RE: Macbook Air suddenly slow to boot up

2015-05-09 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Ed,

I suggest that you reset the system PRAM.

To reset the PRAM, power on the Mac while pressing Option+Command+R+P until the
startup chime is heard, twice.

It may be necessary to perform this several times until you are successful. It
can be tricky.

Good luck,

Mark

Subject: Macbook Air suddenly slow to boot up

Hi,

My 2012 Macbook Air has suddenly become slow to boot up.

I am running Yosemite and have the hard drive encrypted. I used to be able to
enter the password a couple of seconds after the startup sound, but since last
week, I have had to wait around half a minute before the password box appears.

I’m not aware of having installed anything in particular over the past seven
days. Does anyone have any ideas about why the machine may have suddenly
become slow to boot and what I might try? The machine does not seem to be any
slower during actual operation.

Cheers,

Ed

The Stanford course Programming Abstractions in C++ is allso on iTunes U.

The first lecture is on youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMzH3tfP6f8.

There is a draft book available, "Programming Abstractions in C++" by Eric S
Roberts. It's for the CS106b course at Stanford University, and I would
recommend it after you've learned the basics of programming. The "Design
Patterns" book is very good, although I am yet to read it in depth, so this
recommendation isn't based on a detailed reading.

Another great book that anyone serious about programming should read at some
point is Abelson, Sussman and Sussman, Structure and Interpretation of
Computer Programs, 2nd ed., also available online in TeXInfo format, which is
quite accessible if you read the source file. Video lectures by the authors
are also available.

Re: Swift Courses on iTunes U

2015-05-09 Thread Barry Hadder
The important thing to keep in mind is that this is just a resource. You are
not enrolling in the course and you are not under the same time constraints nor
does this have any effect on your GPA.
No one has mastered anything at this level. From the little I heard of the
first lecture, it’s sounds to me like a class for absolute beginners. The main
problem I heard is that he seemed to me to spend too much time on explaining
the IDE then was necessary.
There are things on OOP all over the web that will git you up to speed. The
Switf book in the iBooks store will do that as well.

Cheers,

Re: SIRI not using enhanced quality voice on my new iPhone6

2015-05-09 Thread Phil Halton
I had taken those steps of connecting to power and Wi-Fi, and still Siri was
stubbornly sticking with the compact voice. That is why I contacted Apple
Accessibility and started the case ticket. I managed to force Siri to upgrade
to the enhance quality by doing the following:
One, I switched from Englishto another language temporarily. And then back
again to English.
Two I then did the connect the power and Wi-Fi trick and that forced Siri to
download the enhanced English quality voice. For some reason it seems to of
been stuck and changing languages and then back again forced the download.
For the other Lister who was asking about advanced settings for Siri, it should
be noted that there are no settings per se. Just the act of connecting to power
and Wi-Fi Siri will then bring down the enhanced quality voice for the selected
language.

Re: SIRI not using enhanced quality voice on my new iPhone6

2015-05-09 Thread Alan Lemly
Okay. Sometimes folks use Siri and VoiceOver interchangeably and I guess I
misunderstood the original post. I wasn't aware that Siri had different quality
settings or even that you had to download it in order to use it. I know Siri or
some part of it resides on Apple servers so you must have Internet access to
use it but I've never seen any quality settings for it.

Where is the setting for the quality?

2015-05-09 Thread Dionipher Presas Herrera
Good morning, to all, i would like to ask how to add an invite to skype.
because the only way i could accept them is to close the window, then accept
them. is this the usual thing to accept an invite?

Re: Skype very important, please help

2015-05-09 Thread Shaf
You should absolutely use your mac. Make sure there's enough lighting
for your face to focus in the camera. Good luck with your interview! :)

Hello,
I have to do a job interview on Skype. Can anyone tell me where it is the most
accessible way to do it? Should I use my Mac, or my iPad? Any tips or
instructions would also be helpful.
Thanks

Re: Skype very important, please help

2015-05-09 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Weird! I've never seen that happen, and believe you me, I use the camera when
on Skype as often as I possibly can, unless I'm not presentable, which is rare.

Chris.

  Hi,
if you use the MAC I would make a test call for at least a little more than
five minutes though. I have seen skype lose the picture after a couple of
minutes in conjunction with the screen saver a couple of times, both on my MBA
and on my MAC desktop.
In other words, if stability is the main issue I would settle for the iPad.
