Re: Formatting an external hard drive

2014-07-11 Thread Thuy Mallalieu
Hi all. I tried formatting to xfat I can keep files that are bigger than 4 gig
in size, but when I connected the drive to a Windows machine, it didn't
recognise that the drive had been formatted properly. Is there something else I
need to do to make windows recognise the xfat format?

Re: Voice dream and zip files

2014-04-19 Thread Thuy Mallalieu
Hi William. I don't know if you managed to sort this out or not, but here's
what I do. I assume you are downloading the legacy text file formats from
TNAUK? So I'll give you the steps that I use and I'm afraid it's a bit
longwinded but it works. You will need to have a file management program such
as phone drive, which can unzip and rename files etc.
1. go onto the website and find the link for the zipped file;
2. double tap on the file;
3. it will probably bring up a login window if you haven't already signed in;
4. log in;
5. go to the bottom of the screen and swipe your way back to Open in' and
double tap;
6. swipe through the choices and choose to open in some kind of file management
app such as phone drive which I find to be really good.
7. phone drive will automatically open and let you know that the file has been
saved in its import
folder;
8. navigate to the file itself and double tap
9. phone drive will ask if you want to
unzip it;
10. choose unzip;
11. the unzipped file appears to be a microsoft word document, which ought to
open up in voice dream, but unfortunately, it doesn't.
Not sure why, but I have never been able to get those files from TNAUK to open
up in word.
12. go to the top of the screen and swipe right to edit and double tap.
13. find the word alleged word document and press the rename button next to it.
14. rename it to have a .txt extention
15. hit the save button and the done button to finish editing.
16. double tap on the newly renamed text file and phone drive opens it up in a
text viewer.
17. find the menuView icon and double tap it.
18. swipe to open in and double tap.
19. choose to open in voice dream.
I don't know why the unzipped files don't open unless you rename them as text
files but that has always been the case for me. Hope this works for you?
Cheers
Thuy

Brenda it's inside the oval shaped recess above the volume controls. You have
to use your fingernail to flick it up or down.

Re: Announcing a revolutionary remote for iOS VoiceOver users

2014-02-13 Thread Thuy
Yes. I have one of these, and they are really good. Not sure why the
Android version has to be a completely separate device, which means
that you have to have the right model for each corresponding OS? Maybe
it's so you have to buy more units if you're like me and like to
experiment with different platforms. Can get a little complex after a
while as you have to remember which mode to set it to, i.e navigation
mode, texting mode, media control mode etc. I don't find texting all
that quick with it either, since you don't have the T9 predictive mode
that was available with Symbian phones., so can be slow as you have to
press the numeric key however many times to get the corresponding
letter. I'd say that it's ideal for basic media controls if you are
listening to music or audio books. The battery life seems good, and
they really are tiny and compact. A little expensive in my opinion -
80 UK pounds! All things considered though, a nice little gadget.

Cheers

Hi Donal. I find that if you have the rota set to containers, it cuts down on
the number of keystrokes needed to get to the message area. Hope this helps?

Re: iPhone 5c versus 5s

2013-10-22 Thread Thuy
Hi Paul. I have the 5s, but I have heard from people who have the 5c
that it seems a bit sluggish, the speaker doesn't sound as good, it's
possibly slightly heavier in weight, it doesn't support the
fingerpring sensor, it has older architecture processor. So for the
sake of 80 quid difference, I would go for the 5s. Hope this helps?

Re: Re-installing an iPhone Appp

2013-01-14 Thread Thuy Mallalieu
Hi Paul. To delete the app from your iPhone, 1. find the app on whichever page
of the home screen it has been installed; 2. double tap and hold till it says
'moving x'; 3. lift your finger so you don't actually move it on top of another
app by accident; 4. find the app again and double tap till it brings up the app
delete confirmation 5. double tap on the delete button; 6. press the home
button to exit the delete procedure. Once the app has been deleted from the
phone, you should be able to go back into the app store and reinstall it
without the need to sync with itunes on the computer. Hope this helps?

Re: hq voices on ipad

2012-05-16 Thread Thuy
Hi Will. You need to switch off the 'use compact voice' option in
settings/general/accessibility/voiceover. You might also want to
include the languages you want to switch between in the language rota,
and set your region to british English. Also you need to be connected
to wifi and leave it set to the language of choice for some time in
order for the high quality voices to be downloaded to the ipad. It
might take a while but switching the 'use compact voice' off should
force the high quality voice to be downloaded. Hope this helps?

I don't think it is set up if you buy it from the network provider, only if you
buy from an Apple store.

Re: Bluetooth keyboard for my IPhone

2011-12-16 Thread Thuy
Hi Dennis. If you want a folding keyboard, my recommendation would be
the Freedom Universal. Unfortunately, they've replaced it with the
Freedom Pro range, which I don't rate as much. You might be lucky and
get hold of a Universal second hand somewhere. The main difference is
that the hinge seems to be to the wrong side of the B key, which
displaces it from the usual position that you would expect, whereas
the Universal still keeps the correct alignment of the B N and M keys.
The Freedom I-Connex keyboard is a cheaper version of the Pro with
just HID protocol, but still suffers from the same key misalignment.
If you don't mind that though, the feel on all these Freedom keyboards
is very nice. Hope this helps?

Cheers

Thuy

IOS 5 and Braille command for item chooser

2011-10-18 Thread Thuy
Hi everyone. One of the brilliant new features of IOS 5 is the item
chooser which can be invoked with a two-finger triple tap. Does anyone
know how to perform that command from a Braille display please?

Cheers

Thuy

Re: QuickNav question

2011-10-16 Thread Thuy Mallalieu
Hi Jonathan
You have to open up voiceover utilities, interact with the utility categories,
go down to commanders tab, select quicknav commander and vo right to and
checkbox to enable single letter navigation. Hope this helps

Re: Braille Displays and iPod Touch

2011-09-08 Thread Thuy
Hi Desi. My favourite compact Braille displays are: BrailleConnect 12
from Baum/Humanware, Esys 12 from Eurobraille, and Braillesense 18
from HIMS. I know also that the Braille Pen 12 works well with the IOS
devices and all of these keep their bluetooth pairings as far as I'm
aware. Hope this helps?

Cheers

Thuy
