Re: ibooks is driving me crazy

2015-11-08 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

I should clarify that my trouble with ibooks is on the mac not on my ipad or
iPhone. On my mac, iBooks gets constantly busy when I try to read. There are
buttons in the window that should allow you to move to next or previous page
but they don't seem to do what they are supposed to. That is if I manage to
get out of the reading area. And even if I do, Voiceover stops speaking and I
don't know where I am. Also, there is a page picker item in the window. Once
I put Voiceover cursor on it, and then press up and down arrow keys, Voiceover
reports the numbers of the pages changing. So I assume it's a page picker
thing. But when I get back to the text area to resume reading in a new
location I have just chosen, I'm still in the old location. And then the busy
problem starts again. I have installed El Capitan from scratch so it can't be
the installation over the old system that's causing it.

I'm writing to the list about this to make sure it is not just me before I
report it to Accessibility.

Re: ibooks is driving me crazy

2015-11-08 Thread Anne Robertson
Adobe Digital Editions works for reading PDFs but you don’t have the same
ability to read by character, word, line, etc. I use it for reading DRM
protected books from Kobo since the Kobo application doesn’t work on Mac.
Kobo for iOS works pretty well except for turning pages to get to where you
left off in a chapter. For that, you have to turn VoiceOver off and do a
one-finger swipe left to turn a page.
It stops reading at the end of a chapter, at which point you double-tap on an
item labelled iPad Scrubber Arrows to the right of Location in Book. It says
iPad whether you read on an iPad or an iPhone.
For the Library, it has to be organised by title, as the list of books by
author is not accessible.
I really need to write a user guide for Applevis. Oh yes, and Braille works
fine with Kobo.

Cheers,

Anne

 Hello Jessica,

If you just did an update to Yosemite, you should try doing a clean

Re: update on voiceover issue.

2015-11-08 Thread Melanie Clouser
Sounds exactly like the problem I’ve been having since doing updates. Going to
try the clean install of Yosemite. I had hoped to wait for Apple to release an
update to Yosemite before doing the upgrade but this problem has me stumped. I
only updated the app store updates. Not the Yosemite upgrade.

Re: ibooks is driving me crazy

2015-11-08 Thread Eileen Scrivani
If you can access the table of contents, I believe you must choose the page
from the TOC in El Capitan. But, I forget how you get to the reading area.
Before I went back to Yosemite, if I remember correctly, it would always skip
back to a previous page where I had a book mark set.

Subject: ibooks is driving me crazy

Hi,

I don't seem to be able to work out anything in ibooks under El Capitan.

I can't open any menus, I can't find preferences, I don't seem to be able to
read books or change pages in a book, please help! This is desperate. I feel
so helpless. Ibooks gets busy very often when I land on the reading area which
it doesn't report anyway. How do I go from page to page if I want to skip
pages, or chapter to chapter?

Many thanks, in frustration

Andrew

2015-11-08 Thread Sadam Ahmed
Hi,

AppleVis has put together a list detailing the current issues.

http://www.applevis.com/blog/mac-os-x-news/accessibility-bugs-os-x-1011-el-capitan-serious-minor.

Many of these problems persist even after the update pushed out most recently.

If you have a secondary Mac no problems go ahead with the installation.

Otherwise just wait for these bugs to be sorted out.

Outlook Mail or iOS Mail I wonder who likes what?

2015-11-08 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
I have just installed outlook on my phone to see what it was like.

As I had two step verification, I had to generate an app specific password
which I found out by accident. Before at work I could not install iCloud mail
for some reason but I thought I’d give it a go here.

So I opened Outlook to see what it was like.

After playing around with it, I have decided that I like my IOS mail. However
I’m going to keep my Outlook just in case I can get an out of office
verification as I am going to try and put my work exchange mail on my phone in
due course once I find out the settings for my work account.

So I was wondering for those who use outlook mail on their I phone, which do
you like, outlook or IOS mail? Just curious.

Hi!
Or by a fit headless adapter which is a hdmi plug with a squared peace of
rubber or plastic.
I guess its a circuit inside the rubber box that tells the mac its a screen

 Hello Everyone,

I am cross-posting this to both the v iPhone and the Mac Visionaries
 mailing
 list.

 SUMMARY:
One glitch I've noticed in iOS 9.1, that I was finally able to verify on
multiple devices, this week, is that, sometimes, when VoiceOver is enabled,
receiving a text message alert will first wake up and then prevent the
display from going to sleep. To be more precise, I have encountered this
same glitch when any app is set to display notification alerts, as opposed
to banners but have decided, for brevity's sake, to focus on text message
 alerts, only.

This can cause a great deal of battery drain, in a short time, depending
upon the level of the screen brightness.

 SCENARIO:
 1.
Make certain you have your device set to use your fingerprint in order to
 quickly unlock the device.

 2.
Set the message notification to sounds and alerts; also make certain you
 can
see the messages in both your notification center and on the lock screen.

 3.
 Now lock the screen.

 4.
Receive a text message from someone.

 5.
If the glitch happens, the screen will wake up, displaying a dialog box
giving you the option to either close the alert or reply to the message.

 CONCLUSION:
Even when an alert is received, the display is supposed to remain off until
activated by the user. However, on a very intermittent basis, the alert
will wake up the screen and it will not go back to sleep until the alert is
dismissed. I estimate that this happens once out of every 20 or so alerts.
However, when it happens, the battery will just sit there and drain as the
screen remains active until the alert is dismissed. This also has the
collateral affect of heating up the phone. I have not attempted to
reproduce this issue on any device not running VoiceOver.

My solution to this is to switch the alert notifications to banners for my
 most frequently used apps.

Ok, I have a few PDF's that I've just been using preview for. How is Adobe
Digital Editions different? And how is Kobo different than Kindle or iBooks.
I'm not a huge fan of Kindle because a lot of the books I'd like to read are
only on free sample.
But iBooks on the phone is lovely if I could just get the app store to stop
signing in and out every reboot it'd be lovely too but restoring the phone did
not fix that but that's another thread it's only related to this one because I
had to click thrice to buy a book yesterday. :)

No, and it turns out that the graphics cards can’t be used to their full
potential without a physical adaptor anyway; for example, no CUDA or Stream
computation.

Get a pack of FitHeadless units. They really are very elegant, it’s a one-time
purchase, and they’ll help you in the future if you ever need to run a
machine—even a Windows machine—without a monitor.

iBooks is very annoying by nature, but it’s not nonfunctional—at least, not by
Apple’s present-day standards. It sounds like you’re having a right time of
it, though, and there’s probably something wrong in your particular
installation.

At the very least, can you explore the main window and press on the “Get

Re: ibooks is driving me crazy

2015-11-08 Thread Anne Robertson
For me, iBooks in Mac OS X El Capitán, iBooks is working OK. I have it set to 2
pages and can either read using VO-a or by sentence, paragraph, etc.

In fact, I much prefer Adobe Digital Editions on the Mac, and Kobo on the
iPhone to read eBooks. Besides, living in France, there are lots of English
language iBooks I can’t get. I don’t have this problem with either Kobo or
Kindle.
For about a year, the latest versions of Kobo for iOS weren’t accessible, but
they’ve fixed most of the problems now.

Cheers,

Anne

iMovie

2015-11-08 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hello folks,

Somehow this message did not get through. I am needing to work on some
video projects and want to use iMovie on the Mac. All I can find is
the tutorial for the iPad. The iMovie seems to be not very accessible.
I see t "voiceover" where you can record your voice over a visual film
shot but I cannot seem to figure out how to make an actual video
involving both audio and visual. This is for recording youtube clips
of my music as well as some presentations. I hope I am clear.
Thank you for your help and let me know if you need further clarification.

Kindly,
Vaughn

You didn't read the message very carefully. It requires command plus option
plus the letters are and P, not simply command RP. I have done this recently
and it works as advertised hold command option RP until you hear the chime four
times then release you'll hear the chime one more time as it reboots.

2015-11-08 Thread Jessica Moss
Ok, I followed the instructions according to what you posted, and it all the
computer did was simply restart itself. I did command+r+p, altogether, then
pressed the power button, with these held down, and it just restarted like
normal, so have no idea what to make of it; then tried it pressing and holding
the power button with all of them held down, and it restarted, then shut it
self down, so not sure what to make of this, and is still acting up.

Re: Any fix for a Mini with no screen yet?

2015-11-08 Thread Daniel Miller
Hi Alex,

Unfortunately, the only fix is to get a newer model mac mini, as those don’t
exhibit the same issues as the older ones did, I believe.

Subject: Clean install of El Capitan

Hello everyone,

I know this has been covered before, but here’s how to do a clean install of El
Capitán.

Cheers,

Anne

Download El Capitán from the Appstore.
When it opens the installer, quit it.
Make sure you have a spare 8 gb USB drive and give it the name Untitled.
Prepare your USB Flash Drive.

To format the USB drive open Disk Utility. Plug the drive into your Mac.

Select the USB Flash drive from the table in Disk Utility.
Select the “Erase” tab.
Make sure the Format is set to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
As for the name, leave it as “Untitled”.
Finally click the Erase tab.

Terminal Command

Simply copy and paste this into Terminal and press the Return key:

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\
Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled
--applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction

Since the above command uses the sudo attribute you will be required to enter
your password to start the process.

Once the process starts you will see this in Terminal:

Erasing Disk: 0%… 10%… 20%…100%…
Copying installer files to disk…
Copy complete.
Making disk bootable…
Copying boot files…
Copy complete.
Done.

This process can take a while since it’s copying gigabytes of data over. Leave
it alone and let it do its thing.

Installation.

First of all, make sure you have a Time Machine backup of your system, then
shut down your computer.
With the installer USB drive plugged in, hold down the Option key and press the
Power key.
Give it about 30 seconds, then press Right arrow once if you have no recovery
partition, or twice if you have.
Press Return and wait.
After a few minutes, press Cmd-F5 to start VoiceOver.
The first screen is the Language Chooser, so press Continue.
You should now have a table of Utilities. Select Disk Utility and erase your
internal hard drive. (Sometimes, VoiceOver gets stuck at this point and you may
need sighted help to get out of trouble).
Once the HD is erased, select the installer and let it do its thing.
Eventually, you will be asked if you have another computer or a Time Machine
backup. This is the point at which you connect your Time Machine drive, and
just follow the instructions.

All your applications and data will be restored, except for any apps that are
not compatible with El Capitán.

Any fix for a Mini with no screen yet?

2015-11-08 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I’m on my 2011 Mini, now with a shiny new SSD in it. It would be blazing fast…
Except for that bug where things are randomly busy unless you connect a
monitor. I know I could connect a monitor, and I think there’s a box I could
buy that would trick the Mini into thinking there’s a monitor. Is there a
better way, though, a way to truly run this with no screen and no more money
sunk into it? I’m on the latest 10.11, but this has been happening since 10.7
when I first got this machine. Thanks in advance.

How To Enable the Google Less Secure Apps Feature

2015-11-08 Thread M. Taylor
Hello,

I changed the subject line of this thread to more closely reflect the current
discussion.

Okay, I looked this up for you and the following is the easiest and most screen
reader accessible way to change this setting in your Google account.

To enable the Less Secure Apps feature, do the following:

1.
Using your preferred web browser, sign in to your gMail account. Do not close
the browser. This step merely insures that you are correctly signed into your
gMail account.

2.
Now, in the address bar of your preferred browser, used in step 1, paste in the
following URL:
http://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps

3.
Now, simply switch the radio button from off to on. Your setting will be
automatically saved.

That's all there is to it.

Following my signature, I will paste in the original Google support article on
this along with its URL.

Good Luck,

Mark

Allowing less secure apps to access your account
Google may block sign-in attempts from some apps or devices that do not use
modern security standards. Since these apps and devices are easier to break
into, blocking them helps keep your account safe.

Some examples of apps that do not support the latest security standards include:

•The Mail app on your iPhone or iPad with iOS 6 or below
•The Mail app on your Windows phone preceding the 8.1 release
•Some Desktop mail clients like Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird
Change account access for less secure apps
To help keep Google Apps users' accounts secure, we may block less secure apps
from accessing Google Apps accounts. As a Google Apps user, you will see a
"Password incorrect" error when trying to sign in. If this is the case, you
have two options:

•Option 1: Upgrade to a more secure app that uses the most up to date security
measures. All Google products, like Gmail, use the latest security measures.
•Option 2: Change your settings to allow less secure apps to access your
account. We don't recommend this option because it might make it easier for
someone to break into your account. If you want to allow access anyway, follow
these steps:
1.Go to the "Less secure apps" section in My Account.
2.Next to "Access for less secure apps," select Turn on. (Note to Google Apps
users: This setting is hidden if your administrator has locked less secure app
account access.)

Hi Denise,

I have run into this issue a few times while assisting others set up their
Gmail account in Outlook on a Windows machine. Apparently, Gmail does not
consider Outlook or the Mail app on the Mac to be secure. Going from memory,
what had to be done is that we had to sign into the Gmail account using the web
interface. Once there, we had to activate the link for Manage My Account. On
this page there was a link that said something about Security, activate this
link. Here is where I ran into trouble, at least using JAWS on a PC. There is
an option to Allow Less Secure Apps and this option is off by default.
Unfortunately, although it was always easy to locate the heading where this
option was available, JAWS would not identify the option located below the
heading as a checkbox and neither would any other Windows screen reader; I did
not try this with the Mac and Voiceover. If you have sighted assistance,
perhaps they can help with this last step. Once Allow Less Secure Apps is
enabled, all will work as it should.

I apologize I cannot provide the exact steps but hope the information above
will be enough to get you where you need to be.

We strongly recommend that you use a secure app, like Gmail, to access your
account. All apps made by Google meet these security standards. Using a less
secure app, on the other hand, could leave your account vulnerable. Learn more.

Mauricio, you are right: you have to go into your Google account on the web
page, find settings and then activate the "less secure apps". It can be
managed on the mac.
