TextEdit becomes unusable after sending selected text to it.
Mark, In order to send selected text from anywhere on your mac into TextEdit, you have enable it in system preferences / keyboard and choose keyboard shortcuts tab. Then vo+right arrow to the first table of available categories. Interact with it and arrow down to services. Stop interacting and move right to the second table which will now say services shortcuts keys or something obviously relevant. Interact with the table and now you have a long list of possible services. Either you arrow down to the item new text edit window containing selection, or use item chooser menu to jump there by beginning to type new textedit window containing selection, which should take you straight to the item. Vo+spacebar to choose this. First you have to check the box to the left of new TextEdit window containing selection' item in order to enable it in your services menu in each application's menu. once the box is checked, move right to press the button which says add shortcut. vo+spacebar and you should be presented with the text box where you want to put your shortcut keys. Just press them, and they will be registered. Remember that you need to make sure that they do not conflict with other cross system shortcut keys. I've made mine to be command+control+t. Close system preferences and you can start using your shortcut. Now whenever you select a piece of text or even an entire document or webpage, you can just press your shortcut key combination and TextEdit should open up with a new document containing your selection. I find this very useful and fast, especially when I highlight a whole webpage with an article that's already been stripped of all the junk by readability services. All this knowledge has been gleaned off Esther's posts in the archives on the subject. Thanks Esther. Others have also posted on this services frequently. So there is more in the archives. [2 Updates] VoiceOver behaviors in Safari [1 Update] TextEdit becomes unusable after sending selected text to it. Andrew Lamanche andrew.laman...@gmail.com Nov 14 03:58PM Dear Listers, I've come across a very strange behaviour when sending selected text to TextEdit. As far as I can recall it has only happened thus far when I was trying to select a portion of an e-mail and then executed the command to have it send to textedit. Textedit will open a new window in which I can read the text I have sent to it. But what happens next is peculiar. If I try to save this text, and press command+s, I get a response from Voiceover untitled but I cannot actually see the window in which to make the usual save choices. In fact I can't do anything at all. When activating window chooser menu to ascertain whether a save file dialog is open or not, TextEdit reports no windows at all. In order to come out of this problem I have to press escape and again I can see and read my text. But now, if I want to close this window or quit TextEdit altogether, I can't do it either. TextEdit is stuck and when attempting to close it, I get again the same untitled response from VoiceOver. At this point, I have to force quit textEdit. Another strange thing is that normally, if one force quits an application, the force quit window remains open in the finder and one has to close it manually. This is not the case here. The force quit window is not there. Has anyone seen this behaviour? Is this a Voiceover problem? I use Macbook air with Mountain Lion. Andrew Harry Hogue harryhog...@gmail.com Nov 14 10:50AM -0600 Hello, I have experienced this problem as well. Interestingly, it seems as if you command tab way from the window after pressing command S to save, once you command tab back, if I remember right, you will have the regular save dialogue, etc. It is as if VoiceOver loses focus. It might be a useful exercise to see where the mouse pointer and VoiceOver cursers are during all of this. As for TExtEdit freezing and having to be force quit, that is something I have no answer for but have also noticed. Again it might be some sort of focus issue. Hope this helps, some at least, Harry Maria Joe Chapman bubbygirl1...@gmail.com Nov 15 07:12AM +1100 Hi. i didn't even realize you could send text to text edit. I have always just opened text edit and copy and pasted. how do you do this?
Opinions on I Mac.
Kawal, Hahaha, I think I'll take you up on that, even though the cost in getting to wherever you are will likely be more than buying a new iMac with fusion drive myself. :) What Niel said sounds about right to me. My estimations are that my 21.5 inch iMac is around 50cm wide, or about 20. Maybe a little less given it is 21.5 inches across the hypotenuse. Anyway, importantly it's only 10 at the most, probably with some room to spare. Of course you then need to factor in the power cord, keyboard and track pad, but these don't take up too much space. I have a fairly large desk, and I could probably comfortably fit four iMacs on here with keyboards and everything if I really wanted to. As it is, I have the iMac, power board, scanner, external hard drive, keyboard, track pad, USB hub, telephone, lamp, box of tissues, and still have plenty of room for my cup of coffee and snacks whenever I need them. :) Hope this gives you some idea. There are two factory models of 21.5 inch iMacs and two factory models of 27 iMacs. The More powerful and more expensive 21.5 inch iMac is has the same specs as the cheaper and less powerful 27 iMac. I think the only difference with the top end 27 iMac is with the processor and screen size. The RAM and HD/SSD is the same. However, if you order from the Apple Online Store you can customise them. You'll have to let us all know which you end up buying now. Cheers, Nic -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Opinions on I Mac.
Hi Kawal, There's a 21.5 inch iMac, with 8GB RAM (configurable to 16GB) and a 2.9 GHz quad core Intel i5 processor which can turbo boost up to 3.6 GHz. This is configurable to a 3.1 GHz quad core Intel i7 processor, which can turbo boost up to 3.9 GHz. This is exactly the same as the base model 27 iMac. However, the top model 27 iMac comes standard with a 3.2 GHz quad core Intel i5 processor, and is configurable to a 3.4 GHZ quad core Intel i7 processor. I believe that a fusion drive is available for the 21.5 inch iMac, but from the way the information is displayed in the table on Apple's website I can't tell for sure. So better check this one out. It should be easy to tell once you start the ordering process online. Unfortunately the new iMacs aren't available to order yet here in Australia, even though it says they will be available in November. Not sure what the deal is in the UK. Best, Nic P.S. Okay, next time I'm in the EU I'll swing by and play with that super sexy fusion drive. Please forgive me if I'm moved to tears though. It's funny how something which such a short while ago seemed so new, modern, sleek, sexy, fast and totally satisfying could so quickly seem slow and outdated. Apple is at once the cause and solution to all my frustration. ;) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: i pad mini question:
Cheree Heppe here: I find the IPad Mini easier to locate Icons on and have no problems carrying it in the smaller back pack compartments. It is definitely lighter weight than the standard IPad. I have used the tethering option, but found it slower. You might try getting one of those MiFi gadgets that look a little like a mobile phone, but are a wifi generator. They go through the phone bands. I'm testing this modality currently. There are several drawbacks. There is no easy way to tell if the unit is on or off. I tell this by querying the phone and it lets me know when the wifi is connected. Hope this helps. Hi. This is a problem on both my mac and iphone. Since I check email on several machines, including a Windows box, I want to filter my messages through Gmail's filters. Only I can seem to find the right filters. I set the filter to have the email bypass the inbox, and if it contains either from the viphone or maccessability addresses it should be marked as newsList so I can just read all these message in my newslist folder. But it's not working. Any suggestions from either list appreciated. To add to what I just wrote, I am running Mountain Lion, and Youtube videos play automatically for me. I am able to press k to pause, j to rewind, and l to fast forward, on most youtube videos. I discovered this by default. I hope it helps. Thanks, Harry On nov 15, 2012, at 2:30 p.m., - dandun...@gmail.com wrote: I have snow leopard. How to Maintain Your MacBook Battery
Hello All, The following is a very informative article I came across today. The link to the original post is located as the end. Enjoy, Mark How to Maintain Your MacBook Battery Posted 11/15/2012 at 10:42am | by Cory Bohon The battery is the key component of any portable device, but did you know that battery maintenance is important to keeping your MacBook healthy? With proper maintenance and calibration, you can keep your computer’s battery performing at its optimum, providing you with more juice when on the go. Continue reading, and we’ll show you how to properly maintain your battery. Battery Maintenance Standard Maintenance A Mac portable is just that: a portable computer. It was designed to be plugged and unplugged to allow the battery to discharge and recharge on a normal cycle. As such, if you use your machine plugged in all the time, then it is important that you discharge (or calibrate) your battery every so often. If you rarely use the battery, then Apple recommends completely discharging the battery and charging it again at least once a month. If you use your notebook frequently on the battery and plug it in to “top off” the battery, then a full discharge cycle is required less often. Long-term Storage If you don’t plan on using your Mac portable for more than a six-month time period, then you’ll want to properly store your Mac’s battery with a 50% charge. This will ensure that it won’t fall into a deep-discharge state, or lose capacity and therefore have a shorter life. Temperature is also a huge factor when storing your computer. You’ll want to ensure your Mac and its battery are stored in an environment where the temperature is between 50ºF and 95ºF. Anything more or less, and you could seriously damage your battery over a long period of time. Battery Calibration Each battery has a small chip that provides details about its charge and discharge cycles to the computer. To keep your battery operating at its maximum efficiency, and to ensure that the on-screen battery percentage/time display is accurate, you will need to perform a battery calibration from time to time. This calibration should be performed when you first purchase your machine, and then every few months after. If you rarely use the battery, then you’ll want to perform this process at least once per month. With machines that have built-in batteries, calibration is a step that is not needed, as the batteries are pre-calibrated at the factory. The following machines have built-in batteries: MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009) and later, all version of MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13”, 15”, and 17” released in early-to-mid 2009 and later, as well as the 13” and 15” Retina MacBook Pros. Before starting the calibration process, save all of your work, close all apps, and disconnect any peripherals from your machine to avoid any data loss. For older Mac portables (iBooks and PowerBook G4s other than the PowerBook G4 15” Double-Layer SuperDrive), perform these steps: 1. Plug the power adapter in and fully charge your computer's battery until the battery indicator lights turn off and the adapter plug light goes from amber to green, which indicates that the battery is fully charged. 2. Disconnect the power adapter and use your iBook or PowerBook. When your battery gets low, you will see the low battery warning dialog on the screen. Continue to use your computer until it goes to sleep. At that point the battery has been sufficiently drained for calibration. 3. Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again. Note: You have to fully charge and then discharge your battery only once to calibrate it. After that, you can connect and disconnect the power adapter when the battery is at any charge level. For newer Mac portables (15-inch Double-Layer SD, all models of MacBook, and all models of MacBook Pro), follow these steps: 1. Plug in the power adapter and fully charge your PowerBook's battery until the light ring or LED on the power adapter plug changes to green and the onscreen meter in the menu bar indicates that the battery is fully charged. 2. Allow the battery to rest in the fully charged state for at least two hours. You may use your computer during this time as long as the adapter is plugged in. 3. Disconnect the power adapter while the computer still on and start running the computer off battery power. You may use your computer during this time. When your battery gets low, the low battery warning dialog appears on the screen. 4. At this point, save your work. Continue to use your computer; when the battery gets very low, the computer will automatically go to sleep. 5. Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or more. 6. Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again. Checking Battery Cycles and Life There are multiple ways to check the status of your Mac’s battery. First is to click the icon in the menu bar of OS X.

Yes, you can look through keyremap4macbookpro for options to do this.
