GTK and Voiceover

2015-03-11 Thread Brandon A. Olivares
I’m trying to run an application that uses Python’s PyGTK. It’s a pain to get
PyGTK installed, so before I try, I wanted to know if anyone knew whether this
would work with Voiceover. I’m guessing it’s not since it’s probably not using
native controls, but just wanted to check.

Peace,
Brandon

Re: Voiceover not speaking

2015-03-11 Thread Eugenia Firth
VoiceOver not speaking only happened to me once, but when it did, nothing
worked except going to Music and having my husband fix it. I’m glad it worked
easier for you. I do know someone who had this happen to him more. That’s how
my husband knew what to do to fix it. As I said, this has never happened to me
yet in IOS 8.

many times I tried to enter my Apple ID password, I could not sign in. Many
others around the world are having the same issues. My belief, for what it's
worth, is that Apple may have been hacked and thus the outage.

Re: [Bulk] more on VarioUltra

2015-03-11 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, Donna. Thanks for the update about VarioUltra. I read the discussion about
this yesterday. I'd love to get my hands on one to see what it looks like. Wish
I went to CSUN last week, but I was too busy. I emailed David Bradburn back in
November to order the VarioUltra 40. Unfortunately, I don't think I can afford
to purchase it myself, but hopefully I'll get a case opened again with
department of rehab in California by the end of this month. It would be awesome
if my counselor can purchase this for me.
How did you like using VarioUltra at the conference?
Katie

Are you in standard layout? In the new layout, there is a pop-up box in the

 Hello Christina,

It sounds as though you have the preview pane visible. This means that
when you navigate to a message, it opens automatically, so you never see
an unread message. This is why I always disable the preview pane.

If you read your messages by doing VO-j to get to the body, you have the
 preview pane visible.

Hi,

By now, I'm sure you all have noticed issues connecting to verious Apple
services. I went to reset my Apple TV box only to discover that no matter how
many times I tried to enter my Apple ID password, I could not sign in. Many
others around the world are having the same issues. My belief, for what it's
worth, is that Apple may have been hacked and thus the outage.

more on VarioUltra

2015-03-11 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Just passing along my latest communication from Baum, this time from David
Bradburn of Baum USA. He says that the back order issue should be resolved by
the end of this month. He also writes the following regarding the hardware
issues that Mika asked about yesterday:

" 3. As for the USB port and NaviStick cap issues you reference, both
issues have been addressed.
a. In the case of the3 USB port, the connection has been redesigned to be
stronger. All new VarioUltra units in production feature this new design and we
have a stock of replacement USB boards to use in the event any customers with
older units ever have an issue.
b. The NaviStick cap can come off in certain situations, though I am only
aware of 3 people who have been affected by it. The cap connection point was
previously square in shape while the connection on the VarioUltra that it
attached to was circular in shape. The cap connector has now been redesigned to
be circular as well, resulting in a tighter, more secure fit."

I hope this is helpful.
Cheers,
Donna

Hi,

I wasn't physically at the location to try the 3 finger jester, will be
there on Saturday.
We used Siri to toggle VoiceOver.

Apple out and not responding

2015-03-11 Thread Ray Foret Jr

Sincerely,
The Constantly Barefooted Ray

Still a happy Mac, Verizon Wireless iPhone 6+ and Apple TV user!

Re: Disabling the Document Pane in Office Word 2016 Preview?

2015-03-11 Thread Piotr Machacz
I just had a brief play with the various office apps and I think the
problems aren't very big and can still be fixed. Before people cut my
head off, you need to keep in mind that this is still an early preview
which will continue to get updated and it looks to me like Microsoft is
still working on it. Stepping away from Word for a moment, Outlook seems
to work quite well, Excel, although not tracking where the focus is with
the arrow keys does at least expose the cells to VO, while powerpoint
seems to work quite well already - you can see the various slide
rectangles, edit them, and VoiceOver gives you warnings when they are
hidden. Viewing existing slides is also accessible and the feedback you
get is a lot better and faster than with keynote, which just seems to
say something in the lines of, 2 items were updated as slides change.
One note is also working which bodes well for Word.
Back to Word, VoiceOver already knows that the document pane is a text
area, so all that's left for Microsoft is to expose the text and send
various notifications when the text is updated or when the cursor moves,
a task made considerably simpler with Yosemite. The other reason I'm not
worrying just yet is that for the few months I've been with the Windows
10 tech preview, it also has accessibility issues that get progressively
addressed. For example, when the notification center was introduced,
there was at first no way to get to it at all from the keyboard. A build
later, that was addressed, but the interface was very cluttered, and
with yet another build that, too was fixed. The start menu was just
rewritten and is currently not very accessible, but Microsoft is aware
of this and it will most likely be addressed. And let's not forget the
office web apps, or the iOS office apps. iWork didn't work as well as
it does now from the get go either, the first versions of pages 13
didn't indicate links, the export dialogs weren't very accessible and
keynote's presentation view was completely broken for a few builds,
those were all fixed later.
So yeah, I think by the time office 16 leaves preview it will work quite
well

Hello,

I took a look at this again. I interacted with the Document pane, but there is
no access to the edit text that has been process. VO did not echo character,
word, or both and there I couldn’t get any navigation with VO to work. I knew
that there was words processed because when I tabbed to the word count it
stated 15 words. The unlabeled button to the right of that activates the spell
checker. I have sent MS feedback about the issues regarding VO accessing the
document pane edit field. If others are finding the same, it takes a village to
get someone to look at the problem and maybe have a chance that it will be
fixed. JMO.

Hi,

Maybe I’m misunderstanding things here, but, if you disable the Document pane,
then you are removing the container where the text is being held. Would that
not, therefore, make the text disappear, or, at least, inaccessible? If one
does an Item Chooser, then types some text that you know is in the body of the
document, if it appears to the Item Chooser, we’re getting somewhere, if not,
then the accessibility of the editable area is non-existent.

Hi Eileen
Although I realize that you had use word for a long time, I suggest that you
consider gradually learning pages. The 2013 version is a lot better for voice
over. How long it would take you would depend on how complicated your work is,
of course. It did not take me very long to learn pages at all.

Hi,

The way I see it from trying to get Office 2016 to work is the integration of
the voiceover screen reader into the software so there's full speech feedback
and navigation within the software. When I used it yesterday, I did get a word
count indicating that my word processing was there, but the accessibility
wasn't. So, if this is the case, to me Dream Writer wouldn't fix the problem.

Hi Chris,

I would love to use Pages, but I am a recent Mac user of 1-1/2 years and I
need Word for my business. Not that I’m opposed to learning a new word
processor, but when one has used a piece of software for many years, I am
more productive and less time is wasted in attempting to figure out some
formatting or use of styles that are not apparent to a new user. I was
trying not to have to install Win 8.1 into BootCamp, but I guess I will have
to bite the bullet. I still wrote to Microsoft. This is a beta, so maybe
they will get it right this time.

Hello,

I took a look at this again. I interacted with the Document pane, but
there is no access to the edit text that has been process. VO did not echo
character, word, or both and there I couldn’t get any navigation with VO
to work. I knew that there was words processed because when I tabbed to
the word count it stated 15 words. The unlabeled button to the right of
that activates the spell checker. I have sent MS feedback about the issues
regarding VO accessing the document pane edit field. If others are finding
the same, it takes a village to get someone to look at the problem and
maybe have a chance that it will be fixed. JMO.

Hi,

Maybe I’m misunderstanding things here, but, if you disable the Document
pane, then you are removing the container where the text is being held.
Would that not, therefore, make the text disappear, or, at least,
inaccessible? If one does an Item Chooser, then types some text that you
know is in the body of the document, if it appears to the Item Chooser,
we’re getting somewhere, if not, then the accessibility of the editable
area is non-existent.

I guess this is what you are implying, but I know that on the iPhone a
specific gesture can mute speech despite the presence of VoiceOver. I would

Besides the buttons is there a way to turn up VoiceOver speech?

Re: Disabling the Document Pane in Office Word 2016 Preview?

2015-03-11 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Too bad Open/Libre office doesn’t work either otherwise we could have edited
word documents directly there instead of having to export to word format like
you have to do in Pages. That in my not so humble opinion is just as big a deal
breaker for Pages as the fact that in Open/Libre office, every single new line
is treated as a new edit box making it impossible to read or select big chunks
of text.

Hello List,

I have installed the beta Microsoft Office 2016 on my MacBook Air
2013. It would be nice to be able to disable the “Document” Pane.
I believe that the edit field is under it and the pane is blocking
it from voiceover. Hence, this makes Word not accessible to us. I
was attempting to send Microsoft some feedback, but when I clicked
on the feedback tab in Word preferences, there was no method to do
this. Has anyone figured out the magic steps to get rid of the
“Document” pane yet? And, does anyone have the contact to send
constructive criticism to Microsoft?

thanks in advance.

Warmest regards,
Eileen
