One-Line messages, [Was "Spaces on Mountain Lion"]

2012-11-09 Thread Gordon, Lynne & Tracy
Hi all

This is nothing personal, I just happen too be responding to Patricia's
message. This message was a one-line question, yet the entire thread was
quoted. Could we all please try a little harder to have some consideration for
those whose ISP imposes caps on throughput. Quoting entire chains of messages
just to ask a one-line question is wasteful in the extreme, and, again this is
nothing personal, but the quoting of all that extraneous text is wasteful in
the extreme.

This issue is one which is mentioned in the list policy document, but out is
one which is frequently disregarded by members. So please, could we all try a
little harder to have some consideration for our fellow list members who are on
capped monthly tariffs.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Gordon

Re: Spaces on Mountain Lion

2012-10-29 Thread Esther
Hi Paul,

Rats! I composed a reply, got called a way, and then posted before I read your
note. Well, hopefully that Apple Knowledge Base document will help someone
else.

As for how you created a space in the first place, the non-VoiceOver directions
say you can create a new space when you "hover" your mouse over the top right
corner of the screen in Mission Control and press "tab". Maybe you
accidentally navigated to the "Add Desktop" button in Spaces and used part of a
keystroke to create a Space?

Glad you got that sorted.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Spaces on Mountain Lion

2012-10-29 Thread Esther
Hi Paul,

Apparently the specifications for Spaces are now under Mission Control, and
there may not be a way to disable Spaces -- the options don't seem to cover
this. Try using the Apple Knowledge Base document on Mission Control for
instructions on creating, navigating, and closing desktop spaces with
VoiceOver. Hopefully you can close the second desktop this way.
• VoiceOver Utility (Mountain Lion): Use Mission Control
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5814

Here's the relevant section pasted in:

In Mission Control, a row of thumbnails across the top of the screen represents
Dashboard, desktop spaces, and your full-screen apps. The lower part of the
screen shows an Exposé view of the open windows on your desktop, grouped by app.

• Open Mission Control. If the Trackpad Commander is not turned on, you
can swipe up on the trackpad using three fingers.
• Navigate to the Spaces list or Expose windows group by pressing
VO-Left Arrow or VO-Right Arrow.
To add a desktop to the Spaces list, navigate to the Add Desktop button,
located immediately after the Spaces List.

• Interact with the Spaces list or the Expose windows group by pressing
VO-Shift-Down Arrow.
• Navigate to an item in the list or group by pressing VO-Up Arrow or
VO-Down Arrow until you hear the item you want to work with.
• To work with the selected item, such as a desktop, press
VO-Space bar.

• To close the selected desktop, press VO-Command-Escape, and
then confirm your action by pressing Return.

To exit Mission Control without making a selection, press Escape or swipe down
with three fingers.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Spaces on Mountain Lion

2012-10-29 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hi Esther,
OK I have discovered that you can get rid of a space in Mountain Lion by going
to the mission control application and then interacting wit the list of spaces
and then moving the VO cursor to the space you want to get rid of. YOu then
press Control+Command+OPtion+Escape to close that space. This brings up a
confirm menu and you press Return to confirm that you really do want to get rid
of that space.
SO I have now got rid of the unwanted spaces, but am unclear how they got
created in the first place.
Best regards

Re: Spaces on Mountain Lion

2012-10-29 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hi Esther,
Many thanks for your prompt reply. Yes I originally thought that system
preferences would help me but on Mountain Lion I do not see any preference
panes related to spaces. I thought spaces might be3 a subset of mission control
or doc or desktop but alas no. Any ideas on what might have happened to the
prefrence pane for spaces in Mountain Lion?

Is it possible that the default for Mountain Lion is to have two spaces each
with its own desktop? This configuration seems to survive system restarts so
maybe I cannot do anything about it?
I will go look at cocktail to see if that has anything in it related to spaces.
Best regards

Re: Spaces on Mountain Lion

2012-10-29 Thread Esther
Hi Paul,

From memory, under System Preferences go to "Exposé & Spaces", then select the
"Spaces" tab. There should be a check boxes for enabling spaces and also
shortcut key assignments. I think I unchecked the options to enable spaces and
set all the shortcut keys to "-". Not sure this is exact for Mountain Lion,
but I typically always disable the Exposé shortcuts, too.

if I disable spaces the spaces I have accidentally created will go away and I
