Apple has rolled out a patch
 for three previously
unknown zero-day exploits that were used to hack into the iPhone 6 of
Ahmed Mansoor, an award-winning human rights activist based in the
United Arab Emirates. Security company Lookout

and internet watchdog group Citizen Lab

investigated the attack on Mansoor's iPhone and found it to be the
product of NSO Group, a "cyber war" organization based in Israel
that's responsible for distributing a powerful, government-exclusive
spyware product called Pegasus.

The hack took advantage of three zero-day exploits that allowed the
attackers to jailbreak Mansoor's iPhone and install spyware to track
his movements, record his WhatsApp and Viber calls, log his messages
and access his microphone and camera. Given the high cost of iPhone
zero-days and the use of a government-specific spyware product,
Citizen Lab believes the UAE is behind the hack. The UAE has
previously targeted

Mansoor.

"We are not aware of any previous instance of an iPhone remote
jailbreak used in the wild as part of a targeted attack campaign,
making this a rare find," Citizen Lab writes.

Once Citizen Lab discovered the zero-days, it contacted Apple and says
the company responded promptly. Apple released a software update
today, iOS 9.3.5 , that
addresses the three flaws.

not wait for too soon, they will be back in high school.

Nice app. Thanks for the tip on the mislabeled button. Not at all
bad for a free app.

bluejeans network

2016-08-25 Thread Jean
Hi Simon and All:

The Bluejeans network is a video conferencing service similar to Zoom and Linda
I guess. It is used for a lot of global academic applications. The interesting
thing about it though is that it calibrates to the band width potential of each
user. So if you have a mix of participants with some having high-speed capacity
and others having only audio phone capability, it adjusts. This makes it
possible for people to participate who have little or no tech infrastructure.

Re: airport express in enterprise

2016-08-25 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I've never used it with a Radius server other than Xserve., but according to
the documentation, it should be totally doable. From what I can tell, just use
Airport Utility to access the Express, then in the Wireless tab, in the
Security area, set it to WPA2 Enterprise. It should ask you for the IP of the
Radius server and Airport Utility should do the rest for you. I can't verify
this for you, but it sounds like it should work and the configuration is quite
simple.

Can someone refresh my memory about the VO page-Down command? All I remember
is that it is some impossible command that requires 27 fingers.
Cheers,

Re: Moving by page in Text Edit/Pages/etc?

2016-08-25 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Alex,

In TextEdit, you need to adjust the window to the page for VO-Page Down to
work. The command to change this is Cmd-Shift-w.

In Pages and in TextEdit, you have to be interacting with the text area for the
Page Down command to work.

The Page Down key only has a visual effect, so it’s actually useless for us.

The VO-Page Down command works for me in both Pages and TextEdit, but not in
Preview.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Avast SecureLine VPN

2016-08-25 Thread David Chittenden
ExpressVPN - The World's Fastest, Most Reliable VPN Provider, Express VPN
receives the best reviews from tech magazines. I have used it and find it
nicely accessible.

Currently I use Free VPN Proxy by BetterNet. It is truly free, and like Express
VPN, allows enough throughput that I am able to watch movies. The problem with
Free VPN Proxy is one is unable to manually set the country server. Instead,
the VPN server access point is determined automatically. This works for apps
like Hulu and Amazon Video where the US is the only option. I am unsure how
well it will work for apps which use multiple countries and adjust content
based on the country (such as NetFlicks). I am switching to NetFlicks when my
Amazon Video subscription ends. At that time, I will probably pay for Express
VPN so I will be able to access the US version of NetFlicks.

I was listening to Leo Laports Tech Guy show last weekend and he had a
caller that was also banned from facebook because of those posts.
Turns out she had Avast for the mac installed on her computer. He told
her to remove Avast and the issue would probably go away as he couldn't
figure anything else out.

Such an attack is called a man in the middle attack.

Re: Recording audio and picture from Safari on Mac

2016-08-25 Thread Jessica Moss
Ok, I’m really confused here, how do you record something through your phone
while plugged into the computer? The whole video/audio process was something
I’ve been wanting to know how to do as well, considering the fact that our
church does live broadcasts, and I’ve wanted to record those on occasion, and
so far, I’ve only been able to get quicktime to either do screenshots, or
audio, and the audio portion recorded via the computer, if you don’t have an
external mic, sounds aweful.
The first time I recorded one of our services, I had to crank the volume up
just to even be able to hear it.

Re: Avast SecureLine VPN

2016-08-25 Thread jeff `greene
Hi Bill,
A vpn hides your location. You go through the vpn's servers all over
the world when surfing. They are a good idea if you use public wifi at
a coffee shop. But, I'd stay away from anything marked avast. I have a
friend who put avast antivirus on his mac and it loaded all kinds of
strange cirts into safari. Later he got banned from facebook for
posting too many things in turkish. He wasn't doing the posting, then
he found out it was those avast cirts.

Moving by page in Text Edit/Pages/etc?

2016-08-25 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I'm not normally in need of a way to move by page, but I find myself suddenly
trying to figure it out now. VO's help reports that the command is vo-pageDown,
but that doesn't seem to do anything. I'm also wondering if there's a macOS
way, much like vo-right moves by word but you should use option-right instead.
I'm aware of how to make the page up/down keys on the Mac, I just don't know
what to pair them with to get them to actually move the cursor by page. Thanks
in advance.

RE: Using Apple TV the fourth generation without a TV

2016-08-25 Thread Simon Fogarty
HI Mary,

I know some sound systems now have an HDMI input which you can plug in the
likes of a blueray or I guess apple tv and then have another HDMI output cable
to your tv so that everything goes through the stereo first before the tv,

Whether you can do this with the tv I can't say

My apple tv 4 is only connected to my Samsung tv, where as with the apple tv 2
I had an optical connector which allowed me to connect to my Logitech stereo
speakers without the tv and I could play videos / tv and music through the
sound system with out the tv screan active.

Subject: Using Apple TV the fourth generation without a TV

Apple viz. recently published a podcast done by Lisa Sullenger on this topic.
She mentions a specific HDMI to audio converter that she used with her stereo.
The one thing she did not touch upon in her podcast has to do with an issue
that has been raised on these lists before regarding the usability of this
system with video content that is protected. I can't remember the name of the
specification or coding or whenever it is involved that must be seen in order
for the AppleTV to pick up the content. Generally, if the AppleTV is not
connected to an actual video output which is actually turned on, you can't get
a lot of this protected video content. So I am wondering about this system with
this particular converter. Has anyone used it or any other converter connecting
AppleTV fourth-generation to a stereo with no TV present and still able to
receive the full complement of all the video channels, such as Netflix, HBO etc.

airport express in enterprise

2016-08-25 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Listers,

Ok, just contemplating upsetting my employers by saving them money.

I have an airport express version 2 device so that is N wifi able.

What I want to know is if anyone has got experience using the airport express
in an enterprise environment

and using WPA2 enterprise authentication
so that is using a Radius serverwith the
express?

And if so was it difficult to install / configure?

Realistically this would be using an airport express device connected to a
network where the enterprise authentication would be through a windows server
2012r2 radius server.

I know the express will do wpa2 enterprise authentication but this I need to
get passed a number of people whom wish to spend 1600 NZ dollars on a single
cisco AP where as the airport express is smaller easier to hide and only 150 nz
dollars,

Thanks for any information.

Cheers,

Simon F

HI Jean,

That's one of those things I guess,

You find the OSX version ok I have trouble with it, you have trouble with the
IOS version I try not to use anything else.

Weird,

I'm having trouble at the moment connecting to my skype for business account
on my ipHone but that's probably a net work issue at my end.

 As for the Bluejeans network,

What is Bluejeans?

RE: Skype for Mac

2016-08-25 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Chris,

Skype for business works in conjunction with a server that you authenticate
against to access it and it gives you things through outlook such as is a work
colleague at their desk before you transfer a call to them via skype for
business,
Voicemail, call forwarding to mobiles or other numbers within your voip system.
Basically it is a business system formily it was known as lynk which was the
Microsoft phone system,

And it gives you built in phone services like voicemail call transferring,
caller id although that is in skype, intergration with outlook or exchange and
the global address book within exchange

Where as skype you only see who you have in your contacts and or who you search
or make a call to.

Skype for business is really just a voip phone system.
