Re: best drive for super Dooper

2012-07-25 Thread Jonathan Cohn
You need the partition map to be set correctly when formatting a drive before
it can be used as a bootable drive. I don't remeber the exact sequence, but
you need to erase the disk and then there will be an advanced or details button
that needs to e examined to set the partition map correctly. Also, some older
Macintoshes (perhaps only the pre-Intel) can only boot from a firewire hard
disk.

Re: Is there a way to batch convert rtf files to txt using osx

2012-07-15 Thread Jonathan Cohn
You have a few options.

The first is to see if there is a save a copy function in the automation work
flows.
Even if not, one should be able to write an AppleScript to duplicate a Pages
document.

Next is the question of batching.
Is this a one time event? Do you want a contextual menu? Or perhaps a folder
action that occurs every time a new file is added to your recipes folder and
it is type rtf.

Also, are you going to attempt to process the recipe for example, look for
ingredient lists and reformat them to one ingredient per a line.

You might want to look at one of the recipe management software packages
instead. My wife and children love Yummy Soup, though I have only tested it to
seee if I can read a recipe and never made extensive use.

Best wsies,

Jonathan

Re: How do I do what's listed in the link?

2012-07-11 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

This is possible, but it depends on how your mouse follows voice over and also
how the exact javascript to expose the hidden links works. In any case, this
process will be easier using the IOS inscructions.

If for some reason this is not possible, and you have mouse follows VO then:

Go to the hover area, and then turn off cursor tracking.

If the javascript was written to conform to Section 508 of the ADA then the
hover link must be accessible with keyboard actions. In any case, once you
turn off tracking, and do a list of links you should find the hide link. I
can't try this week, since I am only around iPhones.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: Mac book crash and recovery

2012-07-05 Thread Jonathan Cohn
The fan running is only a symptom one can not tell what the cause is.

Possibilities:
1. Large amounts of processing. Take a look at activity monitor.
2. Insufficient air flow for cooling. (best to use computer on hard flat
surface).
3. Sensor not correctly interpreting / compensating for temperature changes.

Only an authorized Apple repair center could fix that last one. But you culd
certainly make sure the vents are clear and look for long running high CPU
processes.

Best wishes,

JOnathan

First after joining iTunes match I did a lot of downloading of improved
tracks. after that I noticed that for a few days my fan continually runs.
 usually it never ran.

Then yesterday I was using my computer with many programs open. It seemed to
be doing pretty well. I had a VM window open, Mail, iTunes, safari, at one
point while in the vm I opened internet explorer and after that I had no
 sound.

I tried every trick I know and then finally restarted my computer. I then
got vo back but only in the finder and only working in a very choppy way.

I could not get VO to work in other ways. For example if I opened the dock
VO would not respond and let me know it was open. If I tried to open a a
application in finder it didn't talk.

This morning I called Apple and I asked them to remind me how to restart with
the P Ram. He didn't think that would help but I tried that while he went to
 look some things up.

to restart this way I held down the P, R, and the command and Option keys
while restarting. I did this until the start up chime was heard three times.

Well, that did the trick. I have voice over back.

Any ideas what happened and why this helped?

Also, my fan is still running hot all the time. is this spotlight working on
the 11,000 updated songs in my library?
That seems strange as I have finished that many days ago and the computer has
been on many days after the download completion.
That was one scary crash for me!

Which should already have your user name and password in place and then all
you have to to is press the login link!

After that you might have to go to the window chooser to select the room in

 No sighted help needed!

TC are working on making the Mac version better!
So we will not have to jump through a few hoops to enter a room!

Gordon,

What I have read is that this is true with all of the hardware that was shipped
with Lion on it. Apparently the Lion on the new systems is slightly different
from the Lion being shipped via the AppStore.

One important new feature that is only available on the new Air's and Mini's is
the option-command-R at boot. This will download a copy of Lion from the Apple
even if the recovery partition has been corrupted or destroyed.

The complaints I hear now remind me very much of when Apple decided to ship the
first iMac computers with a CD and no floppy of any kind. People kept asking
about how software installs would work... I don't believe that affordable high
speed network access is sufficiently available at this time, but perhaps Apple
is just a wee bit ahead of their time once again. There were options when the
floppy was dropped as standard and there are options now for the optical
storage. We won't really know if the dropping of Apple optical media was a
mistake or just another branch in the evolution of the computer. One thing is
definitely true, and that is it will save Apple on not only the initial
hardware but on repairs to the fragile drives. I would expect that everybody in
this group knows somebody who had a optical drive stop working.

Jonathan

 Hi Nic

It's worth pointing out again that the DVD option doesn't work on the server
 hardware.

 Hi!

Yeah, the button is definitely there. I've done it, too, but it's kind of a
roundabout way of performing a clean install. The fastest way I've found so
far was to burn it to a DVD, then use Disk utilities on that DVD to format
the drive and install the operating system. Installing OS X Lion, then
launching its recovery partition only to reformat, then download the image
off of Apple's servers seems ridiculous, even though that seems to be the
method Apple even recommends. I guess, in truth, it was meant as an upgrade
from Snow Leopard to Lion given its distribution through the App Store, and I
can see why. Since the Recovery Partition it carves out needs the Application
later in order to get access to the disk image on your internal drive, it
can't format the drive nor reinstall it from scratch without a DVD or
downloading a new installer. Now, if it only downloaded an application which
contained an application to extract the recovery image, it'd be another story
 as you cou
 ld
then download the entire operating system off of Apple's servers from the
 recovery partition.
