I just tried it and, to the best of my knowledge, it looks like the
control strip works like this. Anything in the control strip modules
folder is already loaded onto the control strip even if it doesn't show
(but don't ask me why). If you have a module that isn't in the folder,
then you can drag it to the control strip. The module will then be
placed in the folder and on the control strip itself (maybe). To get an
idea of how it works, hold down the Option key and move a module from
the control strip to the desktop. A blank spot will appear at the end of
the control strip. If you look in the control strip modules folder, you
should have one less item than you had. Now drag the item from the
desktop to the control strip. The item will appear where you dropped it
on the control strip, and the module will be added to the folder.

I never really bothered with the control strip, but your letter made me
curious.

Yes, that I can do. but I can't do it the other way around. For example :In
anticipation of my getting an airport, I was goiing to put that module,
which is in the controlstrip modules folder, but not showing on my
controlstrip, into the controlstrip proper. And here I get that module
balking. The help menu says to drag it into the controlstrip. but here all
good spirits leave me. The module jumps back into the folder. Sometimes I
think these modules are somewhere in the controlstrip already, but don't
show up. My strip doesn.t show the modules for airport, for TV and Video
mirroring, speakable items and a few more. Then I think the controlstrip
only holds a certain number and I need to get rid of some before I can put
another one in. But these are all Marta's mind flicks. I do use the monitor
control panel a lot, especially when I need to enlarge the print where i
don't have an enlarge button in the menu bar.

MacGroup: HP Printer problem

2003-04-03 Thread Fran
Recently my HP deskjet began malfunctioning; it would begin to print
and then stop, giving an error msg. that possibly the cover was open,
the connection was broken, etc. -- unlikely possibilities. HP said:
There are known issues such as you are seeing with partial or no
printing when using this printer with Mac OS 9.1. To resolve this,
upgrade the Mac OS to 9.2.1 or later. The updates are available for
download from Apple's website. A workaround which often helps is to plug
the USB cable from the printer into a keyboard port instead of the Mac

I updated to 9.2, and the USB was already plugged into the keyboard.
The same problem exists, but somewhat erratically. I was able to print

only a line or 2 on subsequent printings.
Do any of you have some suggestions? I appreciate your time and help

MacGroup: HP Printer problem

2003-04-03 Thread Ward Oldham
Hi Fran,

First, make sure as HP suggested that you've updated to 9.2.1 or later. You
mentioned 9.2 which implies you need an additional update.

Second, I would not ever plug a printer into the keyboard port but have it
plugged in directly to your Mac. I'm not implying that it won't work. I
just never seen it done.

Assuming that you are using the recommended printer drivers, should you
continue to have problems you may want to run a diagnostic check with
something like Norton's Disk Doctor, Disk Warrior or Disk First Aid.
Directory corruption or damaged system files could also be responsible for
your problems.

Good Luck!

MacGroup: can't empty trash

2003-04-03 Thread Alex Whitman
I'm running 10.2.4. When I try to empty the trash, I get an error box
with the message: The operation cannot be completed because the item
Fr28.psf is locked. I don't know what Fr28.psf is, and Finder
doesn't find it. Within the error box are 2 buttons, Stop and
Continue. When I click Continue I get another error message saying
01.psf is locked. I don't know what that is either. Nonetheless, I
click Continue again and it seems to work, but even when the error
message goes away, a folder called PhotoImpression copy is still in
the trash even though the original PhotoImpression icon is now gone. I
really do want all vestiges of PhotoImpression to disappear. Help?

MacGroup: can't empty trash

2003-04-03 Thread Schoun Regan
Alex,
If you feel comfortable with this...
Open the Terminal application located in /Applications/Utilities
Once in there, type what's on the following line below-case IS important:
cd .Trash
Then hit the return key
This will put you in the trash folder just like you were looking at it from
the Finder except you are looking at it from the inside.
Now type what's below:
ls -la
Then hit the return key
This will show you all the files, even the invisible ones, in your trash.
If you want to get rid of them, type what's in the line below EXACTLY:
sudo rm *.*
And hit the return key
Now enter your password when asked and hit the return key
This tells the computer to become a SUPERUSER for a period of five minutes.
It also tells the computer to remove ANY files in your Trash
You should now quit the Terminal application and click on the Trash Can on
your dock to open the window.
Everything in there should now be gone.

Or you could take the safest route by going to www.versiontracker.com and
downloading...

CanMan
 or
Delete It
 or
DropObliter8
 or
LockBurn
 or
Trash It!
 or
Trash Locked Files
 or
unlockAll

It might be best to use a free or shareware application for this job if you
don't feel comfortable typing, especially since a mistake could erase more
than your data if you are not in the right location at the time.

So, in summation, BE careful if you are not sure what you are doing in the
Terminal and *NEVER* type rm *.* unless you know for sure you are in the
right place.

Let that be a lesson to you kids out there. :)

Hello Marta,

Put your module back into the control modules folder. It will not

Control Strip Modules are similar to control panels, you can have a

MacGroup: can't empty trash

2003-04-03 Thread Jerry Yeager
What is causing the problem is that there are several files (icons and
folders) in this pre-OS-X program that are locked and some may be
invisible as well.

Schoun's advice should work,
but if it does not, then drag everything out of the trash, and use the
get info feature to unlock and change the owner of the files to you.
Delete what you can.
The worse case is that the locked invisible ones still will not
delete. If that happens, Switch to OS-9 and use Res-Edit to change the
invisibility to visible, change the owner, etc. then delete those
things.

chflag

So...if they are locked, and you can't see the locks from the GetInfo dialog
box,
Open the terminal application again and type what you see on the line below:
cd .Trash
Then hit the return key
Then type what you see on the line below:
chflags nouchg *.*
Then hit the return key
This unsets the flag that locks the files.
NOW you can type the line below:
sudo rm *.*
Then hit the return key.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!

That will do the trick if root is allowed to make the changes. My
earlier advice was based on a weird delete problem I have encountered
twice where even logging in as root still resulted in the trash not
getting emptied.

Larger chips have traditionaly been made with two rows of chips on either

properly in newer Powerbooks and iBooks. The 500Mhz iBook has either 64MB or
128MB of Ram in a proprietary slot on the motherboard and another slot where
the user can add memory underneath the keyboard. Remove the keyboard and you
will see a metal plate with two small screws in it (size 0 or 00). Remove the
two screws. Remove the metal plate, and the chip slot is underneath. The
memory chips are keyed, so they will only go in one way.

In the titanium, all you have to do is remove the keyboard, and the chips are
 right there.

Max Memory for the 500mhz iBook is either 576MB or 640MB, depending on if
yours came standard with 64MB or 128MB of RAM.

 Hope this helps!

I think the airport module will show up on the control strip once you
have airport installed. I have 13 modules on my control strip and 17
modules in the folder. If your setup is different then I would imagine
the control strip would be able to go, at least, to the other side of

Assuming that you are using the recommended printer drivers, should you

Directory corruption or damaged system files could also be responsible for

I have an H-P printer plugged into my keyboard and never had any
problems with the setup. My iMac has two USB ports. I have the keyboard
in one and a floppy drive in the other. The floppy drive won't work when
it's plugged into the keyboard. I think it's because of the power
requirements. The printer has a separate power source and only relies on
the USB port for data transfer. I've been using it for over two years
like that so I don't think it will cause any problems. But then you
can't be sure of anything these days.
