Re: Apple's Xcode tutorial
Hi Ray, just some words about the iOS simulator. It is quite accessible. One can move around on the simulated screen with VoiceOver, observing its content. You can also press buttons, input text and such things. However, it seems that there is not always everything visible for VoiceOver on the screen and the feedback to user actions sometimes lacks quite a bit. So, it sometimes is a real pain to use the iOS simulator and I prefer to test on physical devices. Greetings Jan --- MouseKick - Die Mäuse kommen! When you test your apps on XCode, a simulator comes up where a developer can test out the app functionality and see if things work. I couldn't use that with VoiceOver. I more or less tuned out of all email for about two weeks. I tried that tutorial a while back and got lost. It’s probably my background and training, but I always seem to have more luck following books rather than tutorials. If you’re a bookshare member, they have plenty of XCode stuff. Indeed, all oreilly books are there by default. Here’s an offer for you: if you want to take a look on sites like: www.oreilly.com www.informit.com www.apress.com www.bookshare.org you might find books you find interesting. The first thing I’d do is start by learning the Objective C language. All cocoa apps are built on this, and a knowledge will help you. Anyway back to my offer: If you find books that you think might be of use, either post here or contact me offlist and I’ll happily take a look for you and tell you what I think. I’ve not done app development, but I’ve written utilities for mac. I’m a university academic who teaches programming (among other things) so I’ve needed to know the basics. App/application development is my study gig for the next few months as I suspect I may get a course in mobile development to teach next year. Definitely look at MV-Dev. Re: Seeking Help with XCode
Hi Ray, you want to connect an Ui element that you defined in Interface Builder to your code, right? You may try to add the following line of code to your ViewController.h file: @property (nonatomic, strong) IBOutlet UIButton *button; where button is the name of your UIButton element. Depending on how you defined button in IB, there could be some variation in this line. So it might be a bit tricky to establish the connection by hand.I am not sure, wether there is a documentation about this mixed approach, since normally the developer would use the drag and drop method to do it. As already mentioned, I do completely skip IB and write all neccessary things directly in code. For this button example, I would declare it in ViewController.h like this: @property (nonatomic, strong) UIButton *button; In ViewController.m I would declare a method for the button action: - (void) buttonAction:(id)sender { // some interesting code here } Finally, one would create the button element either in the loadView: or viewDidLoad: method in ViewController.m: // initialized the button: self.button = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeSystem]; // define the action method: [self.button addTarget:self target:@selector(buttonAction:) forControlEvent:UIControlEventTouchUpInside]; // set a button dimension: self.button.frame = CGRectMake(10, 10, 88, 44); // set a button title: [self.button setTitle:@Button 1 forControlState:UIControlStateNormal]; // add the button to your view hierarchy: [self.view addSubview:self.button]; You may take a look at the references of * UIViewController * UIview * UIControl * UIButton and some others on the iOS developer library for more details. Once you got the hang of it, you are much faster than clicking around in IB and Apple's documentation will provide you all information you need. Regrettably, most of the introduction documents on the Apple Developer Portal rely on Interface Builder, since this would be the preferred method for a sighted developer. So far, I haven't found a really nice introduction for a VO user. If there is someone out there knowing about, please let me know. There are some books around for this purpose. I can recommend the iPhone cook book of Erica Sadun, which is available on iBooks. However, it will cost a bit of money. I hope this will help you a bit. XCode has gotten better with each successive release, but it still has a way to go (last I checked) Honestly, you've managed to do more with it than I ever did, but then again, I gave up trying after snowleopard was released. All I can tell you is that there are alternatives to XCode, but they come with their own set of issues. If you do manage to get XCode to behave properly, I'd be interested in hearing how it was done. I pretty much gave up developing for osx entirely other than a few terminal apps here and there precisely because of the horrible vo support in XCode and the shear amount of work required by other methods. Honestly, the only way to develop for osx (imo) is via java, since it happily takes care of the whole gui environment for you. However, since apple's support for java keeps fluctuating, and sun and apple seem to be at odds over who/how java should be handled on osx, I'm not sure java will remain a viable option much longer either. sigh Lately, I've gone back to linux for about half of my computing usage. I switch between osx and linux depending on what I'm doing at any given moment. I honestly thought osx would be my 100 percent os there for a while, but the lack of support for vi programmers has really put a crimp in that for me, so I'm a dual osx/linux user again, and I'm happy with that. So, if you do manage to get osx to allow you to build a program from start to finish, and you can do so without sighted assistance, and you can make it look the way you want, by all means, let me know, at that point, it may be worth it for me to take another look at osx for development, but until then, I'm staying with my linux/osx combo. --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find an archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at either the list's own dedicated web archive: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/mac-access/index.html or at the public Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/. MouseKick for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Dear listers, I would like to point your interest to my new iOS app MouseKick. It is a game, where you have to tap appearing mice in a cheese as fast as you can. It can be played by both, sighted and visually impaired users. Apart from the nice animation, the mice also do have their individual sounds, which guide us to the right position on screen. Re: Uploading Screenshots
Hallo Harmony, you have to capture the app screenshots on your own. I use the following steps in Xcode to do this: * Run the app on the device you want the screenshots to be taken from. * Go to the organizer window. * Choose Devices in the toolbar. * Interact with the table on the right and go to the device, where the app is running on. * If is not already, expand the device information. * Go to Screenshots. * At the bottom of the screen, there is now a number of buttons. The last one takes a screenshot of the current screen. * Above the buttons, there is a table of all existing screenshots on the device. The most recent screenshot is the last in the table. * The third button at the bottom exports a selected screenshot to wherever you want. You can also take screenshots by pressing the sleep and home button together at the same time. The image is then placed in the camera role of the device. Can I use the default ones like the little png files that come in the folder with all my program files, or do I have to capture my own? If I can, which ones should I use, but if not, how would I go about capturing a a screenshot of an iPhone app? Re: Yet Another, Question, About Xcode
Hallo, for iOS, it is possible to write application code in C++. However, as far as I know, you always need a core structure in Objective-C containing the main class and an AppDelegate implementation. I would also recommend to implement a view controller to provide a core user interface. You get this basic structure when creating an empty project in Xcode. From this basic Objective-C classes you can call C and C++ functions or classes. Can anyone advise me on the best settings for an iPhone and a Mac application please? I want to use the c++ programming language, but so far nearly everything I've seen has been about objective c. I thought you could use any programming language you wanted, or is it Apple law that you have no choice but to use objective c? I don't want anything fancy for my programs, just to have it in its own little window rather than command line stuff, and i only really want the code I put there, not a load of other files. I did try using g++ which compiles stuff just fine, but if I'm to make my programs into .app files or whatever, I've got to use xcode I guess, since if I compile with g++ and then give my executable file the .app extention, I get the message saying that the classic environment is no longer supported. Sorry for the cross posting to the lists, but I seem to be getting nowhere with this and google is not my friend. Well, the only stuf I have found is mainly old stuff. Version 2.0 of the ColorVisor is out
Hallo list, today, Version 2.0 of the ColorVisor has been released and is now available on the App Store and for update. There are a number of new features. Some of them are: * There is now a better color naming due to refreshed reference color palettes. * You can choose to identify only basic colors or differentiated color shades. * VoiceOver verbosity during the color scan is now configurable. By default, it does not announce color names during camera calibration processes. * Additionally, a sound is played when the camera is calibrating itself. This two things avoid the announcement of wrong color names during the calibration, which was a problem in former versions. * The CMYK color components were replaced by HSB. VoiceOver support is still unbroken and you can configure the ColorVisor to behave as in former Versions. The ColorVisor and even more details can be found on the App Store at http://iTunes.com/app/ColorVisor More information and a user manual are available on the ColorVisor support page at http://visorApps.com/ColorVisor/ If you have any questions, hints, or comments do not hesitate to contact me via this list, on my web site, or by using the new in-app support request.
