There are several programs in usr bin that end in stat that are better for
scripting and screen readers not sure what understands the current system. I
used to use vmstat and memstat quite a bit. I would check but my computer

Re: Touch ID and purchasing things in the Apple online stores

2015-09-29 Thread Pablo Sandoval
As far as the App Store goes I know the first time you purchase something after
a restart of the phone you are prompted for your password. Once you have input
the password one time, you will then be prompted to use the touch-ID for
further purchases.
Note that if you make a 2nd purchase within a short amount of time you will not
be prompted for either.
I hope this helps, and is somewhat clear.

RE: Overdrive.

2015-09-29 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Kawal,

I am currently using the Over Drive app to read the Davincci Code in audio book
format.

The app is definitely VoiceOver accessible. However, it relies mostly on the
explore-by-touch method as the swipe gesture yields little results in the app.
Virtually every feature of the app is, however, VoiceOver accessible.

Like me, several members of the V iPhone mailing list are very pleased with the
functionality of the app. It does take some getting used to but, with a little
practice and a lot of patience, audio books can be successfully downloaded and
read comfortably with an excellent bookmarking feature and sleep timer
available. The playback interface is absolutely outstanding.

Finally, I suggest that you begin your exploration of OverDrive by first
setting up a user account at http://overdrive.com

Good Luck,

Mark

Hello.

Please could someone tell me if they are using Overdrive? I was going to use
it on my I phone because of the RNIB Talking book service but when I downloaded
the app, I found it virtually unusable. Just wondering then if anyone else is
using it. I know when I tried the Mac Software, that was also not to my liking.

Thanks.

Kawal.

FS: quad core mac book pro based thunderbolt recording rig with pro tools etc.

2015-09-29 Thread Cameron Strife
Hi everybody.

I'd like to sell this as a package if possible, but I'll entertain
offers for a specific item or items. This is a great setup for pro
tools, logic, and reaper on OSX, or sonar etc on the windows side.
Please note that as of this writing, the windows drivers for the
resident audio thunderbolt interface do not work via bootcamp for
windows seven sixty four bit. They rock on OSX though! (Guitarists,
you'll want to check out the last item in this list by the way...)

fifteen inch Apple mac book pro with 1tb hard drive, I7 quad core
processor at 2.5gHz per core, sixteen gb of ddr3 ram, thunderbolt etc.
I'll do a fresh install of the latest version of OSX before shipping.

3tb Seagate external USB 3.0 hard drive

resident audio t2 24 bit bus powered thunderbolt audio/midi interface
with two mic/line inputs, phantom power, two headphone outs, stereo
main outs, midi ports, durable construction and rock solid drivers!

five meter thunderbolt cable

Olympus LS100 24 bit pcm linear field recorder with talking feedback,
stereo internal microphones, mini microphone jack, two nutrik
xlr/quarter inch inputs, phantom power, limiter, metranome, mono,
stereo, and multi track recording, four gb of internal storage and up
to sixty four gigs of additional storage via the sd card slot, tactile
friendly controls etc. Includes battery, charger, USB cable, shoulder
strap, carrying case, documentation, and original box. The firmware
and speech output are all up to date.

SE Electronics 2200ac large diaphragm condenser microphone with custom
shock mount, pop filter, original box, and documentation etc.

tripod microphone boom stand and a high quality xlr to xlr cable

pro tools 11 license, waves musicians plug in bundle license, waves
audio track plug in license, and iLok 2. (Or, I could transfer just
the pro tools license to your iLok 2 if you already have one.)

USA Peavey Composite Acoustics GXI all carbon fiber grand auditorium
acoustic/electric guitar. Features include professional setup,
upgraded bone nut and saddle, one piece all carbon fiber body and
neck, offset sound hole, polimer fretboard with stainless steel frets,
aluminum dot markers, high gloss UV protective finish, and an active
Fishman Aura pickup system which was the top of the line pickup choice
on an already top of the line instrument! This guitar is never
effected by temperature or humidity, and is very durable! It will
never bow, warp, or crack due to the environment. This is the only
guitar I've ever recorded direct that blew me away. It is really that
good! Deluxe hard case and accessories included. Serious offers only
please as I'd rather keep her. There is no perfect guitar but this is
pretty freaking close!

Shoot me an e mail off list if interested...

Thanks,

Re: The Latest Update to Office 16 for Mac

I have only just started using Word on my Mac by utilising my 365 subscription.

As far as I am aware I have the latest update but when I go to the About Word

However my version does seem largely assessable.
In my version I am not seeing the behaviour you describe. I can option both
left and right arrow and hear Voiceover announce words just fine. I can also
get the same result by using VO right and left arrow. This may be a workaround
for your problem.

OS X El Capitan Available as Free Update Tomorrow

2015-09-29 Thread Apple Hot News
OS X El Capitan Available as Free Update Tomorrow

OS X El Capitan, the latest major release of the world’s most advanced desktop
operating system, will be available Wednesday, September 30, as a free update
for Mac users. El Capitan builds on the groundbreaking features and beautiful
design of OS X Yosemite. “People love using their Macs, and one of the biggest
reasons is the power and ease of use of OS X,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s
senior vice president of Software Engineering. “El Capitan refines the Mac
experience and improves performance in a lot of little ways that make a very
big difference. Feedback from our OS X beta program has been incredibly
positive and we think customers are going to love their Macs even more with El
Capitan.”

Re: Overdrive.

2015-09-29 Thread David Griffith
I find it usable for downloading books on the Mac.
I only use it for downloading books though. I then just copy the folder of
downloading books onto an SD card for use on my Pocket Plextalk for actually
reading the books.

I have not gone near the iOS version of Overdrive as there have been others who
have criticised it. If you wanted to hear the books on your iOS device I should
suggest simply using Voice Dream Reader to do this as this apparently works
well with mp3 audio books. I do not do this as I still use my Plextalk but this
is a suggestion. You may have to zip the files to be read in Voice Dream but I
have not investigated this.

The Latest Update to Office 16 for Mac

2015-09-29 Thread 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries
Hello, I am wondering if anyone has had any luck with Option Right Arrow
reading word by word in a document?
Option left arrow seems to read prior word just fine, but I cannot get the
option right arrow to read.
However, option shift right arrow does read highlighted text.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Overdrive.

2015-09-29 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu

Thanks.

Kawal.

A Quick Tip for Low Vision Users of iTunes 12.3 or Later

2015-09-29 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I cannot remember if this subject has already been discussed, on list, but
just in case it has not:

Perhaps the following tip may benefit those using screen readers, also, but
I discovered it because, as a screen magnifier user (in addition to my
screen reader and my beloved Braille display) I really dislike the new
Playlist view in iTunes 12.3 in which (1) the Playlist background color is
based on the album artwork and (2) each listing of a title in a Playlist is
preceded by the song's artwork in the left-most column. Also, in the
default Playlist view, one cannot modify column headings, etc, as one could
do in iTunes 11 and earlier.

Please note that the following is written with screen magnifier users in
mind, only.

1.
To disable the custom color feature, from the Edit menu, select Preferences.
Next, simply uncheck the "Use Custom Colors" checkbox. The actual checkbox
has a slightly longer label but it will be clear when you see it.

2.
In order to have your Playlists appear as they did in iTunes 11 and earlier
(removing the artwork from the left-most column and enabling column browser
customization:

A.
Select a Playlist in the left pane of iTunes.

B.
Near the upper-right corner of the display, just under the search box, you
will see a drop-down list box which will most likely be set to Playlist.
Simply change that to Songs. That's all there is to it. The Playlist will
now appear as it did in iTunes 11 and earlier without any artwork. Be
certain not to confuse the upper-right drop-down list box with the button
labeled "Edit Playlist".

One more thing, you will have to perform step 2 for each playlist. As far
as I can tell, there is no way to change the default view for all the
playlist to display only the songs, at once. The good news is that iTunes
will remember the view for each Playlist.

As I researched this, I discovered that there are a great number of sighted
people who are very unhappy that Apple has made it more difficult to display
merely the songs in a Playlist. They have been sending Apple a lot of
negative feedback. I can only hope that Apple will listen.

Mark

Re: Any good lyrics apps?

2015-09-29 Thread Jessica Moss
They aren't? How so?
I remember this program you could download ages ago that coinsided with
winamp called evilyrics, that generated them, when you played a track through
winamp, at least 99.9% of the time it would, and I loved that thing to death.
I think with apps like soundhound, you can find the lyrics to a song if the
app picks it up, which most of the time it will.

Most churches purchase something called a CCLI (Church Copyright License -
ccli.com) which covers projection, song sheets, recording the service etc. So
an iPhone app would need to pay some kind of fees to the copyright holder for
the music and lyrics. That seems like a facet of the app which would be hard
for the app store reviewers to verify.

Re: iPhone 6S+ vastly improved cellular performance

2015-09-29 Thread Scott Granados
Hi Mary,

SO what you want to do is enter the phone in to test mode.

First, browse somewhere or open your mail, just make sure you generate some
network traffic.

Then go to the phone app and dial *3001#12345#*
and press send

Your phone will enter field test mode. You’ll notice your bars indicator
changes to decibels and a whole menu pops up. Select serving cell measurements
and look for the ul or dl freq it will be 2.275 or 2.075 or will be 700.x. If
you’re not connected using LTE then the menu is a bit different.

Let me know if that helps.

don't know why that restriction would impact us, but some say it does. How can
you test at home as you said you did, to see which band you were using?

Re: Any good lyrics apps?

2015-09-29 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
No offense, but if it wasn't legit to put the lyrics on a web site or app, then
how do professional musicians like myself cross reference the words to songs
that they're going to perform.

For exampel, I'm a worship leader in a church. Yes, we obbviously have to
worry about copyright and what not, but I've never heard anything about lyrics
being placed on a web site as being illegal. Now, if you post the music
itself... that's a completely different story.

I've been using google to find lyrics like crazy for our worship services, but
just figured this way might would be a bit easier. Plus, when at rehursals, I
could look them up on the fly with my phone, if needed.

Chris.

Hmmm. I thought lyrics were another one of those copyright mires that
you can't really share without a whole lot of lawyers getting involved.
Sure there are lyrics sites around the internet but I'm not clear that
those are legit to begin with.

Does anyone know of anything accessible that would do this?

Over time shouldn't the UI for the internet of things simply coalesce into a
pile of apps for your iPhone? Stop making custom UI controllers/remotes and
just make apps. Then accessibility would be more possible and you wouldn't need
to find one of the 20 little remotes. For example, the Honeywell app doesn't
work with voiceover beyond letting me know the current temperature and that
it's following the schedule, but it's far more likely they can/will fix that
than to get the touch screen on the wall speaking.

Re: iPhone 6S+ vastly improved cellular performance

If you plan to use 3D touch, I would think it would be worth it. I've
also noticed some improvement of battery life over the 6, though this
could be iOS 9 or something else. I know the battery in the 6S is
actually slightly smaller.

Re: Sorry for cross posting but i thought you'd might like to know this

2015-09-29 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Over time shouldn't the UI for the internet of things simply coalesce
into a pile of apps for your iPhone? Stop making custom UI
controllers/remotes and just make apps. Then accessibility would be more
possible and you wouldn't need to find one of the 20 little remotes. For
example, the Honeywell app doesn't work with voiceover beyond letting me
know the current temperature and that it's following the schedule, but
it's far more likely they can/will fix that than to get the touch screen
on the wall speaking.

Re: iPhone 6S+ vastly improved cellular performance

2015-09-29 Thread Scott Granados
Depends on your use case.

If you’re a T-Mobile customer I would suggest it highly because you’ll get the
band 12 (700 mhz) band access that you can’t in the 6. It’s quite a bit faster
although the 6 was fast enough and the battery life is very good.

T-Mobile gave me a good deal, if you can get a good price point / finance
option I would probably go for it. It’s enough of an upgrade

iPhone 6S+ vastly improved cellular performance

2015-09-29 Thread Scott Granados
Wondering if anyone else if finding their experience while on the cell network
is vastly improved. I’m on T-Mobile and may be taking advantage of their new
bands but I don’t think they are active in my area yet do to conflicts with a
TV station on channel 51. I did test at home and checked the frequency used
and it was the old 2 GHZ band but the connection was far more stable, I never
lost LTE at home and didn’t drop calls. Well done Apple, good choice going to
Qualcomm for your radios, much appreciated. Are others experiencing the same
either on T-Mobile or any cell network in general?

Thanks
Scott

Re: question re setting up new iPhone

2015-09-29 Thread Scott Granados
I absolutely agree with you. If you think about it, the raw power of these
phones is more than most computers I have ever owned combined. Starting with
the first 0.996 MHZ Apple 2E I owned on up through the P4 period, even some of
my unix hardware. Add them all together and you still fall short. It’s a wild
time to be alive with the technology available now.

Also, +1 on the improved fingerprint censor and another big thank you for the
much improved cellular performance and better radio. Massive improvement on
the radio side!

I think Apple pre ordered a bunch of hardware this time. From what I heard on
CNBC they said they have filled 13 million orders as of yesterday morning.
That’s unbelievable. If only the stock price would follow.:) I could off set

would be in stores this morning so waited and when they weren’t there
ended up ordering direct so I should have mine next week.

Seamonkey acessibility

2015-09-29 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Say,

Anybody here tried Seamonkey? I know there's a Mac version, but, given that
Firefox for the Mac has such a long way yet to go even after all these years, I
don't have much hope for a positive answer. Thanks.

Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray,

Still a very happy Mac, Verizon Wireless iPhone6+ and Apple TV user!

Sent from my Mac, The Only computer with full accessibility for the blind
built-in!!!

Sorry for cross posting but i thought you'd might like to know this

2015-09-29 Thread Krister Ekstrom
According to M3 a Swedish magazine for everything mobile and smart phones,
Sonos will soon release a new variant of the Play 5. According to the paper,
the Play5 will have improved sound quality but, and this is the reason i post,
the physical buttons will be replaced by touch functions and we all know what
that means to someone blind or visually impaired. Is it time to look at other
multiroom streaming solutions?

When you set up a new iPhone, you are prompted to restore from Previous
Backup, or Set up as new iPhone. I always choose the latter, as i didn't
know what the repercussions would be of choosing restore from existing
Backup. But I've sometimes thought I was creating extra work for myself.
Just wondering what everyone else does?
