Re: vlc and air play
Everything Mavericks is 64-bit so the plugin will fail. If I recall, Ogg Drop just messes with the file types so iTunes would recognize it as a sound file. That was the second step if the quicktime ogg plugin had worked. If you're willing to convert the ogg files to something iTunes is happy with then there probably are utilities to do that. Re: Ftp server using the server app
Depends on which vintage of OSX you are running. FTP was dropped from the sharing control panel a while ago but some variant of sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist will get it going again. The port issue will still exist along with security problems with FTP in general. It's been a while since I checked into this but in addition to opening port 21, once the connection is established the FTP server will do all future connections through one or more other ports chosen from a pool of available ports, usually ports 1024-5000. So you have to have in and out traffic allowed on all those ports in your firewall, which is why security people frown on FTP. sftp only needs port 22, which is the same port as ssh. Also ftp sends all text in the clear such as usernames and passwords while sftp encrypts everything. Just some stuff to google and think about. If you're just doing this on your own internal network the sftp advantages disappear. CB On 1/3/14 8:16 AM, Kjsc Radio wrote: There is two ways to enable it. Re: Can I listen to the BBC from my Apple TV
Hi Gena, You can certainly get some BBC radio stations on the Apple TV, but I’m not convinced it’s the most straight forward way to listen to them. Essentially, when you click on a category of radio station, you are presented with a list of stations in that category in alphabetical order. Many US stations start with numerals rather than a letter, so these will appear first. The problem is that you have to know in which category the station you want to listen to will appear. It’s easy for me as any BBC station I want will either be in sport or news, but I don’t know if their music stations appear across several categories. I don’t believe it's possible to search for a radio station though I’d be happy to stand corrected. If you only want national BBC stations, it’s probably far simpler to get those through Freeview/satellite/cable, assuming you have one of these services on your TV set in addition to your Apple TV. Yeah, I know it can. My recipes are so scattered and just notes. I'm taking the time to make them a bit more thorough and complete while I'm manually importing them. As Laura described, you press the Save Recipe button in the toolbar of the Paprika Mac app window to clip recipes from web sites. As a quick overview, you can navigate to recipes in web sites in the Browser view either by using the Google search text field in the HTML area to do a general search of recipe sites, and then select links that you want, followed by using the Save Recipe button, or you can select one of the web site links in the HTML area under the headings for Recommended Sites, such as Foodnet.com, then search for the the recipe you want at that site's web page, followed by using the Save Recipe button to clip the recipe. Alternatively, since the Browser's Getting Started HTML page with information on how to get started with clipping recipes, the general Google search field, and the links to popular recipe sites only loads up when you first launch the Browser view, you can also navigate to the Google search text field on the window toolbar, or use the Bookmarks button on the window toolbar to navigate to popular web sites (including favorites that you add), and then use the Save Recipe button on the toolbar to clip recipes. This may be a little less convenient than using the corresponding locations for search and links in the startup browser HTML area unless you set an application specific hotspot for these locations, since there are no pre-existing keyboard shortcuts for navigating to the Google search field or to the Bookmarks on the toolbar of the Paprika Recipe Manager app in Browser view the way there are for Safari, but it only takes a few VO-arrow key presses (or flicks if you use the Trackpad) to move between the HTML area and these buttons on the toolbar. If you prefer to use the Getting Started startup HTML page to navigate, you can always move back to it by using VO-Up arrow from the HTML area to navigate to the Browser's Back button, VO-space until you get to the beginning, and focus moves to the Forward button, then VO-Left arrow back to the (dimmed) Back button and VO-Down arrow to return to the HTML area. (Note: I had to use VO-slash to label the four toolbar buttons to the right of the Paprika window's Minimize, Close, and Zoom buttons. These are Back, Forward, Bookmarks, and Refresh. The remaining toolbar elements to the right of these buttons are the URL address field, the Browser - Paprika view identifier, the Search text field, and the Save Recipe button.) Here are a few detailed examples of how to clip recipes, written with new users or those who don't yet have the Mac app in mind. Switch from the Recipes view to the Browser view with VO-Down arrow to the Browser check box and VO-Space. VO-Left arrow to the HTML content, and interact to read the Getting Started instructions. You can launch your first search from within the HTML area instead of from the toolbar. If you have Quick Nav turned on, and you have enabled single letter navigation under VoiceOver Utility in Commanders under the Quick Nav tab by checking the box, you can use all the standard web navigation shortcuts (e.g., h to move to the next header or f to move to the next text field). So, press h to move through the headings for Getting Started, How to clip a recipe online, and Search for recipes. Or press f to move directly to the Google Recipe Search text field under the Search for recipes heading, then toggle Quick Nav mode off (by simultaneously pressing the left and right arrow keys) so you can type in the text field. Using this field, your search will not specify any particular recipe sites, so if I type in text, such as Latin Black Bean Soup, and then either press Return or navigate to the Search button and press it, I'll get a Google search of many different recipes sites, with links to results within the HTML area. Have you tried the latest LibreOffice? It was not working with voiceover last I tried it but I just downloaded the new version today 4.1.4.2 and so far the word processor is working reasonably well. At least I wasn't getting the empty document I used to get. I'm on 10.8 so I couldn't verify if there are issues with Mavericks but other forums say it works if you get the 64-bit OSX build. Re: Missing hard drive
Sounds like you dismounted your drive. You can either unplug and plug it back in, power cycle it, or use Disk Utility to find the drive and mount it again. If you go the Disk Utility route you'll just launch Disk Utility from the Utilities folder (shift-option-U in finder) then find the dive in the disks table and then find the Mount button in the toolbar, right after burn CB . Re: huge mail problems still
After having read some 74 messages in this thread, I thought I would chime in here with a further explanation of VO + J and how I personally prefer to use Mail. First off, VO-J jumps VO to the next control at same level. I absolutely love using this key combination in iTunes; it jumpss me from the table of songs up for playing, the player display window and the artist list. Anyway, this thread concerns Mail. When preview is turned off, you cannot use VO-J to open or focus the message. You have to explicitly open the message in a new window with Return or Command-O. In my case, I am using standard view with previews turned off; for me VO-J jumps be back and forth between the list of mail box folders and the message list. that works just perfectly fine for me. Oh, I also have threading turned on. One big reason why I dislike preview so much is preview causes the message to be marked read by just passing over it with the arrow keys in the message list. I often read messages out of sequence and want to be able to keep track of which is read or unread. As of now, I am still using Mountain Lion so am not sure if this general concept changes with Mavericks or not. Hope this clarifies some things about that hot key. On 12/20/13, Eileen Misrahi eileen.misr...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, The other thing I have noticed is if I don't want to read the email or interact with it using VO-J, I tap on the delete key quickly and I don't hear the number of emails total, unread mail, etc. This has worked well. I am getting better at this and thanks to you Robert, I love that VO-J command. For me, however, having the information read in the order that it is presented works well for me. I hear the subject a brief preview and whether or not the message is part of a thread. I listen to as little or as much of this information as needed with the goal of making a decision regarding whether or not I want to read more of the message or simply move on. This approach seems just perfect to me. On 20/12/2013, at 5:33 pm, Nicholas Parsons mr.nicholas.pars...@gmail.com wrote: The main problem for me with Mavericks Mail is that the read/unread status of messages, and the number of messages in the thread, are announced last by VoiceOver when navigating through the message list. This slows my progress significantly as I have to wait for VoiceOver to announce everything else before I get this important information. I'm interested in whether Robert and others have this issue too, as it seems to me like something that's not dependant on individual settings. My work around for this has been to turn the preview line off in the Viewing tab of Mail Preferences. This way I don't need to listen to the message read out before finding out whether it's read or unread, and how many messages there are in the thread. However, this is a real drawback to me as hearing the preview often allowed me to dismiss a message quickly without needing to open it first. For clarification, I've been doing this on a 2011 MacBook Air. I use Mail in standard view with threading turn on and the preview pane fully collapsed. I read through the list of messages by using the up and down arrows while VO focus is on the message list. I don't interact with the message list table and I do not have QuickNav turned on. To read a message, I use command-o to open it in a new window and then just use the arrow keys to read line by line etcetera (with, of course, QuickNav still turned off). Re: Can I listen to the BBC from my Apple TV
Hello, Much appreciate your time in replying. Yes, I found them. But as you say, it’s not easy. Radio 4 is in the News category, 4 Extra in comedy and radio 2 in adult contemporary. I was going to use my free view box but 4 extra isn’t available. Well at least it’s fun exploring all the opportunities available to us now. Thanks. Gena On 3 Jan 2014, at 17:05, Edward Green ergreen1...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Gena, You can certainly get some BBC radio stations on the Apple TV, but I’m not convinced it’s the most straight forward way to listen to them. So i would like to see if it was the same with virtual machine or hoping that external was 10 seconds faster than the iMacs internal fusion drive. The match ended in a draw. Dammit. In my case it was a tie. The LaCie rugged was connected to usb. Should not be any difference with this disk connected to thunderbolt or usb 3.0. I could not find out if it is possible to run both at same time, but i could install both with the same serial number. Re: Internal vs External Fusion
So how long did it actually take from hitting play to being up and running? From the reviews of the LaCie Rugged 120GB SSD drives it should have about 112MBs read and 92MBs write on USB3 compared to 155MBs read and 150MBs write on Thunderbolt. So Thunderbolt should only gain you about 30-40% speed increase or reduction in boot time, assuming that bootup is mostly I/O bound. embossing from the mac
Sherryl: I have also tried Louis but couldn't figure it out either. I could go through the steps of translating a file I guess but could never find the translated file. There didn't seem to be a place to specify where the output file should go. So I gave up on it and went back to using Robo Braille. The problem with that is that you need to be connected to the internet and there is apparently no way to translate from Braille to print. Any insights about how to specify where the output file should go would be appreciated. Then again, it is possible I was doing something else wrong. I found no good documentation and writing to the developers yielded no results. Maybe I will try it again as I would like to have a braille translator that can be used off line. . Re: Can I listen to the BBC from my Apple TV
Hi Gena, nice to hear that someone listens to radio4extra. I too listen to that radio station quite a lot really. :) If all else fails and you have wi-fi and a reasonable data plan then there’s always the website where you can access the content. I do this from my Mac and I have never had any trouble really using it. www.bbc.co.uk/radio4extra Thanks Daniel On 3 Jan 2014, at 22:42, Georgina Joyce g...@gena-j.me.uk wrote: Hello, Much appreciate your time in replying. Re: Embossing from a Mac..
Hello Chris, Smacks forehead on desk. I am an idiot. I was trying to get OpenOffice and LibreOffice from a installation back when I got my Mac last March… I fail. I spent almost all day doing research allay and never though I’d update the apps! sees. So that’s what I did, I updated both OpenOffice and Libre, and OpenOffice is still having Voiceover problems, but it loos like Libre is now user friendly. Now, it is maybe my Mac needs a reboot, but both apps quit unexpedatly when I close them. So I don’t know that is a problem or not. Now I’m am trying to install a Libre extension called odt2 that is supposed to translate to braille. I know my braille instructor does that on a Windows machine. When I had my Mountain Lion, Openoffice and libreoffice worked, just can’t hear what I typed, but if I hit VO l, it will read back to me just fine. I found a text reader extensions, but the real problem is that the two apps just won’t run on Maverick, and i see that others are having that problem. So, for us on the Mac it is Text Edit, or Pages... Daniel Hawkins - Posted from my Macbook Pro 2012 15in. So I did research allay, and I found out that you can print braille using Openoffice or libreOffice. With a odt2 extension. Now here is a kicker, Appentenly LibreOffice and OpenOffice is not accessible on a Mac, only on Snow Lepord. And now with Maverick, those two apps won’t run at all. So, does anyone have a solution to emboss from a Mac? Or is the only solution is to still run Windows? Thanks! Daniel Hawkins - Posted from my Macbook Pro 2012 15in. Re: Internal vs External Fusion
I am using the timer on iPhone. Hitting restart on Windows and as fast as i can double tapping on the timer. A couple of days back i did restart and watched the timer when the LaCie was connected to thunderbolt. The iMac fusion drive is in fact about 5-7 seconds faster when hitting restart and the sound for landing in Windows again occur. So, this means that LaCie connected to usb 3.0 was about 5-7 seconds faster than thunderbolt. I will try to restart with thunderbolt about ten times later tomorrow or in a couple of days to be sure. Last time i did this test only two times. iMacs fusion drive had more top time i.e. consistence at the top speed, but the LaCie was up there a couple of times, but was about 5 seconds behind a couple of times. Insanely fast at the best. I have to type the log in password and especially one time i was surprised of how fast and miss spelled. The best iMac late 2014 will be a killer machine. Take care 4. jan. 2014 kl. 04:55 skrev Chris Blouch cblo...@aol.com: So how long did it actually take from hitting play to being up and running? From the reviews of the LaCie Rugged 120GB SSD drives it should have about 112MBs read and 92MBs write on USB3 compared to 155MBs read and 150MBs write on Thunderbolt. So Thunderbolt should only gain you about 30-40% speed increase or reduction in boot time, assuming that bootup is mostly I/O bound. I was disappointed to find out that Windows running in boot camp on iMac, did not use iMac internal fusion drive, only the spinning drive. That said, i hav not confirmed that the went through Microsofts servers and was activated have to check that tomorrow. VMWare looks like a very goodf peace of software. I suspended it in the middle of 141 Windows updates and it resumed from where it was when suspended. I just hit the play button. Funny program. I am just testing a quite a lot before i find the best setup for this system. Then i will take backup and relaxe with it and stay in Mountain Lion for many years.
