Regardless,
There doesn't seem to be feature changes big enough to warrant me upgrading 
from my current Nano. If anything, I'm looking forward to upgrading to an 
iPod touch. Hard to say though as I could see a version of the touch or 
iPhone coming out soon enough with a duo core processor. Should I wait???

 Just went to take a peak at the new iPod line on the UK Apple site,
 and found this on the Nano page that got me curious:

 "It all begins with iTunes and its seamless integration with iPod
 nano. First, iTunes reads your song information, then uses the
 VoiceOver Kit to generate the announcements for the songs, artists and
 playlists. Just sync your iPod nano to your computer and it really
 speaks to you."

 It got me wondering, are we looking at actual TTs on the Nano here or
 not? There's nothing in the promotional blurb to suggest to me that
 VO is doing much new in this revision, but I'd love to be corrected.

 Not meant in a negative way at all, I appreciate the awesomeness of VO
 coming to the touch, just trying to make an educated decision on a
 budget.

sharing itunes on twitter and facebook?

is this new feature in itunes nine accessible? I was talking to  
someone tonight who uses a pc with itunes, and they were playing with  
the store and jaws was speaking links to share findings on the store  
on twitter and facebook. I didn't see this option on the mac side, but  
I assume it's there somewhere? on the pc version it was on the main  
store page with the albums, but is it somewhere else on the mac  
version? or do we not have access to it?it just looks like a cool  
feature.

It's located in the store itself so interact with the html area for the 
store and you will find it.

Just take a look around things are in different places compared to iTunes 
8.21.

With an iPod, on the Summary tab there is a Manually Manage Music  
check box. If you uncheck it, you have options for syncing with your  
itunes library. Maybe the iPhone works the same way.

Hi there,

I tried this now, and by focusing on the image without interacting,  
route the mouse to the VO cursor and VO-shift-space the image, I got  
the preview played. ONly drawback currently is that you need to  
remember to route the mouse each time, since we currently is using the  
ignore setting for mouse tracking.

Itunes cannot find my files after update

Hi listers,
After I installed Itunes 9, I have been experiencing odd behavior.  
When I try to play certain songs in my library, I get the following  
message. Itunes was unable to play the file because it cannot be  
located. Would you like to locate it? If I click yes, I am then taken  
to my file browser.
The funny thing is, when I search for the files in spotlight, they  
come up immediately. What is going on here? Furthermore, why did this  
happen to some files, and not others? Most importantly, how can I get  
my files back into Itunes without manually having to find each one it  
says it can't find? That would take eons given the size of my music  
collection.

weird question re syncing aiphone

Hi all,

When I first synced my iphone with my Mac, I did not tell it to erase  
the sync with my Windows computer and sync with the Mac.  Now I would  
like it to do that.  Is there any way to accomplish this other than  
reconnecting my iphone to my PC, restoring it to defaults, and then  
synciong with the Mac?

Hi,

REcently, pressing enter or play will preview the song. The image is  
just to tell you there is only a preview available until you have paid  
for the song YaY!
It's only rock & roll you know. ;-)

Sorry for the prelific posts!
Just wanted to give a quick update for anybody who'd read the previous
messages and been disheartened.  According to accessibil...@apple.com
we're actually looking at the VoiceOver Kit generating and syncing
song artist and titles as on the previous Nano and the current
Shuffles, but TTS for spoken menues.

That's good news peeps, thought I'd pass it along!

another itunes nine bug, they seem to have broken the ability to  
preview songs in the store!! there's an image there if you look down  
the store page, it's before each song and it says preview, but if you  
VO space on it or interact with it and then VO space or press enter,  
nothing seems to work to activate those! so I'm not sure how you'd go  
about previewing something!! anyone else noticing this?

Just went to take a peak at the new iPod line on the UK Apple site,
and found this on the Nano page that got me curious:

"It all begins with iTunes and its seamless integration with iPod
nano. First, iTunes reads your song information, then uses the
VoiceOver Kit to generate the announcements for the songs, artists and
playlists. Just sync your iPod nano to your computer and it really
speaks to you."

It got me wondering, are we looking at actual TTs on the Nano here or
not?  There's nothing in the promotional blurb to suggest to me that
VO is doing much new in this revision, but I'd love to be corrected.

Not meant in a negative way at all, I appreciate the awesomeness of VO
coming to the touch, just trying to make an educated decision on a
budget.

Hi Mike,

To find your iWeb file, go to your Home folder with command-shift-H,  
go into the LIbrary folder, inside the Application Support folder and  
find the iWeb folder there. There should be a file called Domain, and  
this file contains all your saved iWeb data.

If you by some reason would like to have your Domain file stored some  
other place, do the following:
•Make sure iWEb is not running
•Copy the Domain file from the default location described above, and  
paste it to the new location.
•Do not rename the Domain file - if you need to have more than one  
Domain file, place them in separate folders and name the folders  
instead.
•In Finder, press command-O when VO is focused on the Domain file you  
would like to have active. iWeb will launch from this location, and  
always do so until you press command-O on another Domain file.
•Delete the Domain file located on the default location, since this  
file will not be used anymore.

The simplest comparrison to make as a new switcher is to think of it
as a bios update, efi is pretty much the mac's equivillent.
Downloading them usually means good news.  Just be sure to take care
to read the update instructions that come up before it restarts,
because they usually require a boot up in a slightly different way to
normal.  On my mbp, you have to hold down the power button
continuously until the poor thing makes a beep that's louder and
longer than I imagined, but it might be a different procedure on a
mini.  If you're really lucky, you might be spared the beep.

Have at it, and give us a shout if anything irks you.

itunes busy when skipping through songs?

hey guys

noticed a little thing with iTunes nine. when I try to skip quickly  
through my library, iTunes seems to be busy for a few seconds before  
skipping through to the next song. it's not a huge deal, but kind of  
annoying when skipping through songs! anyone else notice this?

Is the wireless turned on?

I assume you have a relatively new mac that supports 802.11N? Older   
macs with 802.11G  or 802.11B  can not see 802.11A  networks.
So that might also be a problem for you.

and I have not changed any settings that my ISP sent me. I do have Snow 
Leopard, but I don't want to upgrade yet.

Excellent; I'll let you know when I've worked on the accessibility
issues in JamochaMUD.  According to the documentation I've found Java
has a lot of built-in accessibility features so it may be relatively
trivial to get things set-up (everything from tool-tips and keyboard
navigation to binding labels to text fields).

It will probably be more of a wait for me to find time to make the
changes than to do the actual work!

Connecting with Mac to wireless network

[James & Nash]

Hi folks,

I have a slight problem. I can connect to my wireless network on my Windows 
machine and my MacBook can locate other networks but it cannot locate or 
connect to my own wireless network. It does connect when via the Ethernet 
cable connecting directly to my Router/moden. Can anyone please advise?

FTP Server was RE: ftpclients on the mac?

If they'd make their server available on the Mac, I'd be very happy. Anyone 
know of a good FTP server with a comparable feature set of FileZilla Server? 
I'd prefer it to be free, but if it's cheap that's fine too.

mobile me account

[Yuma Antoine Decaux]

Hi all,

I've been trying to register for the free trial to mobile me, and went  
to fill in my billing info, but when i press on the unlabelled button,  
i keep getting back to the same page. I've noticed thatthere is no  
radio button or anything to say that i agree to terms of service,  
unless that unlabelled button is the i agree button, but it still  
won't route me to the next step of the registration.

Has anyone encountered this problem? Does one need sighted assistance  
to go through the process?

Any help or pointer would be greatly appreciated

I'll post a longer answer about copying for Ringtones later, but as a  
quick answer to your question, the difference in your being able to  
play the Desktop version vs. the version in iTunes may be that in  
iTunes the setting of you volume slider was checked.  If it was  
something weird, like Full volume on the slider being registered as 0  
on the switch, things could have behaved the way you described.   
iTunes actually plays and encodes music through QuickTime, which is  
why Windows users have to download QuickTime as well as iTunes.  The  
QuickTime interface offers more playing and control options, but  
doesn't support DRM music or Audible books.  If the Desktop version  
triggered QuickTime's player, that could be another reason that the  
switch setting in iTunes was ignored.

 You can try the following: if you've created a copied file in  
 iTunes
 with "Create AAC Version" and have that track highlighted in iTunes

tell for it...

purchased book from itunes

Hi everyone,

I can't find the book i purchasedfrom itunes in the sources table. And  
there is no checkbox in the prefs. Even on the new itunes i can't find  
it.

I really like the new menu on the itunes store though :)

Oh, before i digressed: does anyone know where i can find book files?

Wondering about convertion of Aiff files to compressed files for ipod

[Jesper Holten]

Hi everybody.
With the release of Ipod touch, I now have to face the issue of converting 
my itunes library to something that is handled nicely on the Ipod. My itunes 
Library  files are uncompressed Aiff files, and I will have to convert that 
into e.g. Aac compressed audio that plays on the ipod. Is that done 
automaticly when syncing  the ipod with my Imac or do I have to do something 
to ease the process?

M twice, then VO right arrow until you hear the airport menu; Down  
arrow at that point to hear a list of all the wireless networks your  
Mac sees; there's a "join other networks," option if you know the FSID  
of the network you want and it's not being broadcast.  That's  
simpler. :)

Well, it's nice to know that I'm not the only one who's experienced such
weirdness. :)  I'm just curious though, do you happen to know why the volume
being muted would impact playing the version that had been imported, but not
the version on my desktop that hadn't?

Hi Donna,

Glad this worked, I was just about to tell you to check the volume  
slider setting in iTunes.  This happened once to me.  There's a  
separate volume control for iTunes, and if you VO-Right arrow past the  
LCD section you'll get the buttons for "Mute", "Slider", and "Full  
Volume".  If you interact with the slider you can use your arrow keys  
to set the exact volume level.

The weirdest problem I encountered with iTunes volume was once, when a  
track sounded muted, and I went to the volume slider to find it was at  
100 per cent (full volume).  But when I backed off a little bit, the  
sound came back.  Go figure.

When I came back to write my last message, I closed out itunes.  I just went
back over to the mac and reopened it to double-check that the copy to Itunes
library option had remained checked.  When I reopened Itunes, it told me
that the volume was turned all the way down.  I have *no idea how this
happened, and I would never have figured it out, since I had no problem
playing the copy on my desktop.  UUU8UGHG!

So, the volume's back up, and now the ringtone is playing just fine!

Hi Esther,

The bit rate is the same as your sample, 256 KBPS, and the length of the
ringtone is 32 seconds.  I tried to copy all the info, but didn't have
options to select and copy in the info table.

When I press space, it says it's playing, but there's no sound.  Also, I can
play the file with no problem if I play the copy that's on my desktop.

Recording capabilities of the new iPod Nanos and Touches

Hi all,

These iPod releases come at an interesting time for me, as my field
recorder has popped it's cloggs and I'm due a new toy.  So far I'm not
having much luck turning up specifics of the new recording
functionality, but I'm wondering whether this new line of iPods might
be a quick and dirty fix to get the job done.

I guess I need to know:
Is the in built mic stereo or mono? If mono, any way of hooking up an
external mic?
Can the user set recording levels?
Any sort of AGC or limiter?
What format do these little beauties record down too?

Just so you understand, I'm not looking to capture every subtle nuance
of a woodland glade on a crisp autumn morning with this thing.  It's
basically got to stand up to the abuse of a 5 peace alt rock band a
few times a week, and get the ocasional dirty bootleg of a session or
gig is all.

If you find any info to shed light on the above, please post it up.

Hi Anna,

Good thought about moving this to the iTunes Music folder before  
adding it.  I forgot that Donna may have her preferences set so that  
"Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to Library" is  
unchecked on the Advanced pane of the iTunes preferences menu.  Of  
course, iTunes will expect the tracks to be in the iTunes library  
location.

Hi,

I'm sorry my instructions were not clear.  I believe there are a few  
ways you can accomplish this task.  Before the upgrade it was much  
easier to just focus on the message headers, interact with it then  
move to the senders address and press vo + spacebar because the  
sender's name/e-mail address was a menu button which opened a few  
options such as copy or reply to sender.  Now it does not seem as  
simple to me.


So, here is one way I have been able to accomplish replying to the  
sender directly instead of the entire list.

1.  Use the vo + arrow keys to get to the message header.  I believe  
you will hear voiceover say something like message header.
2.  press vo + shift + down arrow to interact with message headers.
3.  Press vo + right arrow once, you should hear voiceover say "from".
4.  Press vo + enter.  This will allow you to highlight.
5.  Press vo + right arrow once.  You should hear voiceover announce  
the sender's name/e-mail address.
6.  Press vo + return to turn highlighting off.  You should hear voice  
over announce what is highlighted.
7.  Press vo + shift + M.  This should bring up a context menu.
8.  Arrow up and down through the options.  You can copy address or I  
often use reply to sender which will open up a new message with the  
sender's address already entered in the "to" field and the curser  
should be in the message area where you can type your message.  This e- 
mail should behave as any other message you reply to.  I also believe  
you can choose an option to send a new message to the sender which  
will open up a new message with the address already entered in the  
"to" field.
9.  Press vo + spacebar to select the option you want from the context  
menu.

One other thing that can work depending on how the e-mail list serve  
is set up is to press command shift r to reply to all.  Then you can  
go up to the message header, interact with it and delete the address  
of the e-mail group.  However, this does not seem to be working for me  
for the macvisionaries list.  This has worked for me in the past with  
other groups but I have not tried this since the upgrade to SL.  I  
think it depends on how the e-mail group list serve is set up.

One other thing which I have not tried is to use command + shift + Y.   
This is to add the sender's address to your address book.  I'm just  
not sure if it would add the group's e-mail address or the actual  
sender's address.  You could try this command plus shift plus y and  
then open a new message to compose and then in the "to" field you can  
just try typing their name or the first few letters of their address.

Hi Donna,

How odd that double-clicking didn't open the file by default into  
iTunes. And your track should play when you select it and press  
Return. OK, a few thoughts:

1. If you select the track in the ringtones playlist, can you check  
that the time is under 40 seconds?  Look in the songs table, and VO- 
Right arrow past the name to the total time.
2. Can you do a Get Info (Command-I) on the track and select the  
Summary tab instead of the Options tab?  It will probably come up with  
your focus on the Summary tab and with this selected, but if not,  
select this tab with VO-Space.   VO-Right arrow into this pane past  
the title.  You should hear a report of the Kind of file, for instance:
  Kind: Ringtone, Size: 637.3 KB, Bit Rate: 256 kbps (VBR), Sample  
Rate: 44.100 kHz, Date Modified: 9/7/09 08:52, Play Count: 2, Last  
Played: 9/7/09 09:10  unknown

I used VO-Shift-C to copy this group and paste it in.  I'm curious  
about whether your bit rate setting is at some value that the Ringtone  
won't recognize.  Can you check this information?  (This is the

Cut, copy, and paste comes to iPod touch. To bring up cut, copy, and  
paste options, use the rotor and choose Edit. Flick up or down to  
choose between the Select and Select All functions, then double tap.  
If you choose Select, the word closest to the insertion point is  
selected when you double tap. Pinch to increase or decrease the  
selection. If you choose Select All, the entire text is selected. When  
text is selected, cut, copy, and paste options appear on the screen.  
If you want to undo something, just give iPod touch a shake. You can  
also flick left or right to choose the undo action, then double tap.

Hi Donna,

Once you rename the extension, try moving the file from your desktop  
to your iTunes folder. Then open it in itunes by pressing Control-O.

Hi Esther,

Well, double-clicking on the file didn't do anything.  So I tried pressing
Command-O with the file on my desktop selected--and yes, renamed with the
M4R extension.  That did cause it to be imported into itunes, at least I can
see it in the ringtones playlist.  But, when I try to play it, it won't
play.  Is that normal?

It is accessible but won't work on any system running later that OS  
10.4.
As I have heard from HumanWare, there were not enough sales of the  
initial Mac version to warrant making a new version compatible with  
Leopard.

with actions that were created by your pc or mac

You can try the following: if you've created a copied file in iTunes  
with "Create AAC Version" and have that track highlighted in iTunes  
use the "Command-R" shortcut that shows the location of the file in  
Finder to bring up a Finder window with your selected track  
highlighted.  Then, from that Finder window, copy the track with  
Command-C and paste it to the Desktop.  You should even be able to  
press the shortcut for navigating to the Desktop, "Command-Shift-D",  
just after you copy with Command-C, and then paste with Command-V.  If  
you have difficulty pasting, switch to icon view with Command-1 and  
try your paste again.

copying from itunes

Hi all,

I'm attempting to follow Simon's instructions for creating ringtones.  But I
am unable to copy anything out of my itunes songs table, not the new file
I've created and not any other files either.  This seems to be new behavior
with Snow Leopard?  At least, it never happened to me before.  The copy
option shows up in the menu as valid, I've tried pressing Command C, and
also activating it through the menu.  But when I go to paste it onto my
desktop, the paste command shows up as dimmed.  Anyone know what could be
happening?

  If software update does the update it should apply to all accounts. If the 
account has insufficient privileges to complete the update it should either 
fail and tell you or ask for the admin account to authenticate. While you may 
have multiple accounts, they share the same core applications and OS 
components. So an update to iTunes or a security patch to Safari will be 
noticed by all users.

You have one processor chip with two processor cores inside. I think 
it's pretty much the functional equivalent of having two distinct 
processors but it shares packaging and maybe some circuitry. For all 
intents and purposes you have two processors. While not everything takes 
advantage of having more than one CPU, it does make a big difference. 
Your main app can use one CPU while the OS and anything else running can 
use the other. Once you get beyond two processors it gets more difficult 
to really keep them all loaded with work. This is why Apple introduced 
Grand Central in Snow Leopard which allows developers to break up tasks 
into little work units that grand schedule will queue and distribute to 
as many processors as you have. If you can buy 8-processor machines 
today, what will we have in three years? It's good they are laying the 
groundwork for this now.

JAWS can write to any place on your system with write privileges.

I didn't notice any replies to your email so I'll take a crack at it.

If software update does the update it should apply to all accounts. If 
the account has insufficient privileges to complete the update it should 
either fail and tell you or ask for the admin account to authenticate. 
While you may have multiple accounts, they share the same core 
applications and OS components. So an update to iTunes or a security 
patch to Safari will be noticed by all users.

You might use a program like IP Scanner,

I'm not sure if this will work; it will only work if the FSID is being  
broadcast by the network.  Course, if you're mostly looking for free  
WIFI, it might just do the trick.

Press Down Arrow to go into that menu. One of the options should be  
Turn Airport On. Press Return. At that point, the Mac will search for  
networks and let you try to connect with what it finds.

Hi Jessi,

If you focus on the header, interact with it and focus on the from  
address, and press VO-shift-space, you will hear "menu" and can arrow  
down to copy the address etc. etc. Just remember to route the mouse to  
your VO cursor with VO-command-F5 before you click, since I suppose  
you have set mouse cursor to ignore VO cursor to avoid the sub menu  
issue.

I tested this with a message from you now, and it works just fine in SL.

directory utility & ldap authentication

I've been trying unsuccessfully to get the Macs in my department to 
authenticate versus our ldap database. It works with ldap but not ldaps. I 
upgraded one machine to snowleopard hoping it would work better. But now I 
can't get into the ldap configuration at all.

On google I've seen messages that say you now need to configure ldap 
authentication via the System Preferences -> Accounts utility. But I cannot 
find it in there. Any hints?
