Yuma, what is this team that you speak of? Are you selling anything, or is
this a type of hobbyist group?

I just remember seeing a post from you every few weeks for the last few months
about things that your team is looking in to, but I'm completely ignorant about
who, and what, you and your team are. Are they blind devs? Are they sighted
iPhone devs curious about helping the blind? Is your team hired outsourcers? Do
you work for a larger company, and so manage this team?

use full 3D audio to move and interact around. They will have augmented
powers in audio form which allows them to hear sighted players move farther
away than the sighted do. We were also thinking about magic spells for the

I think that by increasing CPU usage on an audio only game experience, we

RE: 3D audio game

2010-02-28 Thread Bryan Smart
Thanks Jim. The NLS player is a cool little piece of tech.

Mobile games would be fun, especially since they're good ways to pass time when
you're out and about. Desktop games are easier to produce and sell, but there
probably are more blind people with an iPhone than a Mac, so it makes sense to
sell to the larger group. There are more blind people using Windows than any
other platform, and accessible game developers for Windows still have a hard
time finding enough customers to even support the full time work of a single
developer. For now, at least, I can't imagine that there would be enough
financial support in the blind Mac community to make it possible for someone to
create a commercial accessible game.

There are some free games coming that are ports from Windows, so haven't
required the work of creating a game from scratch.

Looking to the future, most blind programmers that are in to accessible games
are envisioning online games more than stand-alone games. At least for online
games, most of the programming for the game runs on the server. The computers
of the gamers run a relatively simple program called a client. Instead of
containing all of the programming for the game, the client just contains code
to send and receive commands from the server: tell the server about key
presses, read messages that come back from the server, play sounds, etc. Since
the clients aren't extremely complicated, it will be easier to make versions of
the clients for Windows, Mac, Linux, and portable devices as time goes on. That
way, we won't necessarily have games just for Windows, or just for Mac. The
game will just be out there on the Internet, and we'll get Windows or Mac
clients to access it.

Also, its quite difficult for people to pirate an online game. They can share
the client all they want, but they can't connect to the server without a paid
account. Most all of the accessible game developers on Windows have been burned
very hard by cracks. Many of them aren't able to afford to continue developing
games because of the missed income.

Re: how to go page up and page down in a text area?

2010-02-28 Thread Esther

Hello Jonathan,

I also have a MacBook, and when using TextEdit I use Control-V to move
down one page. You will need to set your Navigation options to check
Mouse cursor follows VoiceOver cursor under VoiceOver Utility to use
this with RTF documents. This is in Leopard; I don't know whether
there are conflicts with Snow Leopard settings. Some time ago, Greg
Kearney posted a link to the emacs-style default system Cocoa commands:

http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~jrus/Site/System%20Bindings.html

The first set of these commands are simply the ones for moving and
selecting that were described in this archived post about Moving and
Selecting in Cocoa apps:

http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg02038.html

The second set of commands are Control key sequences that deal with
moving with scrolling, including page up and page down. Of these, the
sequences that move or select to the beginning or end of a document
(or table listing, such as in the messages table for mail) work with
VoiceOver: (VO-Home and VO-End, or VO-Fn-Shift-Left Arrow and VO-Fn-
Shift-Right Arrow on a laptop -- although recently we were told that
holding down the Option key while pressing the Up Arrow or Down Arrow
button and waiting for a while will also work). In a recent
discussion, Anne posted:

Begin forwarded message:

Hello everyone,

The situation with Home, End, Page up and Page down is this. When
you use these commands, the visual focus moves but the VO focus does
not. So, for totally blind users, it appears as though they don't
work.

Cheers,

Anne

I think what happens for arbitrary scrolling and paging, the visual
focus will not necessarily fall on a line that has VoiceOver focus,
unless you move to the beginning or end of a document where this line
is well defined, and that's why the scrolling/page up or down commands
work in these cases, but not for paging movement within the document.

The third set of commands are the emacs-like combinations with the
Control key pressed together with letter keys. Control-v to move down
a page is in this category. I suspect that these all work because
they are oriented for editing lines, words, and characters in a
document. Even so, you may experience focus-related problems if you
are working with anything except plain text documents, unless you have
your mouse cursor tracking your VoiceOver cursor, and you may have to
try to move (e.g. VO-Right arrow) to have VoiceOver update and pick up
from the location you jumped to. The other thing you can try is to
use the Find command (Command-F) to move to point later in your
document. Again, this is in Leopard, and results depend on your
navigation settings. This will work if you have everything except
VoiceOver cursor follows Mouse cursor checked under navigation, and
specifically have Mouse cursor follows VoiceOver cursor checked.

Of this last group of commands, the ones I sometimes use are:

Control-amove to beginning of line
Control-emove to end of line
Control-xtranspose letters (good for typos)
Control-vmove one page down

HTH.

Cheers,

Esther

Deleting an iPhoto library

2010-02-28 Thread Robert Carter
Hi All,

I am attempting to switch my sighted wife from Windows to the Mac. I mistakenly
imported her photos in to iPhoto while I was logged in as me. They are now in
my iPhoto library and I want to get them in to her library instead. A blind guy
doesn't need photos. So, I know that I can import them in to her library by
logging in as her. I am not seeing a way to delete my library. Does anybody
know how to do this?

hi all,

I want that I can:

By default, the last folder should be shown in the windowlist, If I don't

This should be the default for al windows I open in finder.

Also, if possible, I want to have the detailview, so that I can see the date o

Is this possible together?

MacBook Pro 13 and wireless

2010-02-28 Thread Carolyn
Hi Mac Family:
I have an interesting dilema. There are some unsecured networks at my
workplace, as well as some very secure ones. When I take my Dell laptop to
work, it automaticly finds and connects to these. However, my mac doesn't seem
to be able to. It gives messages about not not connecting to server, and shows
connection doctor and says to use alternative server in list below, but there
isn't a list that I can find. If anyone can give me any useful info about
settings to look at, or maybe even contact me by phone to walk me through
trying to get it going, that would be totally awesome. I work from 8--2
mountain time, and best time is between 1 2.
Or just drop an email if that works.
Thanks in advance for any ideas/assistance.

P.s.: I am linking up with my local apple store, and they have someone who is
certified to teach with voice-over. I'm pretty excited!

Re: 3D audio game

2010-02-28 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux
Also,

The reason why i am looking into multiplayer functionality between sighted and
non sighted is to create a richness in storyline and capabilities in a platform
which is used either on the go, between commuting, breaks, before going to
sleep, etc.

I have tried World of Warcraft once during a particularly cloudy summer in
Paris, and i got completely hooked. I was using a shadow priest with healing
properties as well as destructive spells, and i found that socializing behind a
magical character allowed for much fun and conversation with other players. If
this type of interaction could include blind people, who will play the roles of
magical creatures and denizens of the multiplayer realm, with special powers no
sighted players have, it would greatly thin the divide of communication,
interaction and overall identifying aspects in real society.

I always went with the notion that my body here was ethereal, and that
providing one's soul with an identity was essential to achieve things. It is
good to be real, and be active in reality, but also essential for the nurture
of one's imagination in creating worlds with one's experiential baggage, and
create Avatars of oneself. A lot of writers use pseudonyms for the simple fact
that they live with an alter who nurtures their space, mind and overall mental
capacities to assimilate things.

ANd now with the arrival of these devices which are made to increase the
integration of less capacitated people by fate or accident, this can also in
many respects widen the possibilities, as developement brings discovery.

I should post all of these on a blog, but this is my contribution to the list.
I want to use my ressources to help provide a vehicle for accessibility, to
open doors to new techniques or technologies.

Best

Yuma

Subject: MacBook Pro 13 and wireless

Hi Mac Family:

I have an interesting dilema. There are some unsecured networks at my
workplace, as well as some very secure ones. When I take my Dell laptop to
work, it automaticly finds and connects to these. However, my mac doesn't
seem to be able to. It gives messages about not not connecting to server,
and shows connection doctor and says to use alternative server in list
below, but there isn't a list that I can find. If anyone can give me any
useful info about settings to look at, or maybe even contact me by phone to
walk me through trying to get it going, that would be totally awesome. I
work from 8--2 mountain time, and best time is between 1 2.

Or just drop an email if that works.

Thanks in advance for any ideas/assistance.

ch...@q.com 303-349-7168.

Carolyn

P.s.: I am linking up with my local apple store, and they have someone who
is certified to teach with voice-over. I'm pretty excited!

Re: how to go page up and page down in a text area?

2010-02-28 Thread Esther

Hi Jonathan,

I can use Control-v to move down a page in TextEdit without setting
mouse follows VoiceOver cursor, but you asked about use in Pages as
well as in TextEdit. I usually have TextEdit set to work with plain
text files by default, which is better for multi-lingual use. In that
case, I have no need to set my mouse cursor to follow my VoiceOver
cursor. However, there are instances where I've been sent a Word
document or RTF formatted file. In those cases, I may need to set my
mouse cursor to follow my VoiceOver cursor to navigate reliably
without losing focus, which is why I included that comment. (I
checked some documents before replying, and I had to reset my cursor
tracking to navigate consistently for some documents that were not
plain text. This was also the case for some instances where I used
find to move to the end of the file on the basis of a text search.)

OK, try this. I can't find it documented anywhere if I run a Google
search, but I can use Fn-Option-Up arrow and Fn-Option-Down arrow to
move up and down a page in TextEdit. I'm a little hesitant to
recommend something non-standard, because at one time I imported some
WordService keybinding definitions into my Services menu. (It turns
out I had to fix quite a number of instances where I removed conflicts
with existing key definitions after I did this.) I don't think these
sequences were part of the definitions, but you'll just have to try
the combinations out and see whether they work for you. Again, I'm
using an Early 2008 MacBook (the last 13 release before the Unibody
models came out) with Leopard.

Let me know whether this works.

Also, two slightly off-topic items that may be of interest to you:
First, I recall that you program in Python. The latest entry in
O'Reilly's eBook Deal of the Day at:

feed://feeds.feedburner.com/oreilly/ebookdealoftheday
is Learning Python 4th ed. for $9.99 for the eBook bundle (DRM-free,
PDF, ePub, and other formats) with the coupon code of DDPYT. These
are updated not quite every day, and the current code is still good
(for about a $30 savings on this 1216 page volume by Mark Lutz,
released September 2009).

Also, a while ago there was some discussion about how to read your
(Spanish) blog in English. I meant to point out that anyone can copy
a java scriptlet from the Google Translate page and save it as a
bookmark on their Bookmarks bar. Because you'd want the java
scriptlet to get pasted into the address field of the bookmark, what
you'd do is copy an existing bookmark and then edit the name and
address field. Then, you'd paste in the java scriptlet for your
language into the address field. If this were saved as the first
bookmark, for example, then pressing Command-1 would translate the
contents of any current web page into your selected language.

So you'd do the following in Safari. (Note, keeping the bookmarks bar
and address bar hidden usually makes navigation of the bookmarks page
easier, although it's not necessary: toggle the bookmarks bar on and
off with Command-Shift-B, and toggle the address bar (also known as
toolbar) on or off with Command-Shift-Backslash on an English language
keyboard or else use the Safari View menu on the menu bar to Hide
toolbar)

1. Open the bookmarks page (Command-Option-B)
2. Navigate to the table of bookmark collections and folders (I
usually use Command-F followed by Shift-Tab to get to this table, but
tabbing or shift tabbing will get you there) and interact (VO-Shift-
Down arrow)
3. Select the Bookmarks Bar (either arrrow down or type the first
few letters of the name)
4. Stop interacting with the table of bookmark collections and
folders (VO-Shift-Up arrow)
5. Navigate (VO-Right arrow) to the table of Bookmarks Bar bookmarks
and interact (VO-Shift-Down Arrow)
6. Move to the top of the table (VO-Home, or VO-Fn-Shift-Left Arrow on
a laptop)
7. If you do not have any entries under your Bookmarks Bar, press
Command-D to create a bookmark of your last visited web page
location. A dialog window will appear, and you'll be prompted to
Type a name for the bookmark, and choose where to keep it. VO-Right
arrow to the name of the bookmark and type in Translate. VO-Right
arrow again to the pop up button, press it (VO-Space), and use your
arrow keys to find Bookmarks Bar (not Bookmarks Menu), then press
return. VO-Right Arrow to the Add button and press it (VO-Space) to
add the bookmark.
8. If you do have entries in your Bookmarks Bar, do a copy and paste
to duplicate your first entry (Command-C, then Command-V). Then, VO-
Down arrow and VO-Up arrow again to verify that you have a duplicate
of your first entry. You can use the context menu (VO-Shift-M), use
your arrow keys to select Edit Name, and press return. Then, you
can type in Translate or other title for your bookmark, and press
return when done.

9. Navigate to

Hello list; I need a little help here. I need one person using an
apple laptop or desktop to visit a website for me and let me know if
it is broken or if I've been blocked from visiting it. I've had some
harsh words with the owner and he threatened to bar me from his site.
I don't believe i did anything wrong, nor do my friend and family; but
I need to know what's happening before I go to war with this fellow.
so, if one of you could just go to www.usedrides.com and see if its
up and running or if its giving a nul error message, I would be very
greatful. Thank and take care, Max

Re: Itunes 9, Songs Table VS Album View

2010-02-28 Thread Esther

Hi Jim,

This is doubtless old-fashioned of me, but I prefer to use list view
and use the file browser (now name the column browser) to view the
songs table. However, here's the way to change your songs table to
show as groups of albums:

Switch to grid view, either by using the shortcut sequence (Command-
Option-4), selecting as Grid in the View menu on the iTunes menu
bar, or by navigating to the Grid View Switcher button in the iTunes
application and pressing (VO-Space). The view buttons are next to the
search text field, so the fastest way to get to them in general is to
move to the search text field (Command-Option-F) and then VO-Left
arrow to the view button you want (list, grid, or cover flow) and
press it. For completeness, the iTunes view buttons are:

Command-Option-1 Shows or hides the main iTunes window
Command-Option-2 Shows or hides the Equalizer
Command-Option-3 Show as list
Command-Option-4 Show as grid
Command-Option-5 Show as Cover Flow

In grid view, you can then choose one of the buttons for Album,
Artists, Genres, or Composers and press (VO-Space). The entries
in the grid will be displayed according to your category. Navigate
through by Album, and use VO-Space to view the individual tracks
associated with that album.

My preference is to use list view (Command-Option-3), and select
albums using the file browser (toggled on or off with Command-B). I
immediately set the iTunes 9 configuration back to the way this worked
for iTunes 8 and earlier: namely, after setting to list view, I went
to the View menu on the iTunes menu bar (Command-M, then press V),
and arrowed down to Column Browser, then used right arrow to move to
the submenu and arrowed down to On top. I also selected albums
under the Column Browser submenu so that I could use the browser to
select both artists and albums. Unfortunately, each selected option
requires a separate trip to the View menu on the iTunes menu bar.
Setting up the file browser this way under the list view menu options
works fine for me -- an easy way to select albums or multiple albums
by the same artist and view tracks.

HTH

Cheers,

Esther

Hello.

I should be able to figure this out after all this time, but my song
collection is growing quite a lot, and I'm trying to figure out how to
change the songs table to show as groups of albums instead of
individual songs.

Any help with this is sure appreciated.
Thanks.
