setting vmware network to bridge mode?

2013-09-02 Thread Anouk Radix
Hello everyone,
I am using vmware fusion 5 pro with windows 7 and would like to use my wifi
enabled all-in-1 printer udner fusion. I have heard that this is possible if
you set fusion to bridge mode within its network settings. Its now set to share
with my mac but bridge mode is dimmed even if i turn the lock.
Can someone tell me how i can set vmware to bridge mode so that i can use my
printer?
Thanks,

Re: setting vmware network to bridge mode?

2013-09-02 Thread Noel Romey
Anouk,

Go to the toolbar where you have your virtual machine open in VMware.
Interact with the devices groujp and then find the network button. You
can do this by editing the settings or going to the settings btton,
but it's easiest I think, and I hope I'm remembering this correctly,
but to select the bridged option when you click the popul menu button.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, all this does is result in safari going busy. it takes resetting

left to the Table to choose Bookmarks Bar or Bookmarks Menu etc, then press
VO-cmd-t as Ray mentioned or Stop Interacting with the first Table, and
navigate right past the Search field where, hopefully, the Table of

I seem to be having a problem editing the bookmarks bar in Safari (6.0.5)
using voiceover. I get as far as a table on the left side that details 4
entries (bookmarks bar bookmarks menu, history and unknown). I try to use
the VO+shift+m to open a context menu only to have it close immediately.
highlighting the table item and then going to the other frame that should
show the individual bookmarks only shows a search pane and a main pain
with only 2 groups ((new collection and new folder). there doesn't appear
to be any way to edit or remove bookmarks and none are displayed.

Additionally, there doesn't appear to be an edit bookmarks command key
combo and nothing shows up in the main application menu for editing
 bookmarks.

Since I am totally blind, I use voiceover and a braille display device
exclusively. SO, how can I edit my bookmarks bar using strictly the
 keyboard (no mouse)?

Assistant with a workflow

Hi all,

Ok, I think I am successful so far, but of course, I want to expand on this.
Lol!

I found directions online for creating a workflow to set my desktop wallpaper

Can I expand on this, so my calendar alert speaks the title of the photo? For
example, todays photo is: Milky Way Over Spain's Bardenas Reales.

Thank you for any help.

If the image name has the information, pssibly, otherwise I doubt it. I also
don't think the event name could be changed every day, but I am likely wrong on
that front. If you are going by the image name, it might be easier to just make
a script to speak your desktop's image file name.

Reading the Take Control book from Tidbits has really given me a more solid

Is there are marker selection feature I could use or some useful way I can

New to the list, with lots of questions

2013-09-02 Thread Karen Poulakos

Hi,

I'm currently using a Windows pc with the Window-eyes screen reader, and am
considering switching to Mac when purchasing my next computer. I'm
wondering how the Mac experience will differ from my experience with
Window-eyes.

1. Is there a braille transcription program available? I currently use
Duxbury, with a 15 year old Index Everest embosser. I'm open to using a
different braille transcription program, as long as the cost isn't
prohibitive, but I'd like to be able to use my embosser.

2. How about OCR? I currently use Kurzweil 1000.

3. Are there any music notation programs that will work on the Mac? I
currently have not found anything that will work with Window-eyes. I would
like to find software that will allow me to scan music on to the computer,
and will either read or play the music. It would also be nice to be able
to write music notation on the computer.

4. How does the word processing experience differ from pc to Mac? I'm not
a high power user of word, but do use it for very basic documents. Is there
much difference in creating and editing documents on a Mac?

How about email? I really don't like web based email. I prefer to download
my email to Outlook Express. I like the Outlook Express layout, and the
ease in creating folders and mail rules. Can I download my email on the
Mac?
I'll probably come up with lots more questions. But, these are the ones
I've been really wondering about for quite some time.

Thanks,

Karen P

It will be very, very different, so don't go into this thinking it's just a
matter of learning a few new keystrokes. It's not better or worse overall, just
way different.

 1. Is there a braille transcription program available? I currently use
Duxbury, with a 15 year old Index Everest embosser. I'm open to using a

There is, but I have little experience with it and it is nothing like DBT.
However, I've heard rumors that DBT will be released for Mac sometime in the
future, so this question may be moot at some point.

 2. How about OCR? I currently use Kurzweil 1000.
There are several options, and everyone will tell you a different app or set of
apps to use. The general consensus seems to be Abbyy Fine Reader, Docuscan
Plus, or Prizmo as a somewhat distant third.

 3. Are there any music notation programs that will work on the Mac? I

If it's only basic editing you need, then Text Edit, which is built into every
Mac, will do fine. It supports saving files as .txt, .rtf, and .doc, and it can
read .docx files. You can bold, underline, italicize, justify, center, change
color, and even insert lists or images. The only porlbem is that Voiceover
currently has trouble with tables in files, but we're all hoping that will be
fixed in the next major OS10 update due out in a few weeks.

How about email? I really don't like web based email. I prefer to download
my email to Outlook Express. I like the Outlook Express layout, and the ease
in creating folders and mail rules. Can I download my email on the Mac?
The Mc's Mail app is really nice and handles multiple email accounts in a great
interface. Rules, folders and so on are all easily set up.

I'll probably come up with lots more questions. But, these are the ones I've
been really wondering about for quite some time.
Keep them coming. The more you can learn beforehand, the better you can prepare
for the big change, or know that a Mac is not for you.

 Thanks,

Re: New to the list, with lots of questions

2013-09-02 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
As I said in a post I wrote one time on file management, that was my biggest
problem is switching to the Mac. As an experienced computer user, it took me
about two weeks to get used to the Mac. It's not that file management is hard,
it's just enough different that I had a little trouble until I figure out how
to handle it better. So when you get there, if you get there, let us know.

Of course, everybody handles things differently, but it might be better if you
make your switch before your Windows computer is gone completely. This is
because if you have any projects that you have to get done desperately like the
next day, it will cut down on your stress level in the first two or three
weeks. However, if you think that you will tend to gravitate to your Windows
computer instead of learning, then this might not be a good thing.

I have avoided this like the plague, but it is possible to install windows on a
Macintosh computer. Some people on this list have done this, and they may want
to tell you if that's a good thing for you to do.
Regards,
Gigi

and it can read .docx files. You can bold, underline, italicize, justify,
center, change color, and even insert lists or images. The only porlbem is
that Voiceover currently has trouble with tables in files, but we're all
hoping that will be fixed in the next major OS10 update due out in a few
 weeks.

How about email? I really don't like web based email. I prefer to download
my email to Outlook Express. I like the Outlook Express layout, and the
ease in creating folders and mail rules. Can I download my email on the Mac?
The Mc's Mail app is really nice and handles multiple email accounts in a
great interface. Rules, folders and so on are all easily set up.

I'll probably come up with lots more questions. But, these are the ones
I've been really wondering about for quite some time.
Keep them coming. The more you can learn beforehand, the better you can
prepare for the big change, or know that a Mac is not for you.

 Thanks,

Re: New to the list, with lots of questions

2013-09-02 Thread Mary Otten
The question to ask yourself is, why am I considering switching to a Mac?

Like you, I am a K1000 user and also a Window Eyes user.I'm not a power user of
Word either, but I love the simplicity of printing directly to my Index
embosser from within Word just by accessing the Duxbury item in Word's menu and
embossing directly from there. No hassle. No 3 programs to switch among and
mess with. As was mentioned, Duxbury is apparently working on a Mac version of
their program. What will its capability and accessibility be, especially since
Word on the Mac is inaccessible? Will it work with Text Edit or Pages? Nobody
knows, but one thing we do know: it won't be free. And you already own the
Windows version.

I don't know how many of the K1000 features you take advantage of. But I can
say without doubt that there is no equivalent on the Mac side. There are
solutions, and one or another might meet your needs, depending on what those
are. But since you've already paid the money for K1000, what prompts you to
want to switch? You could consider running Windows on a Mac, either via
bootcamp, the solution I chose, or via VMWare Fusion.

I bought my Mac 4 years ago with the hope that, by the time my Windows xp
machine had to go, scanning and word processing and embossing would have
matured to the level they are on Windows for blind users. Such is not the case,
which is why I am sticking with Windows for some things. If you are not one of
the I hate Microsoft ideologs, who want to use a Mac because they can and
because they just plain don't like MS, then consider carefully before you
decide to take on a whole new os with its attendant learning curve.

If you're moving to a Mac because you will save money on screen readers,
consider that the machine alone is liable to cost you more than a pc, and that
you could put that savings towards the cost of keeping up your screen reader
subscription, or you could try the NVDA screen reader, which is free and quite
good for lots of things. I'm not saying Macs are bad. I'm not saying they're
not a good solution for somebody who doesn't have an investment in Windows
applications that are specialized, like K1000 and a screen reader. I'm just
suggesting that you should analyze your needs and why you are considering the
switch. I love the Apple mail program. I can't compare it with Outlook Express,
because I never used that program. Good luck with the decision.\

Re: uploading to an ftp server using ciberduck.

2013-09-02 Thread Edward Green
Hi Jessica,

Option up arrow is the Cyberduck shortcut for uploading files. You'll see the
standard open dialog when you invoke this command, from where you will choose
the file(s) you want to upload.

I take it you've already discovered the list of files/folders on the server
where you'll be uploading to.

Cheers,

Ed

Re: New bug with vO and the podcast app on IOS

2013-09-02 Thread Shen
Replying to your email late.
Yes, I have been having the exact same issue on my iPhone 5.
On my wife's iPhone 4S, she is not having the same issue, but she is having the
app crash consistently. The phone's diagnostics is full of Podcast app crash
reports.
It's ridiculous.
I would recommend going to another podcast app, like iCatcher or Downcast. I
use iCatcher and find it really good.
If something doesn't work, the developer usually responds to my email within
the same day.

 Hi all,
Has anybody else noticed a new bug with the Apple podcast app on ios? Since
the update of this week, when I go to play a podcast, the phone freezes and
nothing plays. Eventually, I can tripple click home VO off and on again and
everything returns to normal. I can then play the podcast as normal I'm
getting this consistently now so wonder if anybody else is experiencing this.
 I'm using an iPhone 5.
