Re: [Mac-access]: My Mac Podcasts

2014-11-30 Thread Sandratomkins
hi,
Just a thought here, I really know nothing about it but…would it be possible to
divide, say, an MP3 file into small 32nd sections and then play it to the
dictate function on the phone in order to have it transcribed?I know from
experience that the dictate function is extremely powerful and I don't think we
are using it to its full potential yet.perhaps, there is room here for a new
app?to wit, and that that would take an MP3 file, divided up, and play it, as
it were, into the edit box of, for example, notes.in this way we could
transcribe radio programs, lectures, announcements et cetera.what do people
think?

Just musing,
Sandy

Re: Voice dream and zip files

2014-04-19 Thread Sandratomkins
Will,
The first step, how to get it into Filer, will depend upon where the file is.
For now then, I will imagine it is an email attachment. If you double tap and
hold on the attachment you should be offered some options where to open the
file. Choose Filer. Then you will have to find the file in Filer, unfortunately
this is the worst aspect of the app. If, like me, you have hundreds of files in
there, you will have to scroll down to the correct alphabetical position to
find your file. Once found, double tap on it. You will be offered some options,
the first of which will be "Unarchive". Double tap on It. You will be taken
back to your list of files, but now you have two versions of your file one
zipped and one unzipped. Double tap and hold on the unzipped text file. You
will be offered choices of apps to open the file in. Choose Voice Dream reader.
And you are done!

Hope this makes sense,
Sandy

Re: Voice dream and zip files

2014-04-19 Thread Sandratomkins
Hello Will,
This happens with zipped text files for me too! So, I use an app called
"Filer". In this way, I can uncompress the files in Filer and then send them to
Voice Dream reader.

Hope this helps, Sandy

Don't try CamFind. It is free! It is excellent! You can take as many shots as
you like! And it is very good at recognising products even when not absolutely
square into the picture.

Also, try red laser for barcode recognition.

Re: Wire Colors

2014-01-07 Thread Sandratomkins
Martin,
This is a bit of a tall order! But I can make a suggestion that you could try:
The app I would suggest is called camfind. For example, I just took a shot of
my coffee mug and the answer was black-and-white striped mug. Which is
correct! So, if you use this app and isolate any given wire by sliding a sheet
of plain paper underneath it, so that CamFind is only looking at one wire at a
time, you may have success! Give it a try anyway, I think, hope I'm Right here,
CamFind is a free app. So there's nothing to be lost…
Happy snapping,
Sandy

Re: crosswords for mac

2014-01-07 Thread Sandratomkins
Hello anne and will,
I too am a fan of the Guardian crosswords. I do them most days on my iPhone for
running 613. I also have a for S running the latest 7.04 release. However,
using the latest release on my for S the access ability of the Guardian
crossword has been broken. So, I'm glad that I kept the old iOS running on my
iPhone for because this means I can still do the crosswords. After playing with
the for S and observing the differences, I think the problem is one of
containers. Containers having been introduced to the iPhone iOS, since version
seven, I think may have caused some problems with curser focusing/and jumping
between containers. I do not have containers turned on in my rotor, so, will
try this later on and see if it makes a difference to how well VO deals with
the crosswords. In short, if you're running a pre-iOS seven version then you
should be good to go, but if you are running version 7X then you may well find
it frustrating.

Happy solving,
Sandy

Hi,
I wonder could someone send a link to the app for the iPhone? I tried to find
it in the App Store, but they seem to be a zillion apps called Paprica And
then something or other i just don't know which one to go for.

 Hi Dane,

There are separate versions of Paprika Recipe Manager for the iPhone (and
iPod Touch), iPad, and the Mac. You might not see the app come up for
your iPhone if you're running iOS 6. But in that case you should be able
to purchase the app from iTunes on your computer, and then download the
latest version of the app for your operating system directly onto your
iPhone. That's the May 2013 version, I think, and it's perfectly
 accessible.

The layout of the app uses the area of the iPad screen, so I think it was
a different enough design problem to warrant a separate app.

I'm a little less panicked now, because I realize these apps should stay
on sale at least through Thanksgiving (this Thursday). I was trying to
find a blog article stating how long this would be on sale, and came
across an old entry that said it would be through Sunday (meaning that
last year it was four or five days, since they didn't put it on sale until
just before Thanksgiving.). Thinking that it would only be on sale until
 tonight didn't make much sense.

So anyone who wants to ask more about these apps at leisure, go right
 ahead.

 Cheers,

 Esther

Brenda,
Have you thought about getting a good battery backup for your phone rather than
paying out huge money for another device? There are lots of options on the
market and they are not too pricey.

Re: Final question about IOS for now: copying from e-mail/web page

2013-07-17 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi Chris,

I am no expert re selecting text etc, and i should tell you that of all the
VO gestures, selecting text is the least well thought out. It seems to vary
depending upon where you are re apps etc, so you can never be quite sure. The
easiest way to deal with selecting text is to use a separate keyboard, upon
which, there are various key commands to help you do this.

Now, I shall try to assist re the pinch gesture, but others will probably
do better! Your first mistake is to use more than 2 digits. This pinch gesture
will only work with 2 fingers or thumbs. All of us do this differently, I
selected the following from your message by using my 2 index fingers, sliding
them apart across the screen, having first chosen lines in the rotor. I don't
think it matters if you are in landscape or portrait, i have mine set to
portrait/locked. But withever way you have your phone, you must slide your
fingers as if in line with the text, so, if in portrait mode, slide them across
the narrow axis of the screen.

A tip I learned from David, on this list, was to sort of hit the screen
running. That is, rather than place your fingers on the screen and then slide
them apart, start from just above the screen, so they touch the screen as you
lower them and slide them apart at the same time. I sort of feel like a
conductor, making two U shapes with my 2 index fingers.

possibly, I have made this even more incomprehensible to you, but at least
one thing should be clear, use only 2 digits.

Here is my selected/copied text from your message.

OK, a lot of you have told me that you can do a penching gesture to select and
unselect text if I need to copy something
Sandy.

Re: TextGrabber + Translator iOS app is on sale for $1.99

2013-06-06 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi Esther and all,

Just to add an observation re Text Grabber since the newer interface: TG is
now much more forgiving of slight skewing. So, for those who don't have a
StandScan Pro, or who like to use the OCR Apps free-hand, TG is now usable that
way too.

This is definitely an app worth having even for those who already have
Prizmo.

Thanks, Sandy.

Re: OCR scanning software for use with voice over.

2013-05-05 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi Stuart,

Depending upon how you are using your phone to scan, I would recommend Text
Grabber plus Translator. The price seems to vary, a friend bought it the other
day and it cost him just under 9 Euros, but I have seen it on offer for half of
that. A word of warning though: Text Grabber is a very good OCR App, but is
tricky to use if scanning free-hand. If, on the other hand, you are using the
StandScan Pro (a collapsable light-box with a 12 volt option) then, because of
the added precision and lighting conditions, Text Grabber is easy to use and
yields excellent results. The interface is simplicity itself. You just position
the phone, turn on the lights of the StandScan Pro, place your document on the
base of the box and double-tap the screen. Text Grabber will do the rest for
you. If you are taking the shots free-hand, then, perhaps, prizmo is the way to
go, but is more involved in its interface. SayText can be really quite good,
but takes longer to process and many people find
it hard to use free-hand. Saytext can also be used, in manual mode, with the
StandScan Pro.

Many people like text detective, I have not really played with it much,
because it only seems to take a shot of half the sheet of foolscap at a time
which doesn't work for me.

There are several other apps, and, as to which is the best will depend upon
if you are going to use the phone free-hand or with a StandScan Pro.

Good luck and happy scanning,
Sandy.

Re: Copy and Paste: IOS: Mail and Safari

2012-11-10 Thread Sandratomkins
hI,

Don't know if this will help, but say I want to copy or define one word, I
set the rotor to "words" then I flick up or down to hear the word I want, then
I doubletap and hold till I hear the gloopy trill sound, then I touch the
bottom of the screen at the bottom left and flick left until I hear "define"
then if I flick left I hear "select all" and once more I get "copy" and I
doubletap that. This will work for lines or select all as well. I particularly
use this for "define" which brings up the onboard dictionary.

HTH, Sandy.
