when I press CMD + Option + right or left bracket nothing happens. Do you mean
the left or right bracket what I can reach by pressing Shift + 9 or 0 on an

Thought some may enjoy this tip.
When you are reading messages in Apple Mail, you can switch between available
alternative formats, like HTML and plain text or a hybrid of both, by
pressing CMD+OPT+left or right brackets while inside the message.
I find this especially useful with complex HTML messages or when reading
digests from discussion lists like this one.
Basically, open a message and then press CMD+OPT+left or right brackets to
 move between available format alternatives.
 Very cool!

Hello,
Perhaps this is not new but I have discovered that google chrome is fully

I am new to that browser and I was wondering if there are

Also , if there are other/better browsers for us on the mac, it would be nice

Re: a list of accessible apps?

2012-01-10 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello Johnny,

Perhaps I am a coward, but I almost always try to do website registrations on
my Mac or PC instead of on my iPhone. I still find data entry via the iPhone
slow, unreliable and cumbersome. This is not the fault of the Accessibility
team at Apple; I am perhaps just somewhat uncoordinated. :)

Good luck with the site, Johnny,

Mac Sword however is another thing. The program is now called Eloquent. As
of a couple of months ago, it was not easly accessible with VO. But to be
fair, I haven't looked at it recently. Perhaps there's been a recent update
 that fixes it's inaccessibility issues.

As for a good, accessible Bible program for the I-Phone, Youversion looks
promising. The problem I have encountered is the troubling inaccessibility
of the registration process via the I-Phone. I understand that the work

William,
Wow, it turns out that I was an 11.0.x build. Discovering that I was so far
back encouraged me to update to the latest dev build. This version of Chrome is
so much faster with Voiceover than I remember, and the quirks I previously saw
seem to be gone. Thank you very much for the suggestion. I think this may
indeed be a good alternative to Safari. now if only I could find an extension
to change my user agent for m.facebook.com I'd be a happy camper.

Now you can save it as a Pages document, a pdf or a Word document to your Mac.

Your assumption is sort of correct. The problem arises when attempting to

method and saving it to your Mac. The process is more or less seamless if
you go from iDevice to iDevice or from Mac to Mac. From Mac to iDevice is
not too difficult but a little more cumbersome when going from iDevice to

 Hi,

Moving the files from your Mac to iCloud is reasonably painless. The
complications arise when going from your iDevice back to the Mac. If
you are running Lion, and have subscribed to iCloud, then there is a

This folder is what iCloud uses to share documents. If you are
wishing to simply use the files between two Macs that both are
registered to the same iCloud account, then simply create a folder in
this folder and drop the files you wish accessed by both Macs into it.
These files will now be easily accessed by each Mac registered to your
iCloud account. Make any changes to the file while it's in that folder
and it will more or less instantly be changed within iCloud and thus
 changed on your other Mac.

Now, the complication I mentioned has to do with opening the file
within Pages on your iDevice. If you place a Word, Pages or a few
other document types into the Documents folder in the com~apple~pages

and translated into mobile Pages. then it can be accessed and
manipulated using Pages on any other iDevice you've registered within

Re: a rather difficult question about converting e-mail

2012-01-10 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
more than happy to help.

It's pretty simple.

depending on whether your email provider has it's own saved folder or work, etc
you can drop those emails to the directory, then open mail in mac, build your
account, then when it's up and running, your emails should come accross. if
not, then it's time to make another email acount and export the enails through
copy and paste to the other account and then create the 2nd account in mail,
then drag the important emails to your current email account.

sorry if it sounds a little confusing. if you get stuck, email me at

if not, there's plenty of us here who can assist.

Re: A truly frustrating issue

2012-01-10 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
the sequence mentioned resets PRAM. this stores bootup memory and some other
settings including date and time, etc. basically because of the way the
firmware behaves, there can be the odd conflict so firmware rebuilding helps.

if you're using a PowerPC chip, there's also another setting to repair. NVRAM
through open firmware.

as you're about to boot, hold down command option O and F. (open firmware)

(this is an advanced procedure and should be undertaken WHEN NECESSARY)

when open firmware starts, you will be greeted by a text interface.

type the following
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all

it's worth noting here that with each instruction, please press enter. on the
final instruction, enter should restart the system.

through copy and paste to the other account and then create the 2nd account
in mail, then drag the important emails to your current email account.

This has nothing to do with what folders are contained in your email account.
What you are describing is the difference between IMAP and POP3 access to a
mailbox. If you use IMAP on all of your devices, folders, messages etc. will
all stay in sync. For instance, I use Mozilla Thunderbird which has a very
handy feature to create an archive of important messages. These messages are
organised automatically by year, and stored in folders under my email account.
Thus, when I access that same account in Mail on the Mac, Mail on the iPhone or
any other client that supports IMAP, I can access those message archives. Were
I to use POP on any or all of my devices, none of them would be in sync with
each other.

This isn't a difficult question at all. Moving email to a new computer is, I'm
sure, quite a common problem for many and there are a couple of solutions.
Personally, I would recommend that you do the following:

1. Open up the email client on your Windows computer.
2. Locate the messages that you wish to copy over to the Mac.
3. Export (or save) them as mbox format files (the specific instructions for
doing this differ from client to client so you'll need to tell us which email
software you're using on Windows if you want us to help you). Make sure you
know where you have saved the mbox files.
4. Copy the exported messages to your Mac computer, again making sure to put
them in a location you will remember.
5. Open up Apple Mail and select Import Mailboxes from the File menu.
6. Choose mbox files from the Import data from: list, then click Continue.
7. Locate the files you copied to your Mac in step 4.

Re: a rather difficult question about converting e-mail

2012-01-10 Thread Denise Barajas
That's a lot more hassle. I would like to simply find a way to transfer these
e-mails to an external or some removable medium, convert these to whatever form
the Mac will recognize for the mail client and simply get rid of those
programs. It's either that or I have to switch out systems, as these are both
desktop computers and I would simply not have to have the windows machine
connect to the internet. If you have skype, please write me privately and we
can have a chat to better understand each other with this query. Thanks, and

Effectively navigating through edit fields on iPhone with Bluetooth keyboards

2012-01-10 Thread Michael Busboom
I have recently acquired a Bluetooth keyboard with a tiny docking station to
use with my iPhone 4 running IOS5.

While it is easy enough to enter text into an edit field, via the Bluetooth
keyboard, I have been unable to cursor or arrow through a text that I am
creating in order to insert or delete characters. Thus far, I have
accomplished this task by moving the insertion point using the VoiceOver
commands on the touch screen. I am wondering if there is a way to move through
an edit field, character-by-character using the right and left arrow keys on
the small Bluetooth keyboard. Fortunately, the backspace key is working.
Besides working with edit fields, are there other ways to invoke most VO
commands using the keyboard instead of the VO gestures?

Thank you all very much,

Mike

getting my contacts from a windows smartphone to my mac?

2012-01-10 Thread Eric Oyen
ok,
I need to figure out how I can get my contact off my windows smartphone sim
card and into my mac's address book. anyone have any ideas on how to do this?

also, the smartphone uses activeSynch to backup a copy on t-mobile's website in
my user account. however, since t-mobile's website is largely inaccessible to
me using voiceover, I have no way of getting to that online contact list. any
help with this would be greatly appreciated.

When I needed to transfer my contacts from my HTC Ozone to my Mac, I use the
bluetooth connection.

For me, this was the easiest. Turned bluetooth on for both devices, made a
connection, then beamed the contacts on over.

ok,
I need to figure out how I can get my contact off my windows smartphone sim
card and into my mac's address book. anyone have any ideas on how to do
this?

also, the smartphone uses activeSynch to backup a copy on t-mobile's website
in my user account. however, since t-mobile's website is largely
inaccessible to me using voiceover, I have no way of getting to that online
contact list. any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Clearwire internet? Is it any good?

2012-01-10 Thread Emrah
Hello,

If you have a nice return policy, you could always test it.
The fact is that cellular broadband is not as reliable as wired Internet,
whether it is a landline DSL or cable.
4g might give you better bandwidth than what you currently have, but it depends
on a lot of factors.
Also, although 4g is a tremendous progress on cellular broadband, it will still
add on latency when compared to landlines or cable connections. If you use
Skype or any other VoIP service provider, it's most certainly not recommended.

Regards,
Emrah

Re: a rather difficult question about converting e-mail

2012-01-10 Thread André Nuno Soares
Hello,

If you are using GMail with IMAP then you probably have those messages stored
on GMail' servers.
You can confirm this by going to GMail's Web interface and looking for the
messages.

If you find them, you don't need to worry with copying messages to the Mac.
Just configure your GMail account on the Mac and they'll be automatically
available there.

Re: A truly frustrating issue

Hi,

It's not VO+p+r, it is cmd-+option+p+r. I usually use my left thumb across the
cmd and option keys then my left index and right pinky for the r and p
respectively. What it does is clears out your memory so that any residual
stuff that has, for whatever reason, remained clogging up your memory, is sent
off into la la land. This process helps quite often when Macs are behaving
erratically. It is also suggested by Apple as a next step in certain
troubleshooting situations. For example, the Restart is suggested first then
the Clear PRAM next, when troubleshooting power issues.

Re: to do list apps

2012-01-10 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Becky,

My recommendation would be list recorder. You could do your to do
lists as either recordings or as a text list as List Recorder does both. It
also now has do dates available. I suspect you might find it useful in
additional ways for your classes. I use List recorder to organize everything
from recorded lectures and meetings to lists of groceries. The app is about
$10.00 and is not only voice Over friendly but designed with voice over as a
priority.

I use this app a lot and it has the priority spot in my dock.

Best.

 Hi All,
I am taking 5 graduate level courses this semester and all of them require a

would function like a to do list but for assignments that I could check off
after they are done? I guess what I am looking for is kind of like a homework
planner. I just want to make sure I don't miss out on doing all my
assignments, I already put their due dates in my calendar which was the first
time I used Ical. it was interesting experience but I figured it out.

Blackboard and Voice-over?

2012-01-10 Thread Shanna Stichler
Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has attempted using Blackboard with VO, and whether or
not it worked for you. It seems semi-accessible, so I thought it would be good
to check with this list. I'm using Blackboard version 9.1, I believe. If anyone
can give me some tips for working within this site, I'd greatly apreciate it.

Thanks so much for all your help.

Shanna

Tim how does one know if the procedure actually worked when executing all of

 Hi,

You don't actually need the keys down when you turn on the power button.
Simply press the power button, quickly get your hands/fingers in place, then
press the cmd+option+p+r as the startup chime sounds.

 Hi,

It's not VO+p+r, it is cmd-+option+p+r. I usually use my left thumb across
the cmd and option keys then my left index and right pinky for the r and
p respectively. What it does is clears out your memory so that any
residual stuff that has, for whatever reason, remained clogging up your
memory, is sent off into la la land. This process helps quite often when
Macs are behaving erratically. It is also suggested by Apple as a next
step in certain troubleshooting situations. For example, the Restart is
suggested first then the Clear PRAM next, when troubleshooting power
 issues.

Just what exactly does that sequence do when used as you describe?

 Hello Richard,

One thing that hasn't yet been suggested is initialising the PRAM. To do
this, shut down your machine, then hold down the Command, Option, letter
P and letter R keys and press the Power key. Keep holding down the four
keys until you've heard the start up chime at least 3 times. Then release
them and the machine will boot as usual.

This procedure can cure all kinds of strange behaviour.

 Cheers,

 Anne

Re: Blackboard and Voice-over?

2012-01-10 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello Shanna,

Although many portions of the Blackboard platform can be navigated with VO
through Safari, there is one area that is difficult and, as far as I am
concerned, inadequately accessible.

I am referring to the discussion areas where students interact with one another
and their teachers. I believe that Blackboard calls this area their Bulletin
Board area. While I am not saying that it is impossible to use the Bulletin
Board, I am stating that it is difficult. I have suspended my graduate studies
until Blackboard has properly addressed this issue. It was possible for me to
look at class syllabi and download class lectures, however. My university also
uses Blackboard version 9.1.

Although I cannot confirm this, I have heard that it is possible to fully
access the Bulletin Board with Google's Chrome browser, but I have been unable
to confirm this since I don't know how to go about installing Chrome on my Mac.

Kindest regards,

Mike
