Re: Tandom equivalent for the Mac
Hi Sabahattin, Regarding your comment about running OS X Server headlessly, I'm wondering what problems you're experiencing? I run multiple Mavericks servers headlessly without problems, at least as far as I can tell. Whether using the Server app from another computer, using the Server app on the headless server or going in via ssh, everything seems to work as it should for me. I could be missing something, so would be interested to know. Using ARD with VO to do regular admin tasks is fine, but taking it over, like you've mentioned, is where the huge problems come in from a VO prospective. Regular keyboard actions are passed through fine but as soon as you press your VO keys, focus is brought back to the original machine. Pain in the neck in my world. Later... Re: Recommendations for learning to program on a Mac
But again, those are simply features of Objective-C. If you simply don't use Objective-C features and therefore Objective-C syntax, your program is valid C source. So if you learn the entire grammar of Objective-C, you also know the entire grammar of C, no matter how incidental it is to your use of Objective-C. This simply can't be said for C++ or Java (the latter, BTW, much closer to Smalltalk in OO semantics, and also to Objective-C). Now if you were to say that "Learning Objective-C does not result in a well-disciplined C programmer capable of withstanding the rigours of procedural programming", I'd definitely be inclined to agree with you. But if people are going to learn to write iOS and Mac apps, it seems to me that Objective-C is a much better place to be if you intend writing other C programs in future, because you'll be able to use your knowledge to understand both C and many other languages. Swift simply breaks from C in order to emphasise Apple's frameworks, which makes me sad. Anyway, I think I've gone way off-course for this list, so I'll stop now. But feel free to write me privately if you'd like to continue. :) Cheers, Sabahattin -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Recommendations for learning to program on a Mac
Objective C is a super set of C. It is the objective component of C. If someone learns objc, it is a reasonable assumption that they have a lot of C experience. If they don't' then they are going to have to learn C. You never just right a program in OBJC. You always have C mixed in with it. You don't use one with out the other. ARC is a compiler feature that you can turn off and there's still a lot of projects out there that don't even use ARC. This is all considered legacy by Apple at this point as they have maid it very clear that Swift is their programming language going forward. That's not to say that everybody is going to rewrite their apps in Swift immediately, but it is going to be fazed out at some point. Probably within the next four years are so. And yeah, it does make sense. On Jul 5, 2014, at 9:12 PM, Littlefield, Tyler wrote: I beg to differ. Learning objective c -does not- mean that you know c. Re: iCloud and online storage
Hi Robert, If you just want the sync part, there is BitTorrent Sync or SyncThing. These tools let you replicate changes across computers, in the fashion of Dropbox, but without a central server. However, dumb clients like iOS devices can't access the data unless one of your machines is online at the time, and of course you don't get the convenience of maintaining a master copy and you'll have to remember to sync before a sync device is taken offline, or maintain a Mac 24/7 (I suggest a Mac Mini) to keep your master. Yes, it's not as easy as Dropbox or iCloud, but it's safer. In my opinion, Snowden showed us the power and determination of the US and British secret services, and their willingness to employ a tremendous battery of bulk surveillance tactics against innocent people. I think that's an attack which we should all defend ourselves against to the best of our abilities. I know, I know, but you don't have to be paranoid to care about your privacy. Just take steps to make it harder for the snoops, even if only a little bit. Cheers, Sabahattin -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Downloading public previews
If you've signed up as an Apple developer, go to developer.apple.com and sign in with your Apple ID. Visit your Member Centre page, and you should find links to your enrolled programs there. All that is required to begin receiving seed updates is a one-time change to your Software Update configuration, which you can find instructions for making at the downloads page for OS X Mavericks. Be aware that both Mavericks and Yosemite now have public previews available for access by non-developers for testing, unlike iOS. These don't cost anything, but don't appear to be released quite as frequently as the release seeds for developers and, in the case of Yosemite, aren't even guaranteed to be available to all who ask. Re: iCloud and online storage
Losing data is only a real concern if you lose access to your account; big companies like Google, Dropbox, Apple, and so on have so many redundancies in place that data loss on their end is really not a concern over which I lose sleep. Again, though, losing access to your account is a different matter, and it is why I enable two-factor authentication on everything I can, especially my Apple ID. iCloud Drive is a feature that Apple announced at WWDC this year, and it will debut with the release of OS X Yosemite and iOS8 in the fall. It is basically a place where you can store files and folders, and those items become visible across all iCloud-enabled devices. So, you can save a text file in your iCloud drive and work on it with Text Edit on the Mac, then open up that same file with Pages or Nebulous on iOS, and you're still working with the same file. Given that this feature will coincide with a drop in iCloud storage prices, it becomes a great way to back up your data while making it accessible across all your devices. Computers get stolen, memory sticks get lost, all sorts of things that we think are more secure than the cloud aren't necessarily so. I love my Google Drive. That is not to say that it is only accessible when you are online, though; Dropbox copies everything to your local hard drive (or gives you the option to do so on iOS) so even if you have no internet access you can still get to your files and folders. The down side is definitely security; the government can see your files, depending on the service you use, or someone who manages to hack into your account can do serious damage. That is why I'm excited for iCloud Drive; enable two-factor authentication, and it is suddenly almost impossible for anyone to access your files. These are just my thoughts, and I'm not a security expert or anything. Personally, though, I'm fine with putting my essential files (writing projects, programming projects, resumes, and other essentials) in Dropbox, thus ensuring they are always backed up no matter what happens to my local machines. Of course, services like Crashplan or Carbonite can do similar things, but I prefer to just store the essentials in the cloud; it costs less and it easier to manage when a restore is necessary. Re: Recommendations for learning to program on a Mac
I should have been clearer when I said that by learning Objective C one would inherently know how to program in C, because I really meant to emphasise that it's C you should learn, but as it happens it's actually the case, because Objective-C is a proper superset of C, unlike C++. So while you might learn Objective-C simply to operate within Apple's infrastructure, still you are learning the C language, which is just Objective-C without the object-oriented bits. Unfortunately, too many people come to C with the expectation that it's as high-level as it looks, which is of course not the case, though it's an easy mistake to make. The ebook is Apple's official description of the language, a bit like "The C Programming Language" (also on iBooks) is the canonical tome for C programmers. Highly recommended. Re: Recommendations for learning to program on a Mac
I have one point to make here: Learning objective c doesn't mean that one inherently knows C. C does not have ARC for example. Just as learning c++ does not really mean one knows C. Swift may be the language they want you to use eventually because it has a higher-level feel to it, but I don't foresee them phasing out objective c at any point. it wouldn't really make much sense. Re: Managing Gmail
Gmail IMAP is broken to the point that any rational human being would struggle to understand how its designers created it the way they did. Indeed, as you discovered, deletion operations take an extraordinarily long time, during which the messages are still available. Don't worry; eventually they will disappear. If you want to make Gmail faster and less privacy-invasive, you may arrange for it to delete mail immediately when you remove it from the Trash, instead of archiving it under All Mail. You may also switch off All Mail, in order to make the client download only one copy of every message. Or you could just switch to iCloud. That's what you're paying for, after all. :) Cheers, Sabahattin -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Tandom equivalent for the Mac
Apple has Apple Remote Desktop, for which the client and server parts are already in the operating system, but for which the user interface is exposed fully by the paid ARD application. BTMM (Back To My Mac) is a specific method for accessing services on a remote Mac with the help of Apple's infrastructure. It supports Screen Sharing as well as any other service, like file sharing, that is advertised using Bonjour. For what it is, it's pretty cool, but it does require that your home router support UPnP or NAT-PMP to work, which increasingly won't be the case now that public IP addresses are in short supply. I asked Apple Accessibility to take some feedback I had about ARD. My advice is don't bother, because you can't use the keyboard to grab or ungrab the controlling device; otherwise, it'd work as well as any other method requiring the audio be piped back to you, i.e. using Skype. Incidentally, it's also a real bummer for those running OS X Server, because operating a Mac completely headlessly when you're without sight turns out to be more-or-less impossible now that the Server app is on the Mac App Store. Hi Alex, Yeah, I get the same thing. My first thought was just that this was part of the vetting process for new subscribers, because I've only recently rejoined here. I don't do this on my Google groups, and as far as I can see all other GG traffic goes to where it needs to be. But you might like to ask Cara to clarify, since I may be wrong about that. BTW, as a general rule, it's easiest to transfer your "Reputation" by asking Google to change your email address at your Google account, rather than unsubscribing and then resubscribing by email. Yes, this way you must meet the Google interface, which is of course horrible, but it works well enough to do this on the Mac, and saves you all the trouble of resubscribing. Re: Frustrations with updating Adobe Flash player
I got it to the point where it asked if I wanted to open, and I did, but I keep receiving a message that it can't be opened. I went into my applications and downloads folders and deleted the .dmg files, thinking I would redownload, but my finder and desktop are still saying "install adobe flash player, selected application." Re: accessible flight simulator or racing game etc for OSX or iOS?
Wait though, is this for VoiceOver? Or does it use some other means of representing the world that is somehow accessible? I just can't imagine such a complex, realistic app being made for VO users, but of course I'd be happy to find out it is. :) On Jul 5, 2014, at 6:02 PM, Sandi Jazmin Kruse wrote: > hi, there is flight gear, it works 100% for mac but the learning curve > is massive, cause of its realism. > If you are serious about trying it out i will happily send some files > and a manual in how too install it , but as i said , it is not like > all these blind games for windows, it is a true simulator, it means > that up on other things that you have prop wash and ground effect and > stuff like that , so using a bit of time on www.faa.gov, may not be a > bad idea. > But as i said if anyone is interested i will happily make a short read > me and we can take it from there ,. > > > Sandi > > > > On 7/5/14, Cameron Strife wrote: >> Hi. Re: accessible flight simulator or racing game etc for OSX or iOS?
hi, there is flight gear, it works 100% for mac but the learning curve is massive, cause of its realism. If you are serious about trying it out i will happily send some files and a manual in how too install it , but as i said , it is not like all these blind games for windows, it is a true simulator, it means that up on other things that you have prop wash and ground effect and stuff like that , so using a bit of time on www.faa.gov, may not be a bad idea. Re: Highlighting a column in Numbers
Hi, Press VO-shift-back slash, then arrow down once. VO will announce "Column", press return. When in the Column Headers, VO-space on the column you wish selected in its entirety. Back out of the headers with VO-shift-back-slash and Stop Interacting with the Table. If you bring focus back to the Table without Interacting with it, VO should read so many rows, so many columns and announce that that many rows are selected. If you wish to format these selected cells, go into the Formatter area and do so. If you Interact With the Table, the selected cells should remain selected as long as you don't move to a different cell. Re: NFB store
The site is usable, but instead of using CSS for layout they use tables. Depending on some settings in VoiceOver you might need to do a bit more interacting then you would with JAWS. VoiceOver tends to not hide as many layout tables as the windows screen readers do. You can still get a list of links but I needed to hit three links to find a table with information about three men's braille watches. Re: Tandom equivalent for the Mac
Tandom is an implementation of the VNC protocol. I expect as long as sound is transferred too, that you might be able to use VNC clients and servers on the Macintosh to accomplish this. Also, Apple provides "Back to my Mac" services that allow at least sighted individuals to control a computer remotely. There is also screen sharing, but the screen sharing (which does use a variant of VNC) is not designed to work beyond the local network as seamlessly as Back to my MAC does. Re: Managing Gmail
I would recommend against disabling this mail box at this time. Apple only retrieves messages from the All mail box when using GMAIL and then associates them with a more specific label/folder. There is an option in the GMAIL settings to limit the number of messages to allow in any folder and that might improve GMAIL performance. I created a smart folder called "Old list items" that finds all messages in my list folder that are unread and older then 15 days. I then select all / delete. This is a little less intuitive on the Mac then on IOS devices where there is either an ARCHIVE or TRASH button and if you hold down on the button (double tab with hold for VO users) then you can trash in a mailbox that defaults to ARCHIVE. Re: calendar questions
hello: I seem to have gotten it set up. there is a default calendar which made my life easier (thanks for that tip). The only hurtle now is that for whatever reason when I choose a date, it still tries to add for today. so I have my day view set to jul 18 and the default day on the calendar is jul 5. thanks for the workflow tips--It would end up changing, the only thing I can really set for sure is the calendar and time zone, but that was already set. Re: AppleScript (was calendar questions)
There are certainly graphic conversion commands in Apple Script. You can also use the "save as" directive and I believe in most applications there is a type argument that can be specified. I can look a bit further if you let me know source and destination and if I have a program that can handle the source type. Yes, though a workflow might be better for that. Check out the Automator app built into every Mac to create workflows. messages being delayed?
Hi all, I've noticed that, sometimes, my messages get delayed. Sometimes it's only a few minutes, which is fine, but every so often I'll see a reply I sent appear a day or three after it should have. For instance, I replied with a message about Team Viewer when people were asking about an alternative to Jaws Tandem. I sent the reply the day the thread was started, which was three days ago I think, but only saw that reply on the list this morning. The really odd thing is that I've only noticed this since I switched over to using iCloud email instead of Gmail. Is this normal? Am I seeing delays when, in fact, everyone else sees my messages arriving normally? I'm more curious than anything, but it can be aggravating to try to jump into a discussion but not actually be part of it for days. -- Have a great day, Alex Hall mehg...@icloud.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. calendar questions
Hello all: I had a couple questions: I'm adding a ton of events to one calendar and trying to make this quick. 1) Can I set the default calendar to add events to for a while? 2) Even though I choose the day, for whatever reason every time I add a new event I have to choose the exact day again. can I just move day by day and add events? 3) I turned timezone on, can I set a default timezone so I don't have to choose that every time? This is incredibly slow work, so any advice would be awesome. Re: Recommendations for learning to program on a Mac
Again, no one can even use Swift right now; you'll need Xcode 6, or at least a beta of it. Plus, even as Swift takes over, plenty of the tutorials you find will continue to be in Objective-C. Finally, most Cocoa and Cocoa Touch headers will be in Objective-C for quite a while, I imagine, so if you ever look at those to figure out how to do something or what a certain function expects, you'll at least need to know how to read the language in a basic way. As I said, I agree that Swift is worth learning and should be a priority, but it's hard to learn a language your computer can't yet recognize. This fall, once Yosemite comes out, that will be different, but for now Objective-C is, to my knowledge, the only language non-beta Macs can run. I'm not even mentioning C or C++. Re: Recommendations for learning to program on a Mac
While I certainly agree that Swift is the future, just remember that you can't do much with it until Yosemite is released with Xcode 6. To my knowledge, and I hope I'm wrong, there is no way to do anything with Swift right now unless you are also testing the Xcode 6 beta, which itself requires a developer account. I'd also suggest learning Objective-c if you can, as there will still be a majority of tutorials, samples, and other'documentation writen for that language for years to come. Re: Frustrations with updating Adobe Flash player
HI, Flash installers react better when you just use the tab and space keys, no VO keys. So, use the tab key to move between elements and use the spacebar to activate the button. VO should announce which element has focus as it lands on it. This dialog is safe, as you've likely set Flash in your System Preferences to automatically notify you and attempt the installation of updates. Later... Clicking the column header you know, a, B, etc. That will select of the column. Re: Highlighting a column in Numbers
I think it asks that because spreadsheets, unlike other documents, require a lot of formatting. They can be very large and you don't want to send a huge spreadsheet to your printer. So, it makes you go through some selection process of what you want to print. That's my best guess. At least that's how it worked on the window side. Good luck. I am not sure. What I do need to know however, is how to print numbers document on my computer. Yesterday when I tried this, it tried to make me select parts of the document. Re: Recommendations for learning to program on a Mac
Hi Dawn, One of the best resources is sitting on your Mac in iTunes. iTunes U has several Mac programming courses that will help you conceptually understand what's happening under the hood of your iDevice. some courses come with material to follow along with, but you can also supplement this by looking up tutorials. I've taken one itunes U course on Python and it was great. Good luck, Kevin On 2014-07-05, at 8:30 AM, Dawn Benbow wrote: > Hi everyone, > > I've been a lurker on this list for a while now. Free is indeed best. :) I recommend simply googling "learn objective-c" to start with, and reading the tutorials you find. Re: Frustrations with updating Adobe Flash player
I wouldn't worry about it. In any case, I would advise you to download the latest flash player from adobe's main site. Just in case, this update that you try to install puts something bad on your system. I'm not trying to frighten you here but I'd advise you to always get something from the original source i.e. website. Or if you have Google Crome just use that. Flash is always up to date with that browser and you don't have to do nothing to install it. I alternate between Safari and Crome all the time. hth Daniel On 5 Jul 2014, at 11:46, Christine Grassman wrote: > I am receiving an update notification regarding adobe Flash player, but > nothing I do is starting the update. Frustrations with updating Adobe Flash player
I am receiving an update notification regarding adobe Flash player, but nothing I do is starting the update. I have tried interacting and hitting vo shift space or enter on download; I have tried interacting with where it says image browser, but I am consistently getting an error noise. I tried simply going to the applications folder and clicking there, and while it seems to open, I am not receiving any indication that it is installing, progressing, or finished. When I interact with HTML, it says empty HTML. Any help is appreciated. Christine -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group.
