Hi Mike,

If JJ's links don't work out, you might try your local Home Depot, etc.,
in the electrical dept. They might have something that would work.

MacGroup: VHS to DVD

2006-03-20 Thread Frank Hammitt
The idea below from Rex is a good one but double check the details on any
DVD burner before you buy. The one mentioned has multiple forms or output,
S-video, composite video, etc but only one input mode and that is DV IEEE
1394. Your VHS player probably only has analog output and will not work on
the unit mentioned. There are others that do have multiple inputs but cost
more.

Belkin used to sell the USB VideoBus II for video capture device for about
$70.00 with Mac drives. I don't see it on their new website but I have one
and would be willing to loan it to you if you like. You can contact me off
list if interested at fhammitt at msn.com.

As Brian O'N has already mentioned if you have or have assess to a DV Video
camera you can set it up as a pass through device and record directly into
the Mac.

One option to consider is that standalone DVD recorders are under $100
nowadays. After rebate this one at CircuitCity is actually just $80:

You presumably already have the VHS player, so just plug it into the
DVD recorder and burn a copy.

MacGroup: System Memory: 'Inactive' vs. 'Free' memory.

Is this memory explanation true for Windows XP as well? I use a pc sometimes
and it seems the performance slows during the day and if I restart the
performance gets better. I am referring to just the feel of the system not
any systems checking tool.

What you're seeing is normal and desirable behavior for a Unix
system. All Unix systems try very aggressively to use all your RAM
all the time. The idea is that unused RAM is being wasted, so they
cache all sorts of useful things there, such as recently opened
files, system libraries and networking information. This RAM can be
freed up very quickly, if it is needed by a program. In the mean
time, it is available hundreds of times faster than through a disk
access.

You can look at the memory allocation by opening up a terminal window
and typing 'top'. Here's part of what my PowerBook shows:

PhysMem: 64.3M wired, 122M active, 286M inactive, 474M used,
550M free
VM: 3.83G + 128M 26028(0) pageins, 0(0) pageouts

Here's what each of the categories means:

wired This is memory that's used all the time and is never freed up.
It's where the operating system kernel lives.

active This is allocated for use and has actually been used recently.

inactive This is allocated for use, but has not been used recently..

used wired+active+inactive

free Not yet used for anything.

Since the power died last night, I just rebooted the machine for the
first time in ages. That's why the free memory is so large. as I
continue to use the machine, more stuff will get cached, and the free
memory will dwindle. This is a good thing because frequently used
data is being cached. As this happens, the whole system speeds up
because your machine doesn't have to go to the slow hard drives as
often. This is one reason why I hardly ever shut down a Mac OS X
machine. People who shut down their machine every night may be taking
a performance hit.

Don't worry about your memory unless the pageouts number in the top
display gets big. This is the indicator that shows you're using all
your RAM and then some.

Here's the same top information 10 minutes later. All I was doing in
the interim was reading email, typing this message and printing a pdf.

PhysMem: 66.4M wired, 226M active, 552M inactive, 746M used,
350M free
VM: 3.94G + 128M 26868(0) pageins, 0(0) pageouts

MacGroup: Sharing Entourage Address Book [heur][bcc][faked-from]

2005-12-12 Thread Frank Hammitt
Recently I had to start using a PC for some Window's specific applications
and tried to get my Entourage address into Outlook.

I tried to save Entourage addresses as vCard's but could not find a way to
do them in a batch. With 1300 names I thought that doing them one at a time
was out of the questions.

Ultimately I saved the files as a .csv and imported them in to Outlook.

I was not able to export my calendar from Entourage to Outlook.

An alternative that might work if you have a Palm is to sync your Entourage
to the Palm desktop then import the Palm desktop to Outlook. There should be
free sync software for this on Microsoft's web site. Check out
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/results.aspx?freetext=entourage%20synchro
nize
 &productID=&DisplayLang=ee

And Chaupra Pocket Mirror (standard edition) v 2.0 is bundled with most Palm
OS software CD for syncing the Palm to Outlook.

Good luck

What about exporting the addresses from one book as vcards and importing
said cards into the other user's address book? Not so simple as just
switching to & fro one address book between two different users, but at
least both users would have access to the same info (provided you export &
import each time you add a name to the address book)...Cathy

Jerry, thanks for the lead. I scanned the 14-page list of scripts for
Entourage, but only found one that seemed it might do what I need. I
downloaded it, but the four and a half page Read Me instructions totally
overwhelmed my ability to comprehend, and scared me off.

Also it did not mention the exact task I'm trying to accomplish. It dealt
with sharing an Address Book between users on different computers, and
between different Identities within the same user account, but no mention of

sharing between two separate user accounts on the same computer.

MacGroup: I tunes diminished sound

2005-05-10 Thread Frank Hammitt
I just completed the 2 recent security software updates. I did not
update OS X Combined 10.3.9 or the I Pod, or I Tunes updates. Now the
music sounds weak, hollow, has an echo and quavers. I tried playing
through the JBL on tour speakers and it still sounds bad. He speakers
are fine on another computer.

Have any ideas? Did I cause a problem by not updating I Tunes?

Does the group have any recommendations of OS X 10.3.9Update Combined?
Is it safe to install? I thought I saw some earlier comments that there
were some issues with 10.3.9.

I am running a G4 PowerBook 667 Mhz @ 512 MB ram.

MacGroup: In depth review of Tiger (English version)

Subject: Re: MacGroup: In depth review of Tiger (English version)

Hopeful to find a reason to want to upgrade to Tiger, I scan-read
through the article. By page:

1 - Introduction
 Waffle
2 - Background
  More waffle
3 - Tiger's new look
Look and feel tweaking. Mail is apparantly
much changed.
4 - Kernel updates
  Yay! I don't care.
5 - Out to launch
Interesting to see if launchd replaces
crond one day. Mainly don't care.
6 - Metadata revisited
Apple still pusing this concept. Nice idea,
never affected me.
7 - Extended attributes
Interesting, but unlikely to affect the user.
8 - Access control lists
Nice to see, slightly more likely to affect
a user, but not by much.
9 - Spotlight
The darling child of Tiger. I suspect it'll
affect me as much as Expose, ie) I'll use it once every now and then,
but all it'll do is save a tiny bit of time.
10 - Spotlight analysis and potential
More of the same.
11 - File types revisited
File types need improvement, lots of talk
on this page but it mostly seems unrealised in Tiger. Something for
the future.
12 - Metadata summary
 Waffle.
13 - Quartz
14 - Quartz 2D Extreme
15 - Core Image
Three pages about deep graphics stuff.
Probably means we'll see some nice apps in 6 months to a year. Didn't
notice what types of gfx cards would support it etc.
16 - Video in Tiger
   More of the same.
17 - Dashboard
Probably the most interesting part from
the group's point of view. Tiny apps that we can share online, easy
for a coder to knock-up and simple for a user to install.
18 - The Finder (not really) revisited
  Waffle. It's better.
19 - Performance
Takes a long time to do the
post-ugprade setup, but then Tiger will be faster than Panther on the
same machine, allegedly. Wonder what it'll think of my 400mhz laptop
:)
20 - Grab bag
Lots of bits. Highlights are Automator
which everybody seems to like but will probably be relatively unused
by the sounds of it. Safari does RSS. iChat/Mail are changed.
21 - Conclusion
   Waffle.

Conclusion for me is:

I'll see Tiger whenever I order another Mac Mini. I'm still an Apple
fan, but I'm tired of the hype marketing and post-hype
dissatisfaction, so for my primary machine I'll be unswitching.

I first switched 4 years ago in the same month that Apple released OS
X by getting a Titanium Powerbook G4. It's served me well, drained 2
batteries of their life and is still good enough to keep up if I dared
serve it another battery.

The problem is that Linux has caught up with respect to laptops. I
installed it the other night on a cheap Dell laptop and the only
issues I hit were making the wireless card work (download one file and
put in a directory to fix) and that it doesn't handle one of the three
power-management sleeping options.

Big advantages for Linux over OS X:

* Java. Not a biggy for the group, but a lot of Java developers
switched in 2001/2002, and there's now a movement to switch away
again. Apple hasn't been able to support us, we haven't written Java
apps for OS X in droves and Apple's customer service style has been a
shock (we were used to knowing what was going on).

* Keyboard support. OS X seems unusable without a mouse. Probably
possible as I assume disabled/accessibility laws require an OS to work
without a mouse, but I've never found it easy to do something as
simple as restart the machine without a mouse (press power-button,
then struggle to move the highlight from Shutdown to Restart).

* Not an advantage, but a complaint. Safari is still a weak browser
for JavaScript.

* Choice. So many more options to choose from in the Linux world. It
does mean exploring, which puts many off, but if you choose to explore
it is often very enjoyable.

* Price. The Apple development community seem to love trying to sell a
relatively basic applications for 30 dollars. Some are gems
(OmniGraffle), but others are just because people have the shareware
attitude.

Provided I'm happy using my Dell dual-boot XP/Linux laptop, I'll
probably hunt down a laptop for

MacGroup: Need help with Apple in a PC world

2005-02-08 Thread Frank Hammitt
Three years ago I switched form Dell to a Ti PowerBook G4 667MHz, 512M RAM
and have been pleased. There have been some gaps in total satisfaction
because I could not find a Mac equivalent to some of the Windows based
software I was using, specifically: ACT! (a contact manager database); MS
Project; Visio; Synchronization with a handheld Compaq IPAQ; plus several
proprietary applications.

I gave in to MS Office for Mac v.X to maintain some viability with my
clients (all use Windows) and tried Virtual PC (VPC) 6.1 which runs
embarrassingly slow, virtually unusable in front of clients.

Some of you must face the same issue, how do you work around the issue?
Also, what Apple laptop configuration in terms of CPU speed and RAM will I
need to run VPC 6.1 adequately? VPC 7.0 is getting lukewarm reviews. I
travel a great deal and lighter is better so I am considering the new 1.5MHZ
12? PB with 1G RAM. Does anyone know what that will emulate in Windows?

Any help is appreciated, I feel myself being pulled to the dark side of the
(computer) force.

Assuming you have MS PowerPoint, open the application, than using the file
menu open the .PPS file. You should be able to access the specific slides.

The key point is to open .PPT first, then access your .PPS file and then the
image in the file.
Certainly Think Free Office and Apple Works can do similar maneuverings to
get your image.

MacGroup: IE/plug-in problem

2004-10-11 Thread Frank Hammitt
Have you had a crash recently that required a hard reset to restart your
computer? If so you may need to reset the date and time. The security system
?sees? your computer date as too far away from real time and won?t let you
on their websites. I have had occasion to blame IE for various browsing
problems but ultimately found the date and time incorrect on my own machine.

Hope this helps.

Definitely look at Epson?s support page and look for an OS X driver. I lost

Once it was installed the scanner launches directly out of the dock for most

MacGroup: network stuttering...

2004-07-12 Thread Frank Hammitt
Bill,

I agree, this slow download/connection situation has only been evident
recently. Two weeks ago I would have no complaints. Funny thing though, the
Speed Test gave me the same result two weeks ago as I got today. If I
believed in a conspiracy, or at least a collusion, I would think the
broadband supplier can sense when a speed test is conduct and opens the pipe
for the next few minutes.

Yes I do use the hands-free phone feature.

MacGroup: network stuttering...

2004-07-12 Thread Frank Hammitt
My own experience is similar to yours. Very slow downloads (similar to a
dial-up connection) on both small and larger files. A speed test indicated a
reasonable 1.8 to 2.3 MBPS (I can?t see how that it is accurate) but in
reality, all web pages are loading slowly. I feel something is afoot with
the the broadband supplier. I had a better connection in a north central
Mexico Hampton Inn last week.

An inquiry call to Insight Broadband yielded a 26 minute wait that
terminated in me hanging up before they responded. At least I didn?t have to
listen to the inane babbling of Bob Sokoler (sp) and Terry Minor encouraging
me to sign up for more services.

How are those of you on DSL faring? I am considering a switch.

MacGroup: FW: Contact Database Management on Mac

2004-06-02 Thread Frank Hammitt
I use Entourage as a contact manager. As a former ACT! user I find Entourage
less robust and complete but suitable as a repository for contact
information, calendar, journals, reminders and task lists. It is very
similar to MS Outlook. I don?t recommend it if you are in need of a thorough
CRM.

Now Up to Date and Now Contact has a downloadable trial version. It seemed
better than Entourage and Outlook but not as good as ACT! But it is worth a
try. Just do a Google search for Up to Date and Now Contact.

I really miss ACT! and E-Grabber and wish they would create an OSX version.

MacGroup: Spell Checker for Outlook Express...

2004-05-05 Thread Frank Hammitt
I could not find proof on the Apple web site but I have to believe
AppleWorks has spell check.

MSWord X (for Mac) is $229 for new purchase, $109 for upgrade and is a word
processor only vs. AppleWorks $79 a full suite of productivity tools.

You do the math, but please confirm they contain spell check.

As an alternative you might consider Think Free Office, another Mac Office
suite only $49.

MacGroup: OS 10.2.8 Erratic Bev...Continued

2004-01-04 Thread Frank Hammitt
Carlos,

I do not know the specifics of your iBook but on my PowerBook running OSX
10.1.5 there is a small recessed button with a triangle next to it on the
back between the S-Video out and the telephone line in connections. Your
manual will identify the proper location for your iBook.

When my machine locks up and will not recover through the normal means like
?Quit? or ?Force Quit?, I have to push this button and the machine does a
complete reset. I never loose any saved data but the machine time and
calendar revert back to some pre-assigned period.

Just click on your time in the tool bar and correct to the proper settings
and apply the changes.

Another symptom of the time shift occurs when you cannot access web sites
your were previously able to access. Also any e-mail you send will arrive at
your recipient?s mail box with the date established your computer clock.
This could place it a the bottom of some very long lists and probably get no
attention.

Good luck.

MacGroup: Saving E-Mail

2003-11-21 Thread Frank Hammitt
In Entourage & Outlook you can just drag (or save-as) an e-mail to any
folder or to your desktop. The e-mail remains in the ?new? location and you
can access it even if you delete the original. For example, I have a folder
for each client and the folder contains word processing documents,
spreadsheets, photo?s, e-mails, etc. I am using a POP3 e-mail account and do
not know if this works in web based e-mail or other accounts such as IMAP.

Try one or two unimportant e-mails as a test.

Of course you can always create folders in the e-mail application and save
the e-mails you want to archive there.

Good luck

MacGroup: Entourage Email Address Question

2003-11-07 Thread Frank Hammitt
I noticed the same thing and attempted to find a cure. Here is my non-expert
discovery.

Entourage (and perhaps other e-mail programs) ?remembers? the e-mail address
of all e-mails senders that sent you and e-mail including e-mails you never
opened, junk mail and spam. Entourage thinks you might want to use them.
Try clicking on ?new message? and just enter the letter ?a? in the To box
and wait a moment. You will see a list of e-mail addresses beginning with
?a?. Some of them are legitimate from your address book and some you may not
recognize. Try enter ?b? and waiting a moment. Again, you may see strange
e-mail addresses. If you do not see unfamiliar e-mail address keep trying
the letters of the alphabet. Soon you will discover unwanted e-mail
addresses. Also try combinations like ?bro? and the like. You will likely
find unfamiliar e-mail addresses co-mingled with e-mail addresses from your
address book.

Another test is to locate an e-mail you deleted with out opening and enter
the first few letters of that address into your new message To box. The
complete e-mail address of the offending sender will appear in the selection
menu.

I have been mildly disconcerted by the intrusion but have seen no ill
effects.

Microsoft told me the program has a finite number of locations for these
addresses so as new addresses are stored older inactive addresses drop out
of the stack. Also, MS said there is no way to turn off the process. If you
or someone from our Mac users group finds a way to stop Entourage from
storing non-address book e-mail addresses automatically, please share the
knowledge.

MacGroup: Re: Entourage question

2003-09-03 Thread Frank Hammitt
Click on Entourage in the tool bar menu, select Main & News Preferences,
select the Reply & Forward tab, under Mail Attribution check the box by the
text line Place insertion point before quoted text.
This should work, at least it appears that way while I am responding to your
question. The proof will be how it looks when you receive my e-mail.

All the best.

John,

If you have had to perform any resets (pushing the little button on the back
or side of the computer) verify the computer is set for the correct date,

MacGroup: Contact Information Management

2003-04-04 Thread Frank Hammitt
Thanks, Ward, for suggesting I start a new subject thread, sorry for the
confusion.

Currently I have several different address books from old applications such
as five separate Act! 4.0 (for PC) databases (that I access through Virtual
PC), two Palm address books, three excel spreadsheets and an old Outlook ?98
address book. Collectively these total about 3800 names and each of these
has some redundancy both within a given database and between the databases.

Ultimately I want to move most of these names into Entourage and use it as
my primary PIM and to synchronize with my Palm IIIx. Before importing into
Entourage, I was trying to separately clean-up each database, standardize
the format (some databases use the format title, first name, last name all
in one line and others separate each of these labels), add categories (such
as friends, business, family, etc.).

I know I can manage the data in Entourage but my existing, active address
book is Entourage and I don?t want to co-mingle the ?old? data with the
existing 837 names before correcting the ?old? data. Therefore:
1. Will Entourage allow me to create two data bases, one to use day-to-day
and one to clean-up before merging? If so, then how can I create another
Entourage data base? I could not find it in the help menu.
2. If the answer to #1 is no, does anyone know of a simple, inexpensive PIM
that will do what I want?
3. Is there another solution altogether? I am open to any suggestions.

Thanks,
Frank

contact information such as names, addresses, telephone numbers, etc. I seem
to remember a reference to such and application in one of the earlier
