Re: iPad

Hello, I might to also assume that you are a brand-new iOS user if so there is
a gentleman on Apple this VIS Apple this.com who works primarily with visually
impaired and has done many podcasts dealing with iOS software and how voiceover
works. His name is David Woodbridge. If you go through there podcasts section,
you will find your share of podcasts relating to Iowa software done by David
Woodbridge also you can find his podcasts in iTunes. I hope this helps.

Googling specific questions will also help as there are many tutorials and

Re: Sirus XM app iPod iPad

Matt please ask a question? Since when did Sirius XM app become accessible at
thing has always been a piece of junk. I had a friend who told me that he could
get around it a little easier, however it still was not quality that it
should've been. I dump Sirius XM primarily because their app was so crappy. I
find I'm able to get the same quality of music on the radio on the Internet for
free

 Hi Max,

Usually you can create new folders with the Command-Shift-N shortcut
in Finder, unless you are in a directory where you don't have
permission to do this -- like under an account that somebody else
owns, or a directory that is limited to System files and folders.
When you use this shortcut, or equivalently, when you navigate to the
File menu after going to the Finder menu bar with VO-M or COntrol-F2,
your new folder gets created in your current directory. So if I've
navigated to my home directory with Command-Shift-H, using that
shortcut will create a new folder under the top level of my user
account, while if I use Command-Shift-O to navigate to my Documents
folder before issuing that shortcut, the new folder will be created in
my Documents folder. (I can also navigate with my arrow keys in
Finder to subfolders if I want to create the new folder somewhere
 else.)

If you want to place a folder in the Finder sidebar, first create it
in the location that you want, then select it and use the Command-T
shorcut for "Add to Sidebar". You can also find this option under the
"File" menu as "Add to Sidebar" if you don't remember the shortcut.
To remove an item from the sidebar, when you're focused on that item
bring up the Contextual menu with VO-SHift-M, and select the "Remove
 from Sidebar" option.

Smart folders are folders whose contents are specified by rules rather
than by selecting specific items. They can also be the saved results
of specific searches that you do in Finder.

 Cheers,

 Esther

Re: Protecting a file with a password

2012-09-29 Thread John Panarese
I don't think you can do this natively in OS X. You can use disk Utility to
create an encrypted disk image of a folder. FileVault encrypts the entire
system disk. You could lock a file or folder or change it's permissions to
grant no access, but I am not aware of a way to place a password on a file or
folder. However, I surely could be wrong and there may be third party
solutions for this.

spreadsheeting and word-processing are broken under ml

2012-09-29 Thread erik burggraaf
hi all, i'm frustrating myself no end here. i relied on open office under sl
to run my whole business. i have spreadsheets up the ass going back years
tracking clients, resellers, billing, expenses, the works. i was relying on it
to fill in reports with complex tables that text edit wouldn't handle nicely.

When i jumped from sl to ml, open office was no longer compatible. So, i
updated open office and now accessibility is completely pooched. Fortunately i
have iWork here. it will do my spreadsheets, but it runs slow as molasses and
i have to relearn a lot of shortcut keys. At least it sort'a works. pages
won't read my complex monthly report document. it completely ignores the
entire table that has the guts of the report.

What am i to do? i'll buy other tools if they are reliable and compatible.
That's no problem. Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Erik Burggraaf

Problems with Airserver

2012-09-29 Thread Al Puzzuoli

Hi,
Just wondering if others are using Airserver? If so, how have your
experiences been? Mine have been spotty at best. When I try to Airplay
from my iPhone to my iMac, with most apps audio may not start at all, is
choppy, or stops altogether. MlB At Bat doesn't work at all, the iMac
pops up an airserver window with a URl and an unknown error code. I've
played with Airserver settings, audio buffers, etc, but to no avail.
The interesting thing is, this iMac is running Bootcamp. if I boot into
Windows, I can run Shareport4w, a free Airplay utility, which works
perfectly. So, same iMac, same network. Shareport4w works flawelessly in
Windows, while Airserver under Mountain Lion gives me nothing but grief.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Al

2012-09-29 Thread Steve Holmes
I just tried it and the context menu came up with 5 items; one item was "New
email" and the others were things like copy, Add to VIP, etc. I don't think
any of these options will enable replying to the original thread. I could be
wrong though. If so, then we may need to settle for copying the original
address and then do a normal reply and paste in.

I think some of these issues are caused by the way the email list is configured.

to come out of that, it is still selected and is thus the folder that a file
will be copied into. I need to play with this further to find a consistent way
to select the parent folder instead.

 Cheers,

 Esther

What is it you want the 4 programs to do together? I could give you

I have really come to love Instapaper! I've been putting a bunch of stuff up

Thanks also to Esther for explaining how the bookmarklet works; I would like to

Re: menu tab for facebook?

2012-09-29 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey guys, I started using it about a month ago when the Facebook site
decided to start saying combo box on any text field, and you couldn't
hear what you were typing. This app isn't a perfect solution but at
least you can use a lot of it with VO. Regarding the question of how
to search for friends, here is what I do, and it doesn't always work,
sometimes you need to click on things more than once to get them to
load. From your home page, you have to click on Friends than use the
rotor and go to form controls and you will see the search box, type in
your friends name, then use the links to find it and click on it. That
has gotten me to friends pages to write on their wall. Good luck

Re: Basic Cocoa Programming

2012-09-29 Thread CJ Daniel
Hi,

Download Xcode from the app store. It's a complete IDE for the Mac, which is
completely free. And, based on preliminary usage, it works well with
VoiceOver.

There are free online tutorials available for learning to code, using coco,
C++, etc. However, the best bet seems to be signing up for a subscription to
Safari Books Online. They've got a massive collection of technical books for
Mac, Windows, Etc, Etc. There are various books on the subject of Xcode.

Hope this helps,

CJ

Re: Sirus XM app iPod iPad

2012-09-29 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
It does, yes, fairly decently, but, may I please make a suggestion to make your
life way easier? Get an app from the app store called Musicdock.

That's all one word smished together. Think Music Dock, only run the two words
together. It's free, don't worry. I mean, ok, obviously you'll have to have a
Sirius XM Radio subscription, which you gotta pay for, but you probably know
that already.

I'd highly highly recommend it! I use it all the time. I mean, ok, the native
app works just fine, but I find the screen ever? so slightly cluttered. I just
find the interface way less sloppy in Musicdock, but again, that's me, don't
take it as gospel.

Chris.

Re: Drop Box Issue

2012-09-29 Thread Emilio
Scott,

The way I have resolved this dropbox syncing issue is to simply
restart the computer and generally it will force the download to begin
and appear in the dropbox folder.

Hope this helps you. :)

Yup.

The only solution I've found for this so far is to quit Messages and re

Re: iPad

2012-09-29 Thread Alex Hall
Try the accessible-ios google group. I can answer your question, though: go to
settings, general, accessibility, Voiceover, and turn it on. From there, use
the list I emntioned and/or find some primers on applevis.com that might help.
Googling specific questions will also help as there are many tutorials and
articles out there, plus the official Apple documentation for voiceover.

Drop Box Issue

2012-09-29 Thread Scott Rumery
Hello,

I am having some trouble with DropBox. More specifically, I have 2 team
members that are having an issue with their DropBox folders do not update when
I add something to a shared folder. The files will be visible if the go to the
DropBox website and log into their account, but if they open their DropBox on
their computer the file or files will not be there.

I have tried to unlink the accounts and then relink them but still the problem
persists. I should mention that both of these team members are on Windows
computers but that should not make a difference.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I can try to fix this?

Scott

Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale

2012-09-29 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I had little bit of trouble with this website in safari but found that if I
changed settings in voiceover utility > web, I could navigate the table. But
I'm having trouble telling whether or not my discount is being applied. Next to
the filled-in coupon it says "enter coupon" button. I didn't know whether this
was if yu wanted to enter another coupon or to confirm that one but whether I
hit that button or not, the prices stayed the same. So I'm sitting here on the
Paypal website trying to decide whether to put this through or not. I do a lot
of shopping online so hopefully I'm not just failing to look closely enough.

Title: [Maccessibility] Apple Continues Tweaking iOS AppStore
Maccessibility has posted a new item, 'Apple Continues Tweaking iOS AppStore'

Apple has continued its iOS 6 overhaul of the AppStore with some additions which improve the experience for VoiceOver users.

Above the bottom row of tabs in the Search and Genius screens is now a Picker control which provides a list of the various apps which have been returned. VoiceOver users can flick up and down [...]

accessible RAM freeing app for OS X

2012-09-29 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi all.
I'm wondering if any of you have found an app either free or paid, on the Mac
App Store or not, that will allow you to free up memory?
I've always used either freeRAM under windows or Maxmem under windows, but I'd
like an app to do this under OS X. Of course, this app needs to work reasonably
well with VoiceOver.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Matthew Campbell.

Re: DVD Player Again

2012-09-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

The entire Trackpad is also the button. Simply press firmly on the Trackpad
and you'll feel a kind of click as it goes down and it click again as it comes
back up. On older Mac laptops and most PCs there was a separate button(s) for
mouse actions, the Mac has made it a part of the actual Trackpad for quite a
while now. Many VO users don't realize it as we don't really need to press
down on the Trackpad for mouse actions, we just tap or swipe for our needs.

HTH.

For Cheryl. if you have any problems with the converted books, simply
just write .txt after the convert command. A few other output formats
is htm, rtf, and pdf. And prolly others.
As i told Annie yesterday i do one at the time. It works adoringly,
and runs as i would expect. My only problems so far is my medical
books, which seems to be too huge, but that is another storry.

After I hit VO-A and wait for it to automatically interact, I hit Control to

I experienced this inability to interact also. Haven't used it much lately but
think I have resolved the issue.

I had set up a messages activity to turn off cursor tracking like it was
recommended by the user guide. I deleted it and now use normal default cursor
tracking options and it appears to have solved the issue with interacting with
the html.
Best.

Basic Cocoa Programming

2012-09-29 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI all (and particularly Esther, as I have a feeling you may hold the answers
to these questions),

I'd like to try and understand a little about basic programming on the Mac. I'd
like to see if I could develop some very simple little apps. I would, of
course, want them to be accessible with VoiceOver. In fact, this would be my
top priority.

I've heard that programming in the Mac's native cocoa language is best in terms
of VoiceOver accessibility.

So, my questions are:

1. Does anyone know of a good resource for learning the basics of cocoa,
particularly any that provide a VO accessibility point of view?
and
2. Are there any apps that can be used to develop apps in cocoa which are
accessible with VoiceOver?

Many thanks for any help.

Nic

Hi,

You shouldn't need a mouse. Using tab and enter should work just fine.

cheryl, agree. I use it for converting my meds books so i can use them

of all i need to get a few coffs and a few smokes, i am not kidding, i

For Cheryl. if you have any problems with the converted books, simply
just write .txt after the convert command. A few other output formats
is htm, rtf, and pdf. And prolly others.
As i told Annie yesterday i do one at the time. It works adoringly,
and runs as i would expect. My only problems so far is my medical
books, which seems to be too huge, but that is another storry.
