How GPS Apps Work

2017-08-31 Thread Todor Fassl
The global positioning system, invented a couple of decades ago, works
by having a bunch of satellites circling the earth broadcasting the
time. Just the time. Because radio signals travel at the speed of light,
which is not infinite, your GPS receiver can tell from how late the
signals are how far away the satellites are. If it has at least 3
signals, it can figure out exactly where you are in space. If it has a
data connection, it can then query a map database to find out where you
are on the Earth. If it doesn't have a data connection but it does have
map data, either because it is cached or because you deliberately
uploaded it to your phone, it can still figure out where you are.

The system can break down in 2 basic ways:

1. No signal from GPS satellites. GPS signals are available all over the
globe. Most of the satellites are in geosyncronous orbit around the
equator but enough of them are not so you can still get a GPS signal at
the poles. However, the radio signals from the satellites is very weak
and you might not even be able to pick it up in a mobile home. In a
parking garage, probably not

2. No map data. If your location is not in a mpa database, if you don't
have access to a map database, or if the map data is wrong, your phone
won't know where you are. It should still be able to give you GPS
coordinates but that won't help most people most of the time.

Note: I have talked only about GPS systems. Your phone can also
triangulate it's position from cell phone towers and even wifi signals.
Google has made a map of as many of the wifi signals it can in the
world. So if you called the wifi in your house "blindGuysAreSexy", it
might be able to tell someone where they are based on that alone.

RE: Using my iPhone on a camping trip

2017-08-31 Thread David & his pack of dogs
Your comment begs the question, what to you is camping? Of course, you don't
have to answer. I just get a kick out of those who say they love camping then
find out their perception of camping is staying in a cottage. Our handyman
told us his girlfriend at the time said she loved camping. After they got
married he found out her idea was living in an R V, his was tenting and cooking
on an open fire. The next girlfriend, her idea of a vacation was living in a
gated community. His comment, "Why not just go to prison, then."

I did specify in my original message that I was going rock climbing.
That would imply that I am leaving the RV.

Lets start over ... Has anyone gone tent camping in a state or national
park and found a use for their iphone that they would like to pass
along? Forget I ever mentioned that I have a guide dog. Actual
experienced campers only, please.

RE: Using my iphone on a camping trip

2017-08-31 Thread David & his pack of dogs
The one thing I've learned over the years is. The term camping is subjective
at best. To some, taking a R V to a national park or private campground, is
camping where they never leave the RV accept to go into the local pub or
restaurant to eat, with others, they don't leave the cottage. Then there are
those who hike into a clearing in the woods and set up a carry-in tent. Some
camp for 2 days, others for 2 weeks. Others live on hot dogs, chips and beer,
leave their garbage and call that camping. It is all subjective.

I will bet my house you have never been on a camping trip with a guide dog. I
didn't ask for help with my guide dog. I have an excellent guide dog and way
above average OEM skills. I'm very active in the blind community and with guide
dog users in particular and I know this for to be a fact. There isn't a guide
dog on this planet that isn't going to have trouble in the woods. There are a
million distractions and no clear paths. If you are going to tell me you have
taken your guide dog on camping trips and he performed flawlessly, I am going
to call you a liar. On top of all that, I didn't ask for help with my f'in
guide dog.

PS: You still owe me an apology from the lst time you and I tangled.

Re: Using my iphone on a camping trip

2017-08-31 Thread Todor Fassl
Technically, Joseph, you are wrong. The phone will still pick up a GPS
location. It just won't know where that location is on a map. Most GPS
apps get live map data via your data link. But there is an app called
Navigon that allows you to download map data in advance. [Note to self,
make sure the map for Illinois in on your phone before leaving.]

Scott I'm pretty sure, you're going to have something to say about this. But I
hate to burst your bubble. Tim's information is correct to an extent. However
yours is completely wrong. If you have no service whatsoever on your device,
the phone, will not pick up a GPS location. I have recently tried this. When
I've had absolutely no service. The only way it works, when you have no
service. As if you have previously loaded your route, before you lost service.
So I hope this clarifies things.

Even with out service enabled the GPS chip is functional and also pulls

data cached locally if you don’t have an active account. WiFi is not required

Re: Using my iphone on a camping trip

2017-08-31 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

consider this folks. In the Spring of 2016, my son was in Italy. To save
money, Data Roaming and cell service were turned off. No WiFi either.
Probably in Airplane mode as well to make sure he wasn't accidentally charged
for data or anything at international rates. He downloaded a map through
Google Maps on his phone when he was in the hostel the night before. While on
the bus, with his phone turned on, but no network connectivity of any sort as
mentioned earlier, he could watch a little dot of him traveling along the roads
on this downloaded map. So, the GPS is running and keeping track of your
location, the compass is active, but without pre-loading a map, no directions
are possible.

People need to consider the difference in semantics. Just because the GPS and
compass are active, no route mapping is possible, no location services are
possible, unless you have an off-line or downloaded map that is related to a
specific navigational mapping or routing service like Google.

Later...

Hey Scott,
If your out in the forest to climb rocks and such, I think you should not
depend on reception thats why I suggested a tactile compass to get you pointed
in the correct direction and once your guide dog recognizes the "latrine" or
starting point for the climb he'll guide you to it!!! :) A "satellite phone"
may be a solution also but if you want to un plug go all the way.

Re: Using my iphone on a camping trip

2017-08-31 Thread David Chittenden
Actually, Joseph, it depends on the app. Some apps, such as Navigon, store all
the maps on the phone. For these apps, the only thing needed is GPS signal.
Unfortunately, only one app which stores local map data on the phone is free.
All the others charge a decent amount. And, there is the situation of
accessibility.

Direct access to the sky is not always enough. Direct access to the sky where
the GPS satelites are is always enough, when one has the map data.

The situation described, where cell tower access is required means the phone
requires a data signal to receive map positional information. Oh, I believe the
information is called GIS, or Geographic Information System.

Kind regards,

Scott, first of all I don't smoke crack and three this is not the time for
sarcasm. And furthermore, I was not talking about account status. I was talking
about, when the phone itself completely has no service as to where you are
located. So I know I'm fully correct as I have tried this on T-Mobile's
network. I will not allow you to bash me here

I guess you can’t read so we can stop here but for the literate among us
continue on. As mentioned, these applications were requiring data and didn’t
cache their maps. Google maps would have worked just fine as will GPS in a
mountainous setting as long as you have good visibility of the sky which you
should outside away from buildings. You’d also be surprised how much coverage
there is in rural mountainous areas now. You can even get a cell signal on
Everest.
Other apps that cache their data are Navigon and I’m not sure about the
seeing eye package from Sendero. I know they used to be heavy on mapping and
local storage but not sure if that philosophy remains. Might be worth a trip to
sender’s site or google for more background on the specific app. The afore
mentioned google maps is also a winner of an option. None of these replace
good O&M skills though.

Re: Using my iphone on a camping trip

2017-08-31 Thread Scott Granados
Tim, well said, much better than I but we’re on exactly the same page. Well
played sir.:)

Related to this, I have a long time friend who used a GPS system to project a
dot in space that he trained his guide dog to follow. As the directions in the
route changed the dot would move relative to the dog’s vision in the direction
he wanted the dog to turn. He was able to build more accurate maps I think by
augmenting the GPS / tower signal with the local compass and gyro and have the
dog basically run on a sort of auto pilot.

You’re points about accuracy are very solid. One other potential issue is
depending if static navigation is set you might need tome at more than 5 MPH to
get an accurate detection of your movement and direction. This is because most
of these systems are built for use in cars so require a minimum amount of
movement so you’re not constantly recalculating your position based on signal
reflections and atmospherics. The iPhone should be fine in this area. You
also get signal augmentation and the interpolation between the two navigation
standards to help deal with the inaccuracy a bit. Also the 5S is an old phone,
it may be a bit less feature packed than the current model but it should give
you general information which others have mentioned should be combined with
good mobility skills. Won’t help this camping trip but the new standards will
support down to a half meter accuracy instead of 3 to 9 or more so this will
also help. If we could only decrypt the military signal we’d have this
capability today but somehow they won’t let blind travelers use the same GPS
signals as they use to steer missiles.

If your out in the forest to climb rocks and such, I think you should not

Re: Using my iphone on a camping trip

2017-08-31 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

the distinction to be noted here, is that getting directions via a mapping app
like Apple Maps or Google Maps, vs GPS locations and compass directionality.
As mentioned, both the GPS and the compass do not require WiFi nor cell tower
connectivity but if you wish to use them to follow a route map, then you either
need that connectivity or you need to use something like Google Maps that can
cache locally specific maps for off-line use. Again, these are not always
perfect for situations like camping and such as both the exact accuracy and the
route is not mapped within these apps. What I mean by accuracy is that if
you're supposed to walk 50 m west along the road or path, then turn north or
right onto a path that takes you to the outhouse, the GPS cannot pin-point the
exact 50 metre location. That's where either your dog or marking locations
along the way would come in useful. That is, if you marked the spot where you
need to turn off the road, while using an off-line mapping feature, then you
should get some sort of notification when you get close to the path and you
could start the request for your dog to find the path. The best thing though
in my opinion is to do this a few times with sighted assistance letting your
dog know that this is how to get to the outhouse. With this reinforcement and
routine, your dog should be able to handle it in the middle of the night just
fine, unless there's a major distraction like a bear or coyote.

Later...

Re: Using my iphone on a camping trip

2017-08-31 Thread Scott Granados
Joseph, put down the craack pipe, that’s wrong.

I received GPS signal with no service this morning on the way in to work when I
was between the HSPA and LTE transition. So you can always pull GPS data, this
is independent of network access. Your phone can decode both GPs and Glanass
signals natively with out network support.
Where you’re partly correct if you bothered reading was if you’re
working with software that doesn’t cache data. Apple Maps in many cases or
other tools need network access to pull down the map data that you relate the
GPS signal against. This is not the case for all applications. Some download
a separate set of maps that does not require network access to read, you store
them locally for conditions where data can’t be pulled down.
Further more, if you have service your able to use both positioning
standards + tower location augmentation. This will yield the best results. If
what you said was true though phones would lose their way in tunnels or in big
cities with multi path and in the tunnel case especially I can confirm daily
that network access is not required if you use the correct applications.

(Not to mention I tested this for carriers. Also if you said was true E911
would not work on phones that aren’t activated and in fact it does, it’s an FCC
requirement that all phones regardless of payment or account status be able to
dial 911 and report it’s location.

Nice try though.

Well I needed directions to new doctor. With no wyfy or cell signal it told me
not abled to complete request. The phone was totally useless. I had to wait
until almost on top of town where cell signal came up and GPS found my
directions.
My nephew on his android phone with no cell connection worked better with GPS
then mine did.
Now out on lake James in North Carolina it was totally useless for any
directions. No phone gets signal or wyfy on that lake.
I have to use my own cell tower just to get signal out my house.
So if your near major cities you will have signal for all.

Even with out service enabled the GPS chip is functional and also pulls
location data from the network. You have to have cell signal for the tower

So unlike the other speeches for responses I’ll actually answer your question.

Seeing Eye GPS has the ability to set points of interest. That might be a good
way to go so you can mark specific areas you’re interested in.
Next, there’s an accessible compass built in, you might try that option
to get basic direction.
Around me is a free application that tells you what’s located around
you.
Apple Maps is also pretty feature packed but I think the ability to set
POIs would be what you’re looking for.

Re: Looking for a Spanish/English dictionary app for my iPhone

2017-08-31 Thread Phil Halton
Do a three finger swipe to the right on your home screen in order to get to the
search screen. Then type in Spanish Dict and it should show you the app and
under which folder it is currently stored. Then you can go there and move it
out of the folder or wherever it is and place it where you like again.

only way I can now use the app is to go into the App Store, enter its name in
the Search field and then click on ‚Open.‘ If anybody knows of a way that I
can recover the app so that I can put it in its proper folder, I’d be grateful.

Best to all of you with loads of gratitude,

Mike

Re: Looking for a Spanish/English dictionary app for my iPhone

I have been using an app for many years now called Spanish Dict, note the
spelling as D I C T. In the App Store you will find it as Spanish translator
and dictionary by curiosity media it has five stars and I find it very
thorough. It gives complete and accessible conjugations and dictionary
references with context. It also gives audio pronunciations for words along
with other features. Sent from my IPhone

Getting Radio Streams Recognized in iTunes

2017-08-31 Thread Bill Gallik
On my iPhone, using ooTunes, it was relatively simple to search for various
streaming radio stations and add them to your favorites.

How does one do this with iTunes on a Mac OS system?

I enjoy listening to “old time radio” and have found several sites that provide
this genre and would like to include that list from my iPhone in iTunes on my
Mac mini. I would appreciate any tips anybody on this list might offer.

Hello, Sarai,

Thank you for getting back to me. I just checked the company out in the App
store, and it would appear that they would have what I need. I am wondering if
they really give you verb conjugations.

Have you yourself ever evaluated any of their dictionaries for accessibility?
The in-app purchases are a little pricy, but if they are accessible and have
verb conjugations, then they are well worth it.

Thanks so much, Sarai,
