have a system password
configured which overrides the default, etc.. Of course, when the new
instance goes live, you will be able to modify your own configuration once
you’ve been subscribed. We are simply trying to save you the work and
 minimise your inconvenience. :)

We have not far short of 500 members in this group alone now, and it would be
a horrendously laborious task for Gordon to use the web interface to inspect
every single user’s individual configuration; especially since the majority
of users have never changed any settings. You may say “why not just use the
defaults then?” That in theory may save time. But we are anxious to have the
transition be as seamless as possible for everybody and, therefore, we’d like
to have this data available in a database which I shall be compiling for
Gordon as and when we receive each member’s response. We plan to maintain
this database in the longer term, so that we do have a permanent record of
who is currently a member of our groups, and any specific configuration they
 may be using.

Sadly, as I’ve already indicated, it simply is not practical to

Re: Powering an external mic: was putting cassettes on to my Mac

2014-06-06 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi,

I tried to post earlier, but I was reading your email in my personal email
account. When reading up on how to connect my turntable to record my LPS into
digital, one article mention either using a preamp or through my receiver. What
I understood was that a computer doesn't have enough power to run the device by
itself. So, I guess that either a preamp or using ones stereo receiver will do
the trick. If I am giving the wrong info, someone please pipe in. The article
was from B and H photo store on their website. HTH.

Best,

Re: Boot Camp

2014-06-03 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello Gordon,

I won't discuss the installation of Windows here, but I just went through the
tedious process about 1-1/2 months ago. The question I have is if you have a
DVD disk of the Win operating system or need to make an ISO image. That will
make the difference on which check boxes need to be checked in BootCamp. Also,
if you need to use an ISO image, that needs to be downloaded to the Mac and
placed on the desktop. The only point in the installation that I received a
blank small window (only seen by sighted people) was at the beginning of the
Windows installation. I only know this because my husband assisted me in this
process. HTH.

Kind regards,
Eileen

This seems to work a little differently to how I remember it in the early
days. When you run the Boot Camp assistant, you’re prompted to create a
Windows Media Device, download the software from Apple to support your Mac
and then install the operating system. That’s fine as far as it goes. But
when I tried this last night it just booted to a dark screen with what
looked like a window in the centre.

I presume that you’re supposed to boot from the USB drive. But do you need
to hold down a key on boot to enable this?

I’m not going to discuss the installation of Windows itself as that is an
 issue not for this group.

believe the serial to USB converter will work. I've never tried the

Hi Jeff,

I thought the UK is 8 hours a head of California. I was curious so I opened
the world clock tab in the clock icon in utilities on my iPHone and it stated 8
hours ahead. So, if I counted ahead 8 hours from 10:00 AM (morning) in
California, it will bring me to 6:00 PM in the UK. I can't argue with the

I am going to take a shot at this. I'll think simple and ask, Are you sure the

i’ve then clicked default to set it back and no sound is coming from the

Re: Skype on the Mac

Hi Isaac,

Since you posted the VO or maybe it's an OS keystoke, is there a listing of
keystroke list for all of them for skyp and where can one find the list of
them? I guess I could open all of the individual menus and make my own list of
them. I was hoping that there was a listing of all of them somewhere instead of
reinventing the wheel.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Re: Skype on the Mac

2014-03-24 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Okay!!! I did understand that the keystroke you posted was for hanging up
calls. It seemed like you were a more experienced user of Skype on the Mac that
you could share a listing of keystrokes (if there was one) to those who are
newbies in using Skyfe on the Mac. I didn't think my last post on this thread
was asking anything out of line. So, I pose this question again, Do you know or
have a listing of the hot key shortcuts that one can use with Skype on the Mac?
If one exists, where can one find it? It would be nice not to reinghent the
wheel if one exists.

Thanks.

Re: OCR Apps

Hi Alberto,

I wish I had purchased Fine Reader Pro instead of Prizmo2. There has been
extensive discussion about this app either here or on another Mac list. I am
beginning to get things confused where I have seen the posts. The app runs
$99.99, but the engine is ABBYY. May be others who are using the app can chime
in. when I get some extra money, I will purchase it, as I want to have a

Re: OCR Apps

2014-03-11 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi Isaac,

May be you can give a concise instructions on how to get the OCR read out after
scanning the image? I am able to scan the image, but not get any results. What
brand scanner are you using and what are the settings you are using in Prizmo 2
on the Mac? When I try to OCR the doc, I check the OcR checkbox, but a table
opens. I make sure that English is selected or highlighted. This will bring me
back to the dialog box. When I try to translate it or OCR it, I always get an
error message that Prizmo couldn't read it and to adjust my settings. If you
can list what you do or tell me what I am not doing, that would be terrific. I
really would like to use this app on my Mac, but I put it on the back burner
and go back either to my iPhone or PC. Any advise would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Eileen

Re: Mac App Deal: MacGourmet Deluxe has dropped in price:

2014-01-13 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi Esther,

When going through all these posts, I am just getting to this one. My question
to you before I seriously think about purchasing Mac Gourmet is if I purchase
it through the Mac Ap store will there be an update from version 3 to version
4? Maybe I wasn't making the connection in the more recent posts about going to
the web site and getting a license from there to update. Can you elaborate on
this if it can be done in order to purchase Mac Gourmet at the 9.99 price? You
know that I have had much difficulties importing my text files into Paprika
and still have not accomplished this with all of your detail explanations. I
needed to put it aside because I was getting somewhat frustrated and spending
too much valuable time that I needed to dedicate to my work. I have mastered
all sorts of things with the Mac Air since I have purchased it, but this is one
that my brain seems not to embrace. Thanks in advance for your opinions about
the above.

Best,
Eileen

 Hi Dónal,

I posted that MacGourmet deal to AppleVis, but I feel ambiguous about the

are placing on sale is version 3, and they have upgraded (if you buy from
their web site directly, at full price) to version 4. (I didn't realize this
at the time I posted -- just saw this now). This seems less than honest to
me. Version 4 is the new version that is finally supposed to support cloud

think your opening comment was necessary or that I deserved it. We all make a
mistake once in a while, so I guess you think you are perfect and don't make
any mistakes. If Gordon wants to place me on monitor status for this post, so
be it. Like you, we have both been trying to get Gordon's Apex to pair with his

out-of-the-box solutions. We are all aware that there is some conflict or
corruption with one of the device's software that is not allowing this to

Hi Esther,

I am just wondering if my email ever reach this thread. I had stated expressed
the same that is in your and Ann's email, but both of you were more thorough
than I. As a user of Prizmo and Text Grabber with my iPhone, with the StandScan
Pro, the accuracy is much better than using my OCR apps dedicated to the blind
on my PC. thanks for your post and the confirmation of how one can use OCR apps
on the phone and have a real portable solution.

I agree with Anne that TextGrabber and Prizmo are the best OCR apps for the

 • TextGrabber + Translator ($1.99, normally $5.99) by ABBYY

Here's a link to the June AccessWorld article that reviews both TextGrabber
 and the StandScan Pro:
 http://www.afb.org/afbpress/pub.asp?DocID=aw140603

If you need to order the StandScan Pro from its web site, there's a product
link for the device with the high-power battery and charger (that you want
for the brighter light that improves OCR results):
 http://bit.ly/1kYNUll
I've shortened the link from the full address at the main site:
 http://standscan.com/
I've used Zoom Reader (just with VoiceOver, not the low vision functions).
It uses the ABBYY engine for OCR, so it does a reasonable job, but
TextGrabber, which is ABBYY's own app, is better. It's possible there are
low vision enhancements to ZoomReader that make it worth the $19.99 list
price, but frankly TextGrabber is better irrespective of price. For one
thing, if you import an image from the camera roll, ZoomReader won't
correctly OCR if the image is upside down or rotated by 90 degrees, although
it will recognize the rotated images if you use the camera directly.

Another tip, if you take a lot of images that you want to transfer back to
your computer, you can export to a downloading app as an intermediary to
Dropbox and get more content transferred than if you simply export to Dropbox
 directly.

Creating a Distribution List in the Native Mail App With Mountain Lion

2013-12-12 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello All,

I am now moving on to bigger things in the native mail app on my Mac Air. I
need to create a distribution list (as it is called in Outlook), but I didn't
see any option in the menus that would give me a hint that I should open the
submenu item. Is this something that is completed in the contact app on the
Air? I am trying to think simple with this, but I am having a hard time in
getting this done. Any suggestions and/or detail instructions would be
appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

ABBYY FineReader-Advice on Purchasing From The Website or App Store

2013-12-10 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello folks,

Is there any advantage of purchasing ABBYY FineReader from the website over
the app store? I'm just curious about this, since one can procure the app
either way. Also, has anyone tried plugging the Pearl camera into the Mac
computer to see if it is recognized? I guess I could experiment with it.
Currently, the only scanner that the Mac Air recognizes is my Brother MFC
all-in-one. I haven't had much luck with it and Prizmo 2.

Thanks.

Update On Installing The Plustek 3600 On The Mac

2013-12-05 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello Folks,

I contacted the US office here in California regarding installing the Plustek
3600 on the Mac OS operating system. What I learned was that the model 3800
replaced the 3600 and that the 3600 wouldn't be supported any further than
10.7, which is a beta. The tech support individual will send an email to the
corporate office in Taipei to see if they would be so kind to create another
beta version for 10.8. I indicated that there are other visually impaired
individuals who are using this scanner and would prefer to install it on their
Mac computers. He indicated that the response time from the corporate office is
about 2-3 days. When I receive an email from tech support, I will post again.
It wasn't the answer I wanted to hear, but at least this guy was willing to
try. I also inquired if the drivers for the 3800 would run the 3600, but the
firmware is different and is on the motherboard of the 3800.

Kind regards,
eileen

Re: scanner not detected

2013-11-29 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi Mark,

I am using a MBA and have installed the Plustech 3600 scanner on it. you will
need to download the driver from www.plustech.com. The way that I was able to
find it was to Google it. I believe I use the search string of Plustech 3600
drivers for Mac. If memory serves me, the only OS file was for an earlier
version for the operating system, but I managed to get it installed. I just
downloaded Prizmo and will be testing it within the next couple of days. If you
can't find the driver for the Plustech 3600, email me off list and I will send
it to you. HTH.

RE: battery status

2013-11-19 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi,

When I first got my MBA about 2 1/2 months ago, I had the same question.
Over the weekend, I finally got my first alert when the MBA went down to 5%.
So, you stated that you were plugging in at 7%, which would not trip the
alert. I have no idea if this alert can be changed like increasing it to
10%. I was wondering if other more seasoned Mac users can chime in on how to
configure the battery alert percentage to be increased or to have a shortcut
on the desktop to access this info instead of opening the status menu.

Thanks.

I wasn't aware that this existed on my Air until reading this thread. I am
experimenting around with the settings, but I need some guidance. I first

Thanks in advance.

Hi Andy,

thanks for the explanation of where the built-in mic is found. Since, I have
basically used a PC, I assumed that the microphone was where you described. I
have a pair of headsets that has a mic to it. I will give this a try in a
little bit. Would this arrangement of the mic with the headset work to record
lectures of considerable length or would a dedicated external mic be more
appropriate for these types of tasks?

Thanks for getting back to me quickly.

Are you using the built in mic? It might be that you are too far from it.
It's not mounted on the top of the screen, as on some laptops, but is on the
left hand side, just below where the headphones plug in, so you might like to
bend your head over that way smile the better way in my opinion, is use a
pair of compatible headphones that have a built in mic, the mic will be
closer to your mouth, and you can sit upright smile -

Number of Events Not Displayed in Calendar On ML

2013-11-11 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello List,

I entered 2 different appointments on my iPhone4. In my iCloud settings on
the phone, I have calendar checked to be synced to other devices. When I
open my Mac Air and go to the calendar, I don't have a number indicating the
amount of events for a specific date. Is this a behavior that I should see
in Mountain Lion in the calendar app like in iOS 6.1.2? When I enter on the
date that has an appointment, it is listed there. Can you also get a list of
appointments in ML like on the Phone? Please advise and let me know if there
is a setting in the calendar preferences that needs to be checked or
unchecked in ML. I am just over 2 months out learning the Apple OS system
and doing pretty well, but it's now the fine tuning of different apps or
software that I need more instructions with.

Thanks in advance for all of your assistance.

Cheers,
Eileen

Manually Choosing Updates from App Store

2013-10-29 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi All,

Last night I checked the App Store for my updates. I am holding off in updating
to the latest OS, but there are 4 other updates that I want to install. I
clicked on the manual update button and I thought I had selected Safari 6.1.
However, it never installed and finally received the time out error message.
Could someone please give me precise instructions on how this is done? I don't
want to install the wrong update.

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Eileen accidentally

Formatting/partitioning an external drive on a Mac

2013-10-21 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello,

I have a 2 tB external drive that I am using with my PC. I know that I need to
move all of the folders/files off before undertaking this task. I understand
that I need to go to utilities-disk utility in the main hard drive. What I am
seeking are step-by-step instructions on how to complete the partition process
after the above has been done. I would appreciate any input on this subject.

Thanks in advance.

Printer Questions on The Mac Air

2013-10-13 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello,
The installation of my Brother printer was smooth. Here are my questions:
1. Where do I find the printer located on the Air?
2. Using USB to connect-Is there a Safe to remove option like on the PCside
where?
3. Since Mountail Lion found the printer automatically, were the scanner
drivers installed too?
Please advise.

Thanks.

Adding Items to the Rotor On the Trackpad

2013-10-04 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello,

I was wondering if it is possible to add items to the rotor on the trackpad. I
don't see a rotor option for edit fields and I know when Safari opens that
there is one. Of course, the VO cursor lands on it, but if one is filling out a
form or an order form to shop, it would be nice to be able to jump from field
to field. Any suggestions on where to find it and how to add this option would
be appreciated

Thanks in advance.

Best,

You can set up quick keys in quick nav to do this, but to add jut go to vo
utility then to web and in there should be a rotor tab for you to play with.
You have to check the ones you wan tin the pop up button thing. It's not an

to the new button, I select the change button for the RTF. I interact with
the table for the family font type and select Ariel, regular, and 12 pt. When I
return to the edit field and press VO-T, Ariel bold is still selected. Is there
is a step I am missing to get the type face to change from bold to regular?
Please advise,as I would like to use this program instead of TextEdit.

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Eileen

Backing Up iPhone to 2 Different Computers

2013-10-02 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello List,

Because my Pc has been my main computer for so many years, all of my backups
from my iPhone4 have been to that computer. Now that I have purchased my Air,
can I back the phone up to the Air also. I am running the current version of
iTunes on both computers. I didn't want to back the phone up if it would cause
problems in the future. Please advise, as I don't want to precede until I know
I can do it.

Thanks in advance.

RE: 8 Dot Braille With Apex and the Air

2013-10-01 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello All,

Thanks for all of the responses. I have completed the changes and have
tested the BrailleNote apex out with the MBA. Now, the trick is to learn
some of the commands that are unique to the MBA. I have gone to Humanware's
support page and read the command list for the Macs. There was one that
didn't make sense and that was to pan to the right, which used the same
command for panning to the left. I need to dedicate more time in using the
Apex with the computer, which may not be until the weekend.

Thanks again for the assistance.

Eileen

Hi all!
Just a quickie!
After pressing VO+f8 each item in the table has a Command key+number so
Braille would be Command+9 and will take you straight there! Command+8 for
commanders and so on!

 Hello Eileens

In VoiceOver Utility, (VoiceOver+F8), scroll down to the Braille category
and look under the Layout tab. There you will see q checkboxes; Use
Contracted Braille, and Use 8-Dot Braille. Modify their status to suit your
needs. You might also want to turn off the status cells. Gordon has the Apex
and these cells just wasted space for him.

 Warm regards

 Hello All,

Thanks for the welcome letter Gordon. Last night, I was able to pair my
Braille Note with the MacBook Air. However I noticed the braille display
using 8 cell braille with the computer. Is there a setting on the Air in
system preferences that will only display a 6 dot cell configuration? I am
not use to 8 dot braille and I am having problems reading the braille. I
need to fix this first before learning all of the braille commands that are
applicable to the MacBook Air.

Thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction to correct this.

 Best,
 Eileen
