RE: Lion 10.72 is now available.
Um.. I don't know how that song got attached to my previous post. Am very, very confused. If it went through, and you like it, I guess that's OK, but I didn't attach anything deliberately. I wonder if my computer is possessed! I'm tripple checking this message, and there definitely are not any attachments at the time I'm hitting send. If another one goes through, then I guess I've got problems I need to investigate once I've had sleep. Anyway, sorry for any confusion; I'm definitely not trying to cause any problems, and even without the song, I stand by my comments about lion. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Missy Hoppe Sent: Thursday, October 13, 2011 2:31 AM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Lion 10.72 is now available. I agree. I think the com.apple.doc.extra thing may have been resolved, but VO running at start-up seems to be hit or miss now, and I certainly can't find any other improvements that make me want to officially switch to Lion. I also noticed that Pianopub still isn't read accurately under lion while it reads great in snow leopard. In fact, the only thing I like better in lion than snow leopard is the way skype contacts are read. I have no clue what the difference is; so far as I can tell, I'm running the same version of skype under both operating systems, but it just reads slightly better under lion; none of those favorites checkboxes and stuff. Apart from that, though, I still have absolutely no desire to run lion, and will continue using Snow Leopard as long as it works and meets my needs. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Shawn Krasniuk Sent: Wednesday, October 12, 2011 11:57 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Lion 10.72 is now available. Re: writing to NTFS drives under Lion?
I installed a little program that somehow enabled it to work. I don't recall what this program is called, nor do I know where it resides on my mac. If I did, I'd remove it and try reinstalling it. It was discussed on this list though. One was MacFuse, and the other was something I don't remember, but I think that was the one I used. Re: More issues with option click.
Hey. I had the exact same problem. You have to disable VoiceOver when you do the actual click. So go to the button, route with Vo-Command-F5, then disable VoiceOver with Vo-f5. Wait a moment, then hold down the option key and click on the lower left corner of the trackpad. Then release and reload VoiceOver and hopefully it will have worked. A little harrowing. - Austin On Oct 12, 2011, at 8:40 PM, Allison Mervis wrote: > Hi everyone. > I'm attempting to update to iOS5 by means of an IPSW file. Re: bookmarks
I think this was described in a previous email in the archive but the basic steps are to open the bookmarks page with commnad-option-b and then in the first table interact with that to choose which set of bookmarks you want to edit such as Bookmarks Bar, Bookmars Menu etc. I most often am adding or removing items in the bookmarks bar since those get keyboard shortcuts to activate (Command-1 for the first bar mark etc). Anyway, once you've done that then stop interacting with the table then navigate right a few times to a second table which will list all the bookmarks you have. Interact with that and then you can arrow up and down to inspect the bookmark rows. When you find one you don't want just hit delete and it's gone. Re: pages documents
Hello Matthiew, Placeholder text is text that disappears as soon as you start typing over it. It's used to show the layout of a document. When creating templates, I make all replaceable text, placeholder text, but I enter it in the format that should be used. So, for instance, in a template for an APA-style document, I give examples of the various formats for references, and the user can navigate into this text which is then highlighted, and copy it into another document where it can be referred to. The creators of the included templates put fake Latin as placeholder text. Re: program my husband wrote
Hi Ben. I may not have explained very well. I'm not needing a total line count for the whole file. What I meed to do is to know what print page, what braille page, and what line number a given mistake I find is located on if it were brailled on a braille printer. That way, I don't have to count the things. I don't know if you're a braille reader, so forgive me if I say something that you already know. When a transcriber produces a brf file bewh stands stands for braille ready file), the file is done like a print to file only it's a braille to file. If i don't have a program, then I have to roll the braille up until the print page number is on the display and then start counting the lines. That's why I don't need a line count for the entire file because the line numbers start over when a page break is encountered. Having said all that, does that still mean that Apple Script is what's needed? Regards, Gigi On Oct 12, 2011, at 11:39 AM, Ben Mustill-Rose wrote: > No way. Re: pages documents
Hello Gigi, To create tables with different width columns, you have to use Numbers then select the cells you want to copy, press Cmd-C and paste the table into your Pages document. Pages with VO can only create equal-width columns. I have to use Pages all the time as I'm a translator, and get MS Word documents to translate. The vast majority of the time, everything works great, it's just text boxes that cause trouble, because Pages puts them all at the end of the document. Re: playing iphone video on a normal tv
While I haven't tried it, there is also an iPhone/iPad to VGA adapter: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC552ZM/B?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY Main limitation with all of these it the apps have to support it. So video players like the ones that ship with the phone are usually fine but it's not video mirroring. SCART is pretty much a European analog video connector created in the 70s so direct support for it will probably be unlikely. You might be able to find a VGA to SCART adapter since SCART will handle RGB, but then it's not clear what resolution and scan rate. No idea if this works on BRF files, but you can display the line count in a file by running `wc -l ` in Terminal. Example: wc -l ~/Documents/Report1.txt As Ben has already mentioned, Apple Script could indeed be useful to either you or your husband in this case. The WC command could even be ran from a script if you don't want to execute it manually. -- James Scholes http://twitter.com/JamesScholes -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. program my husband wrote
Hi guys. This is not a sales announcement or anything. My husband wrote this program for me which right now runs under Windows. He used to write custom programs for small businesses for both the Apple 2 and the PC. I got tired of counting lines and finding page numbers in brf files. As a proofreader, I have to do reports and turn that information into transcribers. I'm not wild about installing Windows on my Mac just to run this program. Excuse my ignorance here, but if he were to rewrite the program like it was going to run on the old Apple 2, would it run under Lion? I know that may sound weird, but if he had a 2 E here he would be able to write programs for it, so I thought I would find out if that knowledge could be used to rewrite this program without a lot of trouble. If not, I can either put Windows on here or do this some other way. Regards, Gigi -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: skype for mac and listening to voicemail
Find the name of the person who sent the voice mail; it will either be in the the table right below the tool bar or, if it's very old, in the history list table. Select it and press Enter to exit the tables and go back to the main window. Find the HTML content frame and interact with it. VO right until you find the "play or stop voice mail button." Click it. That should start the playback. Hi Anne. Have I missed something here, but are not the templates in Pages images unless you create them yourself? If they are images, can you change them so that they are text? Re: playing iphone video on a normal tv
Hi, You'd probably get better responses if you posted this on viPhone. To answer your question though, if you have an iPhone 4 then you can get an Apple adapter that lets you convert the 30 pin doc connector into hdmi. For older devices you can get third party component out adapters which should do what you want, but Apple are quite picky about what will work and what doesn't. I have a belkin one for my 3GS which I've only ever used once actually and it seemed to work well enough. I'm not sure what the 3GS outputs at, but I'm guessing it wouldn't look amazing on a large screen - my iPad 2 does upto 720P, compared to DVD's which are only 480. Cheers, Ben. skype for mac and listening to voicemail
Dear listers, I just noticed that I have voicemail from skype. I turned it on, and I thought I would get a notification inside Skype if a new voicemail arrives. However, I now see that, on my spambox, I have a message from skype saying I received a new voicemail from a list member here. I looked into skype to find how to play voicemails, but I don't know how to do it. Closest I got was in the history list. At the end of September, I got this voicemail message, but trying to bring up a context menu on a history list item won't let me listen to the voicemail in question. Re: iclaude and winxp
My understanding of iCloud is it is a set of APIs and backend systems to store and sync media between different devices. I would have to assume that just for supporting this on iTunes for Windows Apple will have to port and allow developers on Windows to integrate it into their apps. Specific to your question, XP was discontinued last year after being released in August 2001. I doubt Apple or anybody is going to be putting effort into developing anything new for that platform. You can't even buy it except for the clearance stores that still have inventory. Having just looked for a copy of XP, like getting a copy of OSX 10.5, these places figure you must be desperate to want to buy a copy of XP and so they charge accordingly. While iTunes currently supports Windows XP, I wouldn't be surprised if that gets bumped off or has exceptions for iCloud down the road. It's a conundrum for app developers because up until October last year XP was still 50% of the internet web users but as of July of this year Win7 finally passed XP and currently sits at 42% while XP is at 36%. This according to w3schools stats: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_os.asp Nice to see the Mac climbing and currently showing at 8.6%. Of course w3schools caters to a more techie crowd so stats might be skewed. Gartner shows Mac at 10.7% and the #3 Q2 shipper of machines (1.8M) after Dell (3.8M) and HP (5.4M). Apple grew market share 8.5% over the last 12 month period while Dell slipped 9.8% and HP 1.2%. http://www.macrumors.com/2011/07/13/apple-soars-to-third-place-in-u-s-pc-market-with-10-7-share/ Curious what the Q3 numbers are. Re: pages documents
Hi Ann, Very clear. So, to enter plain text with only blank lines between paragraphs, there is no downside to stick with text edit? Do you happen to know if, just like notepad does in windows, text edit prints the filename as header on each paper page when you print your document? Wordpad just prints the text in windows, but notepad also makes a heading of the filename the document came from, which can be undesirable. Does text edit do this, that you know of? Or can I safely print out a document I wrote without the filename being made into a page header in text edit? Paul. Hello Paul, A template can save you a lot of work. You can, for instance, have a template for personal letters and another for business letters. Tabs on the web
Hi folks How do I change tabs in the browser? oI don't mean the tabs for sites, but for example in Google+ when clicking on "circles", there appears 3 tabs, one for people I've added, one for people who have added me and a last one for people I might know. The same kind of tabs have I seen on iCloud.com. Hope someone could help. Regards David -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Editing audio files
Hi Marco, Amadeus is wonderful. Especially its batch converter is amazing. Not only can you convert from one file format to the other, with all your options for the target format in place such as tag info and even album art, but it also lets you perform file operations during the conversion. For example, say you have 16 songs, and you would like to create a summary of each of them. Itunes does that, to allow you to preview them before buying. Amadeus can do that in a few seconds. You open the batch converter, in the first tab sheet you tell amadeus to which new file format you want to convert, and you set its options, and in the second tab, you can create a list of actions, that amadeus will carry out from top to bottom. The order in which the actions appear in this list can be important, depending on what you're doing. After pressing an add button next to the actions list, you can choose what you want to do. Say you want to cut off the first 30 seconds, because you want your summary file to begin there, and not at the song intro. Then you tell amadeus to move ahead 30 seconds, which is one minute into the time line of the song, and cut off everything from there to the end. This leaves a chunk of audio, from 30 seconds into the song, lasting half a minute. Now, the second action could be to perform a nice fade in and out at the beginning and end. It's not difficult, you just select what you want and read the manual. After you have your fades in place in the actions list, you could also normalize the chunk, and then pass it to the encoder. The possibilities are not endless but they are impressive. It can save you a lot of manual loading, editing, saving etc, if you let the batch converter do it for you. One thing to be aware of when starting to play around with amadeus, is that you have 2 different cursors running along the time line of the sound file. One is the play head, just like you had with old tape recorders, and the other is the insertion point. So, stopping playback somewhere, will always require you to first get the insertion point over to the play head, because otherwise, you won't edit as you intend. Hth, Paul. Re: shutting down with lion
Hi Craig, Yes all apps must be closed before you can shut down. I had a similar issue that was nagging me, and the solution was to use the voiceover application chooser, to find out what was running. I discovered that a program was still running, that I was not aware of. Moreover, this program had a window on screen asking me to type my password, because the program wanted to make changes. I don't know which changes, so every time it happens I hit cancel and I don't provide my password for it. But when I want to shut down, this window asking me to confirm changes to be made, is sometimes still open, and using the vo app chooser, you can find out if something similar on your machine is the case, close it, and shut down again. Re: problem withinstalling braille display drivers in bootcamp
Hi Iona, Did you check to see if the driver location on disk that you are browsing to, does contain .sys and/or .cat files? I've had this problem as well, and it usually means that I need to go one more level down the folder tree, like into a folder x86, 32-bit or something similar. Hth, Paul. iclaude and winxp
Hello, I was wondering if there is or there will be a way to use iclaude on a winxp computer? I have red that Apple , same as Microsoft, only should support vista and win7 from now. But, perhaps there are or will be some third party solutions to solve this problem.
