Can't change Facebook Password in Mail and Contacts Area of System Preferences

2013-02-22 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi guys,

Ever since I did a time-machine restore, I can't get Facebook andTwitter to
work. they show a password that has the same number of characters as my
computer account password. When I try to change them, they revert right back to
the eight-character password. oddly enough, I've been able to change my
Facebook Chat password for Messages. I'm not trying to change the site
passwords; I just want my password to be reflected correctly in Mail and
contacts, so I can use the share buttons in notification center and other apps.

Thanks,
Teresa

Re: captchas

2013-02-22 Thread Cheryl Homiak
The other alternatives being discussed were www.skipinput.com which employs an
add-on in either Firefox and safari and charges 99 cents for 50 captchas which
expire after a year and www.webvisum.com which requires you to request an
invitation before you can register and employs an add-on for firefox.

I'm not sure what you're referring to, but assuming you're referring to
ZCaptcha.

Go to www.azavia.com and click register. Once you are registered, you have to
refill your account to have funds for the captchas, which are currently
$0.16/captcha. Then go to www.azavia.com/zcaptcha to submit your captcha, or
simply send an e-mail to zcapt...@azavia.com with an attached screenshot of the
captcha.

Re: word count

2013-02-22 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I did some googling and found the following link that gives a script to use.
The script appears to work but turning on the applescript menu as this article
suggests is a bit cumbersome because it means you have to go into the extras
menu and down to the script. So you might want to put it in the dock instead.

creating/editing posts on Wordpress blogs with Safari?

2013-02-22 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
When I try to create a new blog post on wordpress.com, or edit one I posted
with my iPhone, I can't get arrow navigation to work. Vo sees some sort of rich
text area application, which threw up a red flag for me as soon as I heard it.
Inside there I interact with the edit text, but only vo-arrowing works. Regular
arrows, and the associated editing tools (selection, moving bo word to get to a
point I want to edit, and so on) do not work. Vo remains completely silent when
I try to arrow around, but I don't know why. Is there anything I can do about
this, or is there an alternative interface I could use? I know I can copy and
paste, but that does not help if I need to edit an existing post. Yes, Mars
Edit is supposed to be great, but this is just a casual thing for me so I'd
much rather save my $40 for something I'd use more. Any ideas? Thanks.

Have a great day,
Alex (msg sent from Mac Mini)

Re: Capture solving

2013-02-22 Thread Brandon Olivares
Hello,

Sometimes if the screenshot is not very clear, it'll take a longer time to get
back. Remember that people need to actually read it, and so if it is unclear,
less are likely to do so, and the result is prone to be less accurate. We are
always trying to find ways to improve the service, but for the moment there
seems to be no better way. For the easiest captchas, it comes back very
quickly, but for the harder ones, some patience is required.

Let me know if you have any questions about the service.

Re: OT: Samsung Suing Apple Over Voice Over!

2013-02-22 Thread Richard Ring
I don't own a TV and not watching Survivors is not doing me any harm. It's not
that VoiceOver is in danger, it is that Samsung has chosen to bring up
something which is doing them no financial harm whatsoever. And, frankly, it
will gain them nothing, besides being a rather ill conceived PR move.

Re: word count

2013-02-22 Thread Israel Antonio
Lisette,

The only way I've found to get a word count for my Text Edit documents is by
writing and saving in Text Edit, but then when I wish to get a word count, I
open that same document in Pages, navigate the Inspector until I see where it
says Word Count and get my count there. I do not know if this helps or if it's
too cumbersome, but just an idea.

Re: OT: Samsung Suing Apple Over Voice Over!

2013-02-22 Thread Eric Oyen
the only way that samsung will back off is if all blind people in north america
(and elsewhere) sue them (on an individual basis). they would be spending so
much money defending themselves in various courts that they would either go
under or call it a day and try something else.

the only way that such companies will back down is if their source of revenue
is attacked directly. . this is the only kind of force they understand.

2013-02-22 Thread Jessica Moss
Well go figure, it's pretty much your typical competition on either end, and
one or the other has to get upset at some point over something petty. There
was the whole thing with GW Micro vs Freedom Scientific, a while back, which I
unfortunately don't remember what the whole story on that was, which I thought
was pretty ridiculous too, and I'm guessing didn't go anywhere as far as the
suit was concerned, because I didn't hear anything else about it.

Re: OT: Samsung Suing Apple Over Voice Over!

2013-02-22 Thread Dave
Can we all just take a chill pill here?

Samsung makes some of the best televisions on the planet.

What happened in Germany has little if anything to do with accessibility at
all.

It was part of an ongoing legal maneuver to prevent Apple from kicking their
ass in sales and market share.

There's no reason to boycott Samsung for something a bunch of lawyers did in
a foreign country.

Why is it that blind people have to make a mountain out of molehills at
every opportunity?

webvisum won't download.

2013-02-22 Thread Jessica Moss
I've just installed firefox on my mac, which I'm not impressed with, and only
to on occasion, use webvisum when I can't get rumola to work, only to have it
not download. I've pressed the download link multiple times, and it just pops
up a new window, but when I open my downloads folder, it's not there, and the
new window just gives instructions on how to install it, which would be helpful
if I could actually locate the file itself.
Has anyone else had this issue?

Re: Capture solving

2013-02-22 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I am having a right evening of trying out captcha services!
I found ZCaptcha took a long time and then even though it said it was 100%
certain it didn't work when i pasted in the code.
I just go round in circles.
So then I tried Rumola. I downloaded the extension; activitated it fine and
then had the notification when I went on the webpage I am trying to get into
that it would fill in the captcha. It did. But yet again, the page said I
needed to do it properly.
Now I can't get Rumola to work again. How do I make it work? I set it up to
notify me, but it won't notify me or fill in the box after that one first time.
What should I do? Why am I so bad at using these programs to solve captchas?
The website I am trying to register on is
www.pof.com (plenty of Fish) has anyone had any success with registering-or
anyone else been unable to?
Captchas are so discriminatory!
Any help would be appreciated!
Kirsten.

Re: OT: Samsung Suing Apple Over Voice Over!

2013-02-22 Thread Karen Lewellen
According to the article, echoed in the mac accessibility mailing, Samsung
has lost this battle in the German court in question.
However the pr damage should haunt them seriously. Does not google use
their phones for their accessibility items?
If the company wants to fight access, it should lose the right to such
contracts etc.

Just based on a swift read, voiceover is not going anywhere.

Re: word count

No. Not directly. There are two ways you can do it. One way is through an
apple script which you can find online and insert and assign a hotkey for and
use. Another way is via an app called "Word Count". Not in the app store so
far as I know.

I don't really know what's involved, but you might suggest to them that they

locating attachments in mail.

2013-02-22 Thread Jessica Moss
I've just received an attachment from a family member that I need to open and
read, that's supposed to be a text file of some sort, but for some reason, I
can't seem to locate it. This file is really important as it concerns family
matters, so I need to be able to locate it, but have tabbed around in the
message, interacted with it, and can't locate it anywhere.
  Can anyone help?

Printing Envelopes without recipient

2013-02-22 Thread Timothy Hornik
Folks,

How can I print a simple envelope without any recipients. I played with the
options in Pages and Contacts. With pages, I do not like any of the options as
they all include some form of shading and other pretty type effects when I just
want a basic black return address. As for the options with Contacts, I did not
see any options that left the recipient area blank.

All I want is a black boring font with only the return information in the upper
left corner. Bonus item would be sticking a Free Matter For the Blind type of
line on the upper right side, but that is optional.
Thank you for your assistance,

OT: Samsung Suing Apple Over Voice Over!

2013-02-22 Thread jshandra72

Hey Guys,

This is completely off topic. However, this story I'm posting here is
disturbing.
samsung is suing Apple in a German court over Voice Over. They are claiming it
violated one of their patents. What is disturbing, they are trying to get
devices with Voice Over banned. Knowing what this would do to the blind
community. This is so utterly despicable to me. This is just not a calculated
business move. This could actually affect how the blind community has access to
GOOD devices. As we all know, no one touches Apple when it comes to including
the disabled with its computer and iOS devices. Anyways, I thought you might
find this interesting.

help with installing driver for Oxygen 8

2013-02-22 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, everyone.

I listened to Ricardo's first tutorial on the Apple to the Core site about
learning to use Garage Band. This is one of the programs I wanted to learn for
a week or so. Anyway, I wanted to use Garage Band today and install a driver on
the Mac for my Oxygen 8 keyboard. I've tried to install this a few times during
the past week, but I'm having problems
getting past the first part of the installation on the M Audio CD. Voiceover
shows an image browser about a minute
after I click on the M Audio CD. I know in the manual it said to click on an
image with a .pkg extension, but Voiceover just says image selected 1 of 252
after I interact
with the image browser. I went to column view and interacted with the file
list. I tried pressing control option space on one of the files and tried
clicking
on the image this way and nothing happens. After I tried clicking on a file,
there was a dialog that said it could not find the program to open the file. I'm
very frustrated and need help getting past this part of the installation. I
even had someone sighted come over today to take a look (the person is a
Windows user) and unfortunately, he couldn't figure out this either.
What am I doing wrong here? I know after you select the .pkg file, you enter
your user name and password. Since I'm renting this Mac, I don't have a
password on this machine.
Thanks for your help.

Voiceover Help Suggestions

2013-02-22 Thread Emilio Hernandez
Hello everyone,

I have been noticing that voiceover has been performing strangely.
For example, when trying to have voiceover announce a line of text by pressing
VO-L nothing happens. Mostly all cases until recently this keyboard function
worked fine, but now voiceover no longer reads me the line of text I typed when
in Skype message windows, in the Safari search bar, except when I am in a word
processor.
Additionally, when navigating through tables, letter navigation seems to no
longer work when in the Safari bookmarks table, and when in iTunes.
Does any one have any suggestions or things I can try with the hope of
resolving these issues?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Can't Change My Facebook and Twitter passwords in Mail and Contacts After Time-machine Restore

Hi, all,

When I go into Mail, etc. in System prefs in M L, I notice that Facebook has a
password with the same number of characters as my computer user account, and I
can't change it. I can type the Facebook one in there, but it just switches
right back to the previous password. Also, Facebook and Twitter buttons don't
work in the Notification Center. I notice them and I can press them, but
nothing happens.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Re: Navigating through long message threads in WhatsApp

Hello Blake,

Your idea of tucking the thumb in under the index finger worked very, very
well. Now, perhaps you can tell me which finger I should tuck under which
other finger when attempting to place apps on one page of the homescreen into a
folder on another one. :-)

Again, thanks for the tip; it really helped.

 Hi.

Several friends and associates correspond with me using WhatsApp. I have
an iPhone 4S and, although the interface isn't comfortable for me, it is
important that I stay in touch with these people.

In one particular situation, I do not wish to erase any of the dialogue I
am having, because this person's communication with me is a partial
chronicling of a friendship that is very, very important in my life. So
 here's my question:

Since I am loathe to erase a single message in this particular thread, how
can I quickly get to the message that this person most recently sent to
me? Whenever I click on this person's name, WhatsApp takes me to the
beginning of the message thread, and I have thus far found no reliable way
to get to the end of the thread, i.e. to the message most recently sent. I
know that WhatsApp has a feature that lets you clear the messages, but
without knowing whether or not this also deletes the thread, I won't
invoke the feature. So in summary, how do I quickly get to the end of a
thread? A three-finger flick-up advances me a few messages at a time, but
I am wondering if there is a quicker way to get right to the most recent
message sent. Is there a way to export an entire message thread to a file?
I have looked at the settings, but I have struck out thus far.

Kindest regards to all and thanks,

 Mike

Re: html

2013-02-22 Thread Chris Blouch
As mentioned previously, Mozilla has adopted the IAccessible2 APIs on
all their products and refuses to add support for a second API, namely
Apple's. They claim Apple should implement IAccessilbe on the Mac but
Apple says they already have a perfectly good accessibility API
implemented. So until that stalemate is broken all Mozilla apps default
to no accessibility on OSX. That said, some folks have been working to
add support to Firefox but it has taken years so far and is still far
from baked.

Instapaper (was RSS (was accessible "read later" services?))

2013-02-22 Thread Alex Hall
Here's the normal flow of things, at least for me:
1. I read a tweet in Tweetlist with a link I want to look at, but don't have
time to right then.
2. I triple tap the tweet, double tap the "URL" item, double tap "read later",
and am returned to my tweets to keep reading.
3. When I have more time later, I open up Instapaper on my iPhone. I double tap
the "unread" folder, the default location for articles you add, and there's the
article I added earlier, so I open it up and read it.
4. At the bottom of the page is a button that pops up actions like delete,
archive, like, and so on. Articles can, I imagine, be moved to other folders
with this popup, but I have no folders at the moment so cannot say for sure. I
normally just delete articles once I read them anyway. I could archive them to
store them away, like them to have them added to a "liked" folder (kind of like
favorites) or take no action and leave them unread.

Some people use Instapaper as a catch-all when they are researching something.
They will add all the articles and links they find to a certain Instapaper
folder so they can find them and sort them out later. Also, you can send links
or articles to a specific email address and they will be automatically added to
your Instapaper; if someone sends you a link you want to read, just forward it
to that address and Instapaper does the rest. I don't know if there is a
Windows client, and I'm not sure about any Mac clients as they are all paid.
The API is simple though, so if you know someone with programming skills who is
bored I'm sure s/he could hack one together pretty easily. Come to think of it,
I might do that...

Dunno about FileZilla but there have been a number of discussion

Yes, shift and arrows still just bings at me, but VO-SHIFT ARROWS does the
trick. Thanks, Cheryl and Alex! This is a great help. I'm grateful for this
much, but I hope in the future Apple improves this a little. When I'm reading
word by word but change direction, VoiceOver misses some letters which changes
the sound of the words. I also noticed when reading character by character
VoiceOver would not read some spaces. Perhaps this has got as much to do with
the quality of the PDF as it does with Apple and VoiceOver. I know some PDFs
can do really weird things with JAWS and Adobe Reader.

I just installed this on my phone last night, and was able to get through the
angry acorns level, but it won't let me go any further, and for some reason,
won't even let me start the game over. It just keeps telling me, that some
character whose name I can't pronounce always starts from the bottom right of
the screen, I think it is, and how much flower power and furtilizer I have
remaining, and that certain objects like slingshots and shields aren't
available on this level, but won't let me play the game, just plays the sounds
when I tap them.
Am I going to have to buy it in order to play it anymore? That doesn't make
sense if I only get 1 try and that's it, considering the fact that I'm only
just starting to figure the game out.

Hmm, as for that, I'm not so sure, sorry. Maybe in the Calendar Settings. I
suspect there will be that ability but, if not, you could always create a new
Google Account I guess.

Just FYI, if your friend shares a calendar with you it may show up in Calendar
Preferences under the Delegates tab of your Google Account in the accounts tab
of Calendar preferences. It will let you create, modify and delete events just
as if it was your own regular calendar.

Re: having trouble opening pdf files on the mac.

2013-02-22 Thread Cheryl Homiak
How are you attempting to read character by character? In most applications
with voiceover, unless you are in an application where you can edit, you have
to interact with the text you want to read and use vo-shift and the arrows. In
editable areas in applications that allow editing you can actually move
character by character but Preview isn't allowing you to edit the pdf, just to
read it.

Navigate to the place where you want to read the characters; you will already
be interacted with the text to do this. Then use vo-keys with arrows to read by
character.

Re: RSS (was accessible "read later" services?)

The thing I like is that I can add articles from anywhere at all, then read
them in a simple interface. Reader does work, unless I'm in Windows or reading
a tweet on the iPhone but don't have time to read the linked article. Also, the
ability to save articles, and sort them into folders, is helpful.

Did you mean shift with arrow keys while QuickNav was on or off? On which

Re: having trouble opening pdf files on the mac.

2013-02-22 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi Tim,

Thanks for your comments here. I've been getting mixed up with QuickLook and
Preview and associating one with the other.

In QuickLook I basically had to read each whole page in one go. With Preview
I'm able to interact with the text and, with QuickNav turned on and set to the
Navigation router setting, press the up and down arrows to read line by line,
or the left and right arrows to read word by word.

However, I'm still not able to read character by character, unless I start at
the very beginning of the document. This can be really frustrating if I need to
check the spelling of something half way down the page or more.

But, thanks to Ray I guess I can copy and paste into a text document. I didn't
realise I could do this.

So, I'm very happy to rediscover Preview. I still think they need to work on
syncing character and word navigation with where the VO curser is in the
navigation router setting.

Re: shared google calendars?

2013-02-22 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi Alex,

1. Yes, it will sync with Calendar on your Mac and iOS device/s. You just add
your Google account like any other account. ON the Mac, you can do this from
within the Calendar app or from within the Mail, Contacts and Calandars
preference pane in system preferences. If you already have a gmail account in
Mail you may just be able to check the box for calendars in the gmail account
preferences in the Mail, Contacts and Calendar pane of system preferences. On
your iOS device/s I recommend you add it as an exchange account so that you get
push updates. You can find more information on this on Google's Google Sync
help page.

2. Yes, I have. Just log in to Google Calendar with your Google account
chrodentials (i.e. the same username and password you use for gmail). If you
don't want it linked to your existing gmail account, then just use the usual
method for creating a new gmail account. Once you have logged into Google
Calendar, the process for sharing your calendar is a little tricky. I
originally did it with JAWS on Windows and it was near to impossible. It's a
lot easier, but still a little tricky, with VoiceOver.
• Click (i.e. VO-SPACE) on the Settings Collapsed Button, which
is located between the More Collapsed Button and the Create Button. I find this
by doing VO-F and searching for setting.
• This brings up one of these really annoying Google menus which
I think are created with AJAX. VO-Right Arrow through the menu which will have
items such as cosy until you get to an item called settings. VO-SPACE on this.
YOu may have to do it twice, moving away from it and back to it again, before
it activates.
• Once this has activated, you should be able to find a heading
called Calendar Settings. VO-Right Arrow from this and you'll find four tabs:
General, Calendars, Mobile Setup and Labs. Choose (i.e. VO-SPACE on) Calendars.
• You should now find a list of all your calendars. If you've
only just logged in, you'll probably only have one. It will be a link, so you
can navigate to it that way. If you VO-Right Arrow from it a couple of times
you should hear a linke labeled edit share settings, or something like that.
Mine says Shared: Edit Settings, but that's probably because I've shared mine
already.
•The rest of the process should be fairly straight forward. You
basically just have to enter your friends' email addresses in an edit field and
click a share button. I think the only thing to remember is to save your
settings afterwards.
• As I said, don't forget to save your settings afterward by
pressing the Save button. :)

Hope this all makes sense. Best of luck with it and feel free to ask any more
questions.

News Rack, for sure. It ain't pretty, but it's accessible, simple and

Some buttons have help tags which are, funnily enough, helpful.

Great news. Thanks, Kawal. Currently there seems to be a bunch of GPS solutions
for people who are blind or have low vision but none of them is ideal. Some
have good accuracy but few features, some have plenty of features but poor
accuracy. They each seem to have some advantages and some disadvantages, but
there's no single reliable GPS solution I know of that can reliably direct me
to get to a new location. I look forward to hearing more about this update from
Navagon. Hopefully it can go some way to filling this void.

Re: Readiris

2013-02-22 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Adrienne,

According to the Irislink website, the cost of ReadIris 14 is €99 which is more
expensive than ABBYY FineReader.

They seem to have completely redesigned the whole program so I've no idea how
accessible it is.

As far as I know, FineReader will work with any scanner that's recognised by
your Mac. I use it with a Canoscan Lide 110. I do use VueScan as well when I
want to scan more than two or three pages at one go because it requires fewer
key strokes to get the job done and I've had a license for VueScan for over ten
years!

I used to use Omnipage Pro with Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5, but it hasn't been
updated for over ten years and no longer works with more recent versions of Mac
OS X.

So, if you feel adventurous, by all means get ReadIris 14 and let us know how
you get on.

Cheers,

Anne
