Hello Donna and all:

I convinced all the webinar hosts I deal with to use Zoom instead of Go To

Re: Full Article: iOS 11 public beta: What it does for the iPhone - CNET

2017-06-28 Thread David Chittenden
Yes, I had one of the receivers for a few years whilst living in SF.

The iPhone becomes the receiver. The marked GPS coordinates becomes the
transmitter. The clear speech occurs when the iPhone is directly aligned, and
becomes static as the iPhone's alignment changes in relation to the coordinates
(a virtual transmitter).

Specifically indoor navigation with support for several malls and
airports. I highly expect Tysons Cornerr, a mall that is only two miles
from my house , to be a good candidate. Not only is the mall packed every
weekend and most evenings, it was also the site of the first Apple Retail

I do have a dial-in number, so that will have to do, I suppose. It's
unfortunate, b/c they wanted a video call. I also have a test link. I've
spent some time trying to access it from MY PC, but no joy. So no need for you
to spend your time tomorrow trying to connect, but thank you very much for the

Re: file volt weirdness

2017-06-28 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Yes, but we have folks on the list that get a list of users when starting up a
system with File Vault. It is my opinion, that they are actually still using
File Vault 1 with per a user encryption rather than File Vault 2 with full disk
encryption.
Sorry, I tend to not write enough background material in my posts and have
often gotten people a little confused. In any case, File Vault 2 also means
that if your computer is running then files from anywhere in the system are
accessible, while with File Vault one from the earlier MacOS's each user had
their own encryption, and only the logged users files are available to view
unencrypted.

Re: Go to meeting?

2017-06-28 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Donna,

While the web page is not very accessible, Go To Meeting always has the option
for doing call in to the meeting. I believe I have to Go To Meetings tomorrow,
so I could try to connect via Mac and/or Windows if you like for the second
meeting. I believe most screen sharing services for web meetings are
inaccessible for the blind. Microsoft Lync now re-branded as Skype for Business
could work with PowerPoint and JAWS though I think I had to jigger things a bit
to have the slides automatically read.

The only alternative I can see is requesting any presentation materials in
advance.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

I remember that portable receiver as well. I will be curious if you try it. The
problem I see with this approach is that the actual GPS Mark, so to speak, is
often some ways away from the actual building you're trying to go to. It might
be in a parking lot for instance. Or so I have heard from the makers of nearby
explorer and Seeing Eye GPS. The folks who decide where exactly on the map or
whatever it is that GPS is keying on our more interested in cars getting to
where they're going and pedestrians

Specifically indoor navigation with support for several malls and

Sorry for the cross posting, but I thought this could be of interest to folks
on these lists who havei-devices. It looks like there are some improvements for
reading PDF documents on these devices, but no tables yet, unfortunately. Let's
hope it doesn't take them too long to get that implemented.

I did catch something on the keynote that I have heard nobody talk about.

Specifically indoor navigation with support for several malls and
airports. I highly expect Tysons Cornerr, a mall that is only two miles
from my house , to be a good candidate. Not only is the mall packed every
weekend and most evenings, it was also the site of the first Apple Retail
store. So I am hoping that the indoor navigation helps me verify if I have
passed Nordstroms or still have 200 feet to go.

Good ol Smith-Kettlewell, I remember building some of their projects when I was
in school. I will definitely check out this app.
The physical talking signs unit was very simple but effective. You
pointed a small IR receiver that converted the IR signal to speech and the
clearer the sound the more closely aligned to the correct direction you were.
They put transmitters over the tracks at the train station with the track
number for example or over the Subway sub shop sign directly over the door.

Re: How to use terminal?

Just for the less experienced on the list, terminal is just dropping you to a
unix shell. When you hear people talk about unix this is simply a flavor of it
that the pretty pictures part of Mac OS runs over. It’s an extremely powerful
environment and also a well paying career path if you learn the Unix based
operating systems.

Re: mac beta still coming soon was: Upgrading to IOS Public beta 11

2017-06-28 Thread Michael Marshall
I just wish apple would tell users what is going on.
Why can't they put a message on the beta site saying we are having problems
with APFS, just sit tight.
instead we have to rely on secondary sources.
It is the only bugbear I have with the apple beta setup.
I hope they fix this quickly.

How Apple is squeezing more photos into your iPhone

2017-06-28 Thread M. Taylor
FAQ: Apple's newest iPhone software attempts to move the world out of the
JPEG era. CNET decodes the technology

Apple will cram more photos into your iPhone. Here's how

Back in 1992, Bill Clinton was elected US president, Microsoft released
Windows 3.1 and digital photo experts created the JPEG image format. The
first two are mostly matters for historians now, but a quarter century
later, JPEG remains a part of our daily lives.

That's a remarkable achievement for the fast-moving computing industry.
Apple, though, thinks it's time to start moving on.

To that end, it announced this month at its WWDC programmer conference that
it's endowing its iPhones, iPads and Macs with support for a new
photo-storing technology called HEIF, short for High Efficiency Image
Format. HEIF needs only half the storage space as a JPEG photo of the same
quality. So surely adopting HEIF is a no-brainer?

Nope.

Compatibility problems and other factors complicate HEIF's prospects. But
Apple has massive clout in the computing industry. If it succeeds in pushing
HEIF into the mainstream, we stand to benefit -- not just from saving
storage space, but also from cooler animated photos, more powerful
image-editing possibilities and even fulfilled promises of augmented
reality.

To help you understand the issues, here's a look at HEIF.

Q: Why do I even need to worry about HEIF?
There's a good chance HEIF will barge into your life. Not only does it let
you squeeze more photos onto your phone, HEIF also modernizes digital
photography in important ways. Its future looks a lot brighter with Apple's
backing. It's the world's most profitable tech company, selling one of the
world's highest-profile phones and a lot of computers as well. Apple's
endorsement carries a lot of weight with app programmers, chip manufacturers
and the millions of people who use its products. Best to get a handle on
HEIF now.

Google Trends shows how interest in HEIF, shown in blue, surged when Apple
announced its support at WWDC. The red line shows the king of image formats,
JPEG, and the yellow line Google's competing WebP.

Q: Step back a sec. What is a photo file format again?
It's a standard way for computers to store and view pictures. With one, it
doesn't matter if you took a photo with an Android phone and then share it
with a college roommate with a Windows PC. JPEG, the king of photo formats,
has been around for decades, and every computing device out there
understands JPEG files. But HEIF is new, so most devices today have no idea
how to handle them. For those devices, encountering an HEIF file is like
when you visit a country where you don't speak the language.

Q: OK, but why do I care?
The biggest benefit is data compression. The original, high-quality version
of an image often can be shrunk so you can fit more on your phone and worry
less about blowing through your monthly network data cap when you share
them.

Photos using HEIF take up half the space as a JPEG, or alternatively offer
crisper, more detailed and colorful images at the same size. Nokia has some
good HEIF examples.

These cropped-in views of a larger image show how HEIF, left, offers richer
colors and fewer speckly artifacts near high-contrast borders compared to a
JPEG of about the same size.Enlarge Image

Nokia

"From a technological point of view, there is no doubt it is better than
JPEG," said Dror Gill, chief technology of image and video optimization
company Beamr. "You get the same quality with fewer bits."

Q: How does HEIF compression work?
HEIF uses video compression technology called HEVC (High Efficiency Video
Coding) that was designed by some of the best experts in the business -- the
Motion Picture Experts Group. If you watched streaming video on your TV,
phone or PC in the last day, chances are good it used their video
compression technology. HEIF is the technique to compress individual frames
that comprise an HEVC video.

Apple touted HEIF's space-saving benefits in big, bold type during WWDC.

Apple

HEIF uses some similar methods as JPEG, but goes a step further. JPEG breaks
an image up into blocks, each of which is compressed with a clever
combination of trigonometry and matrix mathematics whose details needn't
worry you. One way HEIF improves on JPEG is by comparing those blocks. If
one block is similar to another, HEIF records just the difference, which
requires less storage space. In effect, for example, HEIF could tell a
computer, "just put some blue sky

Re: mac os server

2017-06-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Simon,

There is likely a "Take Control of MacOS Sierra Server" eBook out there. The
Take Control series are usually quite good books. Other than that, there's
good stuff just on the Net. Just do a search on what service you wish to get
more detail on, along with MacOS Server in the search parameters and there's
lots of helpful material. I've mostly did all my Server stuff the second way
and I've got Leopard, Snow Leopard, El Capitan and Sierra servers all going
within our domain.

I’m finding a few things that may not necessarily be bugs but operate
 differently.

 1. The 4-finger swipe to change apps no longer works. It takes me to a
sign in screen and asks for my device password then kicks me back to the
home screen. This is frustrating as I use that gesture all the time. Yes,
 reporting this.

 2. The app Switcher has reversed the order of apps again, moving them
from most recent on the right to most recent on the left. The Home
designation is gone and I haven’t yet figured out how to get Hand off to
work, say to switch back after an accidental hand off occurs.

 3. Some screen sensitivity issues, either too sensitive or sluggish
depending on the app and task. I’m using a 6S.

 4. Voice Dream Reader can’t get books from the cloud. I was able to go
into the files app and share then copy a book to Voice Dream Reader
though so just a different way of doing things.

 5. getting used to the drag and drop feature took some time. I didn’t
realize you could grab multiple things, like apps, to drag and drop but
once I figured it out, I do like it.

 6. OK, call me weird but I like the new app store. I’ve had no issues
 updating or searching for apps.

Other than a few apps I’m beta testing on their own, apart from the iOS
beta, things seem to be working OK though.

Re: Disk Warrior

2017-06-28 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I used it five years ago or so. At that time there were two uses.

1. periodic monitoring of the disk. This just used Apple controls and I
seem to remember it being slightly accessible, but that some things
required some work to access.

The second use was when your disk was entirely messed up and you wanted to
try and correct the HFS structures. This required booting with a CD
(probably flash would have worked). It then scans your disk in several ways
to restore files that have lost their directory structure or other disk
forensics. This was completely inaccessible at the time, and I believe it
was essentially a mini system just dedicated to working on the disk drives.

Though I could n't read the procedures it was quite effective at getting a
3/4 dead disk up enough so that I could copy it to an external drive before
replacing the drive.

Re: Upgrading to IOS Public beta 11

2017-06-28 Thread Portia Scott
When you have apps in your app store that you have purchased, but not
installed onto your iPhone, do you see a download button when going to
install them?

Someone on Twitter was saying you have to install purchased apps that
you want on your iPhone from iTunes.

Re: mac beta still coming soon was: Upgrading to IOS Public beta 11

2017-06-28 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey guys. The reason why they haven't released a High Sierra public beta is
because according to sources, Apple is still having issues with the APFS
system. So rather than you guys getting stuck with it, they'd rather squash
those bugs before it gets released as a public beta.

Re: Upgrading to IOS Public beta 11

2017-06-28 Thread Jenine Stanley
I was moving the new Files app into a folder. Now if you do the 1-finger flick
down with actions selected in the rotor, instead of “Arrange Apps” it will say
“Edit Mode”.

If you double tap on this, you will find an action called Drag and Drop where
it used to say Move App.

Double tapping on Drag and Drop will pause your screen for a second. Treat this
just as you would the iOS10 move command. Go to the folder you want or
location, flick down and you will see an action to drop the item into that
folder.

Sorry, I feel like I’m missing a step here but once in the folder I believe you
have to confirm the drop spot with another 1-finger flick. give it some time as
it’s not as clean yet as the iOS10 app moving.

How to control playback speed in VLC

2017-06-28 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I recall a recent discussion on how to slowdown playback. VLC seemed to be the
answer so I have been trying that as my first use of VLC. While the track of
interest is playing I can get to the playback menu where I can find a slider
with options for slower and faster. If I interact with the slider I can make
the playback faster but how to I undo that and make the playback slower than
the normal speed?
I recall a reply mentioning Alt+arrow keys as a way to control playback speed.
Is that something I have to set up in preferences?
Many thanks.

Anders, have you hear d the new swedish siri voice? I thought it was quite
nice. Wonder if you can only use it with Siri.
One bug i noticed in earlier iOs versions has apparently been fixed, you can

I think there will always be a limited amount of swedish voices. There are

Pages shortcut

2017-06-28 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn

You should be able to make any menu item a keyboard shortcut, if you need to.
This has been discussed on the list before. Also, please don't just reply to a
message especially if you don't change the subject.
You need to modify application shortcuts in the keyboard panel of System
Preferences.

Re: file volt weirdness

2017-06-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I believe that you are correct, in that it is a hardware difference. I have an
MBP Late 2011 and I only enabled File Vault a couple of months ago. So, you'd
expect it to be the newest version of File Vault. My machine only does the
single beep when I attempt to turn VO on, double beep after the username has
been entered and a triple beep after everything's done correctly and it's ready
to go.

weirdness with iPhone wake-up screen?

Hi all,

So I woke up this morning to find that the wake-up screen on my iPhone contains
all kinds of junk that wasn't there before. Has anyone else experienced this?
Anyone know if there's a way to change it back? I liked it better the other
way. :)

Re: Upgrading to IOS Public beta 11

2017-06-28 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,
I am having trouble with pages.

There is supposed to be a keyboard shortcut, command enter, which makes a page
break. when I hit this, my mac makes a bonking noise, and I am unable to
perform the keyboard shortcut. If I go to the insert section on the menu bar,
and choose insert page break, then it works.

Is there any fix for this?? I’d love to be able to use this keyboard shortcut
versus going through the menu bar..

thanks!
Caitlyn

Re: Upgrading to IOS Public beta 11

2017-06-28 Thread Jenine Stanley
I’m finding a few things that may not necessarily be bugs but operate
differently.

1. The 4-finger swipe to change apps no longer works. It takes me to a sign in
screen and asks for my device password then kicks me back to the home screen.
This is frustrating as I use that gesture all the time. Yes, reporting this.

2. The app Switcher has reversed the order of apps again, moving them from most
recent on the right to most recent on the left. The Home designation is gone
and I haven’t yet figured out how to get Hand off to work, say to switch back
after an accidental hand off occurs.

3. Some screen sensitivity issues, either too sensitive or sluggish depending
on the app and task. I’m using a 6S.

4. Voice Dream Reader can’t get books from the cloud. I was able to go into the
files app and share then copy a book to Voice Dream Reader though so just a
different way of doing things.

5. getting used to the drag and drop feature took some time. I didn’t realize
you could grab multiple things, like apps, to drag and drop but once I figured
it out, I do like it.

6. OK, call me weird but I like the new app store. I’ve had no issues updating
or searching for apps.

Other than a few apps I’m beta testing on their own, apart from the iOS beta,
things seem to be working OK though.

here are some bugs I have found. I'm not noticing my touch screen on
my 6S behaving any differently.
1. The messages rotor option has disappeared from mail. There is an
actions rotor option, but no effective way to jump between messages.
2. When editing using a braille display, the cursor jumps around erradically.
3. In the weather app, the 24 hour forecast does not display the hour.
E.G. 8 PM, sunny, 77 degrees. The hour of that forecasted weather
condition and tempature is not read by VO.
4. When typing using a braille display, for some reason, text
shortcuts appear not to be functioning. It works fine using the

Sound Forge 3 with VO

2017-06-28 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hello,

is anyone working with the new updated Sound Forge 3 with VO? My impressions
are:
• no real new features
• if I press Space or Enter to play or pause it takes round about 3 seconds to
complete the action

Can anyone confirm this or is it just on my machine?

Thanks
Jürgen

Re: VoiceDream Writer

2017-06-28 Thread Phil Halton
You have to give Ryder access to your dropbox account. Do it in the following
way. One, select Add document.
Two, select import from external location.
Three. Select the "more" option.
Under the more options you will find manage locations. Tap the "dropbox" switch
and it should activate the dropbox account. You might have to login and or go
through a confirmation screen. Then you can save two and import from your
dropbox folder.

Could this be what you need to do?

• bullet If you're using FileVault in Mac OS X Snow Leopard, you can upgrade to
FileVault 2 by upgrading to OS X Lion or later. After upgrading OS X, open

Re: Problem selecting dates in diary online with Voiceover in Safari

2017-06-28 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hard to tell without personally playing with the site. I often do find that as
long as I am in the main navigation area of the screen, using either find,
VoiceOver find or item chooser will help with sites. First thing to discover
is if there is a lot of hiding and unhiding of the some HTML content based on
location of mouse / touch gestures.

One thing to be aware of, is that if the site makes use of frames, these
usually need a separate set of interaction to determine what is inside.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: How to use terminal?

2017-06-28 Thread -dan d.

The say command alone plus a word will be spoken using the voice one uses
in vo.Using the -v with a voice name uses that voice.

If more then one word enclose them in quoatation marks.

Using -f plus the name of a text file will speak the contents of the file.
The -v plus voice works if desired here too.

There are afew other options also, including voice rate and creating an
audio file of the spoken text.

okay, I had success! And now, for even more of a kick, does anyone know how to
make it say just anything you want to print command?

Fun stuff,

file volt weirdness

2017-06-28 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Listers,

A few weeks ago we had a discussion on file volt not speaking at the log in
prompt or vise versa

I've just put sierra on to a mac mini I've obtained from work,

I thought I'd secure things more with file volt and low and behold it only
beeps when trying to log in, or at least it did before I locked myself out.

Now what I find weird about this is that on my mac book air I have sierra
installed and file volt enabled yet vo will speak if I command f5 at the prompt
I log in and am away and racing.

My mac book air is a mid 2013 july MBA and the mac mini is a late 2010 device,

I'm just wondering if this difference in file volt behaviour is due to hardware
differences

But I thought it was interesting that one machine works one way and the other
machine another way.

Cheers,

Simon F

Problem selecting dates in diary online with Voiceover in Safari

2017-06-28 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

Here is my problem: I need to book slots for online lessons in a tutor's diary.
The dates and the times are not reported by VoiceOver as links or any
clickable elements, and yet a sighted person can select them using the mouse.
I've tried every trick I've learnt for the 10 years of using Voiceover but it
is still unreliable. Sometimes I manage to select what I want but most often I
can't and the amount of time I spend on this simple task is just impossible to
justify. I've tried Chrome on the mac side and sAfari, I've tried Chrome,
Firefox, and Internet Explorer on Windows in virtual machine with jaws but to
no avail. Can anyone suggest something, or is it plain impossible and
therefore I will have to rely on sighted help for this?

Many thanks

Andrew

RE: apple configurater / MDM

2017-06-28 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Tim,

Thanks for that, yes configurator 2 is the current one I guess an update /
beter version

Yes I have approx. 10 iPhone 4 / 4s devices that I want to lock down so that if
someone uses one they can’t add in their own apple ID and forget to unlock it
from that id before giving it back which we’ve had happen in the passed couple
of weeks.

A pain in the ass if you have to contact someone at the other end of the
country to unlock a phone to be able to reset it.

Thanks for any further info if you have any.

Simon,

I use Apple Configurator often and it is very accessible. I'm more used to the
original Configurator as opposed to Configurator 2, but have played a little
with 2. Configurator 2 is actually much better, but I just haven't had the
time to work with it much. I will be doing so over the next few months though
as I need to take control of a bunch of iPads that need updating and are still
connected to the original Configurator. If you're just doing minor stuff like
you mentioned, there's no real need to go all out on an MDM, Configurator 2 and
maybe OS X Server should be fine.

I’d prefer apple configurater simply becase it’s free and hopefully easy to use.

But would like to know of any other systems people might be using currently.

I have a number of iPhone 4 and 4s devices I need to lock down so people can’t
go changing settings on them.
Thanks for any info you may have.
