Re: Text boxes in Pages?

2015-07-26 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Alex,

I think you’d find placeholder text a better way for entering text that
changes. Just type in some typical text in the format you want, then select
that text, press VO-Tab for VO to ignore next key press, then press
Ctrl-Option-Cmd-t to make it placeholder text. When using your template, the
placeholder text will be highlighted when you navigate to it using just the
arrow keys, and typing will replace it but keep the formatting.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Text boxes in Pages?

2015-07-26 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Eileen,

Pages is a very different word processor from Word. You can achieve the same
results but the approach is completely different. I’m very comfortable with
Pages, but find Word 2016 very confusing. When asking how to achieve something
in Pages, it’s better to describe the desired outcome rather than asking if
there’s an equivalent to some mode or other in Word.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Devin.

I have never got it to work with pages. FInereader can easily save as an epub,
and most of the chapters is marked up correctly, but it would be great if there
is a program that I can edit the epub file finereader creates.

Re: A Good Youtube to Mp4 Converter for Mac

2015-07-26 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Shawn,

When I realised that MacTube no longer worked, I did some search and found an
application called
WinX HD Video Converter for Mac.app
I can't now remember but I think I had to buy it. You can try it for a while.
It works pretty well once you learn the layout of its window. There are some
unlabelled buttons but you could label them in Voiceover with vo+/. This is
not ideal, I know, but the app works well. You first have to find on YouTube
the video you want, then copy its link through the contextual menu, and paste
it into the app to initiate the download. The downloaded files are placed in
the home folder/music/the apps folder. You can do other things with the app
but I did not feel confident yet to try the other features. Have a look at it
and good luck.

Thanks, this is exactly what I was after. The problem is that it only worked

Hey there,

An app I use, which is fre is: MacX YouTube Downloader,.
It works most of the time when I want to download Youtube video. The
completed file is placed into your downloads folder.
All you do is copy-n-paste the URL of a Youtube linked video, and you
should be good-to-go.

Hope this has been helpful

Re: Text boxes in Pages?

2015-07-26 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Alex,

You have to press the VO-Tab command before each time you use the
Ctrl-Option-Cmd-t Make placeholder text command but it should work every time.
I’ve been using this for years, and in Pages09 I created a different shortcut
for Make placeholder text to avoid having to use the VO-Tab command.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Text boxes in Pages?

2015-07-26 Thread Alex Hall
I was. Oddly, switching out of, then back to, Pages seemed to get it working.
One final question on placeholder text: when I read the line holding the text,
I hear only the placeholder. For example:

Client name: [client name placeholder]

If I read that line, I hear the embedded object sound, "client name
placeholder", then the end embedded object sound. The rest of the line doesn't
read at all. Is this expected behavior?

Re: slightly OT: posting Youtube comments using Safari and VO on Mac?

2015-07-26 Thread Kevin Shaw
Hi Alex,

I’ve noticed that the comments and comment field are not visible right away. I
have a feeling that there is some scripting behind this hides the comments to
visually reduce clutter on the page until you want to interact with the
comments.

Try the following:

Find the heading for the video title. If you navigate by links or headings from
this point, you’ll miss the comment field. VO-right until you’re past the name
of the contributor and wait a second or two. This should allow the script to
work revealing the comment field and the always enlightening Youtube comments.
Keep VO-right arrowing until you see the link with your name. The next element
will be a clickable element that says “Share your Thoughts”. VO-space. The edit
field will then show up. I had to VO-space again on the edit field and then
type something for the Post Comment button to appear along with the checkbox to
also post to GooglePlus.

Re: Text boxes in Pages?

2015-07-26 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Alex,

I’m not sure how you’re reading the text. If you just use the arrow keys,
placeholder text will be highlighted as you reach it and will be read. When you
do the next right arrow, the placeholder text will be unhighlighted and any
normal text will be read normally.
Never use Quick Nav in Pages! It simply isn’t worth the trouble.
Other thoughts: have you got your mouse cursor set to ignore the other cursors?
It works better that way.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Text boxes in Pages?

2015-07-26 Thread eileen . misrahi
Hi Ann,

Before I think about diving into Pages myself, I was wondering if this is
possible with Pages after all the placemarkers are set? Is there a way to place
the document in protective mode and then use the tab key to jump from one place
marker to another or will the keystroke VO-J accomplish this action? This would
speed up the process in filling out the document before submitting all
documents to an agency for billing purposes. Please forgive me for relating the
content to Word, but I'm a converter from the PC world and although I have
joined the Mac world for the most part, I still go back to the PC side to
expedite a task that I can complete in an efficient manner. One of these days
I'll totally make the switch and take the plunge. I value your knowledge base
in using the iWorks suite. Thanks for listening and I'll save this thread for
future use.

Kind regards,
Eileen

Re: siri's sense of humor, and ability to..?

2015-07-26 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Siri is more like a Star Trek kind of computer thing whereby you can ask
him/her directions, questions both real and silly, place commands like "open my
Music app" etc. VoiceOver is audio announcements and modified gestures of
visible items on the screen so that a visually impaired user can hopefully use
the device in a similar fashion as a sighted user. They are actually
independent of each other although they use some common aspects of the iOS.

AR There is no such thing as protective mode in Pages and no, VO-j will not
accomplish this, it will just take you to the Formatter. I haven’t found a way
to jump to the next placeholder text. I don’t know whether this is scriptable,

Independent in that they are not needed to work the other. That is, not
dependent on each other for anything. You can ask Siri to do things for you
but not everything. For example, you could ask Siri to play a song in the
Music app, but I don't believe that you could tell him/her to adjust the EQ
settings for that song. I don't believe that she/he is so granular yet.

2015-07-26 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi list:

Not sure anyone can help me with this, as it’s kind of an unusual request, but
here goes.

My girlfriend has a MacBook Air, 13 inch from last year. She’s comfortable
doing most things on her mac, but is going off to grad school this year. Her
school’s disabilities services department is familiar with JAWS and windows,
but has no familiarity with Voiceover and OSX. One of the primary programs they
use for her grad work they tell her works brilliantly under windows with JAWS,
but no clue about Mac accessibility. They’re trying to get her a copy to test,
but just in case.

The only virtual machine I have available is an XP machine that works great for
mudding and Quenton C’s playroom, but web browsing is painful on it (I never do
it so never bothered to even see if it was really doable). She would like a
Windows 7 machine. I suppose I could go around and try to build her one, but if
someone happens to have one already created and would be willing to share, that
would be ideal.

If you like, you may write me off list about this at johnl1...@gmail.com, so we
dont’ clutter the list with traffic that isn’t really related to the primary
purpose of this list.

Thanks in advance!

DFTBA!

Hi!
You can actually design your mac when ordering it from apple store.
So you can have a similar processor or higher on the air too if you want but
it will cost you more too.
I don’t know how about the newer mac mini but from what i’ve learned you get
less speed from the newer mac mini than the older once.

Editing/Working with Pages Template

2015-07-26 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
My next Pages question of the day: templates. I made a basic one, and saved it
so I could hang onto it and keep using it for experiments. However, when I open
it, I don't see the template text at all, just an option to add it to my
templates list. I want to modify the template, not make a document based on it.
How would I do this?

Related: is there a way, without adding this to my templates list, to make a
blank document based on this template?

Re: Pros and cons of a Mac mini

2015-07-26 Thread Kliph
I have both the 2012 and 2014 model, and the 2012 model is not faster than the
2014 model. They just replaced the cores with doul cores, instead of quad
cores, but it is much faster plus I use SSD hard drives on both, so that have
something to do with the speed.

Hi all,
My next Pages question of the day: templates.

Doing a Keynote presentation

2015-07-26 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello All,

I will be doing a keynote presentation later this year. I hopefully will be
able to take my Apple TV to hook up to their screen and I should be able to
take it from there. Looking at keynote, I can start the presentation but is it
easy to go back etc. I wondered if anyone who has done this and what tips they
could offer about keynote or Apple TV configuration? I want to spend time on
the technology now so that my focus can be on the content rather than playing
with gadgets.

Thanks.

Gena

Pages lets you see the template to your templates list, or as a stand-alone
file. I've done the latter, but how do I now go back in and modify how the

Re: Editing/Working with Pages Template

2015-07-26 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Alex,

You have to add the template to your templates list to be able to open it and
modify it. You can use an existing template as the basis for a new template and
you can turn placeholder text back into normal text using the same command that
made it placeholder text in the first place.
To delete a template from your templates in the chooser, navigate to the one to
be deleted, bring the mouse and get a contextual menu with Ctrl-Click using the
mouse or trackpad to click. VO-Shift-m doesn’t work.

You did the sensible thing by saving your template in the Finder first, as once
it’s in the template chooser, you can no longer find it to share it with anyone.

Cheers,

Anne

 Hello list,
Like some of you, I'm now testing 10.11. I'll not be discussing it, due to
the NDA, but I want to test as much as I can. Please let me know what bugs
you're experiencing so I can confirm them; if they're fixed, great, but
if not, I want to tell Apple as soon as I can. I know about the bug list
AppleVis keeps, but there's no guarantee we have every bug on there. Note
that I can't test foreign language or braille display bugs, and remember
that I won't be reporting back on the status of anything you send. Thanks!

Hi,
Can someone tell me if there is a way to make text edit my default word

I don’t care for Pages at all.

Facebook sounds.

2015-07-26 Thread sadam . lists
Hi all,

As of a few updates I'm not receiving sounds related to Facebook events.

These came through fine before updating.

Have adjusted sound settings in the app but has made no difference.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

You use the feedback assistant for all bugs concerning the beta. I’m sure the
accessibility team will tell you to do the same thing if you report an issue to
them.

Re: default word processor

2015-07-26 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Stacey,

You have to do this for each type of file you want to edit with TextEdit. So,
normally, RTF will open with TextEdit but DOC and DOCX will have to be changed.

Select a file of the type you wish to change and press Cmd-i to open the
Information window.
Interact with the scroll area.
Press VO-i for the Item Chooser and type the letters “op” to find Open with.
If the disclosure triangle is collapsed, press VO-Space to expand it.
Navigate right once and press VO-Space on the menu button.
Type the letters “te” for TexteEdit then press Return.
Navigate right to Use this application to open all documents like this one and
continue right to the button.
If the button is dimmed, you’ll need to go to the end of the window to unlock
the padlock which requires you to type in your admin password.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Doing a Keynote presentation

2015-07-26 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Once the presentation is going, you can use right arrow to move forward and
left arrow to move bac. You can also use either spacebar or return to advance
through slides. The Apple Remote also works in Keynote to be able to advance
and go back. Test them out and see how it works for you.

Re: Voiceover is lost for words

2015-07-26 Thread Andrew Lamanche
I've never had much trouble with the Feedback utility on El Capitan beta apart
from the fact that it seems to suggest every time that I should attach a file
when actually files have already been selected and attached by default.
There's a scroll area with which one has to interact but that's pretty easy
once you've interacted with it. If you are talking about El Capitan, you need
to use the Feedback application to report bugs.

iPhone behaving strangely

2015-07-26 Thread Eric Oyen
hello everyone,

I updated to iOS 8.4 about 2 months ago. everything was working fine until the
last 2 weeks. Now, I am starting to see some strange behavior.
Firstly, the phone seems laggy when starting applications (voiceover stops
speaking for up to a minute),
some apps (like Facebook) have their primary screen disappear (giving me bonks
while trying to interact with it),
the Onscreen keyboard doesn't appear in either messenger or Facebook (thus not
allowing me to use the dictate function),
some of the apps in the app chooser won't return to foreground when selected
and double tapped,
storage on the device seems to be incorrect (reports 7gb used with 5 gb
remaining and this is on a 16gb phone!).

I haven't tried a reset on the phone yet (I am loathe to try this as I would
have to put back in a lot of data such as passwords, etc.

anyone have any suggestions on how I can solve this?

Re: iPhone behaving strangely

2015-07-26 Thread E.T.
In the app switcher, close ALL apps and see if that helps. Sounds
like too many are left open and hogging the resources.

A reset will not wipe the data. Pressing both home and power button
until the phone reboots will not harm data. But try using the app
switcher first.

Re: Pros and cons of a Mac mini

2015-07-26 Thread percygarrett
Yes Marie. I use a Mac mini augmented with Dell periphials. Although my Mac
mini doesn't require a monitor, I use aDell monitor and keyboard. I use an
external CD drive and an Epson printer.

I have been using Dell computers for years and have my keyboard and monitor.
Does anyone know if you can use them with the Mac mini? I am thinking about
abandoning Windows for some type of mac.

an iPhone, they will need a trackpad as well. VO on the Mac can be confusing,
even if you know VO from the iPhone or other devices. If your friend wants to
learn a Mac, then they are better off with an Air. Everything is included. But,
honestly, your friend should just stick with Windows if they aren’t comfortable
with big change. Windows 8/10 is a smaller change than moving to a mac would

  Hi everyone,

I have a friend who is considering purchasing a Mac mini. The basic
reason for wanting the Mac Mini is cost. He also does not want to take the time
to learn windows eight or windows 10. He's been stuck on Windows XP since long
before support stopped last year. His only dealings with voiceover is with iOS
devices along with his AppleTV. He is not one who does well with major change
in electronics in his life. I don't want to turn this into an Apple versus
Windows discussion other than to say I suggested he look for a Windows 7
machine because it was something that he is familiar with. My question for the
group is this; other than the base cost, as I understand it of $699 for the Mac
Mini, what are the auxiliary purchases needed in order to make it functional?
If I'm correct, that does not include a screen, does it include a keyboard or
speakers?

I also know firsthand what it's like attempting to learn a new operating
system and screen reader on your own. I had the patients. He does not. Thank
God for this group. I would've been lost. I'm attempting to get him to join it
before he makes his purchase. Any suggestions or help you could offer would be
greatly appreciated.

  Many many thanks,

  Pam Francis

Re: Editing/Working with Pages Template

2015-07-26 Thread Alex Hall
Thanks, I'm now able to make a new document based on my template. How do I go
in and modify the template itself, though, so that documents I make in future
using it will look different? It's a test, as I said, so I'll want to do more
than just the three lines I have now. Do I have to just keep making new
documents, modifying, and saving each revision as a template, then deleting the
previous one? It seems like there should be a way to edit the master template.
