Re: couple of questions re Audio descriptions on NetFlix

2016-05-21 Thread Helga Schreiber
Hi all! How are you all? I have a question, I have the iPhone Netflix app,
but I don't have an apple TV. However, i do ahve a Mac computer, can I watch
my movies in audio description? I'm just wondering. I'm actually going to share
my brother's Netflix account, and he uses it on his mac computer, and my mom
uses it in her windows computer. Would it cause any problem if I turn audio
description on the iphone app in order to watch my movies on my mac? Just
wondering. I never watch a movie on my mac yet, so I assume I need to go to
netflix.com in order to search for the movie i want and so on right? Or Ican i
serch it on my Netfflix app,and it will come out on my Mac? I'm sorry for the
questions, I'm just very new on this! I have a 2015 Macbook Air 11 inches
computer. I will really appreciate any help you can offer me regarding this
matter! I look forward in hearing from you soon. Thanks and God bless!

I’m not keen on the fact that one of my neighbours can turn my tv and apple tv
on, it appears that my neighbour I’m not sure which one, also has an apple tv
that turns on my tv and apple tv at all kinds of time day or night.

I’m trying to find out if I can stop it at all.

  Hi,

Using QuickTime, if you can have each of the segments in .mov, .mp4 or
.m4v, then QuickTime will work well with them. If your intro, body and
conclusion are three separate segments, then you can simply create a new
QuickTime file and paste in each segment. They will be placed one after
another, thus creating one document. You can then save it and there is the
facility to upload directly to YouTube from within quickTime. Play with it a
little. It's quite a powerful tool and easy to use.

It is an XML file format that is used by Daisy books and some other
applications. It is like pls on steroids, and what causes the text and speech
to be synchronised on Daisy books.

I don't know much more about it, but It might be hidden somehow in
MPEG4 files which can contain several tracks of encoded information.

But just look at the files from a NLS book and one or more of them will
be SMIL files.

Best wishes,

SMIL be can be used to synchronize multiple feeds. I believe that
QuickTime has a ability of merging in multiple things and getting them
synchronize too, though I have no idea how accessible it is.

Hi Chris,

It's cool really, it's just not as easy to figure out as it was in earlier
versions.

Rather than having different tabs, now everything is under one and you
select the tab or area such as sorting or options and then scrole down to
each field you want to edit.

But yeah if you want to create a step by step, that would be great.

I confess, the Get Info area isn't something I've yet explored. I can try

The same? All I’ve got here is playlists and devices—is that not all that
appears in the sidebar?

The sidebar was useful, but as so often happens, I somehow managed to
adapt

to the new layout, and now forget why exactly I thought so at the time …

Overall, I like the new structure. For example, one can now get to every
playlist, and not just those per category. Then there is the new
per-category menu, and the chapter-skipping hotkeys. All very handy.

Poor Windows users, though. Out in the cold again. I wonder if the
screen

reader model in use on that platform is even compatible with this class of
application, or whether it will ever be. It seems to me to be a rather
unsatisfactory situation over there. There’s only so much you can do with
the system focus and Tab key. :)

Guys,

I'm so sorry it took so long to get this thing uploaded. Screenflow and I
were fighting this morning pretty badly. I got it though.

So, here's what I'm gonna do. I'm going to give you all two links. OK?
The first link is going to be to my entire Youtube channel. I plan to do
quite a few more mac tutorials, along with other content as well, especially
now that I've learned how to use Youtube much better than what I used to.
So, I really really really would like it if all of you could subscribe to my
channel. I'd absolutely love! to start getting some traffic there.
Admittedly, right now, this is my first video, so forgive the fact firstly
that my mike indeed was a bit loud, and did clip a great deal in places. I
know what caused this though, and will definitely have that issue fixed
going forward. It's not terrible, don't get me wrong, but if you're really
picky, then just know, it is definitely noticeable.

Anyway, so let's start with that link. So, my actual channel is at:

http://www.youtube.com/c/chrisgilland

You'll know you're on the correct page, if it says "Gilland Marketing."

Once on this page, you can actually manually find the video just by
navigating by heading. It'll be pretty obvious. If, however, you want to
go directly to this video, you have two choices.

You can go to the actual Youtube video page itself, which is at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHGc_5XqEGY

Or, you can go to my business's website, which is:

http://www.gillandmarketing.com
Once there, VO+Right arrow until you find the link that says "Blog".
VO+Space on that link, then on the next page, navigate again by heading.
It'll be pretty obvious. I have an embedded Youtube player right there
after clicking on the title of the post where you can watch the video
straight from my website. So, really it's totally up to you how you wanna
do this.

Anyway, I hope that this helps clear up any confusion you guys may have
about the sidebar, as well as how to navigate the Music section. It's
pretty easy once you learn it, but admittedly, Apple definitely could have
done a much better job at this in this latest update, in my personal not so
humble opinion. LOL!

  Hi,

Using QuickTime, if you can have each of the segments in .mov, .mp4 or .m4v,
then QuickTime will work well with them. If your intro, body and conclusion
are three separate segments, then you can simply create a new QuickTime file
and paste in each segment. They will be placed one after another, thus
creating one document. You can then save it and there is the facility to
upload directly to YouTube from within quickTime. Play with it a little. It's
quite a powerful tool and easy to use.

OK, so here is the situation. One of the things I'm doing with my

  By the way:

  http://youtube.gillandmarketing.com

Anyway, so two things. First off, I was using screenflow to record
the videos, as with it, I can capture my microphone as well as my screen

Really though, that's aside the point.

So, I was chatting this morning via Twitter with a guy who is
apparently totally sighted who found my Youtube channel totally by coencidence.
One thing I did in my first video was, I thought it would be a nice touch to
allow people to see the face behind who was making these videos. So, one thing
Screenflow will let you do, and BTW, my question isn't about screenflow, so if
you're not familiar with it, don't worry. Just let me set some background, and

put a little thumbnail in your video of a live image from your eyesight webcam.
So therefore, I was able to have that little thumbnail in the bottom right

I mentioned about who's sighted told me that is actually very distracting
having that webcam image there. He suggested to start with no mac screen, but
just a simple picture of me on camera, then after about 5 to 30 at
most seconds, transition over to my mac's screen, and do *not!* have me remain
on the screen, not even as a thumbnail. Then maybe wrap things up at the end
by flipping back again to my face.

So, screenflow won't do this, as far as I know. At least not with

Outlook for Windows supports RSS feeds but Outlook 2016 for Mac does not. In
the Windows version, articles in feeds can be viewed similarly to Email
messages. It’s really quite elegant actually, and if you have a Microsoft
Exchange account it’ll even sync the entries to your account so they can be
viewed in the mail apps on a Mac or iOS device. But of course, you need an
instance of Outlook open for the updates to happen.

Hello Junior,

In the ReadKit file menu there is an “add feed subscription” item which you
can also access by hitting the COMMAND+N shortcut. Here you can enter the
address to a feed--or, I believe, the URL to a website that links to a feed.

There is also the option to import an OPML file in the file menu within
ReadKit, but this option is dimmed for me. I think this is due to me syncing
with an external service, Feedly, which allows you to import OPML files via the
www.feedly.com website. An OPML file contains the addresses to a bunch of feeds
that you can subscribe to all at once. If you’ve used another feed reader in
the past, there’s a good chance you can export your subscriptions to this
format from that program.

Sorry this answer is a bit unclear, but I hope it helps somewhat. Let me
know if you’d like me to clarify any of this.

  Hi Brandon,

I use ReadKit. It syncs with all kinds of third party services such as
Feedly, Instapaper, and Pocket. It has a nice, simple list-based interface with
lots of keyboard shortcuts. With one hotkey you can fetch the full text of a
given article using Readability. I use ReadKit on a daily basis to manage my
RSS feeds and my Instapaper account. I use Lire on my iPhone and both Lire and
ReadKit are set up to sync with my Feedly account so once an article is marked
as read on one device, I do not need to see it on my other devices. You can get
it from the Mac App Store here:
https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/readkit/id588726889?mt=12

  Hope this helps,

You can’t connect it directly through the Bluetooth menu. You need to
select the Voice Utility, VO F8 and arrow down until you get to braille.
I have just connected my Focus 40 Blue to make sure and it works although
i find braille on the mac not very useful. I wish it was but thus far no
work is being done to change this. Just my opinion.

2016-05-21 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Already done. It's on my Youtube channel. Note that some have been
reporting to have issues with the URL. I think it might be a DNS issue.
Try:

http://youtube.gillandmarketing.com

If that doesn't work, then I guarantee this link'll work:

http://www.youtube.com/c/chrisgilland

There are only two videos there so far at time of this writing, so it
shouldn't be terribly hard to find.

I can try
doing so, and see if I can figure it out though. If I can, I'll make a

The same? All I’ve got here is playlists and devices—is that not all that
appears in the sidebar?

The sidebar was useful, but as so often happens, I somehow managed to adapt
to the new layout, and now forget why exactly I thought so at the time …

Overall, I like the new structure. For example, one can now get to every
playlist, and not just those per category. Then there is the new
per-category menu, and the chapter-skipping hotkeys. All very handy.

Poor Windows users, though. Out in the cold again. I wonder if the screen
reader model in use on that platform is even compatible with this class of
application, or whether it will ever be. It seems to me to be a rather
unsatisfactory situation over there. There’s only so much you can do with
the system focus and Tab key. :)

I still don't love the touch surface. I'm obviously somewhat retrograde in
this area. It just doesn't work consistently for me. That is why I am so
grateful for Bluetooth keyboard support.

Hey Alex,

I did see it on my phone, but never heard any audio descriptions. Not sure if
this was because of the older Apple TV, or because that particular program
didn't have it. Anyway, it's all up and running now on both the TV and my

thanks again for the help.

How to set up Facebook posts to be a text message?

2016-05-21 Thread maurice.mines
Good afternoon, I’m looking for some advice on how to set up Facebook so that
it behaves like a message, so that I can use it in messages? Does anyone know
how to do this? It’s one of the very few things that I’ve not done on my Mac.
Hope everyone’s afternoon is going well. If you wish to respond off list, feel

the list. Thanks for any help them and might be willing to offer in advance.

Sincerely Maurice mines.

Dragon 4.0 for the Mac, if there’s something you truly do not understand that I

misunderstandings.

Re: RSS Reader

2016-05-21 Thread Grant
Hi Brandon,

There are several things which come to mind that I love about ReadKit:

1. The fact that it syncs with read later services like Instapaper, so I can
view my saved Instapaper articles alongside my feeds.

2. That it syncs with Feedly, a service which you don’t have to pay for on an
annual basis.

3. That with one hotkey you can fetch the full text of a selected article
without having to open the full webpage for the article. This uses Readability
to parse the text.

4. That the built-in keyboard shortcuts are very convenient, such as “m” to
mark selected articles as read, “f” to star an article, “b” to open the
selected article in your default web browser, and “g” to fetch the full text of
an article.

5. The fact that you can set notifications only for articles which match
certain criteria. Note: you may be able to do this in Vienna, but I don’t
remember this capability.

6. I know this sounds a bit irrational, but I like the fact that ReadKit comes
from the Mac App Store and is therefore signed and sandboxed. Of course, that
doesn’t mean one should avoid software from other sources, and in fact the free
and open source model of Vienna is fantastic; but I think all other things
being equal, if two pieces of software worked identically and one was in the
Mac App Store, I’d probably choose that one.

Since it’s been so long since I’ve used Vienna on a daily basis, I can’t really
give a comparison about any difference in reliability between the two apps. If
Vienna is working, and if you don’t rely heavily on a read later service,
there’s probably no reason to switch.

In the end, I went back to rss2email. It is not as convenient as using
something like Readkit, but it’s a lot more portable and flexible. Using
rss2email is not simple.

Pair with a Mac? Not sure what you mean there. But yes, you can pair the Apple
TV with a Bluetooth keyboard. Ours is paired with my older style Apple
Bluetooth keyboard. You can do airplay from the Mac. But I don't think that's
what you meant, is it?

Nevertheless, it's odd you didn't see the option on your phone either, as it's
absolutely there on iOS9. Possibly iOS8 as well, I don't remember.

Yes, you can pair a keyboard directly with the newest Apple TV. I don't know
the exact steps, but it was a feature in a recent update so guides will be all
over the web.

Accessible Mac App Lists?

Hi,

I understand that there are more Mac apps that are not listed in the
iTunes/AppStore. Are there a bunch of sites where we can download accessible
Mac apps?

Thanks,

Re: Focus Blue 40 braille display not working on the Mac computer when using Bluetooth

2016-05-21 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Kawal,
To assign a command on a Braille display, press the Assign command button, then
press the Add button.
Press Cmd-b then quickly press the key combination on your Braille device that
you wish to use. You’ll then find a menu button where you can select the
appropriate action.

You have to be quick putting in the key combination on your Braille display as
you only have 5 seconds and the computer makes a sort of clanging noise for the
whole time.

Cheers,

Anne

Yep. We actually checked the model number, and it was in fact a second GEN. I
was quite surprised. Sorry for sending everyone on a wild goose chase. :-)

We are now the proud owners of a fourth GEN Apple TV! :-)

One question, what's the deal with the keyboard? Can a pair with the Mac or
does it need to be paired with a dedicated Bluetooth keyboard?

I use the same combination although I would like to know of a comparable way to

I do not remember Readkit ever crashing even a single time. Not sure about

Hi Brandon,

I use ReadKit. It syncs with all kinds of third party services such as Feedly,
Instapaper, and Pocket. It has a nice, simple list-based interface with lots of

article using Readability. I use ReadKit on a daily basis to manage my RSS
feeds and my Instapaper account. I use Lire on my iPhone and both Lire and
ReadKit are set up to sync with my Feedly account so once an article is marked
as read on one device, I do not need to see it on my other devices. You can get
it from the Mac App Store here:

Hope this helps,

Re: Incoming call quirk

2016-05-21 Thread Tim Kilburn
hi Mark,

Essentially, in this case, he was ending a call. He believed that he may have
initiated a call-back from the notification item on the screen. So, the idea
here is that the screen may have been locked, but active, and his actions
caused a call-back to possibly be initiated. Therefore, the two-finger
double-tap should, and likely would, end this action, terminating the possible
outgoing call. If the call had not actually been initiated, then either music
would start playing or, simply nothing.

Later...

Maybe I'm missing a key piece of information but never have I performed a

Re: couple of questions re Audio descriptions on NetFlix

2016-05-21 Thread Daniel Miller
Hi Donna. Yes, it looks like your AppleTV is a second generation model. Even
then, that's not how you activate audio descriptions and Netflix. It's done
within the Netflix app itself. Press the center button on the remote, and hold
it. Whatever you're watching will stop, and voiceover should let you navigate
the screen. There's an audio tab, and in that tab there should be a choice for
audio description. If you don't see it, you definitely have a second-generation
Apple TV.

Re: Incoming call quirk

2016-05-21 Thread E.T.

Mark,
Now that you mention it, that may not be what I need after all. What
happened to me yesterday was likely a fluke. I do not think I actually
answered the call because it had come in about 20 minutes earlier. I was
unaware of it so when I pulled the phone out to use it. I did something
that resulted in the message "all circuits are busy, try again" or
something to that effect. The phone was in a loop and I could not stop
it so did a reboot.

You know, I'm not seeing any of this. All I see is Voiceover, Use Pitch,
Speech rate, Accessibility menu--which only seems to include VO and captioning.
I would have sworn it was 3rd gen, but now I'm starting to wonder if our Apple
TV is a second Gen after all.

If I can't do it using the Apple TV, I assume I can do it on my iPhone.
Can someone refresh my memory on how to do that?

Whoa boy, I think you’re both on to something. I think the best game plan is
for me to campaign for Trump, get him elected and then the next day move to New
Zealand and hang out with Simon. That’s the farthest place from here that I
can think of that speaks English other than the Ant Arctic science stations.
That should solve the short term nuclear fall out problem, of course I’ve seen
the Beach and remember how that ended up. Eventually it makes it to the
southern hemisphere but hey at least act that point there’s no more Hillary or
Trump to deal with.

Ah well, here’s hoping the bees do better than we did. Or the Scorpions, they

Donna I have the same air as you have and yes portability was one of the

However if they start this year producing air devices with the mobile
processors then I will be looking at the pros first.

I’d love to think though that they will go with the air being able to run 16

Hey Scott,

One caveat I would add here is that it depends on how important portability is.
the Air is much nicer to carry around, especially if you're also hauling a
braille display. Just something to consider. I chose the Air over the Pro for
its portability, not due to cost.

That aside, with your requirement I’d probably go with an Apple Macbook pro and
you could go with a 13 inch model to save on the cost if you wanted. There are
both i5 and i7 options for processors so you could spend as much as you wanted

with all things equal I’d go with a pro model.
I would also budget $100 or so for VMWare fusion for running that
windows instance on top of OS X. It’s in my mind preferable to boot camp since
you have both options at the same time, others may disagree.

That’s my suggestion.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

RE: iTunes SideBar, Anyone?

Hi Chris,

It's cool really, it's just not as easy to figure out as it was in earlier
versions.

Rather than having different tabs, now everything is under one and you select
the tab or area such as sorting or options and then scrole down to each field
you want to edit.

But yeah if you want to create a step by step, that would be great.

I confess, the Get Info area isn't something I've yet explored. I can try
doing so, and see if I can figure it out though. If I can, I'll make a Youtube
walkthrough just like I did with the Music area.

I Still can't get my head around the get info layout now, I want to be able
to edit my music and books metadata bu t the new layout is crazy compared to
the older version,

Like anything, if it's not broken don't try and fix it.

I do agree. I feel sorry for those Windows users, and that's not me being
sarcastic. I honestly don't know why Apple couldn't just have left as well
enough alone, but, whatever, I guess.
