Hey Cheree, I don't know how to do this with the IPad,but with the IPhone at least, I definitely! can show you. It's a little weird, but it is extremely doable. I do it all the time! OK, so, on your 4S, at least, what you need to do, is after you bring the page up for your first result, tap near the very bottom center of the screen, if it helps, I don't know how much, if any, vision that you have, but if you have enough to see the little thumbnail picture of the artwork for the app, what you need is immediately just directly below that. it's basically gonna be right between that artwork, and your home key. If you can't see it, it is a flickable item, so don't worry. If push comes to shove, you definitely! can flick to it. You will see that there is an adjuster. It'll say something like 1 of 45, or 1 of 200, or whatever. Now, what you want to do is on that adjuster, just like you would do normally, just one finger flick up to get to the next result, and one finger flick down to get to the previous one. Be sure you're focused on that adjuster though before you virtically flick. Otherwise, you're gonna be moving the currently set rotor setting like words, headings, characters, etc. Again, no dice for the IPad. I will say that Chris from Apple did call me back yesterday, around 6, rigbht before he left for the day, and he told me that he, his boss, and about 5 or 6 others had a staff meeting which he himself requested, to discuss the stores IPad accessibility moving forward, as he too agreed since I O S 6.anything came out, it's somewhat climbed down hill in Voiceover support. In this meeting, he told me one of the key outline discussions did revolve around my exact problem. He definitely did send it up to engineering. I'd encourage all of you guys to also write, and have them create you a case number like Chris did for me, this way it's not just an oh, we'll send it up. You need to insist that they give you a case number. I think the more people who do this, the better. They are? now definitely, if nothing else, at least from me, aware the issue's there, but they're not gonna do anything with just one person. I promise you they won't. I didn't say one person can't make a difference, so don't read me out of context. I simply said, one person might make a difference, yes, but only if others also report the bug/breakage. Let's not bombard them, but, let's really pull together and let's all let them know. Regardless if they care or not really at this point is not an issue. David, I could not agree with you more. I will say however that I wish to not reveal whether the person I'm referring to blocking was on that list or not. That really isn't anyone's business on this list. Having said that though, I will warn people on here that David is correct on what he is writing regarding the N V D A list having some pretty bad messages lately. I don't feel however it's my place nor duty to say any thing more publicly to cause the other list more public embarrassment. If you have further questions regarding what David and I are talking about, write either of us privately off list and we'll explain, on a very G rated level, as much as we can. Hi all, My problem has indeed had to do with a spam bot on a list, though in this case, I no longer subscribe to the NVDA list. In any case, spam bots are no doubt making the rounds, and can strike any list, including this one. I've just received word that this bot has been removed from the Blinux list. Some advanced help with msgs on Mac
Hi all, I'm wondering if there is a clever trick to help me out with the following, and I just don't know it. Lol! Maybe a hotspot or something. Anyway, I'm finding in the messages app, I'm uncertain who I'm composing my message to. I'd like a keystroke where voiceover will confirm the message's recipient. I tried vo-shift-I, but that just informed me I was in the messages app. I'm going to try a hotspot next, to see if that will work. If you all have any ideas, please reply. local mail boxes not showing up?
Hi all, I just created several mail boxes in the on my mac section, but do not see them. I have a set of message rooles putting messages into thees mail boxes, but for some reason when going through the mail voxes table they do not show up. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks. Terminal/unix has been around for decades so there is lore stretching back to the beginnings of computer science. It's sort of like asking if anyone has any favorite recipes. There are millions of ways to combine the same ingredients. Best things to ask is how to solve a specific problem. For example, I was just reading about using netcat which allows you to pipe data between two commands over a network. So on one machine somebody was doing tar of a huge file archive and sending that output to netcat and on another machine they were taking that data in from the network using netcat and then un-tarring it. Turned out to be multiples faster than just copying files the regular way and avoids having to temporarily store a huge archive file before transferring. Another recent item was my attempt to archive a web site so I could access it locally. I came up with wget -mcrpk -o process.log http://www.sitetoarchive.com which crawls the whole thing and stores it in the current directory. Then there is the whole thing of MacPorts giving simple installation on OSX for piles of open source packages. Right now I'm fiddling with bootpd to get my osx box to respond to bootp requests to try and get the web interface on my APC UPS to pick up a network address. Anyone do this before? anyone tried Apple Hardware Test?
Hi all, In doing more digging on the spontaneous restart problem, I discovered an option that lets you boot into a hardware test program. I expect it to be accessible, but I am wondering if anyone has ever tried it? It would be my luck to boot into this mode, run into accessibility problems, and have no way to exit it except to shut down (and who knows what I might damage by forcing a shutdown in the middle of a hardware test). No, I had the same problem and wrote them about it too and they told me the
same thing. I ended up uninstalling Ella but I bought Will since I already have
a lot of the English U.S. and English British voices and Spanish voices and
know that I like them. Their customer service is usally very helpful.

Store News Equivalent

blind friendly flatbed scanners? any ideas?
hello everyone. I seem to be running into the google too much information problem. I am looking for a blind friendly scanner that will be supported under OS X (as well as windows 7+ with jaws). I need this information for a technology requisition. so far, I keep getting hits on scanners that are marketed under the intel name (intel reader) and a number of canon models, HP, epson, brother and others. unfortunately, looking at the sites for a lot of these devices, there doesn't seem top be any reference to being blind accessible, let alone being supported with either OS X (and voiceover) or windows (with jaws). some of the sites (like hp) have so many graphics that navigating them is confusing. any suggestions from here would greatly help my search. Hi Eric I've used a canon Lide 70 for years and it's about as blind simple/friendly as you can get. I use it with JAWS and OPen Book, which I know is not available for the Mac. I know many blind people use these lide scanners very happily. This may give you a lead at least concerning Mac scanning programmes. Besides, the chipmunk glitch with the Nuance voices in Mountain Lion has been fixed. Now, it just sounds like a chipmunk when it comes across data detectors or if you have it set to do a pitch change for capital letters. They sound like a giant when you go to an edit field or again, if you have the voices set to do a pitch change when you perform a backspace. For me, I have it set to beep when reading a capital letter and do nothing when backspacing. I wish they would implement the use pitch change feature for everything else like in iOS because the data detector stuff and edit fields pitch changes are annoying, especially with Alex. And anyway, I can't use the Nuance voices because for some reason they crash Chromevox and I have to change to a voice other than Nuance and restart the entire Mac to get speech back. Jaws 14 on VMWare.
Hello All. I'm sorry for asking this on list but I'm not sure who else to ask. I installed jaws 14 on my VMWare machine and it said that the mirror display driver had not been installed properly and that I either restart the computer or repair the instalation of jaws. I did restart the virtual machine a couple of times but the message was still there. In the end I removed it as I couldn't find the jaws repair instalation. Hello all, can anybody recommend another good Mac users group? I have some unresolved questions that I need help with. They were about displaying fonts on screen network printing and some others. Obviously nobody could help on this list at the time. Please don't think I am ungrateful for the support you have given me since moving to the Mac. I don't expect this list to know everything. When I was using a PC I belonged to some sited windows lists as well as VIP ones. So if somebody can point me to a good sited list I would be very grateful. Cheree Heppe here: This design in which a tiny area is to be flicked at to advance the app list isn't a realistic access methodology. The structure of the App Store prior to IOS 6 worked fine, as did the IBooks store. Since the change, My perusal and purchase of both apps and IBooks has dropped off sharply. This isn't because I don't prefer to look around and to purchase, it's because the access has become so chancy and difficult. Whoever is advising the Apple creative teams on blindness disability may deserve a second hard look. This is because when Apple opened its accessibility window for blind users, it completely derailed some entrenched and very expensive blindness products and made the major Windows screen readers look clumsy and badly designed. You don't suppose those blindness bastions are going to take that lying down? What if bad advice in the name of experienced accesibility could be given to Apple to weaken or limit the scope and reach of Apple's new access? What if the voices and speech could be skewed toward the silly season variety, as in that fake Ease Indin accent that allows the perfectly good Australian voice to mispronounce standard words. Some of us blind users depend on the pronounciation to know how a word is spelled. Some mispronounced words when spoken in that fake Ease Indian accent, sound exactly like other real words. So, with a few suggestions that get accepted, and with a few more that well, really guys, the totally blind can't be expected to really handle much, can they, the whole beautifully positive Apple access platform tilts toward the glitchy, falty Windows variety. It is a good idea to call and have a trouble ticket created. How did that old patriotic saying go? Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom. So, let's not give up our newly won freedom with these Apple devices and interfaces. By the way, I'm totally blind and totally able to use the Apple devices, as long as the accessibility playing field isn't stacked against me. In this meeting, he told me one of the key outline discussions did revolve around my exact problem. He definitely did send it up to engineering. I'd encourage all of you guys to also write, and have them create you a case number like Chris did for me, this way it's not just an oh, we'll send it up. You need to insist that they give you a case number. I think the more people who do this, the better. They are? now definitely, if nothing else, at least from me, aware the issue's there, but they're not gonna do anything with just one person. I promise you they won't. I didn't say one person can't make a difference, so don't read me out of context. I simply said, one person might make a difference, yes, but only if others also report the bug/breakage. Let's not bombard them, but, let's really pull together and let's all let them know. Regardless if they care or not really at this point is not an issue. I never heard of a blind accessible scanner. Scanners are scanners. their just hardware devices that come with some generic utility function software for copying, faxing etc that is generally useless and which I ignore. Their neither blind friendly or unfriendly. It's the OCR software that utilizes the scanner that needs to be accessible. I personally like Epson scanners. I've always used them and had very little trouble. Currently I use an Epson Perfection V33 scanner and ABBYY fine reader Sprint, or OmniPage for OCR software. I guess the closest thing to blind-friendly scanner is a SARA--Scanning And Reading Appliance. It's a stand-alone scanner. You scan books, and it uses OpenBok software installed on it. I'm not sure what is being complained abouthere. The tiny area on the screen to flick up or down is no problem to find if one is willing t think for one minute or at least take some advice if not of how to get to it. Tough the bottom left icon, the bottom left tab on the screen and do one flick left. There, you are on it. Honestly this complaint does not sound the least bit constructive. Apple provided accessibility to flick through the apps, and yes, it was a solution that appears to have been an after thought, but at least they did provide it and provided it quickly. It is absolutely perfectly usable and is no harder to use, just different, than before. It is absolutely frustrating when people get on a kick that just because it is different that it is all wrong. It'll say something like 1 of 45, or 1 of 200, or whatever. Now, what you want to do is on that adjuster, just like you would do normally, just one finger flick up to get to the next result, and one finger flick down to get to the previous one. Be sure you're focused on that adjuster though before you virtically flick. Otherwise, you're gonna be moving the currently set rotor setting like words, headings, characters, etc. Again, no dice for the IPad. I will say that Chris from Apple did call me back yesterday, around 6, rigbht before he left for the day, and he told me that he, his boss, and about 5 or 6 others had a staff meeting which he himself requested, to discuss the stores IPad accessibility moving forward, as he too agreed since I O S 6.anything came out, it's somewhat climbed down hill in Voiceover support. Are the local mailboxes expanded in the table? I had this happen with my gmail folders. As soon as I expanded the gmail row in the table, they all appeared. I wish I knew of some as well. I created a new one just the other day that includes more than just the Mac and I am hoping to grow into a beast like this one but we shall see. I spent some time in Google Groups trying to find some good ones but I hate their new layout. Trying to go anything is rather difficult. Another Update About Infovox Demo Voices
Hi guys. I've received another email about the Infovox voices. It appears that the problem occurs when using the voices with more than 1 app. See below. Dear Shawn, We've traced back the problem with the demo voices. It happens to occur when two different application use the same voice in demo mode. For example Voice Over and another application. We're investigating the problem and will try to come up with a solution. I'm afraid that in the meantime the only solution we can offer is to ask you to test the voices with one voice application only. Please note that the problem should not occur for activated (purchased) voices. I'm not sure if it's still active, or if it'd meet your needs, but it's something to google to get more information on. I got this too and i wrote back and told them that didn't make sense. You can't just use a voice in isolation with voiceover.
