cheryl, agree. I use it for converting my meds books so i can use them
on the ipad at school. Now i am a lazy girl so usually if I am in the
car i just place Pad on the dash, and go. and have it split into
different emails. It is not advanced, it works, i use all the Ipads
native progrrams, and right now where i am in my life it is a matter
of holding the geek-work on a bare minimum.

What I really like about it is that you can make a file with the commands

For Cheryl. if you have any problems with the converted books, simply
just write .txt after the convert command. A few other output formats

I've never done anything with Boot Camp, but a search of Apple's own

 check this yourself):
Source: Boot Camp Installation Setup Guide
 http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/boot_camp_install-setup.pdf

A USB keyboard and mouse, or a built-in keyboard and trackpad

Also, the Apple Knowledge base has an entry,
Boot Camp 4.0, OS X Lion and Mountain Lion: Frequently asked
 questions

One of the questions is about why using a wireless mouse doesn't work
with the installation, and the answer is that there are not wireless
mouse drivers in this version of Boot Camp, so you have to use a USB
mouse. I suspect the built-in keyboard and trackpad alternatives
refer to laptops. My reading of this is that you need to use a USB
mouse to do your setup. On the other hand, I've never done this
 installation myself.

Basic Cocoa Programming

2012-09-29 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI all (and particularly Esther, as I have a feeling you may hold the answers
to these questions),

I'd like to try and understand a little about basic programming on the Mac. I'd
like to see if I could develop some very simple little apps. I would, of
course, want them to be accessible with VoiceOver. In fact, this would be my
top priority.

I've heard that programming in the Mac's native cocoa language is best in terms
of VoiceOver accessibility.

So, my questions are:

1. Does anyone know of a good resource for learning the basics of cocoa,
particularly any that provide a VO accessibility point of view?
and
2. Are there any apps that can be used to develop apps in cocoa which are
accessible with VoiceOver?

Many thanks for any help.

Nic

 3) To share the list with someone, enter the person's email address (or

 4) Click Done.

Obviously, this process of clicking the broadcast icon that appears when you
place the pointer over the reminder list's name presents problems for
 VoiceOver users.

I've tried accessing a contextual menu, searching the menu bar options, using
VO-Command-F5 to route the mouse pointer to the VO curser and then moving
around with either the mouse or the VO curser but none of these has yeilded
 any results.

Has anyone else had any success sharing reminder lists?

2012-09-29 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
I experienced this inability to interact also. Haven't used it much lately but
think I have resolved the issue.

I had set up a messages activity to turn off cursor tracking like it was
recommended by the user guide. I deleted it and now use normal default cursor
tracking options and it appears to have solved the issue with interacting with
the html.
Best.

The only solution I've found for this so far is to quit Messages and re

Re: DVD Player Again

2012-09-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

The entire Trackpad is also the button. Simply press firmly on the Trackpad
and you'll feel a kind of click as it goes down and it click again as it comes
back up. On older Mac laptops and most PCs there was a separate button(s) for
mouse actions, the Mac has made it a part of the actual Trackpad for quite a
while now. Many VO users don't realize it as we don't really need to press
down on the Trackpad for mouse actions, we just tap or swipe for our needs.

not eject in a reasonable amount of time, release the mouse/trackpad button,
let it start up and then try again. Sometimes, if you are too quick (before
the chime) or too late after the chime, it will not eject.

If you log in through their special anniversary sale link, the coupon code

Alternatively, if this web page is busy, you can go to their catalog page:

You can browse the Take Control titles in iBooks, if you have an iOS
device, but the discounted price and the ability to download alternative
formats and be informed of new, free, updates is only available for purchases
made through their web site. (I find it easier to browse the titles in
 iBooks).

I'll put in a few sample direct links to specific books on their web site:

Drop Box Issue

2012-09-29 Thread Scott Rumery
Hello,

I am having some trouble with DropBox. More specifically, I have 2 team
members that are having an issue with their DropBox folders do not update when
I add something to a shared folder. The files will be visible if the go to the
DropBox website and log into their account, but if they open their DropBox on
their computer the file or files will not be there.

I have tried to unlink the accounts and then relink them but still the problem
persists. I should mention that both of these team members are on Windows
computers but that should not make a difference.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I can try to fix this?

Scott

Re: iPad

Try the accessible-ios google group. I can answer your question, though: go to
settings, general, accessibility, Voiceover, and turn it on. From there, use
the list I emntioned and/or find some primers on applevis.com that might help.
Googling specific questions will also help as there are many tutorials and
articles out there, plus the official Apple documentation for voiceover.

It does, yes, fairly decently, but, may I please make a suggestion to make your
life way easier? Get an app from the app store called Musicdock.

That's all one word smished together. Think Music Dock, only run the two words
together. It's free, don't worry. I mean, ok, obviously you'll have to have a
Sirius XM Radio subscription, which you gotta pay for, but you probably know
that already.

I'd highly highly recommend it! I use it all the time. I mean, ok, the native
app works just fine, but I find the screen ever? so slightly cluttered. I just
find the interface way less sloppy in Musicdock, but again, that's me, don't
take it as gospel.

Re: Sirus XM app iPod iPad

2012-09-29 Thread David Tanner
I have the MusicDoc software and really like it, but I have noticed
justrecently that some of the channels have changed and they have not yet
changed on Music Doc to reflect the channel change on XM. Is there anything we
can do to get that changed so we are getting the right channel on MusicDoc?

Re: Basic Cocoa Programming

2012-09-29 Thread CJ Daniel
Hi,

Download Xcode from the app store. It's a complete IDE for the Mac, which is
completely free. And, based on preliminary usage, it works well with
VoiceOver.

There are free online tutorials available for learning to code, using coco,
C++, etc. However, the best bet seems to be signing up for a subscription to
Safari Books Online. They've got a massive collection of technical books for
Mac, Windows, Etc, Etc. There are various books on the subject of Xcode.

Hope this helps,

CJ

I've heard that programming in the Mac's native cocoa language is best in

 So, my questions are:

 1. Does anyone know of a good resource for learning the basics of cocoa,
particularly any that provide a VO accessibility point of view?
 and
 2. Are there any apps that can be used to develop apps in cocoa which are
 accessible with VoiceOver?

 Many thanks for any help.

Re: menu tab for facebook?

2012-09-29 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey guys, I started using it about a month ago when the Facebook site
decided to start saying combo box on any text field, and you couldn't
hear what you were typing. This app isn't a perfect solution but at
least you can use a lot of it with VO. Regarding the question of how
to search for friends, here is what I do, and it doesn't always work,
sometimes you need to click on things more than once to get them to
load. From your home page, you have to click on Friends than use the
rotor and go to form controls and you will see the search box, type in
your friends name, then use the links to find it and click on it. That
has gotten me to friends pages to write on their wall. Good luck

Re: Instapaper Toolbar Bookmark

2012-09-29 Thread Steve Holmes
I have really come to love Instapaper! I've been putting a bunch of stuff up
there from tweets over the past year and the website is fair enough but I just
got into using the iOS app for it and it is fantastic.

Thanks also to Esther for explaining how the bookmarklet works; I would like to

 Hi Emilio,

The easiest way to put an Instapaper bookmarklet onto your Safari
toolbar is to create the bookmark on your Mac, and then sync it to
Safari on your iOS device. I should add that I found that the process
of creating the Instapaper bookmarklet on your iPhone or iPad as
described at the Instapaper site is also accessible, but it takes more
steps to do. Start at the Instapaper extras web page:
 http://www.instapaper.com/extras

Whenever you encounter instructions to drag and drop a bookmark to
your Safari toolbar, simply use the contextual menu (VO-Shift-M) with
the option to Copy Link. Create a bookmark of the current page with
the Command-D shortcut, and save it to the Bookmarks Bar in the pop
up menu, with a name of your choice (e.g. Read Later). Then,
navigate to that bookmark in the Show All Bookmarks page (brought up
with Command-Option-B), use the Edit Address option of the
contextual menu, and paste the link you copied into the address field.
This works for javascript bookmarklets (such as the Instapaper
Bookmarklet, or Google Translation bookmarklets), as well as regular
bookmarks. If you have these as one of the first 9 entries in the
Bookmarks bar, you can just use Command+1 for the first bookmark,
Command+2 of the second and so forth. Using this shortcut will also
 run javascript bookmarklets.

If you want to read step-by-step directions, I wrote these out in a
mac-access list post at the end of last year. Here's the link to this
post at the Mail Archive site:

Re: Create folders in Finder

2012-09-29 Thread Steve Holmes
I've run into a similar problem while using column view; it is probably same
behavior that is being told about list view. Where it is most problematic for
me is if I have previously expanded a folder like Documents and then left arrow
to come out of that, it is still selected and is thus the folder that a file
will be copied into. I need to play with this further to find a consistent way
to select the parent folder instead.

On Sep 27, 2012, at 8:51 PM, Tim Kilburn kilbur...@gmail.com wrote:

 Hi,

When in List View, I've found that things get pasted into the level of the
Window title. That is, for example, if I press cmd-shift-h to go into my
Home directory then create a new folder or paste an item, the item is put
into the Home directory level. Even if folders are expanded or you've
navigated within an expanded folder, because the window title is my Home
directory, the item is placed in my Home Directory. Therefore, the best way
to ensure that things are placed where you wish when in List View, navigate
to the desired folder and cmd-o (Open) the folder and then paste or create
the item. In this case, because you've opened the given folder, the window
title is now changed and whatever is placed there will, guaranteed, be placed
in the desired location. This has been the behaviour in List view from way
back in the Classic OS versions of the MacOS.

Save dialogs act a little different than this when in List view but This
works every time when in the Finder itself.

Why, when I paste items, do they sometimes paste into the folder I am in,

sitting on the documents folder when I paste, sometimes the item goes into
home and sometimes it goes into documents. I usually use list view if that
 makes a difference.
On Sep 27, 2012, at 9:31 PM, Esther mori...@mac.com wrote:

 Hi Max,

Usually you can create new folders with the Command-Shift-N shortcut
in Finder, unless you are in a directory where you don't have
permission to do this -- like under an account that somebody else
owns, or a directory that is limited to System files and folders.
When you use this shortcut, or equivalently, when you navigate to the
File menu after going to the Finder menu bar with VO-M or COntrol-F2,
your new folder gets created in your current directory. So if I've
navigated to my home directory with Command-Shift-H, using that
shortcut will create a new folder under the top level of my user
account, while if I use Command-Shift-O to navigate to my Documents
folder before issuing that shortcut, the new folder will be created in
my Documents folder. (I can also navigate with my arrow keys in
Finder to subfolders if I want to create the new folder somewhere
 else.)

If you want to place a folder in the Finder sidebar, first create it
in the location that you want, then select it and use the Command-T
shorcut for Add to Sidebar. You can also find this option under the
File menu as Add to Sidebar if you don't remember the shortcut.
To remove an item from the sidebar, when you're focused on that item
bring up the Contextual menu with VO-SHift-M, and select the Remove
 from Sidebar option.

Smart folders are folders whose contents are specified by rules rather
than by selecting specific items. They can also be the saved results
of specific searches that you do in Finder.

2012-09-29 Thread Steve Holmes
I just tried it and the context menu came up with 5 items; one item was New

any of these options will enable replying to the original thread. I could be
wrong though. If so, then we may need to settle for copying the original

I think some of these issues are caused by the way the email list is configured.

Problems with Airserver

2012-09-29 Thread Al Puzzuoli

Hi,
Just wondering if others are using Airserver? If so, how have your
experiences been? Mine have been spotty at best. When I try to Airplay
from my iPhone to my iMac, with most apps audio may not start at all, is
choppy, or stops altogether. MlB At Bat doesn't work at all, the iMac
pops up an airserver window with a URl and an unknown error code. I've
played with Airserver settings, audio buffers, etc, but to no avail.
The interesting thing is, this iMac is running Bootcamp. if I boot into
Windows, I can run Shareport4w, a free Airplay utility, which works
perfectly. So, same iMac, same network. Shareport4w works flawelessly in
Windows, while Airserver under Mountain Lion gives me nothing but grief.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Al

spreadsheeting and word-processing are broken under ml

2012-09-29 Thread erik burggraaf
hi all, i'm frustrating myself no end here. i relied on open office under sl
to run my whole business. i have spreadsheets up the ass going back years
tracking clients, resellers, billing, expenses, the works. i was relying on it
to fill in reports with complex tables that text edit wouldn't handle nicely.

When i jumped from sl to ml, open office was no longer compatible. So, i
updated open office and now accessibility is completely pooched. Fortunately i
have iWork here. it will do my spreadsheets, but it runs slow as molasses and
i have to relearn a lot of shortcut keys. At least it sort'a works. pages
won't read my complex monthly report document. it completely ignores the
entire table that has the guts of the report.

What am i to do? i'll buy other tools if they are reliable and compatible.
That's no problem. Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Re: Protecting a file with a password

2012-09-29 Thread John Panarese
I don't think you can do this natively in OS X. You can use disk Utility to
create an encrypted disk image of a folder. FileVault encrypts the entire
system disk. You could lock a file or folder or change it's permissions to
grant no access, but I am not aware of a way to place a password on a file or
folder. However, I surely could be wrong and there may be third party
solutions for this.

That means that also you can find many texts at bookshare in case you live in
the US; just look for the O'Reily collection. I don't know if they are

 Hi,

Download Xcode from the app store. It's a complete IDE for the Mac, which is

I'd like to try and understand a little about basic programming on the Mac.
I'd like to see if I could develop some very simple little apps. I would, of
course, want them to be accessible with VoiceOver. In fact, this would be my
 top priority.

I've heard that programming in the Mac's native cocoa language is best in
 terms of VoiceOver accessibility.

You seem quite knowledgeable about finder, so perhaps you can explain this?
Why, when I paste items, do they sometimes paste into the folder I am in,
and sometimes into the folder I am pointing to? If I am in my home folder
and paste, for instance, I might get the item in home. However, say I'm
sitting on the documents folder when I paste, sometimes the item goes into
home and sometimes it goes into documents.

 Cheers,

 Esther
