Re: Snow Leopard and Itunes 9

2009-09-13 Thread Esther

Hello James,

The songs table is now inside the HTML area of iTunes. What I do now
is, once I am in the HTML area, I bring up item chooser menu (VO-I)
and look for "heading level 2 Songs". Then I VO-Right arrow to the
name, time, artist, etc. fields. If you do not have your Mouse cursor
following your VoiceOver cursor you will have to route it with VO-
Command-F5 when you want to preview the song and click with VO-Shift-
Space. I also use this method of clicking on the "Buy" field to make
my purchase.

HTH. Maybe someone else can make suggestions (I'm not upgraded to
Snow Leopard yet, but am using iTunes 9).

Cheers,

Esther

Snow Leopard and Itunes 9

2009-09-13 Thread James Fettgather

Hi to the list.

I am really confused about how to purchase a song using Itunes 9.
I type a title into the search field, no problem.

Hit Enter.

I can find the HTML portion of the Itunes store without difficulty
containing all of the albums with the particular song, but the songs
table listing individual songs is simply missing, pressing VO right
arrow simply is showing no song table at all.

Any hints about where the heck is the songs table would sure be
helpful, and thanks a lot.

Hi Simon,

Clicking the physical mouse while the mouse is focused on the email
address in the header opens the menu where you can reply to sender,
etc. Just be sure you either have the mouse set to follow the VO
cursor or that you press VO-Command-F5 to get it to the right place.

Best,
Anna

Re: podcasts on your iPod?

2009-09-13 Thread Woody Anna Dresner

Hi,

When you connect your iPod, choose Podcasts in the Settings area.
Press VO-Right Arrow until you reach a pop-up menu called Sync, and
choose All Unplayed. That way, when you finish playing a podcast, it
will be deleted the next time you sync your iPOd with your computer.
The next control or controls, depending which version of iTunes you
have, let you choose between syncing all podcasts or selected
podcasts. If you choose Selected Podcasts, you then come to a table
where all your podcasts are listed. Check the ones you want to sync
and uncheck the rest. Then VO-Right Arrow to Apply, and all should
work as you want.

Best,
Anna

Re: I got back a tonne of space

2009-09-13 Thread Esther

Hi erik,

Yes, one of the advertised features of Snow Leopard was an effort to
make the same apps run in less space, and also to reduce the files
that got loaded by default. So no, it wasn't a question of Leopard
starting out bloated, Apple tried to both reduce the size of standard
applications and make the suite of applications run in a tighter
configuration in Snow Leopard.

Here's a quote from a very early article (February) in Wired entitled
"Leaked Snow Leopard Screenshots Reveal Slimmer, Faster Mac OS X":

Apple’s suite of stock applications seem to have also gone on a strict
diet and exercise regime, with nearly all the included apps radically
reduced in size. For example, iChat in Leopard weighs in at 114MB
while the Snow Leopard version drops to 22 MB, Dashboard goes from 184
KB to 111 KB and Mail goes from 289 MB to 36 MB. Overall Snow
Leopard’s application appear to save around a gig of drive space
compared to Leopard.

However, could it be that you still had copies of some of your music
files stored in iTunes? I don't think that the new OS accounts for
all the difference. Some of this may be that certain files won't be
installed automatically by the base installation. For example, I
think you may to check that QuickTime gets installed. Also, people
who got the iLife '08 or iLife '09 suite had a lot of extras files
added in, like Garage Band loops and sound effects. As a followup to
the ringtones discussion, I noted that there were a lot of sound
effect files in the:
/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/
folder under two directories: "Apple Loops for Garageband" and "iLife
Sound Effects". The iLife Sound Effects are particularly nice for
making ringtones, and under the "Work - Home" folder there were
numerous sound of telephones ringing, wrong number messages, fax
tones, etc. These are .caf (core audio files), so they can't be used
directly for ringtones by converting in iTunes -- they're basically
like AIFF files but extended so that they aren't subject to the same 4
GB size limit and number of tracks that AIFF has -- but they can be
opened in Amadeus Pro and converted just by selecting the track
(Command-A) and going to the File menu on the Amadeus menu bar (VO-M;
Press "F" and arrow down) and pressing "E" to go to "Export as iPhone
Rightone…" then pressing return. Accepting all defaults will generate
a Ringtone soundclip and add it to your iTunes Ringtones directory.

These sound files also appear to be left out of the Snow Leopard
install, since someone reported not being able to find them after
doing a clean install to Snow Leopard.

Cheers,

Esther

Question on Mail Settings on the Mac

2009-09-13 Thread Dave McLean
Hello, Another question from a Mac newbie:
Where in the mail menus is the setting to delete messages from the pop server
after they are downloaded?
I read a bunch of messages with my Mac, shut it down, and later turned on my
Windows machine, and retrieved my mail only to get all the same messages I had
just read on the Mac.

Thanks for any help.

Re: braille display works great and a question

2009-09-13 Thread erik burggraaf

Hi, braille input just works here on my braille connect.

I am having only two problems so far. Pne is that my enter and
backspace don't function as expected, and the other is that I'm in 8
dot computer braille and I haven't figured out how to switch to grade
two. It's crazy because all the punctuation marks are different in
computer braille and i don't know what most of them are.

About airfoil on mac.

2009-09-13 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen

Hi all.

Has anybody tried airfoil for mac.

To me it seems as if it is not fully accessible with voiceover. But I
am not sure. The main problem is maybe that there is some comands, I
do not know.

If anybody else has any experiences with airfoil, I would be glad to
hear from you.

I get the following message:
Airfoil could not begin transmitting. Be sure to select an audio
source in the source menu before transmitting with airfoil. I can not
find the source menu.

 I am using snowleopard.

Best regards Annie.

Command-Option-F in iTunes (burning and finding total time) and in Safari (searching) [was Re: awesome new keyboard command in itunes 9]

2009-09-13 Thread Esther

Hi Scott,

Command-Option-F is, indeed, a useful command, but it's actually one
of the first commands I was ever able to use in iTunes, even before it
became fully accessible, and has worked in every version of iTunes
that I've used. In fact, it was mentioned as part of a reply to one
of your questions last year (a follow-up to the main question). It's
a quick way to get to the "Burn Disc" button if you are burning a
playlist to CD or DVD; use Command-Option-F to move to the search
field and then VO-Down arrow to the "Burn Disc" button and press it
(VO-Space). Of course, now we can also issue the burn command from
the context menu of the playlist in the sources table with VO-Shift-M,
but at the time you either had to find this button or find the command
under the File menu of the iTunes menu bar, which you can also still
do. I'll excerpt bits from the archived discussion post at:

http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss%40macvisionaries.com/msg36685.html

I'll add some new comments about this command and iTunes 9 at the end
of the excerpted discussion:

> On Jun 20, 2008, Scott Rutkowski wrote:
>
>> HI all.
>>
>> can anyone who uses iTunes tell me if you make a playlist in iTunes,
>> is there a way of finding out the total time of the playlist itself?
>> I've made a playlist and am trying to find out the total time so I
>> can burn it to an audio cd.
>> Any info would be great.
>>
>> Thanks.

Cara responded:

>
> Hi Scott, Good mornin'!Use the item chooser to locate
> the burn disc button and then VO left arrow once. You'll see the
> total number of songs, the total time, and the total size.
>
> HTH

and I wrote:

Hi Cara and Scott,

Another way to get to the burn button without having to use
the item chooser is to VO-down arrow from the search text
field. I like doing it that way because I can either tab to the
search text field or go to it directly with Command-Option-F.

So, Cara's instructions could be redone by replacing the
step about finding the burn button with the VO-down arrow
from the search text field and the VO-left arrow from there.

Incidentally, I check the total time and space even when I'm
not on a playlist, so there isn't always a "burn button" -- on
a music library or for podcasts this action of VO-down from
the search text field would take me to the "Browse" button,
and I could still VO-left to the summary infomation. This
is a good way to find out when your podcasts library is
getting really large!

I didn't give these directions, because the button you get
(browse, burn etc.) when you VO-down from the search
text field changes depending on what's in your source
list selection, and that seemed too confusing to summarize,
but this is faster -- even faster if you skip item chooser.

Cheers,

Esther

I'll first note that the fast way to check total time, number of
items, of disk space in a playlist is simply to VO-Down arrow from the
songs table and you'll hear a summary, for example:

  20 audiobooks, 4:22:08:12 total time, 1.70 GB

If you click on the field, you can change between more or less
detailed time reporting formats, for instance:

  20 audiobooks, 4.9 days, 1.70 GB

This can be useful even if you're not burning tracks to CD or DVD, but
just trying to design playlists or thinking about how much space the
music you plan to transfer to your iPod will take up.

Secondly, when I inserted a blank CD to check that these instructions
still worked for iTunes 9 something odd happened: my file browser
behavior reverted to the format that I used for iTunes 8, which I
actually prefer. Instead of just showing an "Artist column", I
recovered the three columns for "Genre", "Artist", and "Album". I
didn't recover the nice tabbing behavior of iTunes 8 between sources
table, search field, and songs table, but I still think this is an
improvement. I'm still using Leopard, if it makes a difference, so I
haven't been having the same other issues navigating.

Final comments about Command-Option-F in another context: I use this
command all the time to go to the Google Search field in Safari. Even
though I hide the address bar (toggled between show and hide with
Command-Shift-backslash on an English input keyboard, or "Command-
Vertical line" as it is announced in the View menu options) and
bookmarks bar (Command-Shift-B toggle) in Safari, using this shortcut
doesn't keep the address bar open. I press Command-Option-F and the
address bar opens. I type in my search text and press return, and the
address bar closes again while my search is executed.

Using the Google Search bar (from Command-Option-F) for your searches
gives you access to another search results snapback key: Command-
Option-S will snap you back to your last search page. This shortcut
only works if you used the Google Search bar to do your search. It
does not work if you ran your search by entering search terms in the
search field on the Googl

Ipod 5g voiceover queries

2009-09-13 Thread Scott Rutkowski
Hi all.

I'm thinking about buying one of the new 5g nano's with the voiceover support
built right in.

can anyone who owns one of these answer the following please?

1. Is the fm radio fully accessible and can you set your own station presets?
2. Does the pedometter actually work and is it usable?
I would really like the pedometer so I can know how far i've walked on the
treadmill etc.

3. Are there any features we can't access using voiceover on the new 5g ipod
nano?
I understand we won't be able tuuse such feature as contacts games and some of
the extras.

finally is the voiceover in the 5g nano actually like in the 3rd shuffle not
using little clips generated like on the 4g nano?

Thanks for your time.

Voiceover now announces attribute changes and keyboard layout changes!

2009-09-13 Thread Simon Cavendish

Dear Listers,

I have some exciting news about Voiceover.

Voiceover now announces text attributes changes when working in
TextEdit by saying for instance "bold checked" and "bold unchecked"
when pressing the shortcut key command+B. The same is true of the
other attributes like italic and underline. I am thrilled by these
changes which I had requested from the Accessibility Team some months
ago. It makes all the difference in the world to know now whether you
have activated a given attribute or not.

Better still, for those of us who use a few keyboardl layouts in order
to work in foreign languages, when the command+spacebar or option
+spacebar shortcut keybs are pressed, Voiceover now announces which
keyboard layout is loaded. I just cannot believe how wonderful it is.
I've written to Apple to thank them for these vital changes.

For those of you who have more than two keyboard layouts on the menu,
command+spacebar will alternate between two last keyboard layouts used
only. However, option+spacebar will take you through all the keyboards
that you have put on the menu. Just wonderful. Again, I asked for this
feature a few months ago but wasn't at all sure that it would be
implmeneted any time soon.
With best wishes, Simon

First off, if you haven't already found it, there's a new submenu in
the view menu that allows you to choose what you want the playlist
browser to show. You can check mark genre, artist, album, etc...
This will get the playlist browser to at least appear as it used to.
Now, with regards to getting Voice Over to actual read the items in
the browser list without having to interact with everything is another
issue. Some folks have figured out different work arounds that I
would recommend checking out, but it really is quite buggy right now.
Good luck.

Re: iTunes 9 column browser query

2009-09-13 Thread Nik Petersson

Hi, using the new browser in version 9, you need to go to view, column
browser options and select what data you want to show.

Thanks!

Re: iTunes 9 column browser query

2009-09-13 Thread Justin Kauflin

First off, if you haven't already found it, there's a new submenu in
the view menu that allows you to choose what you want the playlist
browser to show. You can check mark genre, artist, album, etc...
This will get the playlist browser to at least appear as it used to.
Now, with regards to getting Voice Over to actual read the items in
the browser list without having to interact with everything is another
issue. Some folks have figured out different work arounds that I
would recommend checking out, but it really is quite buggy right now.
Good luck.

Re: Query about 10.6.1 update

2009-09-13 Thread Anne Robertson

Hello Jean-Christophe,

Whatever anyone may claim, I looked at the version of flash installed
on my MacBook and it wasn't the latest version. It is now, however,
because I updated it manually.

I've also discovered what changes the size of the update, it all
depends on what you installed with Snow Leopard. I did a
straightforward install, whereas my husband installed all possible
printer drivers. My update was 9.8 MB and his was 75 MB. He also has
all the developer tools, etc.

Cheers,

Anne

 Hi,

I'm sorry but I do not have the multi-touch track pad so I really
cannot offer help. However, I understand that you can use the
keyboard help to play with the track pad as well. Press vo plus K.
Then try different gestures. When you're done practicing press

I bet someone here will have more information for you.

iTunes 9 column browser query

2009-09-13 Thread Scott Rutkowski

Hi all.

Does anyone know in the new itunes 9 for the mac how to use the column
browser feature?
it's different to how it used to behave in version 8.21.
I've typed in a search term while selecting music in the source view.
I did a command b to enable the column browser then tab over to the
playlist column and I see things like artists compilations in the
column. I'm wondering how are you meant to then select a compilation
once you find compilations in the playlist column?
Just to the right of the playlist column is the songs table.
In itunes 8 you could tab between the different searches with the
artist browser.

if anyone can explain how this new column browser works, i'd be really
greatful.

Thanks.

Re: VO+f8 doesn't work after upgrade to SnowLeopard

hey, you have to go into system preferences and then select keyboard.
then there's a checkbox that says "use all f1, f2 etc as standard
function keys" or something to that effect, make sure that checkbox is
checked. then you'll be able to use your VO f8 as you normally would.
