Hi.

I have just got an update to the Voice Dream Reader, is it the update, or are
we waiting another update.

Best Annie.

The developer of Voice Dream Reader just sent out a warning about iOS7 and
his app. VDR *will* break under iOS7, so do NOT update your iOS device if
you use this app. However, there will be an update, hopefully within a
week, to address the problems and get VDR compatible. Better still, the
update will make all the iOS high-quality voices Siri can use available for
use as voices to read with in VDR, for free. So, if you update iOS on
Wednesday, you'll be waiting a few days until you can use VDR again, but
once VDR is updated you can use iOS7's new enhanced voices to read your
 files.

From the release notes, it looks like the update released yesterday (September

OFF topic, Skype in mac doesn't find my iSight Camara

2013-09-17 Thread Daniela Rubio
Hello all.
I don't know if somebody has experienced this, but since some days on, Skype
won't let me do video calls or send video messages, because it says that there
is no Camara in my devise. I go to preferences, Audio and video, and there it
is, No camera found.
My mac is an 11 inch Macbook air last generation and the camera is working
properly in FaceTime, Photo Booth and quicktime.
Any ideas about why Skype doesn't want it?
Thank you very much!

Re: Word processor

2013-09-17 Thread David Eagle
Hi Alex, I've used markdown a bit. I'll have to explore it in a bit more
detail. I do use HTML quite a lot on my website. Anyway, I downloaded Pages
and was able to use it, although I was surprised to find that there were
separate areas for header, body and footer. I assumed that it would just
work like Microsoft Word on Windows where you select the text you want to
make a heading and hen apply a heading to it in the menu or with a keyboard
shortcut. I'm a bit confused as to how the headers thing works in Pages?
Any idea?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Word processor

2013-09-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello David,

Headers and Footers in Pages are fields that appear on every printed page and
should not be confused with headings or footnotes.

Headings, subheadings, etc are configured in the Styles drawer and you can set
up to 8 hotkeys for these.

When you save a template, the configured hotkeys are saved with it.

I can't explain things with reference to Word as I'm not familiar with Word.

Cheers,

Transmit FTP software briefly on sale (Tuesday, September 17, 2013) for half price ($17)

2013-09-17 Thread Esther
Hi all,

The file transfer software many of us recommend for the Mac is Transmit by
Panic, which almost never goes on sale. For about the next 8 hours, until
11:59 a.m. PST today (Tuesday, September 17, 2013), you can get this for
half price $16.99 in the Mac App Store:
• Transmit by Panic ($16.99 until 11:59 a.m. PST Tuesday, September 17,
2013)
https://itunes.apple.com/app/transmit/id403388562?mt=12

If you're not on a current version Mac and want to buy this software while
it is on sale, or if you want to upgrade version 3 of Transmit for half
price ($9), here's the link they emailed me, which appears to be accessible:
http://elist.panic.com/t/y-l-ttihbl-urdukuldj-c/

This will be Mavericks ready, too. Someone at Panic realized Transmit had
been around for 15 years, and decided to put this up on a 24-hour sale.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Correction in the time zone offset. There is only 4 hours and 40 minutes
that this app will stay at half price.

Re: Word processor

2013-09-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello David,

First of all, when you open a Pages document, go to the View menu and hide
everything you can. Also, never use Quick Nav in Pages. Once you have some text
in your document, press Cmd-Shift-t to show the styles drawer.

Stop interacting with everything and navigate left past the Toolbar to the
drawer and interact. Navigate right and interact with the Paragraph styles
table. There you should find what you're looking for. You set a hotkey by
getting a contextual menu on the style you want and pressing h for hotkey.
The submenu offers you the available hotkeys which are F1 to F8.

Cheers,

Anne

I first chose her for reading out long passages of text: stories, articles,
letters, etc. So far, I'm really enjoying her for this.

I made her my system voice and loaded her up onto my iPod Nano. Lol, she does
pretty well, but really mangles some composer names.

Is the purchasing process fairly painless?

dropbox on the Mac

2013-09-17 Thread Mary Otten
I may be the last person on this list to get dropbox. I know there has been a
lot of discussion about the app, but since I ran Snow Leopard, I didn't bother
with it. I have now installed the application and I can see the icon in the
extras menu. However, I can't actually access the menu. What is the work around
for this lack of keyboard access? Or do you have to do everything from the web?
That would be off putting.

I've never bought a voice, so I can't answer that.

I believe you visit this site:

You'll download the infoVox control manager and each voice has a 30-day trial.
You don't have to demo them all at one time. :)

There are only two heading levels by default, but you can add as many as you

If you can't find it, I'll give you sensible instructions in a few days when I

Re: Word processor

2013-09-17 Thread Edward Green
Hi Anne,

Thanks for the hints you send David on Pages.

How do I bring up the contextual menu on the paragraph style in Pages? I tried
VO shift m but it didn't seem to work even though it works elsewhere in Pages.

Many thanks,

Ed

If you can't find it, I'll give you sensible instructions in a few days when
I get back from training a teacher to use VoiceOver.

First of all, when you open a Pages document, go to the View menu and hide

Stop interacting with everything and navigate left past the Toolbar to the
drawer and interact. Navigate right and interact with the Paragraph styles
table. There you should find what you're looking for. You set a hotkey by
getting a contextual menu on the style you want and pressing h for hotkey.
The submenu offers you the available hotkeys which are F1 to F8.

Re: Word processor

2013-09-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Ed,

I'd forgotten about that oddity. You just do VO-Space to open these menus.
Pages is full of anomalies. I hope they bring out a new version of iWork that
behaves better. It's about time they did.

If you're the kind of person who likes to use standard Mac keyboard short cuts,
don't use Ctrl-F2 to go to the Apple menu in Pages as it interprets this as
just F2. Luckily, VO-m works fine.

Cheers,

Anne

External drive

2013-09-17 Thread Agent086b
Hi,
I am looking for an external drive to backup my Mac.
What should I look for in a drive? I am thinking about a Terabyte or so.
Also how would I format that drive?
Thanks as always for any advice.
Max.

Hi.
Well, to play the others if you hit space on the button it should just
automatically play. I am able to play them here.
Also, that program only works for windows and is quite complex to actually sit
down for many days and record all these sentences.

Re: Backing Up My iPhone 4S

2013-09-17 Thread Dave
Keep in mind that an iCloud backup is always a good idea, but doesn't back
up everything.

A better solution is to connect your various devices to your computer and
have iTunes do a backup. This enables you to restore apps, pictures, music,
and mail.

Re: Backing Up My iPhone 4S

2013-09-17 Thread Desi Noller
Exactly, and this is really what I want to do, but when I plug my iPhone into
my iMac and go into the devices menu under the file menu, backup is dimmed.
I'm not sure how to undim it. Also I thought my Apps would automatically
update when I plug my phone into the Mac, but I seem to have 19 updates
available. This perplexes me because I keep my Apps up-to-date all the time,
and thought that when my phone synced with my computer those updates listed on
my computer should disappear. I am so clueless when it comes to this stuff!
Just when I think I understand things, I get more confused!

airfoil for Mac

2013-09-17 Thread Mary Otten
I have been a satisfied user of the AirFoil application from RogueAmoeba
software. Now that I have finally upgraded to Mountain Lion and could use the
newer version, I'm wondering what advantages it confers on its users, since we
have airplay in so many applications these days. For those of you running ML
and useing AirFoil, what functionality does it add that you don't get from
airplay or the extra functionality in apps like Radium that give you access to
the connected stereo or apple tv?

Re: External drive

2013-09-17 Thread Phil Halton
I use a LaCie 2 terabyte firewire/USB drive. And, I think it's a discontinued
model - the latest LaCie's are 3 tb or greater. I use firewire because it is
the only mode that allows for booting off the external - you can't boot from a
USB drive. I have it split into four partitions, 2 for bootable images of both
my MacbookAir and iMac, and 2 partitions for data storage. It's more space than
I'll ever probably use. I bought if from the local Apple store.

Use disk utility to partition and format it using Mac journaling format if its
intended use is strictly for the mac. Otherwise, fat will work for both windows
and mac (either fat, or fat32, I can't remember which)

FAT32 should work. Remember, though, that you can't store files greater than
4gb on a FAT32 formatted drive. Stick to the Mac format if possible, or you
might run into problems with huge files. Just something to keep in mind.
