Re: Wireless router?

2016-06-06 Thread E.T.
Landlord will say no way! The other (and better) half says hurry it
up already and fix this!

I have 3 things to try that will not cost. But Scott pointed out
something important and that is the age of my router which has gray hair
now. So I will be shopping for a new router even if I get things
working. As always, appreciate the assistance.

You may also need to consult your landlord if this means boring through
exterior walls.

Second option: HomePlug. If you have circuits on the same distribution board,
you can use your mains power lines. Caution: these things screech like mad
into the radio spectrum. Consult your friendly radio ham first. The people
who sell these things don’t care, but he or she might, and you don’t want to
upset your neighbours.

Final option: wireless. It is preferable—but not required—that you use
products from the same vendor. WDS has the home advantage and gives you a
proper wireless backbone, i.e. Apple gear configured with one as primary, the
other extender. If you can wait long enough for new AirPorts, that’s what I’d
grab.

Re: Wireless router?

2016-06-06 Thread Scott Granados
Two different animals here.

A range extender is a good dirt simple option but it cuts your effective
throughput in half eah time you extend.
Depending on your router it may be time to upgrade, newer technologies
carry farther and penetrate further or are just more sensitive. AC networking
for example uses beam forming and directionalizing technologies to make things
more efficient and also function better.

You could also put in an access point that connects to your existing router and
is wired up say mid way between your library and router to provide another
source of signal.

Lots of ways to solve that problem.

Yes, and I've tried it in both positions. However, I also have a USB adapter,
