That will not be the way for you to proceed then. You'd first have to
install fink and get fink to update available packages then get fink to
download and install lynx for you, all of it inside terminal mode and lynx
is a terminal mode application itself too.On Tue, 14 Dec 2010, chad wrote:

So far as VLC, I uninstalled it because I found it wasn't behaving itself. I

 Hi all,

I'm new on the list. Bought myself a Macbook Pro a few months back and
just got the iPhone. Great stuff.

One question though: Last week I got a bluetooth headset for my iPhone.
The idea was to use it in busy places so I don't have to turn the volume
of my phone up to hear the speech. Unfortunately, the headset only seems
to work for actual phone calls. Does anyone know how to get the speech
(well, all the sound) from the iPhone through a bluetooth headset (in
other words, without putting a jack in the headphone output)?

Re: Which VLC player am I suposed to download?

2010-12-13 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Well, if I want to listen to the live stream of:

www.wwl.com

Silverlight is required. I never had any issues getting it to work.

Now, with the flash stopping extension, (I forget for the moment what it's
called), I do have to press a couple of extra buttons for it to work; but, It's
really not hard to tell where the buttons are.

So far as VLC, I uninstalled it because I found it wasn't behaving itself. I
found that it would never play at the standard eefault level, and, I couldn't
get the buttons to press quietly without their names being said every time.

I have a feeling that's for another thread, however.

the one for intel macs. To play windows media, do a search for flip4mac, that's
the plug in you need, it's a plug in for the quick time player.

default to plain text e-mails questions

2010-12-13 Thread Christina
I need e-mails that I send to a particular e-mail address to go in plain text.
It seems that I remember way back when I was using windows and outlook for mail
and contacts that there was an option for specific e-mail addresses to be set
to plain text only so that any e-mails sent to that specific address would go
in plain text only. Is there a way to do this in apple mail or address book.
I can't find a place to do this. I do not want all my e-mails to go in plain
text but just the ones that go to a specific e-mail address.

Thanks,
Christina

HI Christina,

Check under the Apple menu: About This Mac... and you'll see your computer's
configuration. This will tell you which version you need.

If your Mac is only 2 or 3 years old, you should be okay to download the OS X
version.

Re: Asking a recently discussed question, moving ring tones to iTunes

2010-12-13 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Marlaina,

Try this:

1. Copy all the new ringtones into a single folder on your Desktop called
whatever you'd like.
2. Open itunes.
3. Press cmd-o to bring up the Add to Library dialog.
4. Press cmd-2 to make sure things are in List mode in the dialog.
5. Press cmd-shift-d to bring focus to the Desktop in the File Table.
6. Navigate to the File Table and Interact With it.
7. From within the File Table, locate the folder you put the ringtones in.
8. Stop Interacting With the File Table.
9. Navigate to the Open button and press it.

This should place them into the iTunes Library and automatically put them into
the correct category.

Let me know how it goes.

Later...

The trick is to look very carefully close to the actual download link. YOu
want to VOArrow left a few times. You'll notice that the format you are about
to download is indicated. The "change" link is just to the right of this
indication. Click the change link and a pop up menu will show of the formats
available.

changing Audible format on the Mac?

2010-12-13 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Sorry if this is a really stupid question, but I can't figure it out. On the
Audible site, how do I tell what format I'm downloading, and how do I change it
if I need to? I've always been able to do it on my PC, but I can't seem to do
it on my Mac.
thanks,
Donna

No, I'm saying it works but is a visual effect. If sighted people use page up
or page down to look at something, they can still not perform any operation at
that point. Typing will send them straight back to where they were. That is
what I mean by a visual effect.

In TextEdit or Pages you can use the VO Page Down command (VO-Page down or
VO-FN-Down arrow on a laptop). For this to work in TextEdit, you have to set it
to Wrap to page.

Otherwise, you have the commands to go to first item, first visible item, last
item, last visible item, next sentence, next paragraph and so on.

If you have a multitouch trackpad, you can use the trackpad commander to make
scrolling through documents easier.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: My Eyepal demo is here.

2010-12-13 Thread Yuma Decaux
Eric,

This dialogue has gone well beyond justifying either train of thought, me as a
freshly blind person and you as a veteran owner of these devices. What you took
into it personally though is that you thought i was villifying and putting my
chin u up towards people who actually purchase these completely off the price
devices, which i know are essential for certain tasks which lead to potential
employment, but you just made this personal by calling or suggesting names,
telling me that i live in a soapbox and the likes. getting demagogically
argumentative over big portions of the community. THinking that i am an ennemy.
It's a shame that you think you need to defend yourself this way by attacking
me an individual when the reverse was not true. Read through the lines Eric, i
was talking about the corporations, not the individuals who need this. ANd
remember that i am in the latter group,, blind for 2 years, lost all of my
capabilities as i was a 12 year veteran in the 3D and animation industry. . And
i didn't loose my sight in the slow and painful way that most do, but through
big trauma, a systemic infection, a lot of general anesthetics, near death
about 4 times in a hospital and i came out of it, just did everything in my
power to do, and still manage, actually own my studio, help disabled
individuals to earn a skill in 3D and a job outside in developing countries.
I've been at this before even i lost my eyesight. And we are on our third wave
of guys, 15 of them still working with us. So far over 200 individuals have
packed knowledge and are redefining the 3D landscape in cambodia. They do it
with dignity because they decided that no matter their circumstance, they can
make it through all the social stigmas and the poverty that exemplifies the
region. And they inspire me just as i inspire them, more deeply now that i have
no sight, because this means that no-one is different from the other, business
as usual, solidifying what we believe is true and good. And we did it by self
funding, not through NGOs that have no concept of balue for money, nor by
pulling strings or obediently offuscating our individual powers for some dude
who's ok throwing a whole lot of money for a help standard that has turned
business, not the other way around. Check the methodologies, each have their
pros and cons but both philosophies create similar progenitures. THe difference
is how much is put in it. It's an economic term which is off topic here, but
i'm sure you understand.

I have also taken a big interest in finding ways to empower young khmer blind
individuals in other fields in the computer realm, and have started contact
with various entities which can make a khmer screen reading solution. With the
internal capabilities of our studio. Guess what? One license of JAWS was
purchase by the local minister of communications and that one license is being
used in a village near the capital for 100 young blind khmers. They can only
afford one because its so out of price. SO we are thinking of buying a bunch of
older mac minis to allow these kids to use a computer, from their villages,
know how to connect, and become active in their districts with a lot of
capacities to use convergence as a means of being an integral part of their
communities.

So don't come to me with your pretence of my lofty intellectual masturbations
when i am fully active in life, and that's not only within these mailing lists.
If you get that clear than i'm fine with continuing this debate. If you are
not, then you actually feel guilty of selling these products you demo because
they either are not of the standards you would like, or simply because you sell
them even if you know they are overpriced for what they do. That is your
problem, and it's also my right to speak out about something i disagree with.
But you don't have the right to assume that i've got a golden spoon feeding my
endeavors. In fact, because i've been so active i am actually quite fine
financially, and i know what i am doing. This is an experience i am trying to
express in this mailing list because whatever the circumstances, we, are
learning what can be done, and what should be avoided. I am just a proponent of
alternatives to your 2k device here, as you said it yourself, most people don't
have the ressources to buy one. And no, i definetely won't need to ask to
purchase one if i wanted to, but it's just not a sustainable solution because
it's not even portable. And for a fraction of the price you get something
working fine Instead of having to fork out another 150USD for a one platform
only software that should already come with the device. It'll cost yet another
150USD if it was for linux? It's an obsolete model that asks for more at every
possible corner, then takes financing from donations and gov funding. That
fuels tax exemptions for donors who aren't completely aware of the
alternatives. This is why i love this mailing

Re: macbook pro command

That's really odd. I tried a lot of the commands in mail as I was composing,
just to make sure I got all the modifiers right. The fingers remember, but the
brain forgets. :) Command up arrow and command down arrow take me to bottom
and top of the message when composing. I just checked and it also works when
reading a message, which I wasn't aware of before.

I do and I have a lot of problems with their site. they use flash for the
account payments control panel (as I am totally blind, this is incompatible

Carolyn,

Every little bit of info I can get does help. Erik's commands work fine in my
apple mail, as do they in text edit. I'll try your suggestions as well.

I haven't even begun to try dealing with tables in a text document yet. LOL,
I'm still struggling with trying to get iTunes to behave the way I want it to
behave!

Thank you so much for these suggestions.

When I read Erick's post, I tried his way, then tried Nick's suggestion,
Erick's worked then, but does not work in this email. GO figure.
Home and end with the FN keys seem to work best in actual text documents. One
handy thing I'll often employ with some success is shift-fn-vo-keys, with the
arrows. . This command will take you to the top left, and bottom right of
many things, as long as you've interacted. So, I often use it in tables, but
also in documents. I've mostly used it with left and right arrows, as in home
and end.
Hope this helps a little.

One question though: Last week I got a bluetooth headset for my iPhone.
The idea was to use it in busy places so I don't have to turn the volume
of my phone up to hear the speech. Unfortunately, the headset only seems
to work for actual phone calls. Does anyone know how to get the speech
(well, all the sound) from the iPhone through a bluetooth headset (in
other words, without putting a jack in the headphone output)?

enough to install a screen reader of your choice. Command Control enter I
believe flips in to full screen.

Re: macbook pro command

2010-12-13 Thread Carolyn Haas
Hi Marlaina:
I'm not Esther, responding, and I know she will. But, I'll share with you that
these things work differently depending on which app you're in, and sometimes
on the weather.:)

To select text add shift to any of these commands. IE, to select the next

Re: macbook pro command

2010-12-13 Thread Marlaina Lieberg
Esther,

I have tried this command set on my Air, and it does not work. If I want to go
to the beginning of a line, control left arrow does that and control right
takes me to the end of my line. I have been meaning to ask on this list what
on earth I am not doing, for the fn key doesn't move anything. But, I have so
many other asks here, I put that down the list a way. But now that Denise has
asked and you have answered, I thought I'd share my lack of success with fn up,
down, left and right. Do you have any thoughts? I hate all the scrolling I
do, especially when the darned document is long and I know what I need is at
the top or the bottom or near thereto, and I'm in the middle, :)

Re: Asking a recently discussed question, moving ring tones to iTunes

2010-12-13 Thread Marlaina Lieberg
What is so weird is that 3 of these ringtones went the first time I did this a
week or so ago. Yes, they are for the iPhone; they are from an app called 1001
ringtones. I think this has something to do with how confused iTunes is about
where to put things on my computer. You might remember that I am having the
issue of purchases not going to my library, which I've told iTunes is on my
fileserver. But now I can't get it to take ringtones either. When I go to
iTunes, I see the 3 that worked last week but even though the others are m4r,
and are from the same 1001 ringtone app, I can't get them to go in so that they
are visible in iTunes so I can't put them in my phone.

Re: problem with timezone change

2010-12-13 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Yuma,

What sort of problem were you having with changing the time Zone? Normally,
all you need to do is type in the first few characters of a large city close to
you in your Time Zone or in the Time Zone you wish to be in and then the OS
will do the rest. If you're having a different problem, then sorry for being
obvious.

Re: My Eyepal demo is here.

2010-12-13 Thread erik burggraaf
Well man, You've got the money to do what you want, and the skills and desire
to do your own research, and you're blind in a time when a $100 scanner will do
exactly what you need. Good for you. go back 10 years and your only options
would have been jaws, window-eyes, window bridge and hal, none of which were
under $800. Omnipage worked fine under windows. I used it for a long time
until they developed the accessibility out of it. So you'd be looking at at
least a grand for scanning software. You're an experienced user. Maybe you
could do your own training or pay your own trainer, but if you weren't and
couldn't, would you suffer under the yoke of funded help, or would you sit and
do nothing?

Go back even farther to the days of hardware speech when one of those units
could cost between 6 and 1200 dollars. I wouldn't have a braille display now
if it wasn't for funding. I simply wouldn't be able to come up with even 2 or
three grand for a cheep one, let alone 5 for the one with the features I really
wanted. Our funding system's not great. in fact, it's pretty terrible. But
it hasn't bruised my dignity in the slightest to ask for things that improve my
quality of life which I would never have any hope of owning on my own.

Most blind people aren't like you and I. If you never had the internet or a
use for the internet when you were sighted, only now you're blind and email is
the only way you might effectively communicate with some people, then how are
you supposed to do your own research on what screen readers and reading aids
and platforms are available? We need to make a lot of changes. There's no
reason why things should be astronomically priced in today's market. Our
funders should be pro-active in driving the market where it needs to go. It
will happen. It's happening, but change is slow. Meanwhile, if you need help
and your dignity won't allow you to ask for it, then you're shallow, and if you
don't need the help and scorn people who do because they put money in the
pockets of proprietary and greedy corporate business, then you're something
worse.

As far as jaws goes, I hate to be the one to defend the thing, but there are
two sides to every story. The fact of the matter is, the research it tool was
publicly marketed towards people at home who wanted to look up sports scores,
because that's a huge part of the market. On the other hand, it's also made at
least two or three proprietary corporate databases accessible for the purposes
of hiring blind employees at large companies. I'm a jaws detractor to my
toenails, but I won't stand here and tell you they should never have wasted
time on a feature that got people up and working just because it's a
proprietary and high priced piece of crap. Being blind is not easy. You take
your advantages where you find them and make the most of every opportunity, or
you're in the 85 persent or so of us who don't work. Or in my case, you bust
your butt and do everything you can and make the most of everything you get,
and you're still in the majority of blind people who don't work despite
everything you try to do. That was me for 5 or 6 years right out of college.

Simply buying and using off the shelf products and sharing information in a
group like this one has done more towards making that change a reality than all
your pronouncements from the lofty perch of your soap box could ever do. I
really think you need to take a good long step back and re-assess your
priorities. We're not your enemies here, and the big business that dominated
blind people for decades is soon going to get it's comeuppance with or with out
you railing against them. So, just try to remember that what worked out well
for you may not be right for someone else in a different situation, and there's
no sense vilifying them if they need some high priced piece of kit backed by a
company you find objectionable and paid for from sources that are beneath your
dignity.
