Resolving an issue in iOS 8 which makes Bluetooth keyboard not working

2014-09-29 Thread Ein Lee
Hi,

If your Bluetooth keyboard doesn't work with VoiceOver except just a few
functions in iOS 8.0 and iOS 8.0.2, try the following steps to resolve the
issue. Once the problem disappears, it doesn't appear again unless you
change the iPhone language in Settings, General, Language Region. To make
the problem disappear from your iPhone, follow these steps:

1. If you use just one software keyboard, temporarily add an arbitrary one
in Settings, General, Keyboard, Keyboards, Add New Keyboard.
2. Open the Notes app.
3. Create a new note.
4. Press the left arrow key and the right arrow key simultaneously to turn
off the quick navigation option.
5. Hold down the command key and press the space key several times to cycle
through the list of software keyboards.
6. Press the left arrow key and the right arrow key simultaneously to turn
on the quick navigation option.
7. Now your Bluetooth keyboard should work fine except other iOS bugs.
8. You may delete the software keyboard temporarily added at Settings,
General, Keyboard, Keyboards.

This is a copy of the email sent to RiVO customers to resolve the issue (
http://goo.gl/GiBvWy) since we have found that it should also resolve the
problem for other Bluetooth keyboards as well.

Thanks.
Ein

Easily Switching Inputs on the Fly

2014-09-29 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi everyone. Wondering if anyone can help me with a query.
I'm going to be streaming a conference shortly, and won't be using a hardware
mixer as I don't have one that's portable and don't have a need for a portable
option often enough to justify buying one.
I'll be providing commentary via my Blue Yeti microphone. I then want to
switch to the house audio, which will be coming in via a line in to my sound
card. The Yeti and the sound card are two separate input choices under System
Preferences.
I have a couple of questions about this set-up in a mac context.
First, I believe it is possible to combine separate inputs into one virtual
sound device? Since both the Yeti and the sound card have adjustable inputs, I
may be able to have them both going at once and manage them via their
respective input controls. Any advice on if this is possible, and if so, how,
is much appreciated.
Second, if this isn't possible, do utilities exist that allow you to switch
inputs via function keys or some other method more easy than changing the input
in System Preferences? I would love to be able to switch from one input to
another at the touch of a button.
Any help very much appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Up half the night trying to change my IP address… Help!!!!

2014-09-29 Thread Christine Grassman
Took the plunge last night and updated to Mavericks. After everything was
installed, I could not connect to the Internet, even though my Wi-Fi is showing.
It says that my Wi-Fi connection has a self-selected address; all other devices
in the house are connecting fine.
The IP address is not correct; however, I cannot change it. When I going to
network preferences, all but the first choice are dimmed. I cannot enter an
address manually, and cannot change the one which is showing.
I have tried rebooting the computer; I have tried disconnecting and
reconnecting the router. I have tried renewing the DHCP lease. Absolutely
nothing is working. I am at my wits end.

I called Verizon, and they told me that they have had this issue with MacBooks

Re: Easily Switching Inputs on the Fly

2014-09-29 Thread Alex Hall
I may be too late for your conference, but hopefully this will help in the
future.

First, you'll want to make a multi output device in the Audio Midi Setup app.
Launch the app, find and activate the Create New Device menu button, choose
multi-output device from the menu, and a new device will be placed in the
devices table near the top of the window. Select that device, then find the
unlabeled table further along. This table lists all the output devices on the
computer; check the box next to all the ones you want to use and that should be
it. You can now switch to that device (remember to set VoiceOver however you
need to so you'll still have speech, or leave a display connected).

As to quickly switching, I imagine there's a utility for that, possibly on
MacUpdate.com. If not, AppleScript may be able to do the job, though I've never
looked into that possibility.

Re: Up half the night trying to change my IP address… Help!!!!

2014-09-29 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
It sounds like there is some bad interaction between your Mac's DHCP client and
your router's DHCP server since your upgrade. If your ISP already knows about
it, presumably they already know about it.

Do you have control over the router? If it has firmware, you should try to
locate the latest version, and upgrade it. If the router is crippled by design
because your ISP has control over it, my recommendation would be to buy your
own router.

You could try setting your IP address manually. In System Preferences,
Network, you select your interface, then choose to configure IP manually; if
it's not on the main screen, press Advanced and it's there on the TCP/IP tab.
You've got to use an IP address and subnet mask compatible with your other
devices; pick an IP not likely to be used, like near the end of your range.
You could use Google DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) until you learn the addresses of
other servers of your ISP, if desired.

Reformatting A BootCam Win Partition To A Single OS Journal Drive

2014-09-29 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello List,

I have a BootCamp partition with Win 8.1 installed on. For reasons that I don't
want to get into here, I need to wipe out. On the Mac side, I have opened up
BootCamp assistant, but the third option to install or remove Win 7 or higher
is dimmed. When I enter on the continue button, I get an alert message stating
something like this that the drive can't be formatted to install Windows nor
can it be restored to a single partition in the OS journal disk. I tried to
Google the topic to get some instructions on how to solve this, but no success.
I would like some help on how to go about this. Hopefully, it won't involve a
full restore of the OS software. I am using a MacBook Air 2013, with Mountain
Lion.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

WARMEST regards,
Eileen

Re: Apple iOS 8 update cripples phones. How to fix it.

2014-09-29 Thread Jessica Moss
Ok, glad to know I'm not alone, I wonder if that's the case with the newer
models. I'm about to upgrade soon, which I'm looking forward to, so I can have
a phone that will run more smoothly. I unfortunately didn't realize IOS8 would
make my 4s so sluggish, or I probably would've held off.

Mine does that a lot, but could just be because I'm running an older model,

off, and I'm just moving around the screen thinking the phone froze up, and
then hear voiceover on, and it sometimes does this periodicly.

Re: knfbReader on iPhone 6 Plus.

2014-09-29 Thread Gabriele Battaglia

Hi Gigi.
I have an iPhone 6 Plus, localized in Italian.

KNFB Reader is almost unusable.

It takes from 3 up to 10 seconds to answer each flick or command. That's very
frustrating.

The issue has to do with something at a hardware level within the cameras
built-in on iPhone 6, 6 Plus and in some mini iPad.

Both Apple and NFB are aware of the problem and, a tecnichan of NFB told me
they are on it.

Hope this help.

Gabriel.

You could use Google DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) until you learn the addresses of
other servers of your ISP, if desired.

Go to Safari preferences with command Comma.

VO left until you hear new windows open with pop up button, down arrow until

Re: Macbook pro retina or not retina display?

2014-09-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

As mentioned by others here, the non-Retina Display model is an older
considerably slower machine. There certainly are ways of upgrading it to have
an SSD and to swap out the optical drive sliding over your HD into its place,
or just having an SSD. All this can improve the speed and possible storage
capacity of the unit but, in the process, you've increased the cost thus
reducing the savings. If I was purchasing a brand new machine, I'd simply go
with the Retina Display unit as it has a faster processor, faster memory and is
overall a better machine.

Besides being non retina, it's thicker and heavier than a retina model and
it's slower due to its older archetecture.
It is more easily upgraded if you choose. You can, and should, swap out that
spinning hard drive and install and SSD but this will raise the price. You
 can also upgrade memory.
Still, the Retina model is far superior in my opinion regardless of its

wondering whether the retina display has any bearing on the overall
performance or capabilities of a macbook pro for somebody who will not
actually benefit from the retina visual aspects. Please let me have your
very honest views on that. The non-retina macbook pro with no flash memory
but with 1TB serial ATA drive is significantly cheaper than a corresponding
retina display model. It would make a financial difference for me.

Look forward to your views. Please feel free to e-mail off line if deemed

 Hello all:
This is a question for the tech-savviest among you.
I was on the phone with an Apple rep yesterday, trying to fix an odd
problem on my 3.5-year-old 13-inch white MacBook. I was hoping to get at
least another year of use out of it, for financial reasons, but there is a
possibility I'll have to change that plan.
My MacBook is freezing for no reason three to five times an hour. I've run
Verify Disk and Permissions, and run Repair Permissions. VoiceOver will not
start in SAfe MOde, even with a sighted assistant attempting to start it
 manually.
 The Apple rep informed that:

 1. I barely have the system requirements for Mavericks, and definitely will
 not for Yosemite.

 2. If I get this problem fixed, I will have a perfectly reasonable system
to work with until I must get a new computer.

 So . . . I want to know:
How many of you with old MacBooks are running Mavericks with little to no
 trouble?
Second, has anyone heard or come across this statement about Yosemite, that
an old MacBook will not handle it?
Thoughts? Opinions? Sources for informed decision-making? Thanks.

Hi,

OK, that eliminates one possibilityy. Has this error crippled your iTunes so
that it's unusable? If so, you may wish to import your songs in smaller
increments. I'm wondering if it's having issues populating the iTunes
Database. Not sure why, but if that database has an issue part-way through the
import, it won't be able to resolve the problem and you more or less have to
re-import things again.

Re: Up half the night trying to change my IP address… Help!!!!

2014-09-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

What model of Mac are you running? If it has an ethernet port, try plugging it
directly into your router with an ethernet cable, then running any software
updates you can. I believe that there were some Airport WiFi updates since
Mavericks was released that could help with this.

If your only choice is WiFi, when you’re in the Network pane of System
Preferences, elect the WiFi from the Services Table, then navigate to the
Advanced button and press it. Select the TCP/IP tab and change the Connect
Using pop-up to “Using DHCP with Manual Address”. You should be able to put an
IP in there while leaving the Subnet etc fields alone. If that doesn’t work,
you need to look at the TCP and DNS info on one of your working machines, then
enter similar info into the totally Manual option within the is same Advanced
area. If those options are dimmed, make sure your lock is unlocked so that
changes are allowed.

HTH.

2014-09-29 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Just wanted to point out the both SMB and NFS are built into OSX so you
pretty much just have to set it up. SMB is little more than turning on a
checkbox is the sharing preferences while NFS is, well, NFS which is
just as easy/hard on OSX as on a linux box. Nice thing with SMB is that
will work for Windows users as well.

You could use NFS or SMB file systems to make the files on the Mac available
over the network to your Linux system. Then use NFS or Samba client on Linux
to access them.

Remember that this is under the graphical unity environment so i am really
not sure if any one knows. /A

If you're running Unity, this means your Linux distribution is based on
Ubuntu. You may receive better assistance by asking in an Ubuntu-related

Re: Easily Switching Inputs on the Fly

2014-09-29 Thread Alex Hall
My apologies, it was early when I replied. The process I gave is exactly the
same, but choose aggregate device instead. Then, that second table will show
input devices, not output ones, and you check the ones you want. The trick here
is that your device will have as many channels as the total of the devices; a
stereo mic plus a mono mic will have three channels altogether, for instance,
so you will need to ensure your software can handle multiple channels like that
and select the proper number i it can.

My apologies, it was early when I replied. The process I gave is exactly the
same, but choose aggregate device instead. Then, that second table will
show input devices, not output ones, and you check the ones you want. The
trick here is that your device will have as many channels as the total of the
devices; a stereo mic plus a mono mic will have three channels altogether,
for instance, so you will need to ensure your software can handle multiple
channels like that and select the proper number i it can.

First, you'll want to make a multi output device in the Audio Midi Setup
app. Launch the app, find and activate the Create New Device menu button,
choose multi-output device from the menu, and a new device will be placed
in the devices table near the top of the window. Select that device, then
find the unlabeled table further along. This table lists all the output
devices on the computer; check the box next to all the ones you want to use
and that should be it. You can now switch to that device (remember to set
VoiceOver however you need to so you'll still have speech, or leave a
 display connected).

As to quickly switching, I imagine there's a utility for that, possibly on
MacUpdate.com http://macupdate.com/. If not, AppleScript may be able to
do the job, though I've never looked into that possibility.

for a portable option often enough to justify buying one.
I'll be providing commentary via my Blue Yeti microphone. I then want to
switch to the house audio, which will be coming in via a line in to my
sound card. The Yeti and the sound card are two separate input choices
 under System Preferences.
I have a couple of questions about this set-up in a mac context.
First, I believe it is possible to combine separate inputs into one
virtual sound device? Since both the Yeti and the sound card have
adjustable inputs, I may be able to have them both going at once and
manage them via their respective input controls. Any advice on if this is
possible, and if so, how, is much appreciated.
Second, if this isn't possible, do utilities exist that allow you to
switch inputs via function keys or some other method more easy than
changing the input in System Preferences? I would love to be able to
switch from one input to another at the touch of a button.
Any help very much appreciated. Thanks a lot.

the iPhone language in Settings, General, Language Region. To make the
problem disappear from your iPhone, follow these steps:

 1. If you use just one software keyboard, temporarily add an arbitrary one in
Settings, General, Keyboard, Keyboards, Add New Keyboard.
 2. Open the Notes app.
 3. Create a new note.
 4. Press the left arrow key and the right arrow key simultaneously to turn

 5. Hold down the command key and press the space key several times to cycle
through the list of software keyboards.
 6. Press the left arrow key and the right arrow key simultaneously to turn on

Re: Macbook pro retina or not retina display?

2014-09-29 Thread Piotr Machacz
Unless you really want an optical drive, get the retina model. Swapping
out components can be done but if you do that you'll just end up making
it cost as much as a retina macbook, except with a processor from 2012.
The new retina macbooks have made some impressive improvements with
battery life and a solid state drive, while not as big, will give you a
lot more performance, but using less power and being a lot quieter. And
probably last longer. It's also quite a bit thinner and liter.

Besides being non retina, it's thicker and heavier than a retina model and it's

It is more easily upgraded if you choose. You can, and should, swap out that
spinning hard drive and install and SSD but this will raise the price. You can
also upgrade memory.
Still, the Retina model is far superior in my opinion regardless of its screen.

wondering whether the retina display has any bearing on the overall performance
or capabilities of a macbook pro for somebody who will not actually benefit
from the retina visual aspects. Please let me have your very honest views on
that. The non-retina macbook pro with no flash memory but with 1TB serial ATA

would make a financial difference for me.

Look forward to your views. Please feel free to e-mail off line if deemed

Hi,

I agree Sabahattin. The only time I've seen that sort of issue is when the
user doesn't have Admin privileges for changes to the Network pane of System
Prefs.

Now, if there's an issue with the DHCP service on the router, and the other
computers have not been shutdown, they may retain their TCP/IP credentials
whereas the MacBook with the new installation lost it's IP and cannot regain
it. many home routers only keep DHCP info for about an hour then release it
for someone else.

Re: Macbook pro retina or not retina display?

2014-09-29 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
While I concur with the recommendation to get the newer models for efficiency
reasons, I feel I should point out that the older MacBooks are still on sale
with optional SSDs, and that they come with both Ethernet and optical drives
which the newer models lack. This curmudgeon happens to think that you got
more for your money and that the MacBook Pro was worthy of its name back then,
but there's no denying progress at all; you get more Flash, more external
connectivity, more efficient processors, more battery power, and more memory
for less cost with the current machines. It's up to you which you prefer to go
with, and I wouldn't fault you for staying in the past, but you've got to be
mindful of your investment. I need to assure you, as someone who tracks the
market pretty closely, that there are times when function trumps form, and for
most purposes the low-end current MBPs will serve well.

could not connect to the Internet. I tried using Diagnostics and the
Assistant, the latter after having deleted the service and inputting
information manually. No matter what I did, however, I kept getting a
self-assigned IP address.
I called my ISP and they told me to call Apple.
After work, I did so:

1. Because this was an update, the MacBook was using my key-chain to try to
connect, but because the router often changes, the upgraded computer was using
old info, and I needed to clear everything out . . . every network I ever
joined, and start fresh.

2. After selecting and deleting all services and profiles, I added my WiFi
network after finding it in the table of offered networks, putting in the
password, and joining.
It is now working fine.

However, my 13-inch mid-2010 MacBook has only 2GB of memory, and can only be
upgraded to 4. It is running horribly slowly, from applications loading to
response time when typing. There also continue to be some mini-freezes.

The Apple rep told me when I upgrade the memory I will achieve a substantial
difference.
I have a Genus Bar appointment scheduled for tomorrow, at which I originally
believed I would be faced with the decision to replace the battery or get a new
computer. Now I am thinking of getting the memory upgrade and trying that on
for a while.

However, and here comes the question:
According to my MacBook specs, I've got 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3. In the Apple
store, the only and only 4 GB memory module listed says 4 GB 1866 MHz DDR3.
Is this doable? If not, what can I do?
Thanks to all for the suggestions and support.
Christine

Re: Changing email address

2014-09-29 Thread Angus MacKinnon
Chris

I am confused as well. I went to the main Google Groups site to change the Send
To email address since I have a number of Google Groups and I can not find the
Send To address field. On Saturday September 27, 2014 and did something to have
nearly 3900 emails I have not seen before download to my InBox and Archive
Mailboxes. I would just like to find the Send To address field in Google Groups
first. Can you help me Find the Send To address field?

Shortcut keys for Amadeus Pro

2014-09-29 Thread Agent086b
Hi all,
does anybody know where I can find a list of shortcut keys for Amadeus Pro? I
am really struggling to convert a vinyl record to digital. I have listened to a
couple of podcasts but I am unable to make the program work as the podcasters
do. When I drop markers they don't appear to go where I want them. I do know
about CMD Y to bring the ply heads together.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Up half the night trying to change my IP address… Help!!!!

2014-09-29 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries

Glad to hear the network problem is solved.

Usually running fast RAM slowly is better than trying to make slow RAM
go fast (overclocking). If you are getting the RAM at the store and
having the Genius folks install it then you should be in good hands
although you'll probably be paying a premium price. A 4GB PC3-8500
1066Mhz 1.5v memory module is about $40-$60 US from newegg.
