Re: iTunes Match and iOS

Hmmm. This is totally not what I'm seeing. So either they are redoing how
songs are managed on the iPhone, or they managed to break accessibility in the
update (either of these are possible). I suppose it's off to the forums where
I can speak freely about such things then ...

So I just turned on iTunes Match and am in the process of uploading my
entire library. One thing I'm noticing, though: It appears that VoiceOver
doesn't actually see the cloud icon next to songs, artists or albums that
indicate their status as "in the cloud" vs. locally downloaded.
Further, I'm not entirely sure I can see an option to remove synced music
from my phone once downloaded. Is there a workaround I'm missing due to
my expectation that the way to do things that is listed in most
 walkthroughs actually works with VoiceOver?

Re: Very Disappointed with Mountain Lion

2012-08-05 Thread Chris Meredith
I'll admit I was a little astounded at what actually worked on the Mac side.
I've a machine with both platforms, as 1) I work in Windows CE, which Xcode
oddly enough fails to develop for, 2) there are still some things that tend to
work better on Windows (Remote Desktop being one such), and 3) my colleagues
use Office, and I don't trust documents to make a round trip from Office to
Pages to Office again and keep all of their schmancy formatting intact.
Oh--and 4) my networked three-tuner CableCard device doesn't let me watch
encrypted TV (ie. HBO and such) on the Mac. Having said that, I've seen some
"Web 2.0" sites (God I hate that term) that actually seem to work better with
Safari 6, Mountain Lion and VoiceOver than they do on Windows.

But then, aren't we beginning to see some of this with Trackpad Commander in

I can confirm that Safari seems to handle larger web pages significantly better
(I used blindcooltech.com as my test page, since it still continues to be a
mass of text, links and headings that go on for miles). I am noticing some
oddities with some table navigation on one site in particular that made me head
back to my Windows installation where it worked, however.
Specifically, if you go to www.kingdomofloathing.com, create a character, go to
Seaside Town, Market Square, Mr. Store, and attempt to buy something, not all
of the elements appear visible to VoiceOver. I'll ... I'll file this on
bugreport.

Re: Very Disappointed with Mountain Lion

2012-08-05 Thread Chris Meredith
Just some thoughts from someone who's actually in software development
professionally.
Even if you're convinced that the beta testers have found a bug and that Apple
is squashing it, report it anyway. Occasionally, it helps set bug priority if
developers know how many people are seeing the bug. Something that is only
occasionally reproduceable and has been reported only once or twice is not
going to get the same priority as something that's easily reproduceable and
affects thousands.
Bug reports do not need to contain effusive praise. Yes, Apple has included a
free screen reader in-box. Odds are they already know this. Not heaping
praise upon them for what they have done will not, as I've heard some speculate
(though not on this list) cause them to, let's face it, waste months and months
of developer hours, break contracts with third party providers, and delay their
next release just to remove VoiceOver and give those blind ingrates a spanking.
We're usually a thick-skinned bunch, and I can assure you that no bug I've
encountered, even when reported by external customers, has contained a hymn of
praise.
What we do like is steps you went through to reproduce the bug. This includes
"enable VoiceOver", possibly even including how to do so. If nothing else, it
may save the developer who has never used VoiceOver in their lives a bit of
time by looking up the key sequence in whatever internal knowledge base Apple
uses. I've even gone so far when filing iOS bugs as to reproduce the bug on
camera for them, attaching it as a QuickTime movie. Even with the company I
work for and the people that contract us, bug reports occasionally contain
screenshots. Again--if you can't provide screenshots or demos, detailed repro
instructions will work just as well. Soapbox mode off. And no, I am not an
Apple employee although, in the interest of full disclosure, I did previously
work for the other guys over in Redmond. And no, our bug reports also didn't
include how much our external customers ostensibly hated our products and
wanted us destroyed, either.

2012-08-05 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Art,

I wonder if there is just something changed in your system Preferences. In
Lion, Apple introduced something called Natural Scrolling where scrolling
happens the opposite to the way we were accustomed to in previous versions of
the MacOS. I know for sure that this messed up many of us who use Trackpad
scrolling and I'm wondering if it affects mouse scrolling as well. I don't
have a mouse handy at home here as all my machines have Trackpads or Magic
Trackpads. In the system Preferences, in the Trackpad pane there is a checkbox
that I have unchecked for Natural Scrolling. There may be the same sort of
option in the Mouse pane of System Preferences. My guess is that if you
uncheck it, your mouse should go back to what you're accustomed to.

HTH.

Re: Doesn't Anyone else use Web Spots in Safari?

2012-08-05 Thread Tim Kilburn
Thanks for reporting it Brian. As I mentioned earlier, if both the Help Viewer
and VO Keyboard Practice say that it is to go the way you expect, then it
certainly is a bug. Reporting it is the best way to address it. Simply
creating a new key combination yourself doesn't help the new users. It needs
to work properly.

Re: Preview versus skim?

2012-08-05 Thread Dan Roy
Esther:

Thanks vary much for this resource, it's most appreciated. It does definitely
have more options.

unfortunately, it didn't eliminate the 1 big problem I am having with Preview.

After interacting with the text and then trying to read through the file, I am
getting words that appear to be split by either a space or a hard return.

So, the word review might come out as re view. This happens all the time and
is quite annoying. I have played with all the viewing options and can't seem
to eliminate this issue. It seems like it first reared up in Lion and has
continued in the mountain version. if you or anyone else has any ideas on
this, I would appreciate some help if possible, thanks.

I make use of setting webspots and sweet spots on the pages I go to a

of my webspots have been reversed in mountain lion. what I mean is to
scroll down from the top to the bottom of the page in previous
versions I would hit VO Command right bracket to go to the next web
spot to the right, and VO command left bracket to go to the next web
spot to the left. Simple. In Mountain it is completely reverse which
is one of the most annoying thing as when I click VO command righ
bracket it takes me to the next web spot to the left and VO command
left bracket to the next web spot to the right. This makes no sense
what so ever, and I am wondering if it is a setting that I have set
incorrectly for navigating a page. I tried turning scrolling from
normal to not clicking normal and this did nothing. This setting was
under the Track pad. I don't even have a mouse connected, so maybe the
setting is in that menu, as I can't even access the mouse menu since
my system doesn't detect a mouse. Has anyone else experienced this? I
am so used to where all of my web spots are set this is so
frustrating. I even tried removing my web spots on a page and
resetting them, but this didn't change the directions. It would make
sense you click right and you go right you click left and you go left,
but not in Mountain Lion. Would appreciate any help. Thanks

Re: office headset?

2012-08-05 Thread Emrah
There is no office headset that can do that.
At least not from Jabra, Plantronics or Sennheiser.

You have 3 solutions I can recommend:
1. Either get 2 simple mono headsets, one plugged to the phone, one to the
computer. Not very elegant.
2. Get a Plantronics Savi or Jabra Pro and make sure it can mix the audio both
from the Telephone line and the computer via USB.
3. Ask your system admin to hook you to the company's VoIP system if they use
it. Then get yourself a nice USB headset and you'll be able to use your
computer as a phone and still hear VoiceOver fine.
If your company uses SIP, then you have quite a few accessible softphones out
there. The easiest being Telephone.

E

Re: adium verses trillion?

2012-08-05 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Cliff. For Facebook, I think Trillion is better than Adium. What I like
about it is not only can you chat on Facebook, but Trillion also monitors your
contacts' news feeds and if you have Growl set up for it to run with speech,
it'll automatically read them. I haven't tried it with my MSN and Aim but when
my SamNet subscription expires and I have to use apps that are already
installed on my Mac, I will eventually switch my accounts to Trillion. But as
the previous lister has said, it's all about preference.

Re: dictation help

2012-08-05 Thread Caitlyn and Nickels
Heya, Mark! Thanks bunches! With help from you and my husband, I got this
thing to work, sorta! It messes up email addresses, but that's to be expected,
I supposes! I guess it gets better over time, though.. speakable items, well,
I don't expect to be useing that much, anyway, really, like you said, mostly a
fun thing, really, except the time thing.

Thanks,

RE: VO behaving weird on iPhone... How to solve that?

2012-08-05 Thread Shen
Try closing apps in the app switcher.
I've found that if there are too many apps running in the background, it can
slow down VoiceOver.
I make it a habit of clearing out my apps that I don't use.
Restarting your phone is not much of a solution because the apps remain in
the app switcher. To restart your phone more effectively, close all the apps
in the app switcher, then restart it.

Hi folks.

Sometimes after long use, VoiceOver is behaving weird on my iPhone.
When reading long sentences, VO stops reading, and I can't get it to read
everything.
For example on Twitter or on Facebook where there can be a bit longer posts,
VO reads the first part, and I can't get it to read the whole thing.
If I flick to the right, it reads the next.

I've only found two ways to solve this:
1. After flicking through lots of Facebook posts in the newsfeed or Twitter
messages, VO stops speaking.
Then I have to lock the phone, and wait a few minutes.
After that, VO works as it should.
2. Reboot the phone.

Anyone here who have a more efficient solution to this?

Thanks in advance.

enabling backspace as delete key in Safari

2012-08-05 Thread Rachel Feinberg
Hi all,

There was a thread recently in which people were discussing how the backspace
key no longer worked to go back a page in Safari 6.
I've just stumbled upon an article thanks to twitter, that tells how to
re-enable the backspace key in Safari, and also how to get the RSS button back.
Here's the website that explains all:
http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/05/return-safari-6-delete-key-functionality-to-go-back-a-page/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+osxdaily+%28OS+X+Daily%29
Hope that helps,
Rachel

RE: adding contacts to groups?

2012-08-05 Thread Paul Hunt
Hello Ray. You can streamline this task a little.

1. Interact with the group names table.

2. 2. Find the group you want to add your new contact to.

3. Uninteract with the group name table.

4. 4. Add your new contact.

Your contact will be added to the group and the cloud will make sure
that this happens on all of your devices.

The contact will also be added to the "All Contacts" group. Do not remove
the contact from the All Contacts group. If you do, then it's removed from
the other group as well.

YOu want to select or create a group. Then, you want to go in to your main
contacts and, from there, select the contacts you wish to add using the
usual methods. Then, go back to the groups table and find the group to
which you wish to add those contacts. Now, Navigate to the contacts table
for that group. Paste in the contacts in the usual way.

RE: SSD external drive for Mac

Perhaps this has already been posted, but I am using a my pass port one TB

the USB port on my mac book pro without any power supply. It will also work
on a windows machine I cannot say anything about the included software since
I have not used it, but thus, far I have had no issues using the lion or
mountain lion disc utility with this drive. It is fast and quiet. Also, it
will support USB 3.0 though no fire wire, or thunder bolt.

Hi,

I know this isn't really an answer but, I don't think the small increase in
speed gained by an external SSd is worth the premium price. For an external
drive, I would recommend sticking with a traditional platter hard drive.

Hey Caitlyn.
Two separate deals here: The dictation app and the Speakable Items app. First,
I don' know of anyone who's gotten Speakable Items to work very well, other
than "what time is it." Useful, a good conversation piece, but… a lot of the
other speakable items don't seem to work that well most of the time.

Second: Dictation. If you his the function key (or whatever you're using for
a shortcut) twice, you hear the "I'm listening," low B-flat tone Talk into
your microphone, and when you're done, tap that shortcut key once again, and
you'll hear the high b-flat tone. Within a second, you should hear VO speak
the things you just babbled.

If it doesn't work that way, get back to me and we can try other avenues of
figuring this out. :)

Hi Clin and Mark,

I've done all the setting up of dictation and of the speakable items.

As far as dictation, when I hit the key I've decided to use in an edit field ,
I hear the ding sound, I say what I need to to, and when I check, nothing
whatsoever is written in the edit box!

Supposedly, there's some setting where I can say, computer, send email to blah,
blah, or whatever, and it does it, I guess, is this correct, or am I just
dreaming? lol!

Thanks for any and all help!

Re: what scanning software is compadable with the mack?

2012-08-05 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Chenelle,

VueScan costs $39.95 for a one-year license, or $79.95 for a lifetime license.
It supports the vast majority of scanners and produces excellent images. It can
also do OCR but isn't as good as ABBYY FineReader for this. I think that
FineReader costs around $80 dollars but can't say for sure as I'm in the euro
zone not the US.

You have to buy VueScan direct from the developer, at

So, the combination of VueScan and ABBYY FineReader is cheaper than DocuScan
but takes more setting up.

I put together a little user guide for VueScan with ABBYY FineReader, so if you
choose to go that route, let me know and I'll send it to you.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: SSD external drive for Mac

2012-08-05 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,
The reason I wanted SSD was because this ins a storage drive for the files of
my latest studio CD. Speed doesn't matter. No moving parts should increase
durability over the very long haul. Drive is NTFS AND CAN't be changed,
apparently, so must be exchanged at store.
Ideas?
Kevin
PS. Mac mini can't even see this drive. Tried changing file system to FAT32 on
an XP box I have. No joy.

Signing into iMessages with different Apple ID

2012-08-05 Thread Lindsay Yazzolino
Hi,

I recently upgraded to MOuntain Lion and am trying to sign into the Messages
app with a different Apple ID, but cannot for the life of me figure out how to
sign out of the other ID that I signed in with previously. I checked account
settings in preferences, and cannot find a sign-out button. Am I missing
something very obvious? Thanks!
Best,
Lindsay

Ricardo,

Don't go sitting in any corners, . Those keystrokes are great,

Re: SSD external drive for Mac

2012-08-05 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I know this isn't really an answer but, I don't think the small increase in
speed gained by an external SSd is worth the premium price. For an external
drive, I would recommend sticking with a traditional platter hard drive.

Then, if you apply the first command above, you'll be able to delete it. If
you don't have a shortcut set up for the Back command before running the
first command above, it won't display in the Keyboard Shortcut preferences,
and you won't be able to delete it from the preference pane. It seems like
using the defaults command to set up a shortcut only displays that shortcut
in the preference pane if you already have a shortcut created.

Or, since it's only 128 gb, you could format it fat32 and then both mac and
windows could write to it.

My thoughts exactly. It sounds like the file system in use is one the
mac can't modify, probably ntfs. When you reformat it in disk utility,
remember that all the data on the drive will be completely erased.

Re: Preview versus skim?

2012-08-05 Thread Les Kriegler
I took a look at Skim and had more difficulty accessing pdf's than I did with
Preview, although access isn't that good in Preview either from what I've seen.
I think the best access to pdf documents is through Adobe Reader in Windows.
You can arrow around in documents, jump to pages, and the overall experience is
much better and more efficient. JMO.

The way I do it under Lion - and I haven't updated to the latest dropbox yet,
is to find the file I wish to have a link for in my folder, press vo+shift+m to
activate contextual menu and arrow down to "copy link" and press vo+spacebar on
it. In this way the link for the file will be placed to your clipboard and you
can then paste it wherever you wish.

Re: Preview versus skim?

2012-08-05 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi Esther,

thanks for your hint. I installed Skim and it seems to be a good peace of
software. :-)

Since the update to Mountain Lion I have trouble using Preview and I hoped to
resolve it in Skim. Unfortunately it isn't. So you might have discovered it as
well. When I open a pdf file a line is not a real line. It accurs that a line
is broken in middle of a word for example like this "sh
ift". It's not correct to break a line like that and it's annoying. Did you
also notice this issue or should it be an issue of my two machines?

Thanks for your answer and
all the best
