Hi,

Yes, I do lots via the Terminal as well, but Simon was mentioning that he
wasn't comfortable working in the Terminal, hence, alternative GUI methods.

It's Official: Mark is on iPhone 8 Plus (smile)

2017-11-09 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

Well, I was in an Apple Store today just browsing around when I decided to
go ahead and make the plunge and get a new phone.

While I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with iPhone 10, believe it or not, I
do not like its smaller form factor nor, as a low vision user, its display
aspect-ratio in terms of watching videos. To me, it's just too narrow.
Again, this is just my opinion and my opinion, only.

As for my take on Face ID? Hmm! Well, the thrill of it wore off pretty
fast on me (smile).

While I have no doubt but that Face ID is here to stay, as well it should, I
decided to go with a SIM-free, space gray, 256GB iPhone 8 Plus.

I was surprised to learn that the SIM-free models of the iPHone 8 series
launched in the US at the same time as the carrier-branded models. It used
to be that the SIM-free models were launched no sooner than two months after
the carrier-branded models.

I was told by an Apple Genius, today, that the SIM-free model of iPhone 10
is not yet available in the US.

Just as an F.Y.I., in the USA, only the SIM-free models ship with a SIM card
removal tool. I have always thought this to be a ridiculous practice of
Apple for, carrier-branded or not, one may choose to remove the SIM card at
some point in the future. Besides, for the amount of money one pays for
iPhone, I think Apple should include the SIM card removal tool, along with a
three-course meal, for that matter. (smile)

I also purchased Apple Care Plus along with my prerequisite screen
protector.

I was delighted to discover that the 8 plus fits in the same case as my 6
plus so no added expense, there.

I updated my Windows iTunes 12.6 to 12.6.3 and it's running beautifully.

As I did not update my iPhone 6 Plus to iOS 11.x, I will make a full backup
to iTunes and restore to the new phone later this weekend.

Okay, I know that's more information than you wanted but, what can I say?
I'm feeling chatty (smile).

Until Next Time,

Mark

2017-11-09 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Simon,

If they both get upgraded to High Sierra, then you'd still be fine. With
respect to the VPN, if you have DNS set up on the Sierra server, then enable
Open Directory on the Sierra server. Once OD is enabled, create a network user
with "Services Only" privileges. Use this network user as the user to connect
to the VPN. I've found that local user credentials don't work well with the
VPN initial access. The DNS on the server should point to itself as well as
your router. As long as the server can access the internet, then anything
connected through its VPN service can do so as well.

With respect to ARD, sorry, no joy there either. VO will not pass through the
sound. You can control VO as long as VO is off on your machine, but you won't
hear anything unless you're sitting right beside it. For connecting to the
server, you could connect via AFP or smb through the VPN and have access to
most things you'd need access to.

That's how I handle it anyway. Well, that and Terminal.

Simon,

If you're MacBook is running the same MacOS as the Server, and all you're
wanting to do is manage the Server settings, then you don't need to do anything
special Just install the Server app onto your MacBook, open it, press cmd-n
to open a new connection, select Other from the table, then enter the IP of
your router. You will have first needed to set up a forwarder that will
forward requests that come to the router for Server Admin tasks to be forwarded
to your Server internal IP. With all that set up, you can manage the server
using the app on a different Mac. The limitations happen when you're using a
different version of the Server app on each machine these won't properly talk
to each other. I just have a drive with multiple MacOS's on it with multiple
versions of Server app. So, when I want to manage an el Capitan server
installation, I use the 10.11.6 installation and so on for Sierra etc.

Hi,

I don't use QuickNav much, if at all, and still find similar frustrations as
Christine, albeit, not to the same degree. I've found that VO jumps to the
beginning sometimes when I stop to think between typing. the best thing I've
found is to just not use VO navigation when composing eMails, that is, just
arrow navigation. Option-right/left navigates word by word, up/down goes line
by line and right/left goes character by character. Works for now.

RE: Recommendation for a Bluetooth keyboard to pair with my iPhone

Hi Erik,

Yeah very interesting,
I would be surprised if you couldn’t get one, I thought I saw something say
they would ship to me in NZ so I’d be surprised if not to Canada
But hey you never know.

I don't have this keyboard myself, only because I can't buy from
amazon.com anymore. I'm not sure why most of us need to iOS
devices. One is enough for me. Regardless, I have been interested in how this
keyboard determines its pairings. As far as I'm concerned, Bluetooth is
Bluetooth is Bluetooth. If you were going to go to the trouble to make a 3 in 1
Bluetooth connection for a keyboard, you wouldn't restricted by device would
you? I've also wondered what would happen if you tried to pair the keyboard up
with a Mac. The spec is very specific that it's Windows, IOS, and Android.
There's no reason why it shouldn't connect up to a Mac just fine, but what
would actually happen if you tried it?

I actually have one of each, iOS, Android, and Windows devices. So, this is
actually the perfect keyboard for me. If anyone is planning to buy, I would be
interested in PayPal and someone the money, getting them to order me one, and
ship it to Canada.

Simon,
Black Friday is a marketing gimmick to get people to part with their
money. If you have done accounting, black indicates positive dollar amounts,
red means negative. So the storee are in the black and the shippers are in the
red meaning they went over budget and maxxed out their credit cards.

RE: mac os server and remote desk top

2017-11-09 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Tim,

Yeah one Idea and yes the two devices are currently both running sierra but
that will get updated soonish.

I would prefer to be able to also access files / folder structures as well as
server features, but from an off site location through my vpn which is being
bloody difficult with setup and I can’t see which part is the issue.

I was wondering about ARD apple Remote Desktop on the server and if using that
to connect to the client will give me vo through the connection
Terminal isn’t currently an option as my linux skills are sadly not great.

I’ll keep playing and see what I can do .

Cheers.

I'm not E.T. but try these.

* Navigate to the word in question, or filename, or whatever it is, and press
vo-w twice quickly to spell what's under the VO cursor.
* Navigate to what you want to spell, interact with it, and use vo-shift-right
(add the cmd key on macOS 10.13 and later) to move by character.
* Use vo-cmd-right to get to characters, then vo-cmd-down to move by character.
This requires 10.13 or later.
* Get VO to say what you want spelled, hit vo-shift-c to copy the words, then
paste them somewhere you can review them, like a text file or Pages document.

Simon,
Black Friday is a marketing gimmick to get people to part with their money.
If you have done accounting, black indicates positive dollar amounts, red means
negative. So the storee are in the black and the shippers are in the red
meaning they went over budget and maxxed out their credit cards.

Re: What on earth did I do??? Mail is driving me crazy

2017-11-09 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Not sure why it would have deleted the entire line unless the line of text was
highlighted. Normally, on a Mac, when moving from left to right, the cursor
will land just to the right, or after, the last item read. Therefore, if you
pressed the delete key, it would delete the last letter of the last word read.
The problem happens now, if you are just using arrow navigation, then this rule
does not always work. It seems that when using arrow navigation, the cursor
location within the line is remembered, thus just listening to what VO read
doesn't necessarily work. What I've done for now, is use arrow keys until I
get close then use option-arrow to go word by word. This lets the cursor
behaviour work the same as what I'm accustomed to. Someone else may have
something to contribute here, but that's my work around for now. I'd rather
have not needed to work around anything, but I'd like a lot of things that
don't happen.

RE: What on earth did I do??? Mail is driving me crazy

2017-11-09 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Christine,

Not that this will help you now but, this problem has been well documented with
Apple developers.

Based on my experience with reporting Mail bugs, it can take up to an entire
release version in order to resolve these kinds of things. I'm not saying it
will take to next year for this to be fixed but, based only on my personal
experience, I wouldn't expect a fix until 10.14 or Mac OS 11.

This is one of the reasons why I have not updated to High Sierra on my primary
Mac Partition.

I absolutely cannot edit in email, though I can edit fine in Text Edit or
Pages. The cursor is never where it is supposed to be. I try to backspace or
fix a typo, and I am never where I wish to be. Even if I interact and VoiceOver
reads word by word, I am never on, or even before or after, the word being
spoken. This is phenomenally frustrating, as I am constantly deleting the
entire contents, writing emails elsewhere, thencutting and pasting. One think
of note that might be relevant is that when I erase the entire contents, and am
in the edit field, VoiceOver says “Empty Group” which I have never heard before
in this context.

Hello all. I’ve been burned by purchasing what were supposed to be high-quality

Re: What on earth did I do??? Mail is driving me crazy

2017-11-09 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

No, it's not natural for me either. I often still revert back to VO navigation
within the composing area and mess things up. This arrow navigation is the
best I can do for now. I'm not sure if this is going to be modified, or if
this is the new way. I've heard that there are some fixes coming to Mail
navigation, but I'm not exactly sure what aspects of the experience they
pertain to.

Navigating headings in Pages

Re: What on earth did I do??? Mail is driving me crazy

2017-11-09 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,
When reading emails, try interacting with the message area, then arrow down
through the message text to read it. Don't use the VO keys, just the arrow
keys. If you need to go word by word, hold down the option key while pressing
the right arrow, or left arrow to go back. Use just the right arrow to go
forward letter by letter. I agree that navigation within Mail is less than
expected in High Sierra as compared to previous versions of the MacOS.
Hopefully, it is fixed in some fashion soon.

Re: Recommendation for a Bluetooth keyboard to pair with my iPhone

2017-11-09 Thread Erik Burggraaf
I don't have this keyboard myself, only because I can't buy from amazon.com
anymore. I'm not sure why most of us need to iOS devices. One is enough
for me. Regardless, I have been interested in how this keyboard determines
its pairings. As far as I'm concerned, Bluetooth is Bluetooth is Bluetooth.
If you were going to go to the trouble to make a 3 in 1 Bluetooth
connection for a keyboard, you wouldn't restricted by device would you?
I've also wondered what would happen if you tried to pair the keyboard up
with a Mac. The spec is very specific that it's Windows, IOS, and Android.
There's no reason why it shouldn't connect up to a Mac just fine, but what
would actually happen if you tried it?

I actually have one of each, iOS, Android, and Windows devices. So, this is
actually the perfect keyboard for me. If anyone is planning to buy, I would
be interested in PayPal and someone the money, getting them to order me
one, and ship it to Canada.
