RE: iPhone X and face ID

2017-11-19 Thread Simon Fogarty
That’sinteresting,

I’ll have to give it another go.

I still have my own eyes, but still I haven’t been able to get the attention
feature to pick up my eyes looking at the screen.

the attention setting being on doesn’t slow me down and it always unlocks the
phone, this is huge for me because both my eyes are prostetics, what I found is
if you move your eyes either difrection, the phone will know you are paying
attention. Since it works for me, and is a higher security measure, then I
leave it on.

Hi Tim,

Yeah I’m finding it very easy

I did a small experiment lastnight with it

I turned on the attention neded setting and tried again to use the face id.

No matter what I did I could not unlock the phone using face id.

Turning attention needed off again and even with the lights off it unlocked my
phone

So a warning of types to the Blind and VI community with the iPhone x
I personally find face id great but better with the attention needed feature
turned off.

Hi,

Thanks for this Simon. I kept hearing all sorts of people lamenting that the
Face ID would be more cumbersome than the Touch ID. It's good to hear from a
blind user as to its ease of use and setup. I realize that you're just one
opinion out of many, but good to hear actual use-case experiences instead of
speculation.

FYI an addition to the iPhone X

I setup the face id today and I started by turning off the attention settings

I don’t know about anyone else but a totally blind person looking at a specific
point on a small screen seems to me to be harder than it sounds.

And I’m not normally worried about these things,
But after a couple hours trying it was a waste of time and effort.

So turning off the attention settings which is located under settings, general
and accessibility

I went to face id / pin code

The face ID set up is in kiwi talk,
Bloody easy

The phone does 2 scans of the face to get the image of the face,

The phone tells you what it requires you to do or should I say VO tells you.

Then after a couple of minutes of the face scanning

I was able to lock my phone and then unlock it in seconds with the face id.

I’m inclined to say that face id is quicker by far when unlocking your phone
than touch id is / was.

The face id setup is very simple and as I said easy to do.

The instructions are clear from the phone and take in total less than 5 minutes
in total to carry out.

I did try it tonight in darkness but that so far hasn’t gone well,
I ended up using my pin code as the face id didn’t unlock the device in the
early darkness,

Thus far I have to admit I’m really impressed by the X
It’s quick and responsive to touch.
The face id is quick and easier to do than the pin code and unlike the pin code
with vo running can’t be heard by the people around you.

I’ve just changed my pin code for the first time in 3 years as folks I work
with have been hearing my pin code over the passed couple of days.
Now they wont because of the face id.

See my later message. Basically, just click Details, and when the App store

 Hi all,

So every time I open my Mac, I now get a message that says "Upgrade to
High Sierra Now." I do plan to upgrade, but I want to do it when I have
time, and I don't want to see that stupid notification every time I open
my Mac. Is there some way to make it go bye-bye?

Re: Free data recovery software for damaged memory card?

2017-11-19 Thread Alex Hall
Thanks for the link. I think I found part of the problem: this card has no s.
Most disks are named disk0s2, or disk1s3. This, though, is under disk3, but has
only a 0 in front of it. I've tried variations on mounting "disk3 0", disk30,
disk3s0 (despite the missing s in the list) and so on, to no avail. Does this
explain anything more?

Thanks, but I'm really not willing to pay. The only things on this card
are a bunch of photos, but they're not critical. I hoped for a way to

Re: Question About Shortcuts While Interacting with Apple Music

2017-11-19 Thread Jonathan Cohn
The apple script commands below appear to do what you want.
tell application "iTunes" to set loved of current track to true

or

tell application "iTunes" to download the current track
Now let me see if I actually loved that Bruce Springsteen song. Yes, Loved is
now checked. There is a separate dislike and also a rating from 1 to 100. I am
not sure if the latter is able to be manually set. There are also separate
properties for album loved and album dislike .

You should be able to put either or both of these two lines into an
AppleScript file and then assign a commander to it. I am not quite sure what
would happen if iTunes is not playing a track, you might get a nasty little
error.

If you do, then wrapping the above in a AppleScript try .. on error .. end try
would eliminate the error.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: How to turn off Cursor Tracking on Macs with the touch Bar?

2017-11-19 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Janet,

Thanks. I was hoping there was a way to do it that didn't involve a
four-finger key press, but I guess no such luck. Thanks for answering my
question.
Cheers,

Re: How to turn off Cursor Tracking on Macs with the touch Bar?

2017-11-19 Thread Janet Ingber
Hi Donna,

There are two ways to do it. If you hold the function key down and then press
any number on the numbers row of the keyboard, that number will be the
corresponding Function key. Therefore the command is FN-Shift-VO-3. The
other way is to do the same configuration and double tap the F3 on the Touch
Bar while holding down the keyboard keys. There will be an F3 option on the
Touch Bar since the function key is being used in the command.

Let me know if I’m not making sense.

Re: Free data recovery software for damaged memory card?

2017-11-19 Thread Alex Hall
I've ne er used that command, but a quick look suggests the source needs to be
visible to the OS. Unless it's somewhere I don't know how to find, the Mac
isn't seeing the card at all. Do you happen to know where unmounted, but still
connected, volumes might live? Not in /Volumes, obviously, but I don't know
enough about working with drives to know here else to look.

Mark,

Thanks! This was just the information I was looking for. So any responsiveness
improvements mentioned in the 10/X iPhone are also present in the 8 based on
your non-scientific testing. At least I know that if I upgrade this year I
should not suffer any performance issues by using the non-top of the line
model. Considering that I keep my phones for three to four years, I am willing
to pay more if it means saving 1/10 of a second for each operation.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: Upgrade to High Sierra.

2017-11-19 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Jonathan,

This is the first OS not to have a French voice during installation since
voices in other languages began to be provided. That may have been as far back
as Lion. That’s why I say that High Sierra is a disgrace. Localisation has been
deteriorating and I’ve reported many of the problems to Apple to no avail. In
Sierra, the word Folder has not been localised although it used to be. In other
situations, the wrong word or expression has been used.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: iPhone X and face ID

2017-11-19 Thread Kliphton Miller
the attention setting being on doesn’t slow me down and it always unlocks the
phone, this is huge for me because both my eyes are prostetics, what I found is
if you move your eyes either difrection, the phone will know you are paying
attention. Since it works for me, and is a higher security measure, then I
leave it on.

Re: Reading EPUB books on the Mac

2017-11-19 Thread sandi sørensen
Hi, i have not used the Mac much of late for Ebooks.
On the Mac i have done different things, scanned them with a book scanner , and
read them , made pubs into rtf documents and read them too, it depends on the
format you are using i guess.

Hello Simon,

As I posted in a separate thread, I guess it's a matter of opinion.

I rather like the new ring tone. So much so that I have set it as my default
on my iPhone 8 Plus. Once I get tired of it, I'll demote it to something used
less frequently, say, new voicemail notifications. (smile)

Oh, by the way, I found it a little too low volume, as well. So I imported it
into my sound editor, increased its volume, and saved both versions to my phone.

Mark

I've just had a look at this ring tone on my phone and Quite frankly it's not
that impressive.

I could barely hear it
And I wont change from my nokia ring tone as the default to this for anything.

How To Download iPhone X Exclusive Reflection Ringtone And Then Set As Default
On Any iPhone By Paul Morris | November 2nd, 2017

Here's how you can download the official iPhone X exclusive Reflection ringtone
and then set it as default on an iPhone.

It was recently discovered that Apple's brand new flagship ships with a new
default ringtone called Reflection which is exclusive to that particular
device. As always, the Internet wasn't having that and it's now available to
obtain and load onto other iOS devices.

Apple does a fairly wonderful job of making changes in each version of iOS and
ensuring that new devices offer something new and unique to users. That doesn't
always mean sweeping wholesale changes which reinvent devices or platforms, but
it does mean that device owners will have something to sink their teeth into.
Apple's brand new gorgeous flagship device, iPhone X, comes with enough changes
and improvements to almost justify its astronomical selling price, but people
are actually excited that one of those changes is the introduction of a brand
new and fresh ringtone for the modern era.

Some people may feel that they need to drop the $999+ in order to get access to
this ringtone but that simply isn't true. As this is simply a file included in
the iOS 11 firmware that is specific to iPhone X, it's simply a case of someone
jumping into that IPSW and pulling out the file to share it with everyone,
which is exactly what has happened here.

If you are loving everything about the brand new iPhone X Reflection ringtone
but aren't planning on purchasing the device, either through lack of funds or
lack of interest, then you can actually download the Reflection ringtone from
here:
https://mega.nz/#!QSRjCKrY!irnC_GZpJCVaaEh_OR2icPyWy7lOcKun-c24J6VooBU

With the ringtone downloaded, you need to get it onto your iPhone and then set
it as default ringtone. Thankfully, we have you covered, with our previous
guide on how to do that here: Create Free Ringtones On iPhone From Songs In
Music Library Without Jailbreak, Here's How.

That should be all that you need to get yourself, and your device, into a
position of blasting out the new Reflection ringtone whenever your phone rings.
Now go forth and pretend that you are an iPhone X owner.

Hey guys. I clicked on the link in the article to download that reflection
ringtone and everything in there was a clickable item. When I click on
download, nothing happens. Has anyone been successful on downloading this
ringtone and if so, can you share it? Thanks.
