Re: A time machine question
There are two status bars. One press of VO + m will get you to the first one. Press VO + m again to get to the next status bar. On this status bar is where you will find the time machine drop down menu. Esther this is exactly the way I have been giving Keynote presentations. Skim has been a lifesaver. This was never more true than at CSUN a few weeks ago when one of my Ph.D. students had a presentation on a laptop that wouldn't work with their portable projector. Re: the apple user?
Hi Dónal, In Keynote there is an Export option under the File Menu that will let you save your presentations as PDF files, among the other formats. If you use this mode, you can give your presentations the same way you do for the PDF files generated from LaTeX, I think. This is especially true if you use the presentation view mode options (Command-Option-P) of Skim, instead of using Full Screen mode in Preview for displaying slides. People who use PowerPoint on the Mac should also be able to export their presentations into a PDF format that you can run as a presentation the same way. Incidentally, there's a Keynote Remote app for the iPhone/iPod Touch that lets you control presentations. It's not quite ready for prime time with VoiceOver use, though you can use it in a semi-clunky way by configuring it in landscape mode, and then using the triple-click home to turn VoiceOver on and off for each slide to navigate. (Pretty painful, and not really practical). Also, it only announces the slide number as a number in the sequence, and labels such as "Current Slide" and "Next Slide". There hasn't been much work on this app since it was released. I wonder whether there will be an update for the iPad iWork releases. If you want to read up about the "not-so-state-of-the- art" with the Keynote Remote app, it's described in my archived post for Yuma about giving presentations from last Fall: http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg11212.html (Re: iphone trackpad pro) Maybe someone should drop Apple accessibility a note about functions they might like implemented. I did actually complete my part with out ruining everyone else's :) It's great that I can use keynote and save the file as a .ppt, which means that everyone else using windows machines in my group can open and read the file. Re: Can a mini be connected to a TV and work with VoiceOver?
VGA is an analog signal so it will lose something in translation. Depending on the model of mini there should be a DVI and/or display-port video connection. So you just need a cable that has DVI on one end and HDMI oon the other. I didn't try it with a mini but the a MacBook Pro there is a DVI port on the side which worked just fine on my parents HD tv last time I was out to visit them. Their TV came with a DVI to HDMI cable so we plugged it in to find out what would happen and it just worked. Re: the apple user?
You got to be kidding. Well now I am going to play with Keynote and such. I am also taking courses where Powerpoint is used, but I tend to trade tasks with team mates because I can't touch a Powerpoint file without trashing it. So, I am glad to hear this as well. I am not quite sure what to ask, but I do appreciate the help and once I get into playing with Numbers, I will let you know. I've had these apps for a while, but between a full-time job and class, I have not much time to play. Thanks, On Apr 22, 2010, at 4:11 PM, Olivia Norman wrote: > Keynote works really well for me. Re: the apple user?
Yep preparing presentations with Keynote is not bad at all. I haven't quite figured out how to navigate each individual slide when full-screen mode is enabled. Vo reads the entire contents of each slide, (which is ok) but if, for example, I want to navigate to a specific bullet point on a slide, I haven't as yet figured out a way to do so when I'm in full-screen mode. I'm in the fortunate position though that most of my presentations are given using PDF files generated from LaTeX. Re: Can a mini be connected to a TV and work with VoiceOver?
As I stated earlier, I'm a novice when it comes to cables. My early research shows that one can purchase a mini DVI to HDMI cable. For the sighted people in the household, the HDMI is supposed to provide better picture quality over the VGA connection. Rumors state that future Macs will move to HDMI, which will enable one to transfer picture and sound through one cable. Brett C. Hi, Fact is, though, that even if you have it in Cocoa, no one said it would show everything you need like JAWS does. JAWS is scripted to the core, VoiceOver is not. For me, Numberrs and Tables have been working great. VoiceOver might lag a bit sometimes, but that's barable. figured out how to assign your own sounds to keys in garageband
Hello, I have heard people asking if it was possible to trigger your own audio files with a midi keyboard, or via musical typing. Well yes, it is possible. The problem is you will need a bit of sighted assistance to set it up. Step 1: If you don't already have one, create a software instrument with command option N. Then open up track info with command I. 2: at the unknown box where you choose your instrument, pick radio sounds which is found under sound effects in the unknown pop up. 3. Press command shift k to bring up the on screen keyboard for musical typing. Here is where you need sighted help. In the finder, find the audio sample you would like to assign to a key. The person will have to drag the file and drop it on to one of the 18 keys shown on the on screen keyboard shown on garageband. After that, you can play the sample with your midi keyboard or, your qwerty keyboard you are using on your mac. Oh! You get the best results when you use AIFF or WAV files. 4. After you have placed your samples into the on screen keyboard, press control option I to open the item chooser. type in save so you can find the save instrument button. Name it and press save. It can now be found under the sound effects category where you had previously selected radio sounds. hth -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: the apple user?
I am able to use numbers to enter data, do functions like sums, and read spreadsheets. I don't really know much about excel and jaws, but I'm not willing to pay the $1000 to get jaws, when numbers works well. I use it for my personal budgett, as well as a statistics class I'm taking this semester. If office becomes accessible, I will certainly consider purchasing that, because I feel that it would make it easier to use my mac for employment purposes, but in the meantime I'm doing fine with iWork 09. Will someone be demoing the Mac at Sight City in Frankfurt
Hello everyone, Next week, Sight City will be held in Frankfurt, Germany from April 28-30. Since I will be there, I was hoping to see what kind of presence the Apple folk have in the European arena. Does anyone know if any of the adaptive tech companies will be demoing Apple products with Voice Over or with Braille displays? If anyone who will be attending would be interested in getting together during the exhibition period, mail me off list: m...@busboom.at Best regards, Mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Free (today only) Accessible Lonely Planet Travel Guide apps for 13 cities for iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad
Hi all, Lonely Planet is making their travel guide apps for 13 cities free for download at the iTunes App Store through today (April 22, 2010). This is meant for all the travelers who have been stranded in cities due to flight restrictions on air traffic as a consequence of the volcanic ash from the recent Iceland eruptions. These guides are normally $10 to $15 each, and the App Store links to them can be found either at the Lonely Planet blog page: • "Free iPhone Guides for Stranded Travelers" (Lonely Planet Blog) http://inside-digital.blog.lonelyplanet.com/2010/04/19/lp-volcano-rescue/ or at the TUAW web page announcing this freebie: • "Lonely Planet giving away free iPhone guides in honor of Eyjafjallajökull messing with Europe" (TUAW) http://i.tuaw.com/2010/04/19/lonely-planet-giving-away-free-iphone-guides-in-honor-of-eyjafja/ They're mostly accessible, with the exception of the map interface, since the bulk of the content is straight text and content list views, and you open the app up in the table of contents with the button for "The Book" selected at the bottom left of the page. Nearly all the items are links that are directly selectable with a double tap to navigate to the indicated section of the book. There are a few entries that are only headers for the next listed entries (e.g. "Background"). In the main text the unlabeled buttons at the bottom of the page are for previous page (button at bottom left corner) and next page (button at bottom right corner), and the unlabeled buttons between them at the bottom of the page are apparently for adjusting the text fonts to smaller or larger letters. To move back to the table of contents, double tap the "Back" button at the top right of the page. Images interspersed throughout the text have labeled captions that can be read out. The table of contents page that you reach on opening the app has five buttons at the bottom. As noted, "The Book" at the bottom left, simply points to the Table of Contents. The next button "Nearby" takes you to a list of points of interest (restaurants, landmarks, shops, etc.) listed by distance from your location (if you allow the app to check for your current locations -- I didn't, for the purpose of review, since I'm not in any of these cities). The guide descriptions give name, category (e.g. restaurant by cuisine type and expense rating according to number of dollar signs, cabernet, bar, etc.), address, distance, telephone number (double tapping lets you add number to contacts), hours, and location (e.g. by area or public transportation stop), and a short review paragraph. They're clearly using icons to represent some of these categories, since as you flick through you'll hear "image" just before each of these kinds of information entries. Again, there are four unlabeled buttons at the bottom of each point of interest page, and the button at the bottom left will take you to the previous point of interest in the list (ordered by distance from your current location) and the one at the bottom right takes you to the next listed point of interest. Here, the center two unlabeled buttons perform different functions: unlabeled button number 2 is for "Save to Favorites"; unlabeled button number 3 accesses a map that VoiceOver cannot navigate. (There's a "locate" button at the top right that brings up a warning message that tells you that choosing this option means they won't be able to find you on the map.) Using a VoiceOver pass-through gesture (double tap and hold) doesn't produce results. Using the "Back" button, takes you back to the list of point-of- interest for the selected "Nearby" button (number 2 of 5 at the bottom). Button number 3, the "Map" button. Again, as with the points of interest under the "Nearby" entry, I was unable to get the map interface to work with VoiceOver. If you toggle VoiceOver off, and tap on the screen, you might hit a point of interest and bring up its entry, but the interface just doesn't give you any information about when you're near an item. A "Filter" button at the top left of the screen lets you turn off (or turn on again) switches for the different point-of-interest categories of the places to eat, sights, entertainment, shopping, or places to stay, and pressing the "Done" button returns you to the (inaccessible) map. Button number 4, the "Search" button, lets you double tap in the search field at the top of the page to bring up a virtual keyboard and type in your search terms. When you're done typing, double tap the "search" button at the bottom right of the screen, just beside the space bar. If there are matches, they'll show up below the search text box, and you can either move your finger down the list or flick to hear the next entries announced. Double tapping a selection takes you to the point-of-interest description page, with addr

RE: the apple user?
Yes, could not agree more. Memory and processer is a factor in running VM. If you have a low end Mac that does not have but 1 or 2 gb of memory I suggest using Boot camp. This does away with the memory problem and processer problem. Just some thoughts. For Windows XP, set the memory size to 1GB. For Windows 7, set the memory size to 1.5GB. You can use as little as 512MB for XP and 1GB for Windows 7 without dramatically affecting performance. They'll still run fairly fast, though not at full speed, and they'll start to lag if you open more than a few programs. If you plan to use your virtual machine like a full PC, with Outlook, IE, Word, and several other programs all open at once, you shouldn't be using these small memory values. > > People will tell you things like they can run XP with 384MB, or they can run Windows 7 with 512MB. Beyond that, there is a level that makes it possible to run a VM without the frustrating lags, but you can't open many programs at once, and you're missing out on some speed benefits. Further still is the optimal memory level, where giving the VM any more memory might improve performance a little, but the improvements are negligible. Finally, there is the maximum amount of memory that it is possible for a VM to use. The ideal is to give the VM as much as it can affectively use, but you can't give it so much that OSX doesn't have any left over for itself. In order to get good results, you have to work out a balance. > > For example, I use Win 7 VMs, and I give them 3GB of memory. Win 7 could run well with 1.5GB, but, when Windows has a lot of memory available, it uses the extra to hold frequently used system files and other application components in memory, so that it isn't necessary to spend time loading them from the hard drive when needed. I have 8GB of memory in this Mac, so, while giving Windows 7 that extra 1.5GB will only help it run fractionally faster, I have the memory to spare, so it is better to use the extra memory to do what I can to make Windows performance as good as it can be for a VM. > > Also, be sure that your VM is only using a single processor core. Even though you physical CPU has 2 cores, and it is possible to share both of them between the VM and OSX, everything will run in a more stable manner with a single core VM.
