Re: ABBYY FineReader Express OCR app on sale for 50% as today's MacUpdate Promo

2012-10-30 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Thanks. I was trying to figure out what version I have but it wasn't really
clear to me from the about window. I know i've done one upgrade since I
bought it and that's when we started seeing the duplicate buttons in the Quick
Tasks window. But the link you posted definitely showed as 10.6 when the dmg
was downloaded and opened. I'll have to go scouting this out eventually in case
I should be getting a new version.

The current version (8.3) is supposed to be good for Mountain Lion,

Mountain Lion. There were comments in the mupromo page asking about
the version, because the default trial download and link from that web
site was for version 8.2, and the developer responded by saying you
 should download the version:
 http://www.abbyydownloads.com/FRMACLion/ABBYY_FineReader_Express.dmg

I don't know that there is an updated trial version for 8.3.

 Hi All,

This is a late alert, but the OCR app, ABBYY FineReader Express
version 8.3, is on sale for $49.99 as today's MacUpdate promo:
 http://www.mupromo.com/deal/13388/abbyy-finereader-express

This is half the regular price of $99.99, and is only good for the
next slightly over four hours. If you've never purchased a MacUpdate
promo before, you'll need to create a user account that involves a one-
time negotiation of a CAPTCHA. This gives you access to all your
receipts of purchases, serial numbers, and download links for the
applications you purchased at any later time. There is a trial
download link from the mupromo.com page, but I believe it's for the
previous version of the software, version 8.2. That means if you're
running Mountain Lion it won't pass the new GateKeeper security, I
think. And if you purchase it, you'll need to upgrade in order to run
 the license.

If you do decide to buy the product, you should download the full,
 current version of the app:
 http://www.abbyydownloads.com/FRMACLion/ABBYY_FineReader_Express.dmg
That way, you don't need to update versions from the trial version,
and you can just enter the serial number to run this.

Sorry for the late catch, but I picked this up off another list.
ABBYY FineReader Express will OCR to multiple languages -- most
European languages and Russian, but not Asian languages like Chinese.
And yes, it's accessible with VoiceOver.l

 HTH. Cheers,

 Estther

accessible FTP clients?

 Hello list,
My name's Daniel, and I figure I'd introduce myself. I was accepted to the
list today, and I'm from Florida.
I recently got a Mac Book pro 13 inch, late 2011 in April of this year. I
figure I'd join this list as I herd that this is a pretty good list to
 receive newly help.
I look forward to learning allot about my first ever Apple machine from this
list, this is my first Apple machine. I have an iPhone, but this list isn't
 about that. ininsmiles*
My Mac thus far has helped me in more than 1 way, but the most promising ways
that it has helped, is in my freedom of not having to rely on an a thousand
dollar screen reader. No longer do I need to pay for a screen reader, one is
already built-in with the use of Voiceover, and for that, I find that amazing.
The other way my Mac has helped, is in the running of my web hosting service,
 www.firestar-hosting.com
Without my Mac and terminal, I'd have to rely on an SSH (Secure Shell) client
to be installed, or I'd have to buy one. Thankfully, however, terminal has
 done me well.
In any event, I'm done talking about how good my Mac has been. I look forward
to receiving as much help as members would be willing to give.
 Have an awesome day.

Re: samba broken in OS X Lion

2012-10-30 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I've tested this again today with a less privileged user. As long as the user
has, minimum, Read permissions to the SharePoint, then everything works as it
should both in Lion and Mountain Lion. If the user does not have proper
permissions to the SharePoint, then the errors you mentioned may appear.

You can try to connect by using a more full path approach such as:

smb://Server_Name.MyDomain.com/SharePoint/MyFolderName

Problems may still arise though if the permissions are not set correctly to the
parent SharePoint.

So, it doesn't appear to be a problem with smb in Lion or Mountain Lion. It
looks to me that it is a permission issue at the Server end. What needs to
happen is that you, or most likely, the Group you belong to should have Read
privileges within the Security pane of the SharePoint. Because it is Windows,
there is also another level of security at the Share itself, I usually allow
the specific Group to have Change privileges there as the Security pane is the
major factor in controlling access.

HTH.

Thanks for your suggestions. Moving the mouse seems to be the best bet, as the

Re: keyboard shortcut

2012-10-30 Thread Traci
iCloud is where I'm loving notes. It is great to jot down something on any
device and it magically appears on the other.

In VO commanders, if you want a capitol letter for a command, just hold down
shift with the letter. So I guess it is still single key navigation, but with
a capitol. :)

other devices. Textedit is more powerful than Notes, but it won't sync like
 that.

You can set different key combinations by using System Preferences under
Keyboard and Shortcuts, I think it is. The Voiceover Commanders are for
commands that would only function while VoiceOver is running, or at least
that is the way I understand it.

 HOpe this helps.

Re: Quick way of selecting default audio inputs and outputs?

2012-10-30 Thread Esther
Hi Doug,

I don't know a way to set up audio input and output selections from Terminal,
but here are a few ideas that might help:
1. I think this setting is controlled by the preference file,
com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist under your account's Library/Preferences
folder, although I'm not sure of this. If so, moving that file to the Trash or
to your Desktop might reset things to the default input and output devices.
I'm not sure this is true, and it might require a restart to take effect. But
if you can log in through Terminal from another Mac, you can delete or move the
file. For example:

mv Library/Preferences/com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist ~/Desktop

Use the tab completion feature of Terminal's bash shell to make typing easier
-- for example, after typing the com.apple.audio part of the file name in the
path, just type a period and the capital letter A and press tab to let the
shell complete the filename with the correct capitalization of letters. That
command will move the specified preference file from your Library/Preferences
folder to your Desktop when your press return.

2. Another thing you can do is try to unload the Soundflower kernel extension,
or even remove it. Again, you'd need to restart your machine for the changes
to take effect. The Soundflower kernel extension is installed in:
/System/Library/Extensions/Soundflower.ext

(That's slash Systems slash Library slash Extensions slash
Soundflower.ext)
To unload this from your system using Terminal, you have to use the sudo
command and enter your admin password:

sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/Soundflower.ext

then enter your password at the prompt. I've also read that you may need to
issue the command more than once for it to take, which you would do by
pressing up arrow and then return a few times. If you want to uninstall
Soundflower, which I don't think you do, you could type:

sudo rm -r /System/Library/Extensions/Soundflower.ext

Again, you need to restart your computer for changes to take effect.

3. If you have a bootable clone of your system on an external drive, shutdown
your system, connect the drive, and then start up while holding down the Option
key. After about 15 seconds, press your left arrow once, and then press
return. You should boot up into your cloned operating system, and have
VoiceOver working under that system's defaults. Then you can figure out how to
repair things on your internal hard drive's settings.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Recovery partition.

I had this problem as well, the first time you use it, it had to download some
additional components. I would try 1 of 2 things. First, I would try waiting
3 to 5 minutes and then doing command-F5 and see if Fred comes up. If that
doesn't work, see if you can get some sighted help to read the screen for you.

Fwd: have Voiceover distinguish between textareas and single-line inputs in html areas

2012-10-30 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
My message is below Apple's reply, but the gist is that I want vo to say
something like multi-line edit text when encountering a textarea element.
Basically, I want to know if pressing enter in a form will submit the form or
insert a new line. I've never heard vo make this distinction, but Apple says it
does if the site is coded right? I'm a bit confused, as my (out of date)
knowledge of html tells me that the textarea element is multi-line while the
input element with type set to text is single-line. So, what extra coding is
required? Am I going crazy and vo really does say this? Any thoughts?

 Hi,

Thank you for your email. Apple relies on each application and web site
developer to properly implement the necessary components into their
applications that allow VoiceOver to work correctly. The functionality you
have requested is already available in VoiceOver if the site or application
you are using provides the appropriate alt information to VoiceOver. We
recommend that you contact the app or web site developer directly to provide
them feedback on the features you are finding do not work.

 Apple Accessibility

 Hello,
One thing Voiceover does not do on OSX (or, to my knowledge, iOS) is
distinguish input types. That is, a single-line input field (an input element
whose type is text, 'email, or some other variant) is spoken as edit
text. Likewise, a multi-line field, a textarea element in html, is spoken as
'edit text. Please add more description to one or the other so the two can
be differentiated. For instance, have textareas be specified as multi-line
text input so that users know that pressing enter will insert a new line
instead of submitting a form. I realize it is a small change, but it is a
huge help to screen reader users to know what that all-important enter key
will actually do. Thanks for your time.

 Have a great day,

Re: Server software for network backup

2012-10-30 Thread Alex Hall
Well, if it's networked storage you want, my first thought is NAS. Network
accessed storage is basically a hard drive any computer on your network can
access. I plan on using this, for instance, to store media. This way, my whole
family can have access to movies and music, and none of us need to keep these
files on our local machines. Let us know if this isn't the sort of thing you
mean.

Re: have Voiceover distinguish between textareas and single-line inputs in html areas

2012-10-30 Thread Harry Hogue
Alex,

I think what they are referring to here has to do with alternative text such as
that commonly found accompanying graphics or images on webpages to give
descriptions which screenreaders are able to read. It sounds as if they are
saying that a site developer should be able to enable something similar for
form controls, almost like a help tag, but if this is the case, it isn't
something I am familiar with.

Thanks,

Harry

 Hi all,
My message is below Apple's reply, but the gist is that I want vo to say
something like multi-line edit text when encountering a textarea element.
Basically, I want to know if pressing enter in a form will submit the form or
insert a new line. I've never heard vo make this distinction, but Apple says
it does if the site is coded right? I'm a bit confused, as my (out of date)
knowledge of html tells me that the textarea element is multi-line while the
input element with type set to text is single-line. So, what extra coding is
required? Am I going crazy and vo really does say this? Any thoughts?
