Re: Losing VO after sleep
I was having a similar problem with my Mac Mini but found I had a bad memory stick. My husband was watching and it appears that voiceover was trying to load but took it a minute or two. It's so hard when you don't know whether voiceover is on or not. Sent from my iPad On Feb 20, 2013, at 1:46 PM, Ricardo Walker wrote: > Right, > > Its just like that. Hmm... I'm using Mountain Lion, and all that happens when I arrow in the text is the share menu opens. I can vo-arrow, but that's no better than Quicklook. Re: Nuance Vs Alex (was Intonation)
Agreed. I don't like American Nuance either, that's why I prefer Serena (British) or Lee (Australian). Here's how odd my tastes are: if I had my way, I'd be using eSpeak with Voiceover on my iPhone and mac. Yes, eSpeak. If you haven't heard that one, google it; it is absolutely horrible at first, but it grows on you and you eventually realize how fast it can go while still being totally understandable, something the newer, "human-sounding" voices cannot do. Re: Nuance Vs Alex (was Intonation)
Hi Kerri, To download the voices, you'll go to your Voiceover utility with Vo+F8. Go to the "speech" category, and the voices tab should be selected. Vo+Right arrow to where it says "default" and you'll then see a popup button with your currently selected voice. Vo+space on that menu, and go down until you hear "customize.." At that point, activate that, and you'll be presented with a voices table. Interact with this table, and you can see the voice names and languages they're from. Check the voice (s) you want, and if you want to play them, stop interacting with the table, and go right to the "play" button. then you can hear how they sound before downloading. When finished with your voice selection, move to the "ok" button, and you'll be prompted to download the voices. Once this is finished, you will find them in your voiceover voice selection for use. Go to the vo utility, select speech from the table, select the voices tab, open the voice popup menu, and select customize. Once the resulting window loads, use the table to check all the voices you want, then hit the download button. You will be asked if you really want to download the voices as they are quite large - say yes and, after a while (depending on how many you selected), the files will be downloaded and installed. They will then appear both in that voices tab you started in, and in the quick speech settings available by arrowing around with vo-cmd held down. Re: Nuance Vs Alex (was Intonation)
My favorite voices-for the moment-are the Acapela voices. They are quick and responsive and they have the best characteristics of Alex for entonation but the quuickness of response of the nuance voices. To indicate capitol letters, I just needed to reset VO so that it plays a sound when ever caps are present. looks like I struck gold on this thread. hitting Command F5 4 times sounds weird, that's like turning VO on and off twice. Hi Israel Yes, it seems to now count podcasts you haven't downloaded yet as unplayed. I'm glad I'm not the only one (smile). Hi Ricardo I think both is true. This is because the thing is it's not just us that gets attacked. I Can't claim to be an expert myself. However, although you can install anti-virus on your computer, you are ultimately depending on that company to know what they're doing, and this has always been the strong point for the Mac, The fact that everything is all one unit and you don't have to worry as much about this issue. In Apple's case, they could say "we have it covered for you, and you don't have to worry about that." The thing is, when we choose an antivirus program, unless we are computer professionals, we have not a clue if that company knows what they're doing. In fact, most of us blind folks are going to choose the company based on whether they are accessible. The We are not actually taking our own responsibility when we install antivirus on our computers. This is because we are trusting someone else to do it right. If they don't, we've had it. It would be different if we could do our own programming and protect ourselves With our own expertise. Re: Intonation
H, I am using Alex and maybe that's why I can't really tell much of a difference when I changed the intonation. The only reason I was trying to figure it out is because Alex seems to skip words or blend two words together and it sounds really weird. Then I am finding myself wasting time going back to check my typing only to find that I did type correctly. :) Does anyone else experience this? Re: Virus Protection on the Mac
I should also like some clarification on that point. Frankly, it seems to me that the app dev should do some antivirus scanning on what they put out: but, by the same turn, frenkly, I think the end consumer must bear the responsibility for the security of their own machines and scan what ever comes in-be it from the app store or what ever source. This, in my view, means installing a good and easy to use antivirus package on their Mac. If you don't mind a shameless plug here, I'd say go with ClamXAV. Well, I've just installed and run ClamXAV. Very accessible and extremely fast. Frankly, it's such a good little but extremely thorough antivirus app that I do believe that when I can, I shall make a small donation to the dev. It's not mandatory-but, I'm sure it's appreciated when possible. Like I said, quite accessible. Re: Virus Protection on the Mac
Yes, finally. She had to wag that desk top computer in to get it done. Also, she has been talking about switching to the Mac for some time, and now she tells me she is closer by far. When she bought the Windows computer, she told me she was not going to do the switch right then because she had so much work to do that she didn't want to learn VoiceOver. Now she's asking me about the brf files on the Apple web site. I suggested that if she's going to do the switch that she not wait until the Windows computer is dead and gone so that she can use it when she has to get something done right away. We both agree that if she gets a Mac that she take the Windows computer off the Internet and use it for things where it's less likely to have all this happen. Re: Losing VO after sleep
Hi, I agree with others that pressing command f5 four times will start VO again. I have eliminated this problem on my 2013 MacBook Pro by turning the power nap feature off. Earlier machines don't have this feature anyway. In a brief test, it did not seem to do anything. I am pretty sure that the Nuance voices do not honor the intonation setting. I have not tried Alex or any of the older voices though. Hello, Internation is simply a numerical value assigned to how expressive a voice is. So, for example if you have internation set to zero, your voice will sound very monotone, almost like a robot. On the other hand, if you have intimation set to 100, it will be very expressive. Hope this helps. Virus Protection on the Mac
Hi guys I am speaking here strictly from a lay woman's point of view, especially after what happened to a blind friend of mine who was beside herself with fury when her Windows desktop caught a vicious virus and she had to spend all day on the issue, including disconnecting and wagging the desktop (using cab fare), to get rid of the virus. She has virus protection on her computer, but this nasty virus killed off WindowEyes so that it didn't tell her she had a problem. She misinterpreted everything and thought that her computer had just locked up for some stupid reason. The WindowEyes people, even though they probably weren't supposed to help her with issues other than WindowEye tried, but she had to get a reader to look at the screen, whereupon she found out that the nasty virus had put up a notice that she should pay the crooks $200 to get rid of this thing. Now, the reason I mention this is that this noncomputer professional has better things to do with her time than dealing with the consequences of crooks, and I think it was probably something that MicroSoft never dreamed would get this bad. But in my opinion, Steve Jobs was right. All of this has to be co-ordinated and put together so it works as a unit. I hope that, if Apple hasn't done it already, that keeping up with these viruses will need to be done by them so that everybody, his brother and sister, too, won't have to get involved in this and it won't become a big business like apparently it is for Windows users. I mean, my friend had to shop around to get the best price she could to get rid of this nasty thing created by people who should be in jail. Just my two cents worth, such that it is. Re: can't rename files
Hmmm. Worked fine for me. I had a file named 'junk'. I hit return on it and pasted in your file name. It asked if I really wanted to change the file ending to .mp3 which I gave it the OK to do. One little odd thing is that when I hit return on a file that already ends in .mp3, it only selects the text before the .mp3. So if I took junk.mp3, copied your filename text, hit enter on junk.mp3 and hit paste I would actually end up with a filed called 03. crawl-Chris Brown.mp3.mp3 which is not what I intended. To avoid this, hit enter then do a select all (command-A) and then do paste to make sure you're replacing the entire old filename with your new one. It still shouldn't give you an error. Actually, under the hood the OS added .mp3 to the file so my final file was really 03. crawl-Chris Brown.mp3.mp3.mp3 which is not what I wanted. To really know what the OS has named the file I had to get info and then turn off the "Hide Extension" checkbox right after the file name. Hope this helps. Intonation
I feel kind of dumb asking but what is intonation when choosing voice preferences. I understand speed and pitch but I don't understand intonation. Re: can't rename files
Is MacOS giving the error or is the player? MacOS lets you use anything except a leading period. Files starting with a period are hidden so you normally wouldn't want to name something that way. I even made a test file called '\"/{}[].mp3 and it OSX was just fine with it. CB On 2/20/13 11:17 AM, Georgina Joyce wrote: Hello, That's interesting. Re: Losing VO after sleep
I don't know if this related to your problem or not, but I had something happen with my USB drive this past week. I have set my Mac Book Pro to go to sleep when I shut the lid. I have never had a problem with this, but last week, when I shut the lid and case back, I got an error message that my computer had been restarted and did I want to report it to chpple. I did, and I thought this had something to do with my Bluetooth braille display. Then I discovered tTime Machine wouldn't access my USB drive. I ended up having to call that wonderful 877 number to fix the problem, something that would have been difficult if I had been a Windows computer because who knows who would have admitted that it was their responsibility or job to deal with it. Re: pdf2html with batchconversie, does it exist anymore?
I have that script, but I don't know if this list supports attachments, If it does, let me know and I'll send it along. It does not do much with headings or other formatting, but it does at least grab the text (no OCR, of course). Re: Losing VO after sleep
What are you using for speakers? My first thought is that this is a bluetooth problem, but I don't know if you are using bluetooth audio as your system default. Same for usb - your device may be functioning poorly for some reason. So, what is your audio setup like? Re: anti-Virus Software: download, or Not to Download?
Well, I don't know much about anti-virus solutions, but I tried Clam and was very impressed. There's a table of locations to be searched, and a table of threats that appear during a scan. Once you set your quarantine folder, you just scan, wait for it to finish, and go clear out that folder assuming all the files are actual viruses. There are a few unlabeled buttons, but they have help tags so you can label them easily enough. Besides, it's free, and you can't beat that. What are your feelings about Anti-Virus Software for Mac? If you use it, which do you use? Which is accessible? Until now, I have not used any. apple announced this morning it was hacked by same people who hacked Facebook. So this had me asking myself this question this morning. I'm not paranoid! I feel very safe with Mac OS. We do not have the amount of attacks on Mac, that Windows does. However, it isn't uncommon anymore to hear when it happens. The more people who use them, the bigger the reward for the hackers. So I was curious about your thoughts on this topic. Before anyone jumps down my throat with this post, it's just a question. I feel Apple does a very good job with security. I also know when security flaws are pointed out. They are quick to patch the vulnerability. Thanks for your feedback! If you have MacPorts installed you can just do sudo port install pdftohtml to get it set up on your machine. Losing VO after sleep
upon waking from sleep mode, often VO will not speak. I have to mess around with the volume keys to get some system sounds going, then turn VO off and back on a few times before it will finally come up talking. It takes about two or three minutes to do all this and get VO talking again. it doesn't happen consistently, but more often than not, VO will go silent after sleep mode, or a prolonged period of computer inactivity. Actually, it seems to be tied into system sounds, since I won't get any of the thunking, beeping, quacking sounds that occur when you do something to invoke a system sound, whether VO is turned on or not. So, maybe it's not a VO problem but a system problem? Any ideas suggestions or advice are welcome - it's getting a little annoying. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. can't rename files
Hi, I'm having a problem renaming files. I am going through some mp3 files I have and renaming some of them. Basically, I hit enter on them and take off the track number and then add the artist to the song name. this has worked fine in the past with no problems. This morning, however, I am getting an error message which is saying that the file name is too long or has punctuation. I have checked and double checked and there is no punctuation in the file name except for the dot before the extension of mp3. The file name can't be too long as it's just the artist name and the song title and this has worked before. I have done a verify disk and have repaired disk permissions. Any ideas? Hi there. No no, I wouldn't. However, what I usualy do is to open the file with preview, sellect all text, copy it to a textedit document and read it there. It only takes 3 key strokes. Later.
