Re: extremely frustrated re: reading pfd files
Hi Tony, I'm sorry to hear you're having a difficult time reading the Objective C book on your Mac. I went back to look at the Objective C book in PDF format that you referenced, and this is readable in Preview provided that you remember to interact with the material. I can get this to work with Adobe Reader (shudder). Stanza (on your Desktop) is really not designed for this. If you're reading the material in Safari, you may find it easier to use the web page version of the manual rather than the PDF file, but this is all doable. However, I think it will be easiest for you to get started with this on your iPod Touch, since the controls and navigation are already familiar to you. This also means that I can get you started progressing more quickly with what you want to read. First of all, let me say that now, having actually downloaded the PDF version of the book, looked at the HTML version at the Apple Developer's Site URL that Barry gave, and downloaded the free ePub version of the book from iBooks, these are all the same book! So, if I go back to my original post that stated that since you mentioned in your introduction that you had an iPod Touch, you could download the free iBooks app onto your iPod Touch from the iTunes App Store and then find the free ebooks from the Apple Developer's connection there, this was perfectly true. On your iPod Touch, go to the following App Store URL for iBooks: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ibooks/id364709193?mt=8 If you read this post on your iPod Touch, you can open the link to go directly to the free iBooks app in your App Store. "Purchase" it by double tapping on the "Free" button, and supply your iTunes Store password to let it download. Then, from your iPod Touch: 1. Launch the iBooks app on your iPod Touch 2. When the app opens, double tap the "Store" button in the top right corner to go the store. 3. Double tap the "Search" button (4th of 5 buttons on the bottom of the screen). 4. In the search field at the top of the screen, double tap and enter "apple" using the virtual keyboard. If you move your finger down from the search text field, or alternatively if you flick past the "Clear text" and "Library" buttons to the list of results, you'll hear "Apple Inc." and then "Apple Developer Publications". 5. Double tapping on "Apple Developer Publications" will bring up a list of the 6 free publications in ePub format that can be read in the iBooks app. 6. Flick right to the 5th of these books, which will be "The Objective C Programming Language" and double tap. You can read reviews, etc. and the brief description of the book, but since you already know you want to get this book, just navigate (flick right) to the "Download" button and double tap. I'm going to paste in an excerpt from a recent viphone list post that describes how to use bookmarks and searching in iBooks. You can also use the Table of Contents to navigate to pages. If you want to read by characters or words, change your rotor setting and then flick up or down. Reading works pretty well if you're using a paired Bluetooth Keyboard, and you can use QuickNav keys to adjust the rotor (e.g., enter QuickNav mode by pressing the Right and Left arrow keys on your keyboard, then use the arrow keys in conjunction the command, control, and option keys to navigate.) From: Esther Date: April 19, 2011 Subject:Using iPhone User Guides in iBooks [was Re: What's that new command for changing screenpages] Hi Cher and Others, You can also get a copy of the User Guide for the iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad from iBooks. This is just the same version of the manual you can access under the bookmarks in Safari, but in ePub format. You have to download iBooks as a free app from the App Store, since it isn't loaded onto the device by default. Once you have launched iBooks, just go to the Store of iBooks and type "Apple Inc." into the search field. There are six user guides -- two each for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. If you want the one for the latest version of iOS, make sure the title is "iPhone User Guide for iOS4.2 and 4.3" (or "iPod Touch User Guide for iOS 4.3" or "iPad User Guide for iOS 4.3"), since there are also version of each guide for iOS 4.2 only. These are free, and you can download them onto your device. When you have opened the book, you can either use the search field or the table of contents to navigate to the section you want. For example, the buttons on the top of the screen are "Library", "Table of Contents", "Brightness", "Fonts", "Search", and "Add Bookmark". So I could flick to the "Search" button, double tap, then type in "VoiceOver gestures" into the search field. I'll get a list of matches to my search, listed in order of appearance, along with the page number and a bit of context. I can flick through the list of results, and double tap when reach the result I want. The main discussion of Voic

Re: oppinion: Apple Tracking
Hi Mike: I did in fact read somewhere, (and of course I don't remember the source), that all new cellphones are built with the tracking chip in them, and have been for a couple of years. I believe the initial idea was to help with tracing calls and/or catching criminal/terrorists. But, again, I don't recall where I read this. Really, there are so many ways anyone can get info on someone, it seems pointless to put this on Apple as having something so unique. As in the book 1984, "big brother is watching." Re: using iPod controls on iPhone without unlocking the phone
Hi Donna, As noted by Shameless, your iPhone screen has to be locked in order for you to access the iPod controls without unlocking the device. So either your screen is already locked, or you've pressed the sleep/wake button to lock it. Now, when you click once on the Home button you'll hear VoiceOver announce the time. At this point, if you just flicked right, you'd hear the date announced (e.g. "Saturday, April 23"). But if you now double click the "Home" button, the player controls will come up. On the iPhone or iPod Touch, flicking right from the time will now give you the buttons for "Previous track", "Play", "Next track", and "Airplay", followed by the "Volume" slider. On the iPad, subsequently double clicking the "Home" button takes me directly to the announcement of the "Volume" control. HTH. extremely frustrated re: reading pfd files
Hi all. I've ben trying all day to get various programs to work well reading PDFs on the Mac and have gotten no where fast. The programs I've tried are Adobe reader 10, Stanza, Skim, Preview, Safari, and Text Edit. These each have bugs that either make the document unreadable or difficult to read, or get hung up. Skim completely freezes when I reach the end of a page and forces me to close it out, which is unacceptable. Stanza does weird things with the spacing and makes the information incomprehensible. Safari doesn't let me interact with the text properly and insists on taking me to the very first page no matter what part of the file is visible when I try to interact with the text. Adobe is completely inaccessible. Text Edit just renders the file as garbage characters. Preview doesn't track my location properly when I read by line, so if I have to start reading by character, I'm completely lost there too. I don't wish to pay for a pdf to text converter because I don't have fond memories of such converters and I don't want to view the information as text. Is there a program out there for the Mac that reads PDF files, doesn't hang up or have quirky and distracting problems tracking the cursor, etc.? So far my experience with viewing pdf files on the Mac has been unhappy and worthy of 1 star. It's quite discouraging. I really, really don't want to have to read all my Objective C stuff on Windows machines. I'm at my wit's end with this and quite disappointed so far. quick way to turn off vo on apple tv?
Sorry for the cross post, but I wasn't really sure which list to post to, since it relates to an apple tv, not a Mac or an Iphone. anyway, I'm looking for a way to easily turn off VO, as with tripple click home on the IPod et al. I don't think there is such a way, but I want to make sure before I write accessibility at apple to ask for that feature. I have a couple reasons for wanting this. One is that my sighted spouse is not all that thrilled with hearing vo when he scrolls through things on the Apple tv, so he turns it off, and occasionally does not turn it back on, creating a problem for me, especially if he's not around when I discover the issue. My second reason is that I'd like to be ablt to toggle VO off when I'm streaming music to the Apple tv, i.e. using it like an airport express. I really do not need to hear the announcements from VO under such circumstances, regarding what ITunes song is playing or the fact that it is mary otten's mac mini etc. I really appreciate VO o the apple tv most of the time. But if I have guests over or even if it is just for myself that I have music playing, I don't need or want to hear VO loudly proclaiming song titles or other info, so a simple toggle to turn it on and off would be great. Is there one and I'm just not aware of it? Thanks. Mary Mary Otten motte...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Ricardo, If you stop and think about it the reality is you are being tracked in some fashion. COnsider when you use a debit/credit card, GPS device, electronic pass for rail or bus systems (that use such), and what about electronic toll devices and the like. The greater concern is how the data is used. There is a positive side to this of course as well. You might really want to know how to get a product locally and maybe you could through an ad etc. without doing a lot of research. Of course you might want to be alerted to a special deal on that really tasty beer. I'm more concerned about someone or company accessing my personal or financial data more so than knowing where I am. Two of the researchers, Alasdair Allan and Peter Warden of O'Reilly Media, presented their findings today at the Where 2.0 conference in Santa Clara, Calif. According to the story, the revelation raises "obvious privacy concerns and questions as to why Apple would be storing such information. The researchers believe it is intentional, as the file is restored after backups and even when the user switches to a new device." The group says the functionality is apparently new to iOS4, the mobile operating system that runs the latest iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The researchers have reportedly tried to contact Apple's security team but had yet to hear back from the company. The story reports: "Allan says that the existence of the file on on your computer is a security risk, as it is both unprotected and un encrypted. `It can also be easily accessed on the device itself if it falls into the wrong hands,' he wrote in a blog post. `Anybody with access to this file knows where you've been over the last year, since iOS4 was released.'" http://www.tvweek.com/blogs/tvbizwire/2011/04/researchers-say-apple-is-track.php http://api.recaptcha.net/noscript?k=6Lcb_78SAHmtN74lHVK-IOutZhLRidl4tCzl -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Safari Reader Question
Interesting guess My guess is that it either looks for html5 semantic elements indicating main article content, or that it uses a heuristic to determine which portion of the page represents the article. The researchers believe it is intentional, as the file is restored after backups and even when the user switches to a new device." Re: I've made peace with iTunes (mostly)
Hi Deborah and Others, The ilounge site is, indeed, the best source of general tutorials on iTunes, and I've previously posted some links to their tutorials. The web site is much easier to navigate with the mobile version of the site, because there are many graphics and ads. Here is the link to the list of tutorial articles and their links, including the guide to copying content to your iPod that you gave below, and I'll cc this to the macvisionaries list: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/tutorials/ For those who want to start with "The Beginner's Guide to iTunes". Here's the link to the mobile version of the article: • The Beginner’s Guide to iTunes by Jesse David Hollington (November 23, 2009): http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/mobile/articles/the-beginners-guide-to-itunes/ That guide contains links to many of the other guides to using iTunes and your device. The mobile version of • Copy Content from your iPod to your Computer -- The Definitive Guide (May 14, 2008) is at: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/mobile/articles/copying-music-from-ipod-to-computer/ You don't have to sign up for an account to navigate the mobile site. I keep a link to the mobile version of iLounge on my home screen, along with the link to the section of the HTML version of the iPhone (or iPod Touch, or iPad) user's guide that deals with VoiceOver. Here's the URL for the Mobile iLounge site: http://www.ilounge.com/mobile/ To add this or any other URL (such as the one for the iPhone user's guide) to your home screen, in Safari, double tap the "Utilities" button (on the iPhone or iPod touch, this is the third of five buttons on the bottom of your screen in Safari, and is directly above the "Home" button; on an iPad, this is the fifth button from first element of the screen: either use the four finger tap in the top part of the screen gesture to move to the first element, then flick right from the heading, or touch the first button in the top left corner and flick right from there). You'll be given the option to "Add to Home Screen" as one of the buttons. Double tap to add an icon for the URL to your home screen. This option will not appear if your home screen is entirely full, but most new users will not have acquired the hundreds of applications that cause this condition to apply, and will probably have learned to use folders before managing to reach this level , Alternatively, you could bookmark the link to an item like the page of tutorials given at the start of this post. Simply double tap the "Add Bookmark" button from the utilities options instead of "Add to Home Screen" and you'll create a bookmark in Safari. For completeness, and to avoid additional post queries, since I mentioned creating links to the accessible HTML versions of the user guides of the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, links to the current English language versions are: • iPhone User Guide: http://help.apple.com/iphone/4/voiceover/en/ * iPod Touch User Guide: http://help.apple.com/ipodtouch/4/voiceover/en/ • iPad User Guide: http://help.apple.com/ipad/4/voiceover/en/ I would navigate to the links for "Accessibility" and then "VoiceOver" before adding to my home screen, or target the section of particular interest (e.g. "VoiceOver Gestures", "Controlling VoiceOver with an Apple Wireless Keyboard", "Using a Braille Display with VoiceOver") before adding to your home screen. This topic was covered in my recent post on accessing information on commands in iBooks (including how to navigate there), so more information can be found in the archives. There are also some posts with links to the some of the ilounge tutorial guides for video content in the list discussions following the Apple TV introduction last fall that can also be found in the archives. Sorry to partially threadjack this post with other content. Incidentally, apologies for those who dislike the long links. I include the actual full URLs to web pages rather than linking to a description or shortened version for a few reasons. First, some mailers on other platforms do not "see" the link information correctly. Secondly, forwarding posts which contain such HTML (to plain text mode) also strips this information. Thirdly, if I make a typo or an extra space, it's possible to repair the error and recover the web site -- and usually there's enough information to Google the correct address. Fourthly, in most instances this means that I have checked the web page and copied the address directly from the address bar. While I occasionally give shortened links, I dislike the notion of sending people to web destinations that they can't verify. HTH. Re: Apple TV and streaming movies
Hi there. Thank you so very much for the response! Actually, we had already enabled homesharing and were able to see our music, but for some reason the movies were not available. Strangely enough though, after my husband converted another movie to the appropriate format and added it to our library, all of the other movies suddenly showed up. We have no idea what happened there, but I suppose I won't sweat it so long as it works. :-) So now we have our family library setup on a desktop with all of our movies and music, able to stream to the Apple TV, iPods or iPhones. I have a feeling this little device will more than pay for itself in short order. Hi, Mike. You write > Also, what people don't realize is that all smart phones do this, not just > apple. Android does, and most likely, blackberries do too. So, it's not just > an Apple thing. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "this", but you seem to be saying that Android and iOS are doing the same thing. With respect, I don't think this is correct, and would appreciate it if you could point out how you know this. the iOS system is logging all appearances of cellular towers, as well as more specific data when it can get it, since the install of the operating system. Android is, so far as I know, caching the last fifty unique towers connected to and the last 200 wireless network names/locations seen. Considering that there are many cellular towers and even more wireless networks in the average city, this cache may last anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks. If you back up your phone, the iOS log may last months if not years, and even if you don't back up your phone, the log may last months. Also, the iOS log identifies repeated appearances of the same towers. That is, if you go to work and then return home, the iOS log will log when you see the towers on the way to work and then will log those same towers again on the way back. The Android Cache will not do this. There is a great deal more of a legitimate use for the Android Cache than there is for the iOS log, as I understand it. If you have heard differently, I'd love to hear of it. Note that I am not able to verify what I've said above about Android, I don't have an Android device here to try with. What I'm saying is only what I've read. Aman On 4/23/11, Mike Arrigo wrote: > Also, what people don't realize is that all smart phones do this, not just > apple. Why would you make that leap? until yesterday, people didn't know android phones did it as well. I don't think one can say with certainty, just because Android and Apple collects this data that windows phone 7, Symbian, RIM, and web OS does the same. Re: oppinion: Apple Tracking
Yes, any platform can do this, and carrier, and app maker when you use that app. Even Wifi Hotspots report which devices connect to their hotspots. And thus anyone with the access to that information can see where you are. It's just something we'll all have to deal with in the current times. I really don't know what to think of it, it just is what it is. I guess if one is really worried about all this they could just stop using a smartphone, or computer when out in public. Re: apple tracking yyou?
Hello, Karen and James. The program you link to, Karen, is a viewer of the data collected by iOS 4.x. The source code for this program is available. The program I linked to, and which I suggested that people might wish to be weary of, is one to destroy the data as it is collected. Its source is not available. The two programs perform different functions, one being a viewer and the other a data deleter. If anyone knows of an open source application which deletes this file in the background, I'd love to hear of it. As to the rest of your messages, I find myself in some difficulty. I think privacy one of the most valuable things available to anyone. I am particularly saddened by the fact that, in this culture, nobody seems to care about it. I'm usually just told I'm paranoid and, believe me, it's great to see people who are upset about this sort of thing, and don't trot out the usual stupidities, saying that, if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about, or that there's nothing anyone can do, so why worry, or that it's all harmless anyhow. The facts are that everyone suffers when privacy is eroded, there's a great deal to do, and information collection is usually either actually or potentially dangerous. Having said that, I would still have to say that your conclusions go a great deal too far for the evidence available. Karen says As for evidence the file leaves the phone, consider this. Since apple does not tell you they are creating this file in the first place, why would they make the evidence easy to find? James says This honestly really ticks me off. Apple needs to be slammed with a law suit and lose big if they are doing this secretly. Think about it. Collecting this information to a file and not being forth coming about doing it or why? First, I do not see the secrecy here, I'm afraid. It is no secret that Apple is gathering location-based information. It should be rather obvious to anyone who has used any location-based service on the phone and, in any case, it is spelled out in the license agreement for the iPhone software, among other places, which says (b) Location Data . Apple and its partners and licensees may provide certain services through your iPhone that rely upon location information. To provide and improve these services, where available, Apple and its partners and licensees may transmit, collect, maintain, process and use your location data, including the real-time geographic location of your iPhone, and location search queries. The location data and queries collected by Apple are collected in a form that does not personally identify you and may be used by Apple and its partners and licensees to provide and improve location-based products and services. By using any location-based services on your iPhone, you agree and consent to Apple's and its partners' and licensees' transmission, collection, maintenance, processing and use of your location data and queries to provide and improve such products and services. You may withdraw this consent at any time by going to the Location Services setting on your iPhone and either turning off the global Location Services setting or turning off the individual location settings of each location-aware application on your iPhone. Not using these location features will not impact the non location-based functionality of your iPhone. When using third party applications or services on the iPhone that use or provide location data, you are subject to and should review such third party's terms and privacy policy on use of location data by such third party applications or services. My reading is that this section allows the collection of location-based information even in the case that no location based service is being used at any given time so long as the global location services setting is set to on in the settings app. That is, if you have that setting enabled in the settings app, Apple can collect information about your iPhone's location even if you're not using a service which requires location awareness at the time the location information is collected. I would also note that Apple specifically separates the idea of location data and location queries, and it wants both types of information. Again, it should not be a surprise that Apple is collecting this information, they said they would in their license. As I read this language, it means that, if Apple wanted the information, they could get every single cellular tower you connect to, and get it as soon as you connect to it. For all I know, this is precisely what they're doing. The fact that they can do this is deplorable, but for that, we may blame the folly of people who don't value their privacy. I would acquit Apple of the charge of secrecy. I would, however, convict them of stupidity and needlessly putting at risk the data of their users. This file is a moderate security risk because anyone with a USB cable and a modicum of brains can

Hi Jürgen Okay, What I do is just scroll to the end of the message with the attachment. I just hit the RETURN key on the name of the attachment and it will open. Another way If I don't want to read the whole message is just press Command+Y to view the attachment in Quick Look, and to save the attachment as a file on its own, I simply go to File->Save Attachments... and activate that. I don't know of a keystroke for VO for opening attachments, I hope some knowledgeable folk here might help with this one. Re: opening a pdf in page or edit text won't work.
Hi, You can only export to PDF when using Pages, otherwise Pages won't open PDF files. Why not try Skim? It would remember your last spot in a document such that you will simply start where you left off. As for Previiew doing what it is doing, I think before reading any document, make sure you are interacting with the text, otherwise Voiceover will be reading but when you try to read line by line, you will find that your keyboard focus will be somewhere different from what Voiceover was saying. Otherwise I think PreView is great. Well, if you're not satisfied, just try Skim or other Voiceover friendly apps. It doesn't seem to keep track of the cursor in the text of the document very well. I'd b much obliged if someone would help me yet again. Apple TV and streaming movies
Good day all! Okay, so my husband and I just purchased a new Apple TV, and so far, we love it! Streaming Netflix is absolutely awesome, and I love having so many choices of streaming internet radio stations to listen to. My question though, is concerning movies. Can one stream movies using airplay from an iTunes library on another machine? More specifically, can you stream movies that are not necessarily purchased from the iTunes store? We have a lot of movies that are currently in a format compatible with the iPod/iPhone, but when we attempt to view the list of movies using the Apple TV, it says it is unable to connect to movies in our library. It can access the music with no problem. Thank you in advance for any assistance you have to offer. :-) -- Jenny Wood Phone: (972) 989-3894 Email: kc5...@gmail.com Facebook/Twitter/Skype: kc5gni -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. That doesn't mean it isn't being sent out, but it does mean that people have looked and haven't found it being sent out yet. Secondly, the file is stored on both the phone and any computer which the phone has been backed up to. Therefore, encrypting backups on the computer might be worthwhile to avoid anyone with access to the computer being able to obtain the location information. Re: oppinion: Apple Tracking
Lol, Yes, I think you might be. :). I think one issue is knowing and consenting to being tracked. And its not so much apple you should worry about but, people inside and outside of apple that could get hold of such information. Even the government under some security act or another could force Apple to hand over that stuff. Who knows? But I don't think its a trivial matter. No Braille drivers for the latest IOS
Hi. Don't know if anyone can help. I had to reformat my phone due to Mobile Me not being able to work on my Iphone 4. This was a fresh install after a year of not doing a fresh install. When it came to pair my Essys Braille Display (it's a 40) display, I got a message to say that there were no braille drivers for this braille display. Does anyone know what I should do and if I can get braille drivers for the latest version of the I phone update? There were braille drivers in the last version of IOS. If anyone is having the same issue and has managed to get braille drivers from somewhere, please let me know. RTFD files are just rich text format with graphics, so unless any other appp was set to open it, it should open using TextEdit by default. Just press Command+O and TextEdit should load the document. Other alternatives could be just opening the context menu and navigate to "Open With" submenu and choose the appropriate app. This is only in case you want to use another program that associates itself with RTFD like Pages or Bean. Re: A Few Questions About My New iPAD2.
Hi Georges, You have to delete the device backup of the device that's not working. Well, every time you connect a device, iTunes tries to make a backup before any syncing, so go to your iTunes Preferences. Navigate to the Devices page and the first field you tab to should be "Backup". If you're on Mac, interact with this Backup table, otherwise on Windows just use the Up and Down arrow keys to locate the offending backup. The names of the backups will be the same as the name of your device, so just highlight the one you wish to remove. Then tab to "Remove" button and the device settings in the backup will be deleted. Re: mud clients
There's an Ios mud client that works really well with VoiceOver called, TMC Game Client. Of course, there are no sfx for it, but it's really easy to read the output and keep up. I heard something like Atlantis or something like that was the name of the Mac one. It does kinda work from my vague memories of it, but it's not really a viable solution yet. I actually enjoy playing muds on my iPhone so long as I have the bluetooth keyboard with it. Otherwise it can be a bit slow. mud clients
I know this has been gone over before and I had the email but it seems to have disappeared somewhere in space. For now which client works with the Mac? I know there's one that sort of works with voiceover. Wanted to give it another try to see if maybe something out there works now. Getting really tired of using my windows computer.
