2017-11-17 Thread sandi sørensen
Hi,i have a more thanusual hard time following this one, let me by all means
explain.
Have i think at the time of writing ,iPhone IPad, and god may know how many
computers, okay, lets be realistic 10, all signed in to the same Apple ID.
Of course the first time I signed in with a new device, i got a notice across
all the other ones signed in, telling me that my Apple ID was being used, and
on which model.
That only happened once however.
So either you have a lot of toys, and in that case you should consider your
self blessed, or you have another setting than i do.
All of this confusion could also do to me being more airheaded or blonder than
usual :d i kinda doubt the last part though,

How to Force Restart iPhone X

2017-11-17 Thread M. Taylor
OS X Daily - Friday, November 17, 2017 at 11:41 AM
How to Force Restart iPhone X

If you need to force restart an iPhone X you will need to learn a new method,
because Apple has changed how you force reboot iPhone X compared to prior
iPhone models. This is partially because the iPhone X no longer has a Home
button, so the longstanding method of forced rebooting is no longer possible
with iPhone X.
Now with iPhone X, you will force restart the device by using a series of
button presses instead. This tutorial will detail exactly how you can initiate
a forced restart, sometimes called a hard reboot, of iPhone X.

The sequence is a little strange at first mostly because it’s different,
breaking the habit you may have developed with force rebooting earlier iOS
devices, but once you get the hang of it you will be able to force restart
iPhone X almost as quickly as you could earlier devices. You’ll also need to be
sure you press the buttons in the proper order as described, otherwise the
iPhone X will not force restart.
How to Force Reboot iPhone X
You must press the buttons in sequential order for iPhone X to force restart,
the first two buttons are pressed and then released, and the final button is
held until the force reboot occurs. Here’s how it works:
1. Press Volume Up, then release
2. Press Volume Down, then release
3. Press and hold the Power / Lock button on the right side of iPhone X
4. Continue to hold the Power / Lock / Side button until the  Apple logo
appears on screen of iPhone X

It may feel like it takes a while to see the  Apple logo appear on screen, but
once you do see it you will know you have successfully forced the iPhone X to
restart.
Remember, you must follow the proper order of pressing the buttons to force
reboot iPhone X, if it fails then just start over and try again.
If you try and press the buttons concurrently you’ll likely either take a
screenshot on iPhone X or initiate the Emergency Calling feature, neither of
which you are likely trying to do if you simply want to force the iPhone to
restart. The proper way is: Up, Down, hold Power.
This is yet another evolving change in the iOS world, but it turns out that
force restarting iPhone X with the new button sequence is actually also how you
force reboot an iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, though it is different from force
restarting iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, which is also different from forcibly
rebooting iPhone 6s, 6, 5, 4, and iPad models with clickable Home buttons. With
the steps changing on several occasions, perhaps we’ll see another change with
forced restarts on iOS devices down the road, time will tell.

Oh and by the way, you can also preform a regular reboot of iPhone X by simply
turning it off and back on again. You can do that with the Power/Volume button
press, or with the method that works on all modern iOS versions by turning off
the iPhone or iPad via Settings, without using the Power button and then simply
turning it back on again.

iPhone X: How to not accidentally call 911

2017-11-17 Thread M. Taylor

iPhone X: How to not accidentally call 911

Have you accidentally started to call 911 with your iPhone X? I have.
Whether you’re just wondering how the feature works or want to make you
don’t make an emergency call by mistake (again), follow along.

The iPhone X has a lot of great new features, and along with them are new
ways to navigate with gestures and other changes with the Home button-less
device.
One particular change that many need to adjust to are the new ways you can
use the side button (previously sleep/wake button). Because of the various
functions of pressing the side button and the volume buttons and the larger
size of the side button, it can be easy to accidentally call 911.
How to not accidentally call 911
The default setting for iPhone X and iPhone 8/8 Plus with iOS 11 has the
‘Auto Call’ for Emergency SOS turned on. This means that if you hold down
the side button and either of the volume buttons and continue holding, the
911 call will be placed automatically.
The way I’ve accidentally done this has been when I’m trying to lower the
volume on my X, but am also unintentionally also pressing the side button as
well. So, the first option is to just get used to the larger side button
make sure to avoid hitting it when changing the volume.
Fortunately, the default Countdown Sound that is turned on is so loud that
you’ll get a couple of seconds to let go of the buttons (or tap cancel)
before placing the call.
The other option to avoid accidentally calling 911 is to turn off the Auto
Call feature. To do this head to Settings → Emergency SOS → Auto Call.

Turning this feature off still lets you make an SOS call, but after you
invoke the Emergency SOS screen (by pressing and holding the side button and
a volume button), you’ll have to manually slide to SOS slider to place the
call. The Auto Call feature is also independent of the option to rapidly
clicking the side button 5 times for a 911 call, which can be turned off in
the same settings as well.
You’ll also notice that once you enter the Emergency SOS screen, you’ll
have to use your passcode to unlock your iPhone, another security feature
that came along with iOS 11.
Apple notes in a support document for the iPhone 7 and earlier, the Auto
Call option isn’t available, so pressing the side button 5 times and then
sliding is the way to make an SOS call.

iPhone X vs. 8 Plus vs. 8: Choose the best iPhone for you - CNET

2017-11-17 Thread M. Taylor
CNET News - Friday, November 17, 2017 at 11:08 AM
iPhone X vs. 8 Plus vs. 8: Choose the best iPhone for you - CNET

Now Playing: Watch this: iPhone 8, 8 Plus or X: Which should you get?
3:42
Picking an iPhone used to be dead simple: just get the new one. But, in
2017, Apple has three new iPhones: a basic iPhone 8, an upgraded 8 Plus, and
a fancy iPhone X.
That's not even counting all the other iPhones Apple still sells, too: the
iPhone SE, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, and the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. That's
eight models in total -- it's almost too much.
Blow the dust away, and you have three clear iPhone paths to head down: for
premium, the iPhone X or iPhone 8 Plus; for mainstream, the iPhone 8; and
for a budget choice, the iPhone SE.

Sometimes (like with some videos), the 8 Plus (top) vs X (bottom) don't seem
that different.
Sarah Tew/CNET
iPhone X vs. iPhone 8 Plus: Flashy vs. functional
Know this: you really can't go wrong with either pick. Unlike previous years
where Apple had one clear top-end iPhone, these two split the difference
between future-forward design and comfortable, traditional feel. The
hardware is in many ways identical, from processor to wireless charging to
similar (but slightly different) dual rear cameras. But there are some
differences that may help make up your mind.
Go with the 8 Plus for an edge on battery life, a familiar home button and
interface, a display that's a bit larger for some needs and a lower price.
Pick the iPhone X is you're looking for a more compact big-screen phone with
a great new design, want to ride the bleeding edge of where Apple's tech is
heading next (mainly the front-facing, 3D depth-sensing Face ID camera), and
don't mind learning a new gesture language (you'll pick it up).

The iPhone X has the looks.
Sarah Tew/CNET
iPhone X: Your top-of-the-line sports car breaks boundaries, but has some
drawbacks
Advantages:
• Size: It's the Goldilocks iPhone. The tall, narrow 5.8-inch screen
is a perfect middle between the hand-friendly iPhone 8 and larger 8 Plus.
• Screen: The OLED display pops, and so far it's been one of the best
phone displays CNET has ever seen.
• Rear cameras: The X cameras have all the bells and whistles -- 2x
optical zoom, optical image stabilization on both lenses -- offering the
most complete iPhone camera package to date.
• Front camera: Front-facing TrueDepth camera can take Portrait
photos, do unique AR tricks and 3D mapping for clever tricks like animojis
and the next version of Snapchat. That can feel gimmicky, but it's also
weirdly fun.
• Face ID: Touch ID is gone from the iPhone X, but the Face ID feature
generally works well.
Drawbacks:
• Price: It's $999 (£999 or AU$1,579) to start, and really $1,149
(£1,149 or AU$1,829) for the model with the storage I'd prefer. Actually,
I'd prefer 128GB of storage, but Apple is only offering 64GB and 256GB
models, and as always, there's no expandable storage.
• App optimization: Not all apps perfectly fit the new display and its
unusual shape and aspect ratio yet, so it means the X's screen size may not
always seem that large.
• Battery life: Longevity is a step down from the iPhone 8 Plus: I
found it got me through a day, but narrowly. And recharging with the
included charger is slow.
• Interface changes: Yes, Face ID works. But with no home button, the
interface is different, and that takes getting used to. In fact, it might
even annoy you -- Control Center's new "swipe down" gesture is a step down
in usability from other iPhones.
• Durability: Our iPhone X drop test shows the nearly all-glass design
may be more fragile than the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. And, unless you're
enrolled in protection like AppleCare, fixing it will be expensive.
CNET Review
Apple iPhone X
A radical redesign that's nearly all screen includes a new cutting-edge
facial recognition feature. But with no more Touch ID or home button, the
iPhone X dares you to change your ways. SEE IT

The iPhone 8 Plus: Boring but good, and it works great.
Sarah Tew/CNET
iPhone 8 Plus: Your workhorse pick doesn't rock the boat
Advantages:
• Battery life: A longer battery life compared to the iPhone X.
• Rear cameras: You're getting most (though not all) of the iPhone X's
camera strengths, including Portrait Mode for photos and 2x optical zoom.
• Traditional 16x9 screen: While the 5.5-inch screen is technically a
bit smaller than that of the 5.8-inch iPhone X, it has the more familiar
16x9 aspect ratio of your HDTV -- the size that's already best optimized for
most videos, apps and games.
• Some iPad-like app features: The 8 Plus includes landscape mode and
in-app split-screen for some apps (Mail, Notes and others) that aren't
available on the narrower screen on the X.
Drawbacks:
• OIS only on one rear camera: The 8 Plus lacks optical image
stabilization on one of its two rear cameras. In the real world, that means
the X has the advantage on

Subject: direct TV now updated

Okay, so I have tried this app on appleTV, iPad mini, and iPhone. I would
have to say the iPhone was the best experience. Mainly because everything
is grouped together, and easy to get too. 1st off, you must change some
settings. turn auto play off, next episode automatically starting off,
and mute sound when app starts should be off. Once you do this, there are
some tabs at the bottom. Home, shows, movies, and networks. It works
great, you go into movies, and it lists all movies from your available
channels, gives you the year the movie was released, and a description of
it. You can even back out and go by TV show, or network. And the best
part about it is, if you set your favorites on 1 device, they carry over
to any device you sign into. I didn’t like the experience on iPad mini to
much, the split screen just confused me, but I don’t use the iPad mini
every day, and someone who does may understand the layout better. I have
already posted about appleTV experience, so won’t repeat it here. All in
all, the experience is fine if you have a little patients. I am not
disappointed. SlingTV has some thinking to do, because both there
packages together, is 45 bucks, and only 67 channels, with no HBO or Cina
max. Plus there feed is choppy at best. I watched direct TV now on 2
devices at the same time, and it never buffered. Watched a NBA game on
ESPN, and a movie on lifetime at the same time for almost 2 hours. HTH.

2017-11-17 Thread E.T.

I did some cleanup in Home Videos this week. All went well.

Later, I discovered some content in TV Shows and Movies was not in
my library. I was able to redownload it all. Has anyone seen this
happen? I did no work in those two areas so am curious what could have
caused this so it will not occur again..

Re: it's here, the X

2017-11-17 Thread Alex Hall
One other question for any X users. I've read that the screen samples touches
faster than any other iOS device. Does this translate to smoother VO
experiences? That is, do swipes or other gestures register faster, making VO
feel snappier overall compared to a 7 or 8? Or is the difference not really
noticeable?

Adobe flash is not accessible on the mac, and it's unlikely that this
will be improved since Flash is a dying breed. Best thing to do is
contact the web site and ask them to switch to HTML 5 and move away

Re: Your Apple ID is being used...

2017-11-17 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

The location stuff all has to do with the ISP and how it routes your traffic.
Our work ISP routes its traffic through a connection in Calgary, which is over
700 km drive south of us. So, the IP that we are given for outbound traffic is
registered in Calgary, not Fort McMurray and that's what Apple is going on when
this message is sent to you. To the original question, I'll look into it some,
but don't have time right now to see if it is configurable. i doubt it, but
will check.

Apple delays HomePod to 2018
Apple's smart speaker isn't making it this year after all.
November 17, 2017 8:40 AM PST

HomePod is now a 2018 product.
James Martin/CNET

Expected to launch in December, Apple's HomePod is being pushed back to 2018,
the company announced Friday.
"We can't wait for people to experience HomePod, Apple's breakthrough wireless
speaker for the home, but we need a little more time before it's ready for our
customers," an Apple spokesperson said. "We'll start shipping in the US, UK and
Australia in early 2018."
The HomePod is Apple's entry into the smart speaker market: a $349 or £349
device that promises standout audio and some smart Siri-enabled tools. The
HomePod was demoed to CNET earlier this year, but only as an audio device.
Its smart functions have largely been under wraps. Meanwhile, many well-priced
smart speakers with Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant and even Microsoft's
Cortana have taken over the market this year.
The HomePod hooks into Siri for its smart functions, and will work with Apple's
smart home platform HomeKit and Apple Music. But it's unclear how many other
apps will work with it.

RE: Your Apple ID is being used...

2017-11-17 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi ET,

It may be in our case as we're a bloody small place.

But still Mt Cook and wellington aren't close so I don't see how they mix this
message.

Mind you it's only slightly beter than my phone was noted as being used in
Auckland which is at the other end of the country

But is where our service providers base of operations are.

pam_tid.so …you can now use your fingerprint to sudo!

Well, Kliphton like me you use to have a windows mobile and that had no home

Hope to get my 10 next week.

I haven’t noticed that when it’s charging but yes when it’s not charging.

I’ll have a look at that next time I have it on charge.

I have noticed that I don’t get anywhere near the same battery life as I did

I look forward to your next one, especially your Face ID experience.

Yes, the phone is surprisingly slim when compared to iPhone 8 Plus.

Hi Mark,

Well I have to admit that I didn't get it until 5:30pm lastnight so when I got
to the setting up face id section I skipped it as the light was getting low and
it seemed I couldn’t' look directly at the screen.

So I'll leave that until the weekend and set it up then.

Interesting the using the device without a home button but it's not that
difficult once you get use to the slide up the screen.

What I really have noticed is its speed and simple quickness when performing a
task on screen.

And I am very surprised by the size,
I thought it would be larger than it is.

After using a 7+ I'm inclined to think it's even sdmaller than the 7 or 8, yet
I believe it's slightly larger.

Still a lot of working things out before I really get use to it.

More to report as things move forward.

Hello Simon.

Your post made me smile.

Congratulations on your iPhone 10. I’m not certain but, so far, I believe you
and Cliff are the only two who have received the unit. I know several other
people on the list are expecting theirs, any day now.

I have no doubt but that you will continue to love the device.

What do you think of Face ID, so far?

Also, please keep us informed on your Apple Pay experiences with Face ID, okay?

And quite frankly it’s like being on a first date,

I’m kind of concerned about touching it in case I do something wrong,

I will say that setting up the device out of the box and using iCloud backups

The device is very quick, and although smaller physically it’s stil got great
screen realestate to work with,

So I’d say so far it’s been worth the wait but still more playing around to
come over the next couple of days

At least the iPhone x doesn’t slap me if I put my hand in the wrong place.

Um,

I've got the x and I don't by choice use face id,

Therrfore I'm not being forced to use it.

As for choices,

Apple do give you choices.

iPhone 6 upwards give you a number of choices

all have both pin codes and touch ID only the x has pin and face id,

 so I can't see issues
in what you guys are say.

Well they shouldn't force you to use face ID, lucky for us. We still have the
option to buy the 8 and 8plus if we need a device from this year. Personally
for me the last IPhone I will own will be the last I am able to get touch ID.

Mark

Hi List,

So today I received notification from my mobile provider that my iPhone X had
arrived,

And quite frankly it’s like being on a first date,

I’m kind of concerned about touching it in case I do something wrong,

I will say that setting up the device out of the box and using iCloud backups
doesn’t work when your back ups are on IOS Public beta versions, and the new
device was IOS 11 production release…

A bit of playing allowed me to reset the device back to the factory start point
and run through without an issue

So far after playing around for an hour or so, I’m actually really impressed
with what they have done,

Once you get passed the fact there is no home button it’s actually easy to work
with the slide finger up to get the app switcher and home screens.

The device is very quick, and although smaller physically it’s stil got great
screen realestate to work with,

So I’d say so far it’s been worth the wait but still more playing around to
come over the next couple of days

At least the iPhone x doesn’t slap me if I put my hand in the wrong place.

Hi,

It depends on how often the dynamic is applied. If they change your IP often,
then your going to need to come up with a plan to either keep changing your IP
in the VPN reference, or subscribe to a host service that can account for the
constant changes. My dynamic IP doesn't change often at all, so I just change
the reference when needed. Regarding the firewall, it's real easy within
Airport Utility to add the VPN port references in the Network tab under Port
Settings. You may run into a barrier though if the cable modem has any
firewall or such security on it.

I ET,

Yes it's kind of crazy that everytime you do something this alert comes up.

What's funny for us in NZ though is that the alert states that my device was
used in a location approx. 400KM northwest in the middle of our mountain range,
Near Mt Cook which is our highest peak, in a place called wellington which is
our capital and is north of me by approx. 1000 Km so neither are close each
other.

Re: Change voiceover key commands

2017-11-17 Thread Jonathan Cohn
So to expand on that statement, you could assign the quicknav key "S" or
the "keyboard commander "option s" to "read current line". I generally
expand the numpad commander functions personally. So perhaps
control-numpad-8 might work for this. .

Apple delays HomePod to 2018 - CNET

2017-11-17 Thread M. Taylor
Apple delays HomePod to 2018
Apple's smart speaker isn't making it this year after all.
November 17, 2017 8:40 AM PST

HomePod is now a 2018 product.
James Martin/CNET

Expected to launch in December, Apple's HomePod is being pushed back to
2018, the company announced Friday.
"We can't wait for people to experience HomePod, Apple's breakthrough
wireless speaker for the home, but we need a little more time before it's
ready for our customers," an Apple spokesperson said. "We'll start shipping
in the US, UK and Australia in early 2018."
The HomePod is Apple's entry into the smart speaker market: a $349 or £349
device that promises standout audio and some smart Siri-enabled tools. The
HomePod was demoed to CNET earlier this year, but only as an audio device.
Its smart functions have largely been under wraps. Meanwhile, many
well-priced smart speakers with Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant and even
Microsoft's Cortana have taken over the market this year.
The HomePod hooks into Siri for its smart functions, and will work with
Apple's smart home platform HomeKit and Apple Music. But it's unclear how
many other apps will work with it.

they have an app on the Fire TV. Maybe I should look there and see if that’s

2017-11-17 Thread dan d.

Is it possible to remap the vo key commands.

For example, to change vo+l to some other combination.

Thanks.

Anyone using the Feelin' /Hallmark app on their Apple TV?

2017-11-17 Thread Donna Goodin
Well, it's that time of year again, when my mind turns to Hallmark. lol

Is anyone using this app? They've increased the subscription price, and I'm
trying to decide whether to pay the higher price. It looks like the app has
become very inaccessible - I seem completely unable to see titles and select a
program. Is anyone else seeing this? I'm willing to pay if the app is still
accessible, but if not, then obviously I won't.
Cheers,
Donna
